This is a tight and authentic spot run by a man from Thailand past couple decades - founded back when this busy street of restaurants was more dodgy. The spicy chicken with cashews was smashing good.

Best pad Thai than even what I had in Asia. They need to bottle the sauce and sell it.

4/12/24 Day 8 in DC, 4 museums, a park and other sightseeing walks, we are exhausted! So we stayed in the hotel for delivery YUM PED YANG Roasted duck shredded and tossed with ginger, scallions, celery, cilantro, and chili paste in a spicy lime juice. THAI STAR Minced chicken and bell peppers sautéed with fresh chili sauce and accompanied by whole shrimp and Hoi Jor (shrimp, minced chicken, and herbs blended to perfection, wrapped in tofu, deep fried). This must have tasted amazing freshly served in the restaurant because the driver seemed to have gotten lost because it look longer than GrubHubs estimate of delivery, so it came just lukewarm and it's still amazingly delicious! Next time in DC we will have to go in the the restaurant.

Great local neighborhood place. Food always comes out with a spicy flavor so watch out. Great service as always from Taeng (?). She has been here almost every visit and always 5* service. This time, I had the Red Curry Chicken with extra peppers. I love extra veggies in my curry dishes. It was a little spicy but very manageable. This is a cute neighborhood place. I'd say of the 10 or so Thai places I've tried in DC, this is my favorite. Give them a try!

Stopped by for lunch, and was immediately taken care of which was nice. Ordered a thai tea, tom yum, and some curry. The tom yum had a good amount of veggies in it, but not the most flavorful. The thai tea was pretty standard. The pumpkin curry though was amazing! Good flavour and spinciness. The pumpkin was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was nice and tender.

Super authentic and delicious food! Service is below average, order's were taken wrong with dishes being delivered to wrong tables and orders. Aside from that, the food alone was a 5. Haekun $9 - totally recommend. The sweet plum sauce was a delicious pairing. Thai Lemongrass $16 - came with a bowl of rice, spice, and flavor was delectable. Will be back for this! Pad See Eew $15 - Really great flavor, with decent pieces of chicken, the egg was also surprisingly flavored and a great bite. Totally recommend this spot, what an awesome hidden gem.

It was good (3.5 stars), but would probably go somewhere else for Thai. The tomyum was great!! So clean and spicy and had great flavors. Everything else was just ok. The drunken noodles were a little soggy. The service was very slow. They were clearly overwhelmed by the number of people in the restaurant and there was only 1 (?) waitress.

I've picked up food from here a couple of times in the last few years since it's quite close to my apartment. It's always been fine in a pinch, but today I ordered pad kee Mao and it had a bunch of old and soft veggies in it. Key example if this piece of tomato that has a super soft spot on it, maybe it was turning rotten already. The bell peppers were also a little soft and the green beans were also a bit limp. Not sure how business is going, but serving food with old veggies certainly isn't going to help. The people who work there are quite nice, so it's really a shame. They should serve fresher food.

I was disappointed with this place. We were the last take out to order and a couple of things warranted 3 stars: 1) curry chicken Panang was plain -nothing on the curry just sauce and chicken. Sticky rice wasn't really sticky We ordered papaya salad, Tom yum soup, Pad See Eew. Considering the Pad See Eew & Panang was $16.00 & $15.00 per dish it wasn't worth the money. I do not recommend this place

Best local Thai restaurant! Love the drunken noodles, chicken satay, garden rolls, and desserts. Staff is so kind and attentive!

This location used to be Thai Tanic. Their name change confused me. The website says coming soon for Thai Tanic (it was there circa 2001-?) What a great time to be on 14th Street NW. On to the review: For a cold December's night, Ammathar's takeout counter was bustling. The restaurant was half full but got busier after we sat down in the window booth looking out to 14th street. A great booth if you can grab it! The staff were friendly, over worked with the consistent clientele coming in for take out orders. The place has a lot going and considering it, the food came out quickly. The menu is pretty extensive and authentic. A new dish I hadn't tried -- chicken stuffed tapioca. We started off with these as an appetizer and waited for our mains. They were interesting-- and, very chewy! The spice and flavor in the food is intense. If you don't like heat -- ask for mild. I enjoy a kick with my curry- but this certainly packed an extra punch. Overall, the meal was quick, authentic, and prepared well. The man who came in to use the bathroom and got locked in as well as the takeout line in the middle of the place kind of made things a bit strange. But, also, interesting!

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but I love Thai food in general so 4 it is. Ammathar provides a tasty, if not quite perfect, dining experience. I ordered the pad see ew and a chicken satay. The pad see ew was delicious and I would get it again. The ingredients were all in good proportion to each other and well-balanced. I would have liked a little more browning on the noodles, and the beef was chewier than expected, but it was still solid overall. The chicken satay was sliced too thickly, in my opinion, and so the lovely grilled flavor and marinade didn't get all the way through the meat. However, the peanut sauce that it came with was amazing. I saved the rest (they included quite a large container!) and drizzled it onto meal after meal the rest of the week. Ammathar feels like a reliable weeknight dinner, an enjoyable, but perhaps not craveable, restaurant.

Plus, the ambience is a mix of relaxation and class. I ordered the Lychee Martini to start, followed by the Tom Yum Fried Rice with Shrimp. It was cold, fresh, and so flavorful. Plus, it packed a punch. Although I normally eat the pork belly with fried rice, I decided to go with the Tom Yum Fried Rice with Shrimp, which did not disappoint. The freshness and spicy/sour flavors really delight the pallet. Plus, the pepper tray provides vinegar and hot sauces to supplement, if needed. The owner not only cares about the quality of the food in this restaurant, but about his customers and the community. I haven't visited for a while, and the staff still remembered my standard order. However, we wanted to order drinks first. I was able to order my cocktail, however, the waiter left before anyone else at my table could speak to order a beverage. Food came out very quickly. This is not the type of place where you would want to enjoy drinks and food over a period of time. However, if you are super hungry, your food will definitely get to you quickly. To start with the positives, everyone we interacted with was incredibly nice and pleasant. The staff was welcoming, and there was nothing negative to say about their attitude or customer service. However, the overall service was oddly slow. The restaurant wasn't crowded, yet everything seemed to take much longer than expected. For drinks, I ordered a Cosmopolitan and my girlfriend had a beer. Both were fine, but nothing particularly memorable. We ordered the crab rangoons, spring rolls, shrimp in garlic sauce, and the Tom Yum noodle bowl. The crab rangoons were fried perfectly, but there wasn't any noticeable crab in them--just hot cream cheese filling. The spring rolls were okay, though they were extremely greasy, with oil pooling on the plate. My girlfriend enjoyed the Tom Yum noodle bowl, but she wished the egg had been prepared differently. It was fully hard-boiled, whereas we were expecting a softer, more traditional preparation. Unfortunately, the shrimp in garlic sauce was the biggest disappointment. The fish sauce flavor was so overpowering that it masked everything else. I ended up feeling ill and couldn't finish the dish. Another issue was the temperature inside the restaurant. It was extremely warm, to the point that I had to step outside for some fresh air. Overall, the people were genuinely kind, and I can see why others enjoy this restaurant. While I wouldn't personally recommend it based on my experience, I also wouldn't be opposed to returning if friends wanted to go. I would simply order different menu items next time.

Corn coated in a thin layer of tempura batter, fried until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, showcasing its natural sweetness and slightly chewy texture. It was somewhat like a Chinese yumi-lao玉米烙 but more moist. The most surprising thing was that despite being entirely vegetarian food, it has the sweetness and meaty texture of fried shrimp paste. The sweet and sour sauce is similar to the Thai sweet chili sauce commonly found in China, but thinner. Served in a small cup, it looked like a cup of black tea, making it more refreshing. Grilled Pork Neck: Very different from pork neck in Chinese Thai cuisine; it's more like Cantonese char-siu叉燒. The pork neck was very well marinated and grilled to a very tender perfection, with a rich and smooth honey aroma, and a subtle wine aftertaste, but it was slightly too sweet for me. Nam Jin Jaew was primarily composed of the tangy kick of lime and the savory saltiness of fish sauce, complemented by the mild spiciness of bird's eye chili, the special fragrance of cilantro, and the sweetness of palm sugar, with a subtle hint of smokiness. It was refreshing on the whole, and incredibly layered - I fell in love with it instantly. Tom Saab Soup: It looked light, but it was surprisingly spicy and sour! The ribs were very fresh, all marbled with fat and lean meat, stewed until incredibly tender, allowing you to taste the natural aroma of the meat. The sourness was subtle, clear, and mild, with a base of lemongrass fragrance that added even more depth. My friend thoughtfully ordered it mildly spicy, but in the end, it just felt like it lacked a kick. Mango Sticky Rice: The best mango sticky rice I've ever had! The sticky rice was cooked to perfect texture and warmth, absorbing the coconut milk flawlessly - neither too watery nor too dry. The first taste was the fragrance of glutinous rice, followed by the sweetness of coconut milk, and a refreshing, slightly tart mango to cut through the richness. Thai Iced Tea: Too much condensed milk, excessively sweet. My friend said it was much sweeter than the last time she had it. Was this a change in the recipe, or did the quality control need improvement? Donsak is a district in Surat Thani, Thailand, and also the hometown of the restaurant's co-owner and manager, Boom, where she was born and raised. The restaurant's introduction states: "When she left for the US, Boom didn't know she wouldn't get to see her home again for many years - and she still hasn't. Donsak is a way around that." In fact, the restaurant has four house specialities, of which they were out of two of them. The house specials! One that was out was fish curry. They clearly have curry since other items on menu are curry. And they have seafood. Why would they not be able to mix the two? There were other items on the menu that were not available. My meal was relatively bland. I had Kad Praw with ground chicken. Other than the rice and chicken, I'm not sure there was anything else in the bowl. Almost no basil, no vegetables other than two cucumber slices as garnish. It wasn't bad, but nothing special. Oddly, the table has a table cloth but paper napkins. That seems an unusual choice for a restaurant that has relatively expensive dishes for a Thai restaurant. And my beer was served in a can with no glass. Very odd. Overall it wasn't a bad experience.
