Myh wife and I love the Italian Sesame cookies. We found Amici's online and called to find out if they had sesame cookies. I went to the store and asked to taste one of the cookies. It was. delicious, so I bought a pound. When i got home and my wife opened the box we found that all the cookies were burned. What a ripoff! Now when it comes to the cakes I would say it a four star for my taste very good but not calandra Newark ! Clean place and everything looked fresh. Left with two cannolis and a cream puff. Was very fresh but the cannoli cream was whipped. Never had a cannoli like that. It wasn't bad but just not my thing. Seen some nice reviews. hummm. We purchased our favorite, a Tiramisu cake. Worst one this family ever had in our lives. No mascarpone cheese. No chocolate coffee flavor. Mostly sugar and vanillin. Should have known from the ingredients which are listed under the "cake". More cake than sugary frosting and both bad. Oh, would not even give it to the chickens. Updating my review after a couple years. After trying their pastries again, I would say its better than I remembered. Last weekend, I tried a slice of hazelnut chocolate cake, pastry pocket with cannoli filling, and custard, chocolate mousse, and cheese danish filled tarts. They didn't taste too bad. I would probably get the custard filled tart again if at Amici's. What I like about Amici's is their nice selection of breads, cookies, cakes, cupcakes and pastries. There's something for everyone. I'm definitely coming back to try their chocolate mousse pie. Looks great and is only $5.99 regular price. read more

The best bakery in Central New Jersey. Really! I ordered a two-level quarter sheet cake for an event in my house. The cake was chocolate and vanilla with cannoli cream in the center, butter cream on top and a pictorial rendering of characters I wanted on top. The cake was ready on time, tasted wonderful, looked great and the price was reasonable. I had over 40 guests and the cake was gone in a matter of minutes after it was sliced for serving. Ok this is a tough one. I just moved to Monroe about a month ago. I lived in Port Chester, NY for 46 years. Now I'm used to two of the best Italian bakeries in the metro area. Then I lived in NC for 2 years, fahgetaboutit! Now I'm back in civilization. I did a search for a bakery in the area and come up with Amici's. The bakery is 7 miles from my home. Not really far but not around the corner. I arrived 10AM Sunday morning. I expected the place to be larger, it was small. My first impression wasn't that great. There were two young women behind the counter. One was helping a customer the other very slow to approach me. She walked over, after a big yawn in my face she asked what I wanted. I wanted some hard rolls, none in NC. They were sold out. This was 10AM and out? I bought an Italian bread instead. It was excellent, fresh and crispy. I then bought 6 mini cannoli's. They to were very good but I think $1.75 is a big high for 1-1/2 bites. But that's me. I'm going back. Gonna call before I go to reserve my hard roll craving. Bottom line the product was very good. I can over think it and be a pain in the butt. BTW if you want a good bagel, there's a bagel shop right next door. read more

Disappointing quality. We purchased a mix of small cakes and pastries. Everything tasted like they were made in a factory. They advertise baking on premise, but with the size of the place there's no way they can produce the amount of items displayed. And while the suburban strip mall is low on charm (as compared to traditional pastry shops in the old Italian neighborhoods) Amici helps anchor it's Italian-ness. There is a bakery in North Jersey. A wildly popular one that has a long heritage and has even been seen on TV. We've been to that bakery (as well as the other store further south). They offer delicious items. For a long time, it was the only bakery we went to. Today, that all changed. After a round of disc golf at nearby Thompson Park, we stopped by Amici. We always get into trouble going into places like this. We go in with the thought of "just a couple of small items each." It never works. Today, we intended to buy a couple of small cannolis, and maybe a lobster tail. We left with two small cannolis, two lobster tails, two apple turnovers, two danishes, and a chocolate cigar. The first thing we noticed was the total cost, which was a pleasant surprise (especially when compared to the other bakery). We had the cannolis first. The shell was perfectly done, and the filling was almost buttery smooth. After getting home, we split the chocolate cigar. I had never heard of one, but this pastry was absolutely delicious! I wanted more, but I had to share with my wife (boo! LOL). After dinner, we had the lobster tails. The filling was super light, and the pastry was very flaky and cooked to perfection. Tomorrow for breakfast, we'll have the turnovers and danishes. That other bakery, as good as they are, do not reach the standard we found here at Amici. The store was clean, and smelled like a bakery, of course. It seemed as if there was only one employee working (but it wasn't very busy, so that is fitting). As soon as we walked in, she smiled warmly and welcomed us. She was very patient as we made our selections, and eagerly answered questions as they came up. I really can't think of anything negative to say. There was a fly in the store, but there are flies everywhere, so if that turns you off to a food place, you'll likely be hungry. We will go back. It's about an hour from home, but I make regular trips to the disc golf course at Thompson, and it's only 10 minutes from there, so it won't be out of the way. If you are looking for a superb bakery that is reasonably prices, Amici will fit the bill! read more

My wife and I are from Virginia and were in town last week to stay with my sister and her husband and attend our nieces wedding. Early the first morning we were here, I found Amici's online, came in and bought several boxes of pastries since we had about 15 people back at the house. All the pastries looked wonderful so it was hard to choose. While our family ate a full breakfast that morning, everyone still found room to eat the pastries. They were so good and so fresh, my brother went back the next morning and bought 3 more boxes for the group. I've been to my share of bakeries over time. I'd rank Amici's at the top of my list, at least for pastries. As we were leaving on day 3 to go back to Virginia, my wife and I had to stop here again for more pastries to take home. Good thing we don't live here or we'd find ourselves at Amici's every week. This bakery is one of the best bakeries I have ever been too. My niece was turning one year old and I was in desperate need of an ice cream themed cake. I called them on Wednesday for a cake that needed to be picked up on Saturday and they were more than accommodating. They made the perfect cake and the best part was I called two hours before my pickup and asked them to make a matching smash cake for my niece and it came out perfect. They were so happy to do it and when we went to pick it up they didn't even charge us for the smash cake. The cake was moist and the chocolate buttercream was perfect. I usually don't like whipped-cream icings. I usually prefer buttercream. But Amici's icings have lovely flavors - strawberry, rum, a light chocolate - that other whipped-cream icings never seem to have. They make most of their individual desserts in a small and a large size, although each size isn't always available at the times I've been in. But the variation is great if you just want a small taste. The prices are amazing. I've gotten five pastries for under 10 bucks. It's been a while since I've been - it's about a half-hour from where I used to live - but I seem to remember a glazed-fresh-blueberry and chocolate tiny cake slice, a strawberry-topped cake slice, wonderful mini cannoli and a cheese-cake in cupcake size - more of a cake with a high percentage of cheese in it, rather than a full-on cheesecake. Having had this bakery referred to us by friends, we thought it would be the perfect place to order my sister's 75th Birthday cake. MAN WERE WE EVER WRONG!! i ordered a whipped cream cake, with chocolate covered strawberries on top and along the base. I made sure to tell them that I did NOT WANT strawberry filling between the layers, as nobody ever uses real strawberries for that. Instead, they always use some kind of strawberry jam or jelly, which is way too sweet. I did want chocolate mousse, but only if it wasn't very sweet. I was assured by the owner that their mousse isn't sweet and would be perfect. AGAIN, ABSOLUTELY WRONG, AND THEY USED THE STRAWBERRY JAM BETWEEN THE LAYERS! We picked up the cake and took it to the restaurant, where the staff was to bring it to the table after dinner. We sang happy birthday, and cut the cake, only to find everything that I DID NOT WANT, inside the cake. Sickeningly sweet mousse and even worse strawberry jam! We each took one taste of the cake, then gave it to the restaurant to throw away. NEVER AGAIN! FROM NOW ON I'LL STICK WITH MENDOKERS! read more
