I was at this small ice cream/ice pop spot with a handful of others after going to the excellent Bong nearby. The staff since I was friendly and I tried a couple flavors before settling on two which were $8.50 with one scoop being $6 and three being $10 I believe with the scoop sizes being pretty big. In terms of ice cream texture, it's not as creamy as some other spots but I don't mind a thicker ice cream and the sorbet was not too icy which was definitely a plus. I went with one ice cream and one sorbet with those being the Sorrel Rum and the Soursop Ice Cream. While I usually prefer ice cream pretty heavily over sorbets because of texture, I preferred the sorrel as it was strongly flavored and just outstanding. I love sorrel having had it multiple times because of my workplace and this was a excellent version with a bit of sourness but not too much and a bit of spice presumably from the rum or some other spices they use for the sorrel with both being likely. The soursop was a bit lighter but still had enough guanabana flavor to be unique (though without the texture of course) and I would still recommend it. I also tried someone else's Guava Cheesecake Ice Cream which I also liked and I was happy that it wasn't overly sweetened as many guava pastries/ treats are. I would be very happy if this place opened up a location outside of Crown Heights as I liked the flavors a lot and it would be a nice spin on the general ice cream places usually located in Manhattan or the Asian ones popping up. I think LES would be perfect for instance but for now, there's definitely a possibility I would go back down here and get more of this if I'm going to be going back here for dinner or something similar.
Very friendly service. Samples are provided. The quality of the ice cream and ice pops is authentic and unmatched. The venue is medium sized and beautiful decorated with Caribbean memorabilia. No seating space.
Island Pops provided a great addition to our Juneteenth Celebration last night. Our community arranged a party and it was crazy busy with the children out of school for the day. I had to hurry to take photos while the Island Pops owner and his coworker set up. I grabbed two popsicle flavors after the employee gave me a run down according to my allergies. The all natural fruit flavors of Mango and Guava were great. It was a fun party I enjoyed with my friends. I recommend you consider contacting Island Pops to have their Popup at your summer parties. They're cool and they keep you cool!!
I strongly associate summer in Brooklyn with Island Pops. Me and my kid enjoying an ice pop, while sitting outside the shop (or on a stoop nearby) and watching the traffic on Nostrand Avenue go by. Just chilling. I love the sorrel popsicle, while my kid really likes the mango one. Oh, and their ice cream is delicious too!
My friend and I decided to check out Island Pops around 1:30pm on a Saturday to try their unique ice cream flavors! There is no seating area, so that may be something to consider with the blazing summer heat. I got the soursop ($6.24), and my friend got ovaltine ($6.24 + 0.52 for sugar cone). Regarding the heat issue, my friend's cone started melting like crazy as soon as we exited the shop, making it a little harder to eat. Flavor-wise, we sampled different flavors before settling on the ones we picked, and I will say the flavors are unique! I cannot speak to their authenticity, but it did seem like effort was put into creating the flavors. Texture-wise, the ice cream was slightly less creamy than my ideal texture, but that's more personal preference. Customer service was fantastic! I asked a lot of questions to know the flavor profiles, and everyone in the store was extremely welcoming, helpful, and non-judgmental. The descriptions were also on-point! Overall, if you're open to trying new Caribbean flavors, head over to Island Pops!
Stopped in this establishment recently and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and diversity of the ice cream flavors. They feature blends of Caribbean flavors such as Guinness caramel, coconut, mango, and guava. I had a scoop of Guinness caramel and a scoop of coconut. By the taste, you can tell that they use quality ingredients. The ice cream is delicious and remarkably not overly sweet. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Letting you sample the different flavors. The store is small and it shows when many folks are trying to get in. Definitely will be back.
05/10/23: Yes I am a repeat offender. In the neighborhood, warm pleasant day had to show some love. Sampled the vegan soursop and Passionfruit cake, wasn't a fan. I sampled the Sorrel Rum sorbet. Soold.. ordered my scope. It was refreshing not overly sweet but umm could do with some more rum.. lol. Went outside in their sitting area, sat enjoyed my scoop and went on my merry way. While sampling and placing order had great conversation with owner himself. Extremely pleasant and engaging. Will continue to support whenever in the neighborhood.
My friend and I were wrapping up a culinary tour of the Crown Heights area. I knew from my Yelp research that Island Pops would be an excellent place for dessert. We selected four scoop samplers. Nutmeg, Soursop, Passion Fruitcake, and Guava. The woman working the counter was very nice and took pride in the ice cream that she helped make. We had a pleasant conversation about the food in the neighborhood. We were able to sit on a comfortable bench outside of the shop, not bad for a March evening. My favorite flavor was the nutmeg, it was so good that it transported me back to my childhood of sneaking raw egg eggnog with loads of nutmeg. The rest of the flavors were delicious also. Definitely a great ice cream shop to have in the neighborhood!
After a hearty vegan meal on a hot summer day. My friend suggested we cool off with some ice cream from island pops. We arrived 30 mins before closing. The parlor was clean and bright. Very well air conditioned, which was welcome after walking in the blistering heat. There was one girl working behind the counter. It was pretty small area for customers. No more than 5-6 people could fit. There were 2 people in front of us and a whole mob of people walked in after us. So packed some had to wait outside. The girl behind the counter seemed tired and annoyed. She wasn't the friendliest. Stared at you blankly even when you smiled. No you welcome after being thanked multiple times. It's aggravating because I don't experience attitude service at Van Leeuwen. Being of Caribbean American descent we get a bad rep for customer service and island pops is unfortunately no different. My bestie and I got 2 scoops each. She got guava cheesecake and passionfruit cake. I got Guinness caramel and soursop. All 4 ice cream textures were very creamy and not too sweet. However my flavors left more to be desired. The soursop had a very mild flavor. You literally had to let it melt on your tongue or you wouldn't taste it. Soursop in general, already has a mild flavor and if you're going to use it to make ice cream you need to use a lot of it. 3/5. The Guinness caramel was just bitter, bland with a hint of sweet. I tasted no caramel aspect at all. I was excited for this and it fell flat. I don't know if it was an off batch but no. 1/5. The guava cheesecake was delicious. Bursting with real guava flavor and pieces of guava cheese or cheesecake. 5/5. The passion fruit cake had actual cake pieces in it and amazing passionfruit flavor 4/5. I wanted to take my best friend's cup. My friend and I sat outside at one of the 2 four tops they provided. They close at 9. But the employee locked the door at 8:55. At least 7 customers tried to patronize the shop between 8:55 and 9. I would say come at least 15 mins before closing to ensure you get your fix. A few cents shy of $20 for the 2 orders. I would go again and taste flavors before ordering.
Island pops takes Caribbean favorites and elevates it to new heights in ice cream and ice pops. This was my second time going and I'm glad I stopped by on opening day. I got the soursop ice cream and it was delicious. The ice cream was creamy, flavorful, and tasted like soursop! The service was quick and the team was very kind about samples. If you're looking for ice cream this summer with a taste of the islands, be sure to stop here!
Imagine wanting to go here every time you visit your sister but they don't open until 3. That was my life up until two weeks ago where I picked up my phone and begged them to let me in lol. Seriously I called like it's 80 degrees out what gives. And I was invited to try out THE BEST ICECREAM in Brooklyn. NY has some AMAZING things and this; THIS is one of them. Tropical flavors like sorrel, guava and papaya with cake absolutely dominate! I came for the ovaltine and left smiling! Shout out to this small mom and pop shop making it happen in Nostrand 5/5 highly recommended. Check the hours before you go and be prepared to park and walk and then walk back to your car in bliss. Absolutely a Brooklyn Hidden Gem.
Very cute small ice cream shop with Caribbean inspired flavors. You will not be finding vanilla or chocolate here and honestly I love that. I got the passionfruit sorbet and it was very refreshing and not too sweet. Also tried the ovaltine which was good too
First, the Service is TOP TIER! Daughter Asia indulged every "taste" request with a smile and a ton of patience, even making suggestions. At the end, we advised her to assist other customers and she KEPT checking on us to ensure we were okay with waiting. She's a great part of the experience. It's a quaint spot, which makes you feel like you're pulling up to an actual Island bar for these sweet indulgences. ALL flavors are amazing, it's just a matter of preference. Our favorite, along with the other Patrons, was, HANDS DOWN, the Sorrel Sorbet! We also enjoyed the Island Coconut, which was a soft balance of fresh creamy coconut flavor. Do not expect flakes of coconut just in case you're looking for texture. Pure smoothness. We loved the Passionfruit Cake ice cream and paired it with the Sorrel Sorbet. Sorrel was also paired with the Coconut. You can request housemade Waffle Cones or a bowl with a piece of Milo (chocolate) Waffle cone for a nice bite. Honorable mentions were the Honey Roasted, Grapenut, Soursop, Tamarindo, and good Ole classic Vanilla with an Island twist. They do switch flavors so always check in. You can never go wrong. Island Pops is a definite destination for a sweet taste of Island Life! Oh, there's sweatshirts to represent a number of the staple Islands: Barbados, Trini, JamRock, Guyana, and Haiti...guess which one was sold out! read more
Small space but they make good use of it. Everything is so bright and colorful. Tasted the coconut but I've had better so I went with the sorrel sorbet. Loved the sorrel sorbet omg it was so sweet and so cinnamon forward. Service was very friendly. read more

Why have I not reviewed this place. I've been here plenty of times and the staff is so friendly. (Shout out to Salim for always be so sweet and happy.) Their frozen treats are so delicious and fresh. Island Pops make ice cream, sorbet, Popsicles and more. Their sweet treats are made out of fresh natural ingredients in variety of tropical, boozy and fruity flavors. They also do limited edition flavors such as during Carnival time (Las' Lap edition). The Rum and Coke flavor was so good that was the first time in my life I finished a pint by myself within a week. From the classic flavors I love the Passion Fruit Cake, Honey Roasted Peanut, and Sorrel Rum Sorbet. They now offer delivery with a minimum of three for shipping and are available for sale in limited local shops. read more

Fresh, fruity, and delicious are all our favorite words, Geraldine!…
Get their vegan banana bread and pair it with their Island Coconut ice cream - heaven on earth! I'm not even remotely vegan. Seems they have a wide variety of seasonal flavors, so I tried this combo a few months back but forgot to post about it. Returned again today for a pint to go, sorrel rum is one of my favorites here but I decided to try the Ponche de Crème (trini egg nog) with black cake just because I coincidentally picked up a slice of black cake from Royal Bakery down the street... ended up being an extra decadent treat ;)!! Was pleasantly surprised by the generous chunks of black cake in the ice cream... arguably as good or better than Royal Bakery (our little secret!). Never tried a flavor I didn't like, and they'll kindly let you try a few before deciding, and give good personalized recommendations. Small counter with a bench and bistro table outside to enjoy on a nice day. Please support these lovely people on Nostrand Ave. read more
I really like this place. It's a family operated...Black-Owned....Caribbean Ice Cream Shop. *Takes a breath* The frozen treats are quality. They have popsicles, ice cream, baked goods, and some coffee & tea options. The flavors are traditionally Caribbean. Soursop. Passion fruit. Guinness caramel. Ovaltine. Coconut. Sorrel Rum sorbet. Just to name a few... It's a nice introduction for folks who aren't used to these flavors! What I will say is I wish the flavors were more intense. The ice cream for me is tasty and refreshing but the flavors are delicate and I wish it came through stronger. I grew up eating Soursop. I grew up drinking Sorrel. I grew up avoiding Ovaltine lol. So I know the intensity of all these flavors. And it could just be dependent on the batch, slight alterations, and experimentation. I definitely believe that they are invested, they care about their product, and they care about diversifying options. They are giving the neighborhood something different though we do have Scoops and Taste the Tropics...for those who know. Ya know! Stop in. Show some love. Wear Yo Dang Mask! Social Distance! And enjoy some treats. read more

Passed by here today with my sister & our children. We absolutely loved it! The shop is just the right size and they have nice wooden benches inside & outside for sitting. The flavors vary and rotate often. I had the pleasure of trying a Passion Fruit Ice Pop and it was delicious to say the least. I also purchased the Honey Roasted Peanut and Rum r Raisin pints both are a 10/10. Very creamy and rich flavor. Before I left I sampled the rum punch sorbet and instantly knew I would be back to get a pint of it in the near future. It had so many flavor notes giving such a great fruity punch! Can't wait to tell all my ppl and try all the other treats they offer! Yes, they have vegan treats to for my vegan fam lol. read more

Now y'all know I love me a black owned business. This one in particular. Is owned and Operated by a Husband and wife team to my understanding. My partner and I were so eager for grapenut ice cream that we ran to this store not even realizing it was not open yet. However that didn't stop us. We chose to wait . Of course my indecisive self saw the menu and couldn't decide so we chose a pint of grapenut and a 4 scoop sampler, $8 is not bad To try authentic flavors of the Caribbean Here's what I got: Ovaltine( I think that's how you spell it) Grapenut Soursop Rum punch( um well that one was unexpected if you want a boozy snack that's the one I recommend). Thank you to the Young woman who let us in a little early and gave me the Loc stylist information Keep on Keeping on read more

Although this was my first time at a Jamaican ice cream place, it's certainly far from my first time eating ice cream If you ask me, ice cream is the perfect dessert, and this place delivers. The texture was phenomenal - so creamy, rich and thick. But not hard as a rock, as ice cream like that often is, à la Haagen-Dazs. I got a scoop of Grape-Nut and a scoop of Guinness Caramel. The Guinness Caramel has immediately entered something like top 5 favorite ice creams ever - wow. You gotta try it, especially if it's your first time at a Jamaican ice cream place, like it was for me. Apparently, it's a classic! Only complaint was it was insanely pricey. $8 for two scoops! That's the only reason I went down a star. Don't get me wrong - absolutely worth it for a first time try. But I certainly wouldn't be coming regularly at that price if I was nearby. read more

Tom, our Guinness Caramel flavor makes regulars out of many ice cream…
All I can say is bomb. Bomb. And bomb. This sorbet was so refreshing I opted to come here instead of Taste of Tropics which is another popular ice cream spot in Brooklyn. But if it's one thing West Indians and Caribbeans are going to do is make sure they have variety and great food/desserts. I opted for Island Pops only because I wanted to try their Sorrel Rum Sorbet. Although their options aren't as extensive as Taste of Tropics, they do have more fruity sorbet options which was what I wanted. Must try! The sorrel taste isn't overpowering and you can taste a slight hint of rum which gives it a nice touch. You won't be mad so go grab your sorbet or ice cream from Island Pops. The servers are nice and polite too. read more

I'd been longing for these flavours for a couple of years (since my last trip to the Caribbean). While the flavors were on point for most flavors, the butterfat content didn't meet the mark in all but one flavor. There is metered parking. I arrived at the door a bit past 3pm on a weekday and it was still locked. The person who eventually waited on me, looked up and went back to what she was doing like I wasn't there. Had I not traveled so far, I would not have bothered even making a purchase. I went to the car and called to inquire about when they open. They confirmed the 3pm opening. I told her I would be back. When being waited on she said she'd lost track of the time. We got the soursop, Ovaltine, rum and raisin, and passionfruit cake. The soursop was the most sought after flavor and it came up short in flavor and fat content, it was granular. I left it on the counter to soften a bit and it was just an icy consistency. The flavors were on point for the passionfruit cake and the rum & raisin but but the consistency was not it needed to be, it was icy but not creamy. The most creamy and flavorful flavor of the batch was the Ovaltine. I was so disappointed but it's probably a good thing this was not a love connection. This experience has inspired a purchase of an ice cream maker where I can experiment with my own flavors, including the much coveted soursop. read more

We came to get Ice cream and it was amazing. I had the sorrel rum and the also the tropical sundae. I believe both flavors were really good. I had the pleasure of having their treats at some festivals and fetes in Brooklyn (pre-pandemic). With no live events, I finally got the chance to visit the physical store and boy I wasn't disappointed. Their flavors definitely have a Caribbean vibe and reflect the African, Indian, Chinese influences on the region. I truly enjoyed their Barfi Icecream for Diwali, tastes SO scary close to the actual Indian sweet. Their guinness icecream and coconut are also my favs. But the real winner for me is the Rum & Coke. A very unlikely combo for some, but there's something about it that has me hooked. I appreciate the service here, next on my list is to try the coffee. We ordered two ice pops which were refreshing and delicious. The sorrel flavor was fantastic - sort of a hibiscus-like flavor with nutmeg or something similar. The mango pop was also great. Let's be honest who is dying for ice cream but tired of getting the same ole staples all the time??? Well if you are like me then you were searching and found this gem! I tried 4 flavors then had to come back and buy 2 pints for home. I had the Sorrel Rum and coffee biscuit. My companion had the Grapenut and Guinness Caramel. The Sorrel Rum is closer to a sorbet but definitely a great scoop. I loved that the spices used did not overpower the rum flavor or have a bitter after taste. Definitely a great try if you love Sorrel. Coffee biscuit was great for coffee lovers. Had a slight chocolate flavoring that i greatly appreciated. I love coffee chocolate. Grapenut was really tasty and smooth. Guinness Caramel was the true winner of the day. I could have had 4 scoops and not got tired of eating this. I left the shop and came back a hour later to bring a pint home. I can't wait to come back and try the rest of the flavors and the pops. Give yourself a treat and visit for a scoop or 5. read more
