My family ordered gyoza as an appetizer and I ordered udon for my entree. It was delicious! The gyoza was perfect and I cannot imagine a better way to start a meal. I liked the udon a lot. I was suprised by the size of the bowl. It was massive but I ate all of the noodles. Unfortunately I did not like the broth. This may be due to me being a picky eater but if I go again (which I hope to) I will order the soba noodles. I would reccomend this restaurant. read more

Once upon a Tuesday, I walked out of Ballantine at 5:30 sharp and decided that I was craving some sushi. I'd been to Ami once before this, but WOW was this an experience. After my long trek up 3rd, I sauntered into the restaurant ready to get food and get out...BOY was I in for a treat. I snagged myself a "007" and lobster roll at an excellent 30% discount(Tuesday's for discounted sashimi and chef rolls)!! I scarfed my soup and salad, which were delivered promptly and prepared ever so deliciously. As I peered up from my last bite of salad, I was immediately gifted with the main show! The 007 had the delicacy of a Russian gymnast with the swagger of James Bond to match. In simpletons terms, it was very delicious and definitely a great introduction to sushi if you're new to the sushi world! Next, the lobster roll hit me with something REAL smooth as I sunk into some scrumptious lobster...only to then be kicked back by a perfect balance of jalapeño to let my spicy side show! It was like watching Jackie Chan and Frank Sinatra play tetherball at your local elementary school. BEAUTIFUL! If you're looking for some controlled heat, the lobster roll is the way to go! I've been here twice, unfortunately, and experienced both abysmal service and food both times. Knowing that this is the midwest and expecting fresh fish is really out of the question at this point, but does everything have to be covered in mayo and fried? I was too skeptical to attempt the nigiri and sashimi that was offered, so I stuck with the rolls. Suffice it to say I was sick after the first visit and couldn't finish my meal on the second. I have been going to Ami for more than 10 years and their food and service has always been great

Ok I went back for a lunch date with a friend. We both ordered a stir fried noodle dish, something like yaki soba. When our food came out, they gave us something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT without asking our permission or telling that what we ordered was not available. This was highly inconsiderate and inappropriate. As a vegetarian, naturally I would order a dish without meat/chicken/seafood, etc. However they gave me a dish with all the above! Also the dish that they gave us was more expensive than what we originally ordered. So that's my latest experience at Ami's. Again I used to love this place and its sad to experience this recently on multiple occasions. Which is why I have to give it one star. Here's what happened last time: I normally love going to Ami. But today they had nothing I wanted to order on the menu. And my table was told that they weren't serving salads as their freezer broke. The food we ended up ordering was decent but Ami should either really invest in updating their menu or stock up on supplies more so. As far as Bloomington sushi spots go, especially around the Indiana University campus, Ami is the best that I have tried so far. Much like some other restaurants in Bloomington, Ami's exterior is nothing to admire, but once you enter the building it actually turns out to be a nice place. The decor is nice and adds to the atmosphere, and doesn't stray away from the fact that sushi is a Japanese food (I have seen some quite poorly decorated places before, even having Chinese decor in a sushi restaurant). The staff is friendly and respectful, and it took no time at all during lunch hours for me to be seated once I entered the restaurant. The staff came by frequently to refill my drink and to check if I needed anything else. The menu sticks primarily to sushi but they have other entrées and noodle bowl type items as well. Their sushi menu is extensive, there is definitely a roll for everyone on their menu. I have tried most of their rolls myself and have enjoyed eating all of them, including simple rolls like the cucumber roll. I have not tried other entrées beside sushi. The specialty sushi rolls come with soup and salad, which for me is a must while I wait for the main course. Ami is more expensive than other places in Bloomington for the most part such as Sushibar and Kiku sushi, but in my opinion you get what you pay for and Ami is higher quality than than these other places. I'm a frequent sushi eater, and I never get the same rolls over and over again. I've been to Japonee, Sushi Haru (which I don't believe is here anymore), that one Sushi place next to the old costume store, almost everywhere. That's why I chose to go to Ami. I've heard good things, and never pass down sushi, so when I got the invitation to go I didn't hesitate to accept. Ami has plenty of sushi rolls to choose from and the best part is that the Special Rolls (Chef's Special Rolls) are 30% off on Tuesdays! Naturally, being the broke college student that I am, I mentioned that we should go on a Tuesday to get that deal and save some money. We had a larger group of about 5 and my friends were still waiting for a table by the time I got there (30 minutes after the planned time). I was slightly worried we wouldn't make it out before their closing time, which is 10pm. I'm really big on leaving a restaurant before it closes. It's just rude to inconvenience people. We were sat at a table in the basement and were immediately greeted by our server. Although he was waiting on 4 other tables, he still managed to make our experience personal. He was funny, charming, and always knew when we needed something. One of my favorite things from the night was when I mentioned needing a few more minutes to decide my order and he jokingly said, "You have 20 seconds." It made me relax because I could see he was busy and I didn't want to make him wait longer than necessary. When the food came out, I was drooling. Of course, my phone was dead so I wasn't able to take a few pictures for Instagram, but the mental image is still there. I had ordered 3 rolls because I couldn't decide: Ultimate Shrimp, Spicy Salmon, and Salmon Avalanche. I've had plenty of Spicy Salmon rolls (they're my favorite) but I've never had a roll with cream cheese in it. I decided to change that. The Salmon Avalanche had everything I loved, and one thing I was unsure about (cream cheese). My final verdict? DELICIOUS. It was just the right amount of cream cheese that made me contemplate ordering another one. Yes, that would have been 4 sushi rolls. Please don't judge me. They forgot the spicy sauce on my Spicy Salmon roll, making it just a plain Salmon Roll, but it was delicious, and I didn't have room for complaints. The Ultimate Shrimp Roll was equally as delicious. Each piece was topped with shrimp and multiple sauces. It's a very dense roll, and I wouldn't recommend getting three sushi rolls like I did, if you don't want to overeat. I would go back in a heartbeat. If I had the same server of course. He was great! Everything was quick, our food came out perfect, and even with a group of people, we were in and out in less than 2 hours. Job well done! read more

My gyoza were super mushy and honestly when ordering with them its been like this every time. This one is a hidden gem in Bloomington! We love sushi and were in search of a good place that serves it, when a friend recommended Ami's. They serve THE BEST SUSHI, at least in Indiana. Its a small, cozy place with good service and great variety of sushi. I haven't tried anything other than sushi from their menu. Seriously, Ami has spoilt me for sushi. We went back recently on a Monday and could not resist visiting Domo/Ami again. This time we tried the Monday special, 50% off sashimi rice. We also wanted to try a different chef's special since Mountain was so good. It was bittersweet our second time around. The hamachi nigiri was again very tasty and the service was great, we had the same Japanese waiter again. The sashimi rice was also very good. It was well worth the $6 and is a great fresh and light meal. It is comprised of a bed of vegetables, carrot shreds, cubes of random sashimi, masago roe, and nori strips. It comes with a bowl of rice and a squeeze bottle of bibimbap sauce that you mix together. The lettuce comes already coated in a light sesame seed oil dressing that we really loved. Personally, we felt that the meal tasted better without the bibimbap sauce due to the strong flavor of the sauce. The Spicy Scallop Roll was a good beginners roll. There wasn't anything raw or "scary." K didn't really like it because it was very similar to a California Roll but J didn't mind. read more

MY wife and I have been to all the sushi places in town, and this is probably the best of them. Not all the rolls are great --- you have to come a few times to know what to get and what to avoid, but once you figure that out, there are some really tasty selections. Hands down the best sushi place for a broke college student. All rolls come with soup and salad so you can get a lot of bang for your buck! As for taste it's mediocre...the only thing that saved it was the eel sauce which you really can't mess that up. The rice to fish ratio is off, way too much rice for not nearly enough fish. Also the seaweed is so chewy! Bottom line if you want ok sushi for a lot of money this is the place to go. However if you're a real sushi lover this is NOT the place for you. Based on previous reviews, we were expecting a pretty nice meal. Unfortunately, our experience was not great. Starting out, the miso soup was not good. I cannot think of the overpowering flavor, but the soup was off. We tried a roll, and two different combination boxes. The California roll was OK. A little too much rice for my liking. The Shumai was not flavorful. The dipping sauce was good, however. The chicken teriyaki was excellent, although the ratio of mushrooms to chicken was about 10 to 1. The kalbi beef was inedible. There was a strong, unpleasant, flavor and odor associated with this dish. Garlic maybe. I do not believe the cooks tried this dish before serving it. At least I hope they didn't. Salad with the combinations was lettuce with a very weak dressing. Uninspired. Service was good, and prices were ok. The quality and flavors of too many items were lacking. read more

Have been to Ami several times, tried a variety of food there, and have always been pleased with the items I've ordered (the people I've gone with have always enjoyed their food too). They also offer some pretty nice weekly specials! Overall, it's worth visiting - I have genuinely enjoyed the food I've had there and the servers have always been nice. With parking - depending on where you're headed there from consider taking the bus, biking, or walking (they're in an excellent location for all of these options)! They do offer a parking lot for customers but it is very small. There are some nearby streets you could park along and walk though! One specific experience is ultimately why I'm landing on around a 3/3.5 stars instead of a 4. (Will gladly update once I visit again and have a positive experience!) On one of our visits they seated us downstairs and most of the room was a large event that reserved multiple tables - the group was playing music pretty loudly and I couldn't really converse with anyone at my table which was unfortunate. (It was also a little awkward since we weren't part of the event going on but were in the space.) Oh well, we managed with the noise and still enjoyed all of our tasty food! :) read more

If this place was on the east or west coast, I would give it 3 stars but since it's located in the Midwest and the food has to travel a distance, I'll be nicer. Ami can get very busy, especially on Tuesdays (30% off rolls!!!!) The sushi falls somewhere between mediocre and average but there are alot of interesting rolls that make up for the quality of sushi. Honestly, not that bad of a place food wise and they have a variety of Korean food that you can try out if you're not feeling sushi as well. I ordered chashu ramen for my 3 year old daughter. It came with jalapeños in it. So I asked the server why the menu doesn't state that chashu ramen is spicy, yes, they put jalapeños in the Japanese style ramen ?????? What the server answered was, oh that's how we made it. It's always spicy. Fine, I said why doesn't it state on the menu that it's spicy, so I wouldn't order it for my daughter. She said what do you want me to do with a dirty look. She looked at me like it's my fault for not knowing that their Japanese style ramen is different than others. She's so rude and gives me bad attitude. Please update ur menu, so ppl know it's spicy.
