Ball Ground near Cumming Roadside BBQ We recently moved into the area and finally gave Amos BBQ a try. I picked up a variety to see what was good or good enough to return for. This is the kind of place you get take out. They have a drive thru plus patio and inside dining. It's a very cool very old building with a lot of character. I could see enjoying the patio on a perfect weather day. It's definitely gives the vibe of a country Roadside Cafe type place you come upon on long road trips. We tried.... 1 lb chopped beef (we won't buy it again) 2 Bbq pork sandwich (small but tasty) Coleslaw (very simple - very good) Fries (excellent! Fresh cut potatoes perfect crisp and salted to perfection) Fried pickles (huge hit with my Fried Pickle connoisseur - spears not chips served with Ranch however she said they are so good they don't need a dipping sauce) 3 orders Banana Pudding (I'm a fan!) Mac & Cheese BBQ sauce for $2.50 Kind of Pricy for the portions. The sides are very small - maybe 4 oz containers. Amex Total $69.18 They use an old style register. Itemized receipt just shows input price. I saw an extra charge of $2.55 error on their part. They also charge a credit card fee. Would we return? I don't have a picture for this one, but had to write a quick review. My husband was out working and decided to pop by here to get a loaded spud and brought me home loaded tots. It was a TON of food and so delicious. Potatoes and barbecue just work! I've never gone in myself, but anytime my husband goes he always gets good food and says the staff is friendly. I was excited to try it myself and will definitely go back to try more items one day or have him bring me something different to try. read more

All of the meat and the bbq sauce they give you is pretty good. Not a fan of the Mac and cheese. A little bland. I would definitely come back for just the ribs. They were moist and flavorful. I ate the food before I could take a picture. read more

The barbecue is okay, but the service is terrible! We had to ask about every single item we ordered as only our sandwiches were delivered to our table. Sides were brought out one at a time, after being requested. I ordered a bottle of water and had to go back to the counter to ask twice for it. My to go order never came out and when we requested it the employee demanded to know whether we had paid for it or not! The cola machine was out of syrup and my husband had to ask them to fix this as well. Have tried Amos a couple times since it's existed. Looks cool, but the food is just bland, no smoke flavor to the meat, no flavor, fries are limp and squishy, all around pretty terrible. Don't see a reason to try it again since it always a disappointment. So much potential here wasted. read more

Awesome place we found on our way to the mountains. Awesome pulled pork, amazing ribs, great portions. And while this isn't necessarily bbq, the best fried okra I've ever had. Light, crispy, hot. Staff was super nice and accommodating. So good we made a trip back the same week! read more

Ok after reading the good comments I guess I will be the bad guy. The restaurant was clean and there was even a wood stove. Building has a soft spot in the floor in front of the cash register. I love the feeling of being in an actual cabin setting and eating. However the food, the bbq was either old or it tasted like chipped beef style with sauce on it. It tasted awful. My husband & I went in for the first time today. Unfortunately, once we were greeted at the counter, I knew we should have turned around & left due to the unpleasant attitude of the server. We both ordered the beef plate, & it was covered in grease (floating in the plate). Fries & okra was burnt as well. To pay $36 only to leave one's plate for trash is disappointing at best! Went for breakfast and got a chicken biscuits and a side of gravy. Gravy had a very off taste but I chalked it up to it being very a preference and taste sort of thing. I went to Amos's BBQ on December 27th, 2020. I am happy to report that the porch cat is still alive and kicking- well not kicking... He's really friendly! So, definitely give him a little pat in a scratch behind the ears and maybe save a little token of bbq to give to him as you leave. I had the pork plate with fried okra and their Brunswick stew. I wasn't displeased with the pulled pork. I would've liked it to have been more smoky, but it was perfectly tender and wonderfully moist. There Carolina style sauce is pretty great too! It isn't too spicy and it's not too sweet, it's right there in between... A good mild sauce. The portion for their single side of okra is kind of ridiculous. I shared mine with my dad and it was as if he had ordered an entire order of okra himself once we split them between our two plates. My dad had the pulled pork barbecue sandwich and commented that he wished it was smokier as well. The Brunswick stew was actually really interesting. It wasn't that I really, really liked it. It was just that the flavor was, initially,hard to place. Don't get me wrong- it was really good! It's just, if your used to the peppery or sweet variety- well, this is neither! There was a spiciness to it and it was smokier than their smoked meat on its own, but the most Interesting/confusing part of the flavors, was that it had a sulfur-like flavor to it. When I first took a bite, my initial reaction was to say: " Huh... It's got a different flavor to it... It reminds me of the Fourth of July." Of course, after sampling the stew a few more times, I realized that it had a flavor in there that reminds me precisely of when I'm setting off fireworks... It's not as though it smells like sulfur. It just had an odd-but-good palette that added dimension to its flavor. Definitely a must try. I love the atmosphere and the old-fashioned wood stove. They actually do burn wood in the stove, at least in the winter! As to Covid-19 measures, the staff were wearing gloves and masks, seating was limited, and social distancing was politely enforced. While I won't give it a solid five because the smoke in this just isn't there in the meat, the stew, the atmosphere, and the generous portions will bring us back! read more

Chicken was great, fried pickles was awesome, service friendly and good. One small when the sell baby back ribs it is big bones and the meet is tough. When you envision a remote, but not so out of the way quintessential Georgia BBQ joint, wafting the aroma of blue smoke, set to a backdrop of a place time seems to have forgotten, this is it! The price was really reasonable, food was pretty good, and more importantly it just felt good to eat simple BBQ without all the glitz and glam, the way it was intended! I stopped in and instantly got a feeling. From the exterior condition /shape of the building, to the group of 20 somethings hanging around outback, and walking in to see the hostess counter person wearing a mangy sweatshirt that said GO AWAY and the chef looked more like a dirty auto mechanic than a chef. So let's just get to it. I got the pork beef and ribs. The baby backs were ok. Meaty. The pork and the beef, both chopped ( that's how you mix in older product with newer ). I watched the chef shuffle across the kitchen floor and warm up my Mac n cheese in the microwave as well as a big 2 gallon plastic container of the chopped beef. Disgusting and disappointing. The Brunswick stew was greasy and tasteless. Everything was lacking any kind of basic flavor. Even the meats were bland. There was no flavor slow cooked into them. You can see the picture below of how they look so similar. I usually try a resto a second time because you can absolutely have a bad day. This place has given up. Ordered a sampler platter, worst 19$ I've ever spent on a bbq plater.. Greasy chopped, grizzly meat, Texas toast that wasnt made with any butter and burned. Meat tasted old as shoeleather.. I can't fathom why anyone would call the food here terrible. Listen, I'm a GA native and I know there are different styles all over but I'm also not an uptight BBQ snob and I know this place is what you should expect from a 'cue shack in rural GA and it is AWESOME. It actually reminds me a lot of the BBQ I grew up on from Melear's and Harold's way back in the day. The meat is tasty. They have a very good sauce that would be appealing to most palates. And the stew. Let's talk about the stew. If you read through my past reviews of BBQ places then you will see that I'm uber picky about Brunswick stew. And I call it crap when it's crap (and it almost always is at commercial joints). This is GOOD stew. Sure, I'd tweak it a bit if making it myself but I actually seek out the stew here and that is really uncommon for me. It's a dive, which I think is part of the charm. I'm glad they're there and within a ten minute drive from home for my BBQ cravings. Also, the folks are nice and it's a small business. Go support them...not just because it's good for the community but because the food is really good. read more

I ordered the beef sandwich or should i say fat sandwich. Couldn't eat it. My arteries are getting clogged just looking at it. And to be honest I'm sure the owners don't care about this review but be warned. I used to own a bbq restaurant and i wouldn't even buy such garbage for brisket or what ever beef cut this was. As a fellow pit master I am always on the look out for a small, hole in the wall bbq joint. Sometimes these little shacks can be secret treasures with the best bbq you ever tasted....Unfortunately, this place ain't it! When I tell you this food is terrible I mean it's TERRIBLE. None of the meats have any smoke flavor to begin with and they hardly put any sauce on it. If you don't know how to smoke it, you darn sure better know how to season it and give it a good sauce. All 3 meats we're bland and the quality of the meat was tough and chewy. The potato salad is dry and too much garlic, beans don't have any brown sugar, fries were ok but greasy, onion rings sucked and they ran out of Cole slaw and ribs. Do yourself a favor and come to my house if you want a proper bbq meal. This place is a joke! read more

Sampler plate was good, 3 nice ribs, good potions of BBQ Chicken & Pork. Homemade (Brunswick) stew was flavorful and meaty. BBQ sauce had very good hickory flavor, but their potato salad was thick, dry and a little bland. Will try another side next time. Priced at a very reasonable rate......Got a lot of food (took home about half) for the same price as a Half Rack of Overpriced Ribs at other places. Just 5 tables inside to sit & eat, but 2 huge outdoor covered tables to sit a family when the humidity allows. read more

A good start, but could be a little better. I recently moved up to this area, and am slowly trying to experience all of the local places. The area where Amos's BBQ is located has a couple businesses that I frequent, so it was only natural that I end up trying the BBQ joint. I only wished that my lazy butt would've gotten out of bed a little earlier to try their breakfast. This spot is neat. It's made to look like a much older building than it really is (or is it?), and it's easily accessible from 369 and 372 if you like big roundabouts. Once in the building, I was greeted by young folks, and a nice older gentleman that I assume is the owner. We had the usual small-talk about the weather and such, and it made me feel at home. Like I mentioned earlier, I actually came here to get breakfast, but on this day, I woke up late and ended up having my mind changed to barbecue instantly upon realizing what time it was. I felt like Adam Sandler's character in the movie Big Daddy where he arrives at 11am to find out that lunch is being served. Anyway, I ended up ordering a couple sammiches with sides, and headed back to the homestead. The bbq is pretty good, and the fries are good to match. There isn't anything really over the top here, but it's simple pulled-pork with fried potatoes. I really need to come back and eat there to try more things, and try the breakfast that I originally intended to get. That part is on me though. read more

We were on vacation from Columbus, Ohio, and one thing we always do while on vacation is to eat at local places. Well, Yelp took us to Amos and it was amazing! We had the BBQ platter, which consisted of ribs, pulled pork & beef, and sides of fries and mac & cheese, with a piece of Texas toast - it was all delicious! Especially the meats - we actually got another half rack of ribs, they were so good! Smokey, fall off the bones deliciousness. The guys there were all super nice & friendly, and they are doing BBQ right! It's the kind of place that you go up to the counter and order, and then they bring your food out to you. It's a super homey feeling, with some tables & booths inside, and also a patio area outside with picnic tables - plenty of space to sit and enjoy your ribs! The place looks like southern BBQ done right - like something out of a novel. The outside is rustic and the interior doesn't disappoint - equally disheveled and rustic. That wins high scores from me ... however the place is filthy and I'd be surprised if a health inspector would allow it to pass. Food tasted good (in my opinion ..... I had the pulled chicken and bbq beans. My wife wouldn't eat hers after she saw how it was handled and served, so it went into a takeout box and then into the trash a few days later. read more
