I LOVE the food here! The sushi rolls are great, but if that isn't your thing the sweet and spicey chicken is awesome. My all time favorite thing to order though is the super bowl. It is an appetizer, but filling enough to be an entre! It is the best rice around, topped with REAL not imitation spicy crab and other things. But mostly crab!!! I get it every time I go there! And it is amazing because it is under 7 dollars. So if you're A crab lover, but find it hard to get enough crab for the crazy prices charged. Check out this place! And definitely try the super bowl. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet, as it's my favorite restaurant in Bloomington. We've been at least 30 times, both on date nights and with our kids. Every single time has been great- ambience, food and service. They have Japanese and Korean food, and since it's close to the university, the prices are reasonable/cheaper than anywhere else in town. I usually get a fancy roll ($12-20), or the all you can eat sushi ($20 or $25 depending on how much variation you'd like). The rolls are killer, and the sushi is always super fresh. I've tried most if not all of their sashimi by now, and it's always really fresh and yummy. My girlfriend usually gets Korean- she likes their sweet and sour chicken, and the Galbi. The kids love the dumplings and fried rice. On the weekends, they have deals on sake and beers- 30% off I think.. but alcohol is never very expensive. This is an all around solid restaurant with a great vibe- I highly recommend it! read more

Ami is one of my go to places in Bloomington for solid, reasonably-priced Asian food with relaxed ambiance. The light on the main level makes for a great atmosphere, but I would avoid the basement if you can help it which usually amounts to arriving before 7:30pm on a Friday during the school year. Outdoor patio seating is a great summer option. I prefer to stick to the entrees, not being a fan of sushi myself, and have enjoyed so-so to very good food. Entrees (and sushi) come with a salad and miso soup, which is absolutely delicious. It's soup, it's simple, but there's something about it that wows me every time I take that first sip. Usually I order the gyoza as an appetizer (8 pieces, citrus dipping sauce, and grape/orange garnishes) which is very good. The outside of the gyoza used to be on the greasy side but that is no longer an issue. The entrees I've tried have generally been good but quality has varied from visit to visit. The tori katsu (two chicken cutlets, katsu sauce, cabbage with drizzled sauce, pickled peppers?, and rice at dinner) is a dish I've ordered maybe 5-8 times and while most of the time the chicken is incredibly tender and breading perfectly crisp, I have had overcooked pieces and soggy breading. I'm not a fan of the katsu sauce but suspect that this is personal preference rather than a fault with the restaurant. Overall the portion size is very generous for $12 and food generally good. On my most recently visit I ordered the regular size sweet and spicy fried chicken which was very tasty and a surprisingly large portion for $8. As advertised, the spiciness of the sauce was very mild but provided a compelling balance to the almost candied sweetness. The meat was quality chicken breast, perfectly coated and fried for a delicious crunch. I definitely recommend it if you're craving something simple but well-executed. Parking in the small lot behind the restaurant can be a headache especially if you drive a larger vehicle. If you can find a spot that is. During the summer it's managable, but throughout the school year I prefer to park on a side street and walk. 09/01/17 update: Ordered the bulgogi deop-bap/gyu don with the menu descriprion "pan-grilled bulgogi beef, noodles, and vegetables." The server informed me that the noodles are cellophone noodles which, after tasting them, I believe are shirataki not dangmyeon. Kind of a strange gelatinous taste in my opinion. The order came with a good amount of beef, carrots, scallions, mushrooms, onions and cabbage as well as a sprinkle of dried seaweed. Sushi in southern Indiana.... I was somewhat apprehensive about eating here. After living in San Diego for the past 5 years I've become accustomed to fresh sushi at every street corner. During our holiday visit my fiancee and I were craving it and decided to give this place a try. Everything that we tried was actually pretty good. The prices were somewhat higher than what we usually pay, but then the fish traveled a thousand more miles than what we usually eat. Ordered: Crunchy Tuna Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Dragon Roll, Rainbow Roll, Spicy Crazys Ambiance: Not your classy japanese decor with rosewood, bamboo, and minimalist black paint. It's a college-town restaurant with a casual atmosphere. Have to admit the fancy-ish wine rack on the wall seems a little out of place though. Service was fairly decent requiring only a little flagging down to get someone who the people were friendly enough. Food: Miso soup was fair, I like mine with less green onion and more seaweed/tofu. The salad had your standard carrot-ginger dressing which had separated in my bowl but tasted just fine once I tossed it in the bowl. By far the best and most recommended roll was the crunchy tuna roll which was essentially a spicy tuna roll with crab and tamago (egg omelet) topped with fried vermicelli and eel sauce. It was very savory combination although you do lose the spicy tuna a bit in all the other strong flavors. The spicy tuna roll, rainbow, and dragon roll were fairly routine, nothing to rave or complain about. The 'spicy crazys' is one of those [americanized] super-rolls you have to take 2 big bites to eat. It has crab, cucumber and avocado with multiple chunks of various fish in each bite. Though not authentic by any means, it was admittedly pretty good. It was fun to try to identify each piece of fish by taste and texture within each bite and the siracha-sauce never hurts. I must warn, however, the california roll in my friend's bento box was absolutely horrible with chewy seaweed, stale rice, and a overall spoiled flavor. I don't know why hers in particular were that way but the rest of the rolls were fine. Overall: I'd give this place 3.5 stars, it's not the most authentic place but the ingredients including fish and [imitation] crab were decent, not the freshest but far from the worst. All the standard rolls were standard but they had some that stood out such as the crunchy tuna roll and spicy crazys. Considering the area/state, I give Ami the better rating but I have certainly had better in other towns. I also didn't pay for the meal (yay in-laws) so I can't really comment on the value of this place. read more

I've eaten at Restaurant Ami (previously Domo) seven or so times over the past six years -- and I've been impressed every time. Just had the sashimi over rice and greens last night. The chili sauce was AMAZING. In the past I've ordered various sushi and tempura; always been happy. Sake is also good. Prices are a little high compared to Sushi Bar -- but the food and service are superior in my opinion. It's also better than Japanee, because the restaurant is actually kept at a normal room temperature (Japanee = Antarctica). read more

I'm not a huge sushi fan, but I love hibachi of all kinds. The basics (steak, chicken, shrimp) are all great at Domo but also recommend the swordfish. Great portion size and it comes with salad, soup, noodles, veggies, rice. Not cheap really, but the price:food ratio is great. I eat at Domo at least every week or so. I'd come back but I'm not sure I can afford to on any regular basis. I did get one of their meals which came with a ridiculous amount of food--but it's not the quick, inexpensive lunch option I'd hope for as a JSoM student. The majority of their rolls are originally over priced at $12 - $16 so you end up paying the same as you would at any other sushi place in town. To break it down, Ami just doesn't stand up to the other sushi establishments. The fish may be fresh but most of their rolls lack in flavor. I've tried this place three times, and it was progressively worse each time. Some of the highlights... - They served me a FROZEN avocado! - Most of the sushi was inedible. The ahi was like biting into cowhide and tasted very fishy. I had to spit it into my napkin - We ordered a roll that they light on fire. The server spilled some of the alcohol on the table before she lit it and ended up setting her hand on fire. I guess that should earn a pity point, but it was unsettling. - The only highlight of the bibimbap was the fried egg. The tofu was a failure in both taste and texture. Bloomington's best pick for sushi- this place is packed with IU students for lunch and dinner whenever school is in session. Service is almost always polite and efficient. I enjoy eating outside with my family when possible as the inside is a bit cramped and tables are close together. The sushi is always fresh, there are great options of vegans (great tofu appetizer) and the udon is delicious too. Japanese beer is available as is a very limited wine selection. My family ordered gyoza as an appetizer and I ordered udon for my entree. It was delicious! The gyoza was perfect and I cannot imagine a better way to start a meal. I liked the udon a lot. I was suprised by the size of the bowl. It was massive but I ate all of the noodles. Unfortunately I did not like the broth. This may be due to me being a picky eater but if I go again (which I hope to) I will order the soba noodles. I would reccomend this restaurant. read more

The closest thing I can come to as a drawback is how heavy handed the menu was, catering to the college crowd: OMG rolls, lots of extra spicy sauces, deep fried rolls. Even a football shaped thingy? Our only conversational competition was a couple of knuckleheads doing Sake Bombs. But for food THAT good? I would have shared the place with a daycare center. Once upon a Tuesday, I walked out of Ballantine at 5:30 sharp and decided that I was craving some sushi. I'd been to Ami once before this, but WOW was this an experience. After my long trek up 3rd, I sauntered into the restaurant ready to get food and get out...BOY was I in for a treat. I snagged myself a "007" and lobster roll at an excellent 30% discount(Tuesday's for discounted sashimi and chef rolls)!! I scarfed my soup and salad, which were delivered promptly and prepared ever so deliciously. As I peered up from my last bite of salad, I was immediately gifted with the main show! The 007 had the delicacy of a Russian gymnast with the swagger of James Bond to match. In simpletons terms, it was very delicious and definitely a great introduction to sushi if you're new to the sushi world! Next, the lobster roll hit me with something REAL smooth as I sunk into some scrumptious lobster...only to then be kicked back by a perfect balance of jalapeño to let my spicy side show! It was like watching Jackie Chan and Frank Sinatra play tetherball at your local elementary school. BEAUTIFUL! If you're looking for some controlled heat, the lobster roll is the way to go! Free Miso & Salad, nice. Soup was hot, salad dressing a tad garlicky, but still quite good. Tempura appetizer came out fast, smokin hot, and was very good. I opted for the Katsu curry, rather than my usual favorite Katsu Don. Probably next time I will try out some Udon. To say I'm down for Korean food at the drop of a hat is not an understatement.
