What takes it to the next level is a very generous amount of St. Louis gooey butter cake that's mixed in. Before having this ice cream I had never heard of St. Louis gooey butter cake, but I'm so glad that I've been introduced. The cake is buttery as it's name suggests and it's dense and sticky. It's so gooey that I feel I have to brush my teeth extra long afterwards, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Love the owners of this place. Love the Social and and was excited to get delicious ice cream made by the people who originated it at their new location in Sunset Park but was deeply disappointed about the portion size. If you are going to charge $6.95 for two scoops, it should be 2 full large scoops. I'm not sure if was due to newer staff not being trained properly or they were instructed to, but both of my scoops barely equaled a very small scoop and a half. It barely filled the cup. The staff is great but the ice cream itself is gross. It tastes like artificial sugar and chemicals. When you look at the ingredients, its no surprise - guar gum, locust bean whatever the hell, and a whole bunch of things which generally should never be in ice cream. It's clear they use many cheap filler ingredients as opposed to using real, high quality ingredients. It's like WAY too sweet but at the same time, lacks any real flavor. I don't enjoy their ice cream. Limoncello blah blah or sorbet blah blah doesn't do it for me. (I could be getting them confused with gelato). We used to love coming to this place and eating crack caramel flavor, but then they did not have it. I noticed that the ice cream selections were missing nuts in the ice cream (hazel nut, coconut, pecan, almonds). I tried pistachio, the only ice cream in stock that had nuts. It was too sugary, no flavor of pistachio. I don't want to try anything else, as during Covid I don't want to experiment trying flavors inside, where I have to take my mask off. We stood in line for 1 hour. Would not recommend. They changed owners and things changed for the worst. A better ice cream can be bought in a store with better flavor. read more

My favorite flavors are sweet as honey, cookies and cream, and chocolate milk and cookies. I would say I like the (sweet) cookies and cream the most just because I personally like things that are very original and taste familiar. Even so, I have tried a lot of their flavors like snap mallow pop, strawberries and cream, salted crack caramel, and it came from gowanus. All of them are delicious, but not something I would kill for. The staff are very kind and let you sample flavors. They are very welcoming and it's quick and easy to order or ask to sample flavors. I got Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace and Coffee Toffee Coffee, which we're both very yummy. I loved the bits of cookie in the oatmeal lace. My mom got Salted Crack'd Caramel, which she liked, and my brother got Summer of Love and The Hook- he liked both but The Hook barely had its mix-ins, so he ended up liking Summer of Love best. When we arrived, there was a line of people inside, but the line was moving quickly. It also gave my friend and I a chance to read the menu of flavors over, as there were so many and they all looked so good! Our server was really patient and was totally fine with us trying 4 flavors each. I tried Ooey gooey, Nonna D's, the commodore, and cracked salted caramel. They all were so good and i had a hard time choosing, and ultimately settled on ooey gooey and cracked salted caramel. My friend got commodore and ooey gooey. Ooey gooey is so good because the block of cake within are so delicious and soft, while one would expect cake to get hard in a cold ice cream. Cracked salted caramel is a very strong flavor and delicious, although it slightly overpowered Ooey gooey for me and I separated the flavors as much as possible. Overall, great service and really unique flavors. Will return to try their other ones!!! They also have a unique selection of cones (like the pretzel cone). What's nice is that if you get a pint you don't have to get a pre-packaged one they'll scoop out a pint for you. I decided to get a pint of the sweet honey but then I got a scoop of the nonnas oatmeal cookie ice cream and let me tell you - I was this close to getting a pint of that too. It tastes exactly like an oatmeal cookie and has pieces of oatmeal cookies in it too. It's SOOOO good. My friend got the mango sherbet ice cream and loved that too. This is my second visit to an Ample Hills. I visited this original location around 5pm on a Wednesday. The shop probably seats around 10 small parties comfortably and was pretty packed when I came. This particular Ample Hills is also very kid friendly. Ample Hills ice cream is not a competitor for me for best NYC ice cream. I want to be clear that the ice cream tastes fine (hence 3 instead of 2 stars). However, for a place that is so raved about, I just expect more. I got a small double scoop of the Dreamsicle and Ooey Gooey Butter Cake in a birthday cake waffle cone ($6.85). The Dreamsicle is comparable to any other orange dreamsicle you've had in your life it you're a fan. The Ooey Gooey Butter Cake tastes like a cream-based ice cream with toppings thrown in. What I was expecting was for the flavors to come out through the ice cream instead of being a topping to a cream-based flavor, if that makes sense. I also expected their consistency to be creamier but it mirrored the consistency of supermarket ice cream. The toughness of it made it seem like it was sitting in the freezer. This was my first time trying the waffle cone here and I recommend it! It held up well and tasted great. Again, the ice cream tastes fine here but if you're like me and like creamy ice cream with great flavor, Ample Hills will be a miss. read more

Addictive! After moving back to NY I have been here an embarrassing number of times haha! My favorite flavor is their take on a rice krispies treats which I believe is called snap mallow pop - tasts just like a marshmallow. I have also tried their ooey gooey butter cake, oatmeal lace, celebration cake (which would be my second favorite so far) and recommend them all. Celebration cake tastes like a birthday cake with hints of lemon frosting that are sweet but not overpowering. Seating is limited but they have some seating outside which is nice on warmer days and they are usually very nice about letting you sample flavors although it's usually busy so be mindful of those waiting on line. There is a dog bowl outside but dogs are not allowed inside as I learned on a recent visit with a dog owner. Looking forward to trying more flavors! read more
