I came here on a Friday night around dinner time before an event on 14th Street. To my surprise, the place wasn't too busy! Soon after we sat down and ordered, however, the place started to fill up. The space itself is a bit on the small side, though they do pack a lot of tables inside. They don't take reservations, so keep that in mind if you do plan on getting to Ammanthar on a weekend night. All of the food we ordered was very tasty and of good quality. I had the bean sprouts with mushroom and tofu, which was a delightfully hearty dish while still being light. My wife had the khao soi, which was delightfully presented and tasted wonderful. The service here was very good until they got busy. Before they were busy, we were waited on promptly and often received water refills. Once the crowd started to turn up, visits to our table were much less frequent. I ended up having to go to the bar in order to pay for our check. I'll excuse the service issues when it got busy, due to the staff being very friendly and having smiles! This restaurant on 14th street has some really well spiced dishes. My group came by on a Saturday afternoon and sat at the nice window booth. The khao soi was extremely flavorful along with nice presentation. My friend liked the crispy duck they got but I thought the duck was a little over cooked. Overall I really liked the dish I got and would come back again. It took a little bit for us to get the food and our waiter wasn't the most attentive, but I also feel like this is the type of place where you come for the food instead of the service. read more

What a wonderful experience with fresh hot food delivered to the table. We walk in it is the cutest little place ever do you need to wear a mask when you come in we sat down and we're greeted by the cutest little server and she explained everything to us and what she recommended. Thai Tanic is located at a busy part of 14th, and can be a little hard to miss (next to Baan Thai). I ordered the Moo Todh Kartiem Thai lunch special, which was a well seasoned pork and a side of jasmine rice. The pork was very tasty, but also a tard bit salty. The rice/pork proportion could have also been a little less modest, as I found myself wanting a lot more rice serving for the amount the meal cost. I did a pick up, and staff was respectful and friendly. The interior was not very well lit, but pretty cozy and clean. I used to come here about 15 years ago till 8 years ago, I visited every trip. Then I haven't been back to DC for awhile till now. I was a disappointed that Thai-Tanic wasn't around, I did a little searching. Realized that they are still own by the same family, just changed their name, I was so happy! Chicken fried rice was so good. Yum Woon Sen was as good as I remember. Tom Yum was perfect for a cold winter night in DC. Pork Shoulder and sticky rice and spicy dipping fish sauce was so good. I order mild so my hubby can eat it. He thought it was spicy... HAHA which means they are legit when you do spicy, expect to get a tissue box next to you and some water or better some milk! The place has been remodeled, bright, shiny, beautiful decors, very welcoming with a small bar. I'll definitely dining in on our next visit when it allows. Plating/presentation was really creative. I ordered the braised pork shoulder (it comes with jasmine rice and a spicy sauce on the side). The meal came on a wooden plate (see picture) super cute and very different. The rice was cooked very well. I love jasmine rice. The dish is simple just the braised pork shoulder with the rice and sauce but simple is good. The spicy sauce on the side wasn't as spicy as I anticipated. I believe the base is a type of fresh sweet/sour sauce topped with a Thai spicy power. The sauce tasted a little bitter, but not overwhelming. I ended up pouring some of the sauce on the meat and dipping in it, I had sauce left over after my meal, so no worries about not having enough sauce. The pork should was juicy and well cooked. All in all, I would come here again and try another dish. The food is pretty well priced for DC meals. Slightly more expensive than other Thai restaurants though. All of the meals on the menu are accompanied by pictures which is very helpful. Appetizers were around $9/each so I just got an entree. Restaurant is a little dark, staff is really nice. read more

I am so sad to give this restaurant one star. I was here twice this week with my family. We really liked the food but last night I was absolutely shocked when the owner asked me to clean the milk spilled from my son's cup. ON THE FLOOR. It was an accident and not something on purpose. While two other servers were smiling to my apologies, the lady owner responded to me all pissed and asked me to clean. Not only I had complimented them for the food and be a courteous customer, the restaurant wasn't even full. I was so shocked I didn't want to create a scene and cleaned. After I finished she showed up with the mop. I want to notice I wasn't done with my food. So we paid and left. If you don't want families at your restaurant, put a sign at the door. I had pretty low expectations for Thai Tanic given the mediocre Yelp consensus and, frankly, the name, but both the Panang Curry and especially the Pad Thai exceeded expectations. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Thai Tanic has a very casual atmosphere, and it's hours are such that it's a great post-bar spot. While that combination might make for a sub-par experience, the service really is on point. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $11.50 got me a decent portion of Panang Curry with some rice, and the same amount of dough would have gotten me a heap of pad thai, which was reasonable. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My Panang Curry was good, with a thick and flavorful curry hindered a bit by chicken that was a bit too tough. However, I spent the evening devouring my friend's medium and hot pad thai, which was genuinely excellent. It wasn't sweet like some Western iterations, and the spiciness was excellent without being overwhelming. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? I am shocked by this place having just a 3.5 star collection of reviews on yelp. Went to 2 other thai restaurants with higher avg reviews in area in past few days and by no means did they compare. The menu is expansive. No joke, 3x normal thai menu from Midwest with diverse array of appetizers, noodle dishes in particular. Featured here are many dishes not on average American thai menu. Food though was the kicker-absolutely stellar. I can be critical of thai food in reviews and have eaten in numerous thai restaurants in travels all around the United States and this place stacks up with the best. My meal here was top ten thai experiences I have had ever. Would not go as far to say it's a top ten thai restaurant that I have eaten due to only eating one time but the one time was incredible. The chicken tapioca balls to start were excellent. I had the curry rice noodles with ground chicken, diced shrimp, and veg tempura as a crunch which was the game changer. Had not had this dish in many other restaurants so jumped on the chance to eat here, and was well worth it. It's very similar to kao soi but instead of fried noodles for crunch there is tempura. Also, instead of yellow curry base this is red curry, and then instead of bone in chicken the meat is ground. These nuances led to the dish being much more enjoyable even in my opinion than kao soi. The curry was spicy but had notes of sweetness with a killer subtle tangy sourness. The meat was dispersed perfectly absorbing flavor in every square micrometer of it and the texture with creamy noodles with crunch tempura was perfect. My wife ordered pad ka pao which is done thai style with ground meat and sunny side egg. This dish was good but will mention it was more so average to slightly above avg and nowhere near the excellence of the curried noodle dish. Lastly, coconut custard for dessert was great as was not overly sweet, was served warm and had nice savory notes. Service was good as well. I frequent this place a decent amount, whether in person or takeout. I really wanted Pad Thai for dinner, so I took my boyfriend out on a date here and it was good but the restaurant definitely was overwhelmed with takeout. I completely understand you are busy with takeout but our meals took over 20ish minutes or more to come out. And the server was gone and didn't see him for a while. I think you need to prioritize in house orders over takeout. I would def rethink dining in next time because it was a long wait for the food because of the takeout backup. read more

Who turned the lights out? Not me. And how would I know? Because when I walked in here it was already dimly lit, and not in the type of way that adds to a mysterious ambience. Call it whatever, but I felt like I needed a flashlight. I only got an appetizer here as I was craving something small, and I got the "angel wings" is a fried chicken wing stuffed with all sorts of meats. Definitely worth trying. For appetizers, we ordered the golden triangles (tasty and recommended) and yum talay ($11), a collection of fresh shrimp, scallops, mussels, and squids (cooked on low heat) tossed with a spicy lime sauce and mixed vegetables (tangy mmmm). We also had a papaya salad with sun-dried shrimp, tomatoes, string beans and crushed peanuts in a spicy lime dressing. I'd get that again... For soups, there are your standard choices - tom yum vegetable/chicken/shrimp - though someone went the extra mile and got the boiling sea soup (Thai spicy broth with combo of seafood, tomatoes, and mushrooms). No idea how that was... I sampled the green curry (with chicken; $9) which had a decent amount of heat, along with eggplant in coconut milk and basil leaves. Our group shared a plate of pad thai chicken ($10) made spicy (delicious). To close for dessert, we had the mango and sticky rice and crispy banana - good, sweet times. Well, this was my first visit and I was not pleased. 1. I have NEVER been to any restaurant where the bartender is unable to fix drinks that are not on the menu. I asked the bartender if I could get an Old Fashioned with Maker's Mark bourbon whiskey and was told they didn't even have Maker's Mark. Seriously! I just ask for some red wine. 2. When our appetizers were brought out, we didn't get any small sharing plates. 3 and a half stars for this place. I met up with friends at Thai Tanic during my holiday visit in DC. One of them requested this place claiming it's his favorite Thai restaurant in town. Personally, I haven't tried this place, so I took this chance to try it out. We got there like half an hour before their siesta, so we rushed to order a bunch of stuff before the kitchen was closed. So we got the Dumplings, Papaya Salad set, Grilled Pork Shoulder, Tom Yum Gai and Duck in Sweet and Sour sauce, and a few cocktails. The plating was well-presented. The papaya salad was really good with raw blue crabs. Dumpling sauce needed to be a tad tangy. I wasn't fond of the duck tossed in some sweet and sour sauce. Oh, don't order Mint Mojito cuz it was way too citrusy. I had to add a shot of syrup to balance it out.
