I was at this small ice cream/ice pop spot with a handful of others after going to the excellent Bong nearby. The staff since I was friendly and I tried a couple flavors before settling on two which were $8.50 with one scoop being $6 and three being $10 I believe with the scoop sizes being pretty big. In terms of ice cream texture, it's not as creamy as some other spots but I don't mind a thicker ice cream and the sorbet was not too icy which was definitely a plus. I went with one ice cream and one sorbet with those being the Sorrel Rum and the Soursop Ice Cream. While I usually prefer ice cream pretty heavily over sorbets because of texture, I preferred the sorrel as it was strongly flavored and just outstanding. I love sorrel having had it multiple times because of my workplace and this was a excellent version with a bit of sourness but not too much and a bit of spice presumably from the rum or some other spices they use for the sorrel with both being likely. The soursop was a bit lighter but still had enough guanabana flavor to be unique (though without the texture of course) and I would still recommend it. I also tried someone else's Guava Cheesecake Ice Cream which I also liked and I was happy that it wasn't overly sweetened as many guava pastries/ treats are. I would be very happy if this place opened up a location outside of Crown Heights as I liked the flavors a lot and it would be a nice spin on the general ice cream places usually located in Manhattan or the Asian ones popping up. I think LES would be perfect for instance but for now, there's definitely a possibility I would go back down here and get more of this if I'm going to be going back here for dinner or something similar. read more

I went to Island Pops at approximately 5:30 pm Wednesday May 13th with my sister. I looked at a price list for drinks on a chalk board posted on the wall. I ordered sorrel which was listed at $5. The woman at the counter prepared my drink, and I gave her $5 for payment. She then informed me that the sorrel was $7. I looked a the chalk board again to confirm the price, and asked her about the difference in price. She said she hadn't yet been able to change the price on the chalk board, and mentioned something about summer drink prices. She didn't offer me the price that was posted. I think that would have been the correct thing to do for a customer. She didn't seem to care. She had already prepared the drink so I paid and left the store. I live in the area, but this was only the second time I've ever purchase d anything from the store. What I experienced was very bad customer service, and just poor business in general. I had to hurry to take photos while the Island Pops owner and his coworker set up. I grabbed two popsicle flavors after the employee gave me a run down according to my allergies. My friend and I decided to check out Island Pops around 1:30pm on a Saturday to try their unique ice cream flavors! There is no seating area, so that may be something to consider with the blazing summer heat. I got the soursop ($6.24), and my friend got ovaltine ($6.24 + 0.52 for sugar cone). Regarding the heat issue, my friend's cone started melting like crazy as soon as we exited the shop, making it a little harder to eat. Flavor-wise, we sampled different flavors before settling on the ones we picked, and I will say the flavors are unique! I cannot speak to their authenticity, but it did seem like effort was put into creating the flavors. Texture-wise, the ice cream was slightly less creamy than my ideal texture, but that's more personal preference. Customer service was fantastic! My friend and I were wrapping up a culinary tour of the Crown Heights area. I knew from my Yelp research that Island Pops would be an excellent place for dessert. We selected four scoop samplers. Nutmeg, Soursop, Passion Fruitcake, and Guava. The woman working the counter was very nice and took pride in the ice cream that she helped make. We had a pleasant conversation about the food in the neighborhood. We were able to sit on a comfortable bench outside of the shop, not bad for a March evening. My favorite flavor was the nutmeg, it was so good that it transported me back to my childhood of sneaking raw egg eggnog with loads of nutmeg. The rest of the flavors were delicious also. No more than 5-6 people could fit. There were 2 people in front of us and a whole mob of people walked in after us. So packed some had to wait outside. It's aggravating because I don't experience attitude service at Van Leeuwen. Being of Caribbean American descent we get a bad rep for customer service and island pops is unfortunately no different. My bestie and I got 2 scoops each. She got guava cheesecake and passionfruit cake. I got Guinness caramel and soursop. All 4 ice cream textures were very creamy and not too sweet. However my flavors left more to be desired. The soursop had a very mild flavor. You literally had to let it melt on your tongue or you wouldn't taste it. Soursop in general, already has a mild flavor and if you're going to use it to make ice cream you need to use a lot of it. 3/5. The Guinness caramel was just bitter, bland with a hint of sweet. I tasted no caramel aspect at all. I was excited for this and it fell flat. I don't know if it was an off batch but no. 1/5. The guava cheesecake was delicious. Bursting with real guava flavor and pieces of guava cheese or cheesecake. 5/5. The passion fruit cake had actual cake pieces in it and amazing passionfruit flavor 4/5. I wanted to take my best friend's cup. My friend and I sat outside at one of the 2 four tops they provided. They close at 9. But the employee locked the door at 8:55. At least 7 customers tried to patronize the shop between 8:55 and 9. I would say come at least 15 mins before closing to ensure you get your fix. A few cents shy of $20 for the 2 orders. Had I not traveled so far, I would not have bothered even making a purchase. I went to the car and called to inquire about when they open. They confirmed the 3pm opening. I told her I would be back. When being waited on she said she'd lost track of the time. We got the soursop, Ovaltine, rum and raisin, and passionfruit cake. The soursop was the most sought after flavor and it came up short in flavor and fat content, it was granular. I left it on the counter to soften a bit and it was just an icy consistency. The flavors were on point for the passionfruit cake and the rum & raisin but but the consistency was not it needed to be, it was icy but not creamy. The most creamy and flavorful flavor of the batch was the Ovaltine. I was so disappointed but it's probably a good thing this was not a love connection. This experience has inspired a purchase of an ice cream maker where I can experiment with my own flavors, including the much coveted soursop. read more

Upon walking in the spot is fairly small and I was looking at the names and flavors. The icecream case itself does not have any names so it was a constant , which one is that. The prepackaged 10 dollar pints were limited in the refrigerator and I was told they don't fill a pint up for you if the flavor isn't there. The woman serving wasn't the most friendliest, didn't feel the Island love. I tasted two flavors and got two Scoops of the peanut Butter and one scoop of the guiness caramel . Both were ok. Last time I visited was a lot better than the first time. My very first time visiting, the guy pulled a fast one on me; he wouldn't fill the ice cream scoop all the way. It was like hollowed shells instead of full scoops. He had figured out how to half scoop the ice cream scoop and he considered that a full scoop.
