Came here last night, this place was popping but the staff kept things moving along. Got to sample the munchies and their PB chocolate flavor. Decided to get one scoop of munchies and one scoop of "oh captain, my captain". Fantastic ice cream, really enjoyed eating it on their Adirondack chairs outside while people watching. Review during COVID: I was checking Ample Hills Instagram account to monitor when they would be open and alas, last weekend they announced they would be open. I quickly proceeded to bike over there on Sunday as I had been dreaming of the Munchies for months. The place was open, with only a few people allowed in at a time and a line outside. I ordered a cone with the munchies and the snapmallow pop flavors, and my partner got the mango and Gowanus flavors in a pretzel cone (which isn't typically at the Vanderbilt location, and he claims is his favorite flavor). The munchies 5/5 is one of my all-time favorite ice cream flavors. It's got the perfect texture with a hint of salt and a vanilla sweet base. I had heard really great things about this place for ice cream, and they did not disappoint. There was a line when we stopped by on a warm Saturday afternoon, but it moved pretty quickly and I appreciate how they enforce social distancing by only letting a few people in at a time / having hand sanitizer available at the register. Recently was invited here for a birthday party. Cute little spot located on the corner. So this is where it gets tricky and why I took one Star away. When you first walk in it has a damped wet smell. Which was a little nauseating to me, who knows maybe it just me but that's what I smelled. So that's that and I'm glad I got that out the way. Now let me finish with the review. The party Host oh boy he was just awesome , patient, energetic, entertaining and hilarious. He was very patient and explained everything in detail for a 5 year old little person to understand. What makes this place unique is definitely the bicycle that sits in the middle of the store that you get to sit on and paddle to help in the process of making your own ice cream. There was certainly a lot of hype for this ice cream shop before I visited. I was told it was really good and that there would be long lines. We arrived fairly late, around 10pm on a Friday night, and there was indeed a massively long line for an ice cream shop at this time of night which was a bit of a shock to me. Because of the long lines, we decided to come back again the next day. On Saturday, we dropped by in the early afternoon and got in at a fortunate time when there were no lines. I liked the fact that they gave you samples of any ice cream you wanted to try out. For a double scoop, the price was $5. We ended up getting scoops of strawberry, mango, coconut, and cotton candy. While I thought the flavors tasted fine, the scoops were not stacked properly, and mine ended up falling off after a few licks which was really sad. Aside from that, I thought the flavors were not much different than pints that you could get at the grocery store for much cheaper. While I thought the staff was friendly, I didn't like having to wait in the long lines, the ice cream didn't sit well on the cones, and the offered flavors could've been more original. read more

They do a really great job at all their locations of ensuring you feel safe, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees are super friendly, wearing masks and gloves and they have ample (haha) hand sanitizer available. In our household, it's become a birthday ritual to order ice cream cakes for one another from here. Having been here many years ago when they first opened, never could I have imagined Ample Hills would become an ice cream empire in NYC. Even though Ample Hills has since spawned multiple locations, and bigger locations, this location is still the mecca of them all and it still buzzes with customers. My wife and I came through on a Friday evening at about 8pm and there were plenty of customers going in and out of the creamery. This location is probably one of the smaller locations, with just a few tables and seats along with 2 booths. On a busy evening, like the one we dropped in on, tables and seats were far and few in between, but we came at the right time when a booth was available. I won't go into detail about all of the flavors, but there are plenty of complex flavors to choose from. Since it was my wife's first time here, we decided to get the ice cream flight for $10.50, which consisted of 6 mini scoops of any flavors of our choosing. We didn't want to get your everyday flavors so we went with: The Commodore (A Vanderbilt location exclusive flavor) Sweet as Honey Salted Crack Caramel Summer of Love Strawberries & Cream (Although rather plain, it was recommended by our server) And 1 more that I couldn't remember. To summarize, the flavors were all good, but I'm not a sweet tooth type of person, so the flavors were too sweet for me. The texture of all of the ice creams were good and the flavors really shined, but a majority of them were too gooey sweet for me, except the Strawberries & Cream and Summer of Love, which were more on the fruitier side. A majority of the flavors served aren't my cup of tea, but I'm pretty sure a majority of kids and people will love them. One more observation we noticed here were that a few of the employees we interacted with didn't seem like the coziest of folks. Specifically, a female server we had didn't really give us a smile, much advice or interaction as she waited for us to choose our flight flavors. We did have some indecisiveness and it seemed like it irked her a bit. In addition, when I asked the cashier what we should do with the ice cream flight container, he didn't say a word and just took it from me. None of these interactions are much, but a smile and a few words go a long way these days for customer service and leave a good impression, however small it is. Other than the lack of enthusiasm or communication from the employees, the ice cream was solid, but very sweet for our liking. However, it would probably be perfect for sweets lovers. read more

The ice cream is so thick you won't need more than that. It doesn't just have stuff that comes from a cow. Several vegan flavors are offered. They only have a couple at a time. It seems they have the chocolate a lot. This is about $5 for a small bowl, which doesn't look like much. It's pretty thick, so you're getting more than it appears. While walking to the front of the store, I noticed that in one of the display windows that there was a young girl that was riding on the display bike which I guess was the norm since no one said anything.... how cool is that. There are about four to five tables for seating and counter space with bar stools as well. I love whimsical art and decor and Ample Hills seems to enjoy it as well by the decor inside of the business. To be honest, I was so excited and fascinated that I didn't even check out ALL of the flavors offered. As soon as my eyes saw that Summer of love ice cream, it was as if we were connected and I had to try it. Summer of love was vanilla ice cream with rainbow cake and I believed chunks of vanilla as well. They offered different cones other than the standard cones for an additional charge of $1.50. I love pretzels so when I saw that they had one, the decision was made to put my scoops in it. When I tell you that ice cream made me feel so wonderful inside and I honestly think that I mentally transported myself to my 10 year old self during the time that I sat and relished that ice cream cone.
