A cozy medium size restaurant located within the Richmond fine arts museum on the third floor. Been there few times now and I usually left with satisfaction from their customer service and quality of food. The establishment is geared more towards fine dining so I advise to wear more than a T shirt and jeans when dining here. It has a beautiful over look scenery of the court yard where all the statues and decorations of the museum are. During the dinner hours, the place is dimly lite to give off a cozy atmosphere. The food tasted pretty good and decorated very well. They have a small menu choice, but each dish is very unique. Unfortunately I went here recently during the Terra-cotta exhibit where they had Asian fusion dishes and I was not a fan at all. My wife ordered the noodle soup and it was very unappealing in taste and look. Sadly she preferred a cup ramen home cooked over that. I really wanted to bring her here to enjoy some of the dishes I've had that Amuse offered in the past because I truly enjoyed it, but we just got unlucky and got stuck with their unique menu choice. I think Amuse should stay away from the Asian cuisine and go back to their original menu. Great restaurant overall though, I definitely recommend people trying this place out for dinner especially. I advise to RSVP ahead of time. read more

I've dined here twice and both times were enjoyable. The view at the restaurant is awesome. To start I ordered the Mussels and I really enjoyed that dish and highly recommend it. For my main I decided to order the Hanger Steak "Moussaka" and it was awesome and I highly recommend it. I did change out the roasted eggplant for the potatoes. For dessert I ordered the Butterscotch Blondie (I think that's the name) I liked it but it wasn't anything too special if they have the Blueberry Pound Cake on the menu I would highly recommend ordering that. read more

We had a very upsetting and poor dinner at Amuse Friday evening. We were celebrating my daughter graduation from VCU. We had a party of 5 and the waiter was.... insulting, poor, slow and a smart Alec. My dinner arrived and instead of halibut and polenta with kale - I had some turine type jello substance which tasted terrible. This wasn't polenta as advertised. I asked the waiter - when I finally got his attention -what it was and that it tased bad and wasn't polenta. he snatched the dish from me and refused to return it. I asked for a different side. He refused to even discuss it with me 10 minutes later her returned said " the Chef is gonna hook you up" and left. When the entire party's has finished dinner the waiter returns with over cooked halibut probably kept hot for 25 minutes with potatoes and green beans. No sauce. No flavor. Overcooked fish with bland vegetables. And he slung the dish down and left. I care more about my daughter than a meal so I did not say a word. I paid out $200+ bill and left. But I won't go back. Service and food was slow, Rude and terrible read more

I took my mom and her friend here for a celebratory lunch this weekend. We have both been in the past but we were drawn to Amuse on Saturday because of the beautiful weather. The location is definitely the selling point--a table next to the window gives you a lovely view of the VMFA grounds. Another thing this place has going for it? It's really quiet. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I appreciate being able to talk to the person I'm with. The servers are also very friendly and accommodating. Now for the food! The menu is inspired by the rotating exhibit in the museum, which in this case was the Terracotta Army from China. A lot of dishes on the menu were Chinese or Chinese-influenced flavors, but they also offered some things like hamburgers. I started with a sparkling cocktail made of Cava and pomegranate juice, which was tasty. For food, my mom and her friend both ordered a salmon dish with bok choy. I ordered the ma po tofu. I was expecting a very saucy dish, but when it came out I realized it was somewhat "deconstructed." The sauce was really good, as were most of the mushrooms, but some of them were way too salty, like they had been marinating in the sauce for too long. The tofu was a little dry and didn't absorb much of the sauce. My mom really enjoyed her salmon dish. Overall I think the big draw here is location, and it's a safe choice for taking out your parents who don't like loud places. I'm sure I'll be back, because I want to see how they change the menu for the next exhibit! read more

The food at Amuse is simply divine. The waitstaff member that handle our table was awesome! She was tipped well! Thank you for your professional service! The overall atmosphere at Amuse is nice, comfortable. This was our 3rd time dining at Amuse. We had a great time celebrating our Mother's birthday, except for the two girls posted up at the concierge desk that were gawking at the table of African American women the whole time. It's the calling security on our Mother's Birthday Balloons, telling her she had to "leave them at the concierge desk for security to walk them down himself, from fear that they would set off the sprinkler system. And that we could wait for them (our Mother's birthday balloons) downstairs" and then security returning the flower and candy attached to them damaged and dismantled that gets Amuse the one star. We frequent VMFA often. We won't come again to Amuse, though. And we will tell everyone we know how we were treated today. It's 2023, Do Better and Hire Better! read more

Best food eaten in Richmond during our 3-night stay straddling Thanksgiving Day 2017. And that review is made through a NYC lens! Much effort is made to make drinks vegan & healthful. Floor-to-ceiling windows look onto near-bucolic museum grounds. Museum is a must see in Richmond and Amuse a must eat. [end] read more

I agree with Rich G in that the best part about Amuse is that it's in the VMFA and there's an amazing balcony that overlooks the lawn. As for everything else? I don't get it. My mom and I were having a girls day and we love going to the museum. She had been to Amuse before, but I hadn't so it was high time I sat in the lap of luxurious dining. We started off with a mimosa which was refreshing-- no complaints there. Then I ordered a salmon dish without realizing that it was cured (aka not cooked with heat). I was totally embarrassed that I didn't realize what "cured" meant and they didn't make it a big deal at all. They just got me a new entree (crab cakes) and that was the end of that. The crab cakes were unfortunately not that great. If I didn't have other stellar, Earth shattering crab cakes of Richmond to compare it to, then I'm sure I would have liked them a bit more. Overall, the appeal for me was absolutely the location. I can't wait to sit on that balcony this spring with my laptop and a glass of wine. read more

A very good restaurant but not great (to be clear, I will go back). We are incredibly lucky to have a world class museum that also has a good restaurant. The view is outstanding with glass walls that overlook trees and sculpture garden and reflecting pool. The vibe is elegant artsy cool with a range of people - ages, racially, traditionally dressed, fashionable, and casual. A small bar and lounge area with people having drinks. The food was very good. A limited menu as to be expected since it is not a huge place with an emphasis on fish and beef. My entree of crabcakes was very good - not too bready but enough to keep the cake together but a little bland. My issue is with the side - rice and starches. I would have enjoyed something lighter so I could have justified a dessert. The service was friendly, relaxed, and welcoming. Reasonably priced. A few pointers - make reservations especially if there is a special exhibit. read more

Really fantastic food, lovely atmosphere - the only thing that really put me off was the unsettling conversation between the woman behind the bar and one of the waitstaff... When I tried to get her attention to order a second drink, I got no more than a glance before she went back to laughing with her coworker. For a moment I wondered if I was in fact sitting in a fine dining restaurant or if I was back in high school. It was very unprofessional to say the least. read more

I was asked to wear my mask until a server came. To try to use my mask every-time my server came by my table. I sat with my 8 month old son waiting for my guest whom I invited. I felt anxiety every time I took my mask off to sip water. Scared I would be reprimanded because my waitress had not come by yet. Then through the meal I was nervous every time the waitress came to check on us. I understand we are suppose to wear mask. People have equated it to wearing a seatbelt. Yet I argue that wearing a seatbelt had never caused anxiety and fear. It hasn't caused depression and isolation. Going out to eat is one pleasure that hasn't been taken so I thought. I wouldn't recommend coming to this restaurant. Save your money and be at ease in your own home. read more

Great restaurant inside the VMFA. I went with a group of 6 and we were seated quickly for brunch without a reservation at about 1pm on a Sunday. The atmosphere was great! I ordered the mussels & shared a plate of french fries. The rest of the group had the lentils soup. I thought everything was good, especially for inside a museum. This is definitely a restaurant not just a museum cafe. With that being said, I didn't think that any dish was super outstanding. I found my mussel broth to be very salty, with the seafood I didn't think I needed extra salt. The fries were just normal. I think this is a great spot to eat if you're hungry but hoping to stay at the museum for a while longer. read more

This is a BEAUTIFUL restaurant! The food is as much a work of art. We were here yesterday (Sunday) for a late brunch with my two best friends. We decided to sit on the upper deck patio outside. It was a gorgeous afternoon, it was just SO windy! We were seated promptly, and our waiter was by quickly to take our drink order. They had some really neat drink choices, my friend got some kind of blackberry lemonade soda that looked really good! My other friend got an overpriced caraffe of wine... $27 for a caraffe that pours less than 2 glasses of wine! Honestly, if you're there and want some wine, skip the caraffe and just fork out the extra couple bucks for a bottle. It's not worth it otherwise. I was a little apprehensive when my friends suggested coming here, because I am on a sort of elimination diet to address some possible food allergies, so there's not a lot I can eat right now. I looked up their menu online and basically everything had gluten, dairy, alcohol, or soy which is a no go for me right now, BUT our waiter was super nice and let me order a plate of greens with two poached eggs and didn't make me feel like a diva for doing so. My one friend got the mussels, and they looked amazing! She said they were really good too--I think they were made in a butter wine sauce. My other friend got a salad, which she said was good, but she didn't finish. Oh, and before we ordered, they brought us a blueberry banana coffee cake/bread that looked AHHMAZING, and it was lightly dusted with powdered sugar...it was so hard not to try a bite, but my friends reported that it was absolutely delicious! I think the best part of the experience was our waiter. I wish I could remember his name but he was just a doll! He was so funny and so nice/helpful that it really made the experience that much better. I think the service is the best part about the restuarant...besides the view of course! My friends were so tempted to order dessert, but we decided we had more art to see! The dessert list sounded very tempting though. We'll definitely be back when I can actually eat real food! read more

Sunday brunch (11:30am-2pm). Ah-may-zing indeed. 'Tis a semi-dressy, modern restaurant with a great view and decor nestled into the 3rd floor + balcony of the VMFA (museum) in the Fan. The food was sublime, with a mixture of wondrous tastes and perfect presentation, all at a reasonable price. It wasn't too busy, but if you have a larger group, I'd make a reservation just in case. First off, parking: Free for members and $5 for the general public in the parking deck. You might be able to find some free street parking nearby. Next, service: The waitresses were attentive and helpful. Our waters & coffees were consistently refilled, asked how the food was, and our checks individually split across the four of us. And, drumroll for the main attraction...FOOD recs: 1. Starter: fresh raspberry bread topped with powdered sugar ($0). Very, very good. A *free* treat prior to starting your meal. 2. Starter: Homemade grilled scallion biscuits ($7). 2 deliciously crumbly-soft biscuits with scallions overlaid with a lightly-spiced peach chutney. Sublime. Shared across the four of us. 3. Mains: Local mushroom ragout ($14). A triangle crunchy-outside grits cake with a mixture of (sauteed?) mushrooms over a black garlic puree that tasted fig-y. 4. Mains: Grilled lamb & poached eggs ($13). Two poached eggs + a pile of soft, non-gamey lamb in a perfect tomato sauce. This was overlain with 4 fried eggplant strips and little arugula. 5. Drinks: plenty of options, however, coffee ($2): yums. My go-to wake-up drink. Free coffee refills. Afterwards, walk off the food coma while viewing the free exhibits and/or strolling through the small but pretty grounds outside the museum. Overall cost for a main dish + 1/4 of the starter + 1 coffee: ~$20. A super worth-it experience. Note: if you have a VMFA membership, you get 10% off. Not sure if this is a permanent discount. read more

So torn about this review. Two or three stars? It was okay, but considering the prices should I (we/you) be able to expect more than okay? But there are pluses that pull it out of two star range, I suppose. Here we go... Got the Living Social deal and was so excited. Great reviews from friends, family and the critics. We had a beautiful afternoon into evening and were able to sit outside. They provide retro sunglasses in variety of colors for diners sitting outside to block the sun. These were much appreciated. The view from the balcony is really what pulls up this review to three stars. How can you not love the people watching? The spectacular sunset? The soothing water feature and the sculpture garden? Loved it. Our cocktails were great and reasonably priced. The tuna tartare starter was fresh and light although a little bland. Followed up with the chilled cantalope gazpacho and a butternut squash bisque. Delicious. For dinner hubby got the special - seafood ettoufee - tasted like it was made with Campbells soup. Seriously, Zatarains would have had more flavor, it was completely bland. My crabcakes were a little better, but not much. I could plainly see that the table next to us also ordered crab cakes they clearly had a sauce on their plates that was completely missing on mine. What's up with that? I think we got some kind of flan for dessert but I can't even remember exactly so I'm going to say whatever it was didn't blow my socks off. Even with the LS deal we paid over $150. I would go back for drinks but for the money there at least twenty restaurants I would go to before going back to Amuse. read more

Amazingly disappointed. I paid $14 for a handful of garbanzo beans w/4 cubes each of sweet potato and turnip in the juice from a can of tomatoes which in all probably cost 3$ to make. It did not come w/rice or quinoa. I asked the host if we could sit by the window and he placed us in the table farthest in the back. The service was ok, the coffee, side of biscuits were good and the quiche was underwhelming and overall disappointing for the $50. Be very careful about what you chose as it very much depends on the item. I hate feeling taken advantage of read more

When you choose Amuse, keep in mind that you are mainly paying for ambiance. The champagne cocktails can't be beat and the appetizers really hit the spot. The menu changes every 2-3 months, but this keeps it seasonal and new each time you visit. Really like that cocktails are usually coordinated with whichever exhibit is being featured - cute! This is a great option if you have a long-ish wait until entering an exhibit. Sit outside, if it's nice; the view cannot be beat! read more

I don't live anywhere near Richmond's museum district, but whenever I visit the VMFA or am otherwise in the neighborhood, I try to eat at Amuse. On Saturday, April 28, I enjoyed a sunny if windy lunch on the outside terrace, watching the dog walkers and the visitors experiencing the wondrous secrets of the white Chloe sculpture. Although I did not particularly care for the vegetarian entree I selected with Moroccan spices - the chickpeas were really chewy and the cooked green onions stringy and impossible to cut - I've overall had very good meals here. The service is professional, the menu interesting, the atmosphere unique. It's worth a try. Reservations recommended - it can get busy. read more

Amuse Restaurant - Lovely view from the terrace at Amuse - New American Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

I've been coming to VMFA since I was a kid, but never thought to dine as their eating establishments. Well today I took a leap of faith during my visit to VMFA and went to Amuse Restaurant. How was my experience? Here is the review: The Good: Ambiance- It would be a safe assumption that Amuse prides itself in being an upscale restaurant. Servers pour fresh spring water out of a glass bottle and some of the menu items with apostrophes that were hard to pronounce made me realize that this was not going to be a typical visit to some place common like Applebees. The decor of the dining area was very modern and noise level was kept at a minimum. Taste- After placing my order, the server brought some fresh bread for the table. The bread seemed to be a sort of Rosemary bread and when butter is applied on it, the taste is something that can easily rival Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay Biscuits or O'Charleys rolls. I ordered the Fried Chicken and Grits as my entree. The grits had just enough seasoning and butter to avoid the bland type of grits that a 3rd grader could make and the chicken was lightly breaded but evenly seasoned. The Bad: Service- The server was nice and took our orders, but there were times where he would disappear for large periods of time. I would say during the entire dining experience, he visited the table maybe 3-4 times. As noted above, the bread was very good, but he only gave one piece and took my bread place before I could ask for another. I have certainly experienced better service from other restaurants. Portion Size- With the Fried Chicken and Grits, you get a plate of grits with what seemed to be 1 or 1.5 chicken thighs. While the food was good, I still was somewhat hungry afterwards. Overall- I dont think that the service that I experienced was a reflection on the restaurant as a whole. I casually observed other servers be more active with their tables. But the food is good, ambiance is great and most importantly, I could eat at the museum instead of searching for street parking at a nearby restaurant. FOUR STARS. read more

We ate lunch at Amuse on Saturday. We'd both read a lot of great reviews about this restaurant and we'd tried to eat there several times before, but it was always too crowded. Needless to say we were excited for our dining experience. But I'm only giving it three stars, A-OK, which is not what I expected. The restaurant itself is beautiful. I'm not a big minimalist fan but it works here, especially with the gorgeous windows over looking the grounds. I'd love to dine out on the patio one day when the weather is nice. After we were seated I grabbed my napkin and before my husband could finish saying, "Wait, the napkin is full of lint!" my dark strapless denim dress was covered in white fluff. I looked as if I'd just walked in from an artic blizzard. I did my best to brush the lint off. A second "minor" issue was our table. Despite being positioned right in front of the lovely window, and despite the chic black marble top, the table wobbled. You know, the kind of table that makes you want to stuff your linty napkin under the base to make it be still. We had to be careful about our movements during the meal lest we upset the table--absolutely no elbows. We started with a wine flight and the local cheese and honey plate. The wines were good (a chardonnay viognier, a meritage, a pinot noir) but they were served in small champagne flutes. There were only two cheeses on the cheese plate--they honey was divine. A server finally brought some of their homemade bread around. It was delicious, but they only give you one piece at a time! While it partly seemed like nice, personal service to have each piece of bread delivered to your plate, it also seemed like the bread was a precious commodity that had to be protected. It also made me unusually interested in eating more bread! I ordered the pan-seared scallops with herbed chick pea farro and greek yogurt. I did not love this dish--the scallops were ok, the rest of it was somewhat bland. My husband ordered the special, a pan-seared trout with salad greens. I'm sure the dish had a fancier name than that. His fish was perfectly cooked and the salad was very tasty. He definitely made the right choice. We were supposed to share, but we mostly ate off his plate. Since we had cupcakes waiting at home, we didn't order any dessert. The server brought me a lint roller before we left so I could de-fuzz myself from the napkin event. Thus concludes my unfortunate three-star review. Will we go back to Amuse again? Heck yes! It's gorgeous, we're museum members and we support the VMFA and all of its' food endeavors. The things that made this a three-star review can be easily fixed. It mostly requires attention to detail. We look forward to trying Amuse again for dinner, and I look forward to updating this review with a five-star review. read more

This time around, we went for cocktails and dinner with a party of four. Service was a little spotty, but the food and the view were quite lovely. After a rather roller coaster-like series of lunches at Amuse, I can say that I'll go back. Occasionally. And largely to soak in the bright, meticulously designed space, as the food isn't consistent enough to tempt me into full courtship. It's a prime example of menu that's not executed quite as well as it's written - definitely creative, but the flavors, textures and combinations are often a shade shy of delicious. It's good. And by that, I mean it's not bad. I think they could step it up by eliminating so much 'fusion' (tagines, curries, Asian sauces/sides) which they don't do well, and pouring their hearts into fresh, simple classics like high-quality fish, salads and soups, which they do quite well. read more

Late snack lunch as a fabulous thunderstorm roared past the giant plate windows. Tuna tartare, fried oysters. Tuna over avocado. Tiny arugula leaves? TASTY. Oysters fried just so with a cream sauce. And then spectacular japanese body art. A lovely afternoon. read more

Oh wow this was SOOO GOOD! My family came in town this past weekend to see the Rodin exhibit and I made us lunch reservations at Amuse. Our table of five was promptly seated near the window with a great view. We all started with cocktails. My The Camille was topped with vanilla foam and was super tasty. Fresh bread was delivered during cocktails and it was far and above the most delicious bread I have had in a long time. Almost all of us started with the duck pastrami - you can tell we are all related, can't you? The pieces were small, smokey, and tasty. The cured duck egg was these teeny tiny little egg morsels that I scooped on to of the duck for a super savory bite. Our server sold us on the bouillabaisse and we are so glad we took her advice. The fish of the day was rockfish and it was the fish in the soup. I seriously ate every single drop. It was served with a piece of grilled toast that I left in the soup so it soaked up all of the broth. This being my family, we did have dessert. I had a maple creme caramel and my brother had the chess pie. Both hit out sweet spot. I was so happy to see they had green chartreuse as an aperitif. All in all, this set us up for an excellent day at the museum. read more

I was so excited to come here for my birthday dinner especially after reading such wonderful reviews online. I love the museum and I wanted this place to be amazing. The setting for this restaurant couldn't be better over looking the gardens in a very modern but unpretentious space. Unfortunately that's about where the compliments end. My butternut squash soup was very bland and had a strange foamy texture to it. Others at my table had a pretty good salad and surprisingly delicious oysters. The main course - korean style noodles with short ribs - was decent but nothing to be too excited over. Others at my table tried the fish which was bland and the lamb shank which was good (but how hard is it cook a short rib?). For dessert we tried the saffron cookie with passion fruit sorbet which was the highlight of the meal and an average chocolate cake. Overall I would say i think this place is decent but overpriced for what you get - maybe try lunch if you're dying to go. I should have gone to Millie's or Acacia if I wanted a memorable meal. read more

Not amused! We went here after visiting the Chihuly exhibit. It was restaurant week, so I can only speak to that particular menu. Before I even tasted any food, however, I was turned off for the following reasons: 1) We couldn't grab a drink at the bar unless we were going to have "full service." We were early and wanted to grab a drink before the rest of our party arrived, but we instead went downstairs to Best Cafe (which turned out to be much better). 2) The carpeted floors and office / back patio (?) -like chairs made me feel like I was in a basement of a friend's house, not in an upscale restaurant. The chairs were not comfortable. 3) We had a party of 7 and the table they put us at was better suited for 5. 4) The view from inside, where we were sat, was not that great. The view and vibe of Best Cafe downstairs was much more enjoyable. We ordered drinks and our dinner selections and then were surprised with an amuse bouche. I thought this was clever and a nice touch, but the cucumber slice with a chunk of scallop on top didn't do it for me. It didn't come together well at all and just continued the negative thoughts I had about this place. My first course was a potato and lamb soup, which I assumed would be creamy. It was not creamy, it was broth based, and it was not that tasty. I've had soup on the same level as this straight out of a can. Big disappointment. Others at my table got friend oysters, which were OK. My brother had the salmon tartare, which he apparently liked. My main course was the short ribs. The sauce was a brown sauce that didn't do it for me. The flavor was either off or just not there. The ribs were also dried out, which was again, very disappointing. My wife had the squid, and it was mediocre. My two friends from New Kent had the crabcakes, which they were very fond of, but they are from New Kent. They usually get catfish if they want seafood, so crab cakes were a real treat for them. For dessert I had the Molasses Gingerbread Cake and this was by far the highlight of the evening. This dessert gets 5 stars. The pumpkin ice cream that came with the cake was creamy and full of flavor and I'd go back just to have it again. My recommendation, especially on a Friday night ($2 beers), would be to go have drinks at Best Cafe downstairs, have an inexpensive meal there as well, enjoy the ambiance and atmosphere, then head upstairs for dessert (if they'll serve it to you!) read more

I don't know why I expected a good experience from a restaurant that exists inside of a museum. Maybe because of the ludicrously overpriced menu. The food was not bad by any means, but it certainly did not make me feel like I got my money's worth. In addition, the layout of the dining room feels cramped when busy and the sound levels prevent conversation with anybody who isn't directly next to you. Service was good, if a bit flawed. All in all, not worth the trip. Just an overly expensive and uncomfortable dining experience. read more

Excellent quality, taste, presentation, and service. Had the scallops and celery soup. And ambience and views are great too!

Interesting (and good) menu. Reasonable prices for this type of place. Our service experience started poorly and got better as the night went on (after the first 15 minutes) - slow and bit apathetic to timely and more engaged. Unfortunately, our entrees were served warm at best which for any dish isn't good but especially for the person who had shrimp and grits (shrimp was bland too). I found the atmosphere a bit cold. I give it the 3-star A-OK because I'd like to believe they were just a little off with us that night (a table of 6). read more

Amuse might be Richmond's best fine dining restaurant. The menu is creative, the food quality extremely high, and the service staff is professional and friendly. Brunch is especially pleasant. I can't say anything bad about Amuse but I also proposed here so I am a little biased. This allowed me to have more interaction with the staff and they were wonderful. The restaurant closes at 2:30 for lunch and reopens at 5:30 for dinner even though the cafe has happy hour from 2:30-4:30. Anyway I was running late and the hostess and waiter stayed way past the lunch closing time because I called ahead and told them what was going on. They both were wonderful and I couldn't have asked for a better experience from the staff. The waiter was very knowledgeable and nice and the hostess went out of her way to take pics of us without asking. Anyway I went here for lunch so I can't talk about the full menu but the food was great. We had the caprese salad and experienced some of the best farmers market tasting tomatoes I've had in a long long time. We also tried the deviled eggs which were whipped with cheese. Both amazing. Had sandwiches for lunch and they were great. Lamb and pita pocket was specially good. Will definitely return for dinner. read more
