Gayle and I recently visited Bloomington to visit family, especially the 2 darling grand girls. Her Son and his wife had pretty much kept the family at home for several months, and when we offered to buy them dinner one night, takeout was really the only option. There might be better Chinese places within greater Bloomington, but sometimes location convenience (this place was minutes way) is the key restaurant choice factor. There is also one interesting quirk with Dragon Chinese Restaurant in that they don't accept credit cards in person, but did when we ordered over the phone. We ordered a wide variety of dishes, including my favorite (Kung Pao Chicken), plus egg and spring roles. Everyone got what they wanted, with sharing encouraged. My son, his girlfriend, and my wife all thought the food was good. I thought it was just blah. Maybe it was me, but everything seemed a little bit bland or different from what I have expected the food to taste like. And this could have been my wife's fault for not checking or picking something up when she was there, but there was no soy sauce or chinese mustard put into the bag. First time at Dragon this evening. Have been looking for Americanized Chinese food ever since moving to Bloomington. Have tried several restaurants and for the most part they have been good, but too authentic for our taste. For example, none of the restaurants we have tried so far have pot stickers on the menu. We finally found them at Dragon! (where they are called "fried dumplings") First impression: Easy to get to the restaurant thanks to the traffic light off 3rd into the Kmart parking lot. The interior of the restaurant is clean. You can see into the kitchen while ordering at it looked clean as well. The young man at the counter was friendly. We ordered carry out from the extensive menu. Hot and Sour soup, chicken in garlic sauce, spicy green beans and fried dumplings (pot stickers). We also ordered a large rice, not realizing that each of our dishes came with a small side of rice. Got our order home, they had included two fortune cookies and some crispy noodles. (fried wonton skins) The pot stickers were good, not the greatest we have ever had but the FIRST we have had since moving to Bloomington in 2016. Would definitely order again, but would add some chile oil to the dipping sauce. The chicken in garlic sauce was good. Chicken was fresh and it was white meat, no weird looking pieces. Vegetables were fresh and well cooked, not over cooked. Sauce was a bit too sweet, but still tasty. My partner enjoyed the hot and sour soup and the green beans, although the sauce on the beans was a tad too sweet also. Be aware, we ordered small entrees and they were HUGE. One small entree could definitely feed two , maybe even three people. We will definitely be back, the menu is huge so we will be trying other dishes. I'm not sure why some people have claimed this to be the best Chinese place in Bloomington. I definitely have several other picks that rank above this one, because my experience here was so-so. The crab rangoon was delicious, but at the same time, the egg foo young and pork lo mein were pretty bad. The sweet and sour chicken was highly over cooked as well. Everything was all salt and no flavor. Also, at the time of ordering, we weren't told they only accepted cash at the restaurant - so that created an inconvenience for us to figure out how to pay and had to end up reordering the same things online using a credit card. They didn't apologize, just gave us a dirty look and removed the food from the counter until the online payment went through. Lol. I think takeout is supposed to be easier and more pleasant than this, especially since the food wasn't worth it. read more

Decent American Chinese food. Beware of the breaded chicken items as the chicken is often overcooked and hard like it's been sitting a while. Portions used to be enormous and have been scaled back to a more average size while prices have increased but not outside the realm of cheap Chinese food. Don't go expecting anything authentic, as this is not the place for that. We usually get 3 or 4 entrees and a couple things of fried rice and share. My priorities when eating out are: good food, heaping portions, at a rock bottom price. Dragon Chinese delivers on all three. My wife and I split a lunch order of Beef Lo Mein. It was tasty and the large portion size meant we almost had leftovers. Price was a very reasonable $5.70. I have also eaten at the Lucky Express in downtown Bloomington for their $5 lunch special and while the location of that establishment is better (near campus instead of next to K-Mart) I prefer the food at Dragon. Dragon is one of those engimas. It's a crappy, hole in the wall, strip mall Chinese restaurant, that doesn't accept credit card, and only takes cash. There's numerous deterrents for not going in there, and yet, the place is always busy. What separate'a Dragon from the other Chinese restaurants in Bloomington is their excellent Americanized Chinese food. Dragon doesn't try to differentiate self, try something new, or cater to eastern students. Dragon is great if you're looking for some inexpensive greasy Chinese take-out. If you're looking for anything better quality, though, there are far better places to visit. If you go on a higher volume day at a higher volume time (i.e. Friday or Saturday after 7pm or Monday - Friday at lunch) you're more likely to have your food made fresh and, therefore, get a better quality meal. Dragon had some of the most bland Chinese food I've ever had. My husband and I had the Orange Chicken, Lemon Chicken, and Crab Rangoons. The only good food we had was the Orange Chicken--it tasted like what you would expect American Chinese food to taste like. The Lemon Chicken was very bland and I ended up adding soy sauce to it, which I never do with Chinese food as it is usually already salty. Instead of it being paired with broccoli or some other steamed vegetable, it sat on a bed of iceberg lettuce. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than lukewarm lettuce with a hot entree. The Crab Rangoons were the worst that I have ever had. There was hardly any filling and the filling that was there was primarily cream cheese. I couldn't taste any crab flavor. Finally, some inconveniences--Dragon only accepts cash and local checks and the online menu does not reflect the updated prices. Add at least $1 to each item you see on the online menu and that is the correct price. Overall, I've had better Chinese food in Bloomington. The fact that Dragon is charging the same (or more) as other establishments blows me away. I would recommend going elsewhere for Chinese food in Bloomington. read more

Dargon and Dargon Express have been my go-to Chinese restaurants for food since coming to IU-B for college. My recommendations that I think anybody would appreciate (assuming you're not a veggie lovers pizza person) are: fried dumplings (aka pot stickers), sesame chicken (if you like sweet with no spice) or General Tso's chicken (if you like spicier), and chicken & broccoli. Other items that I repeat eat are: Egg Foo Young, chicken chow mein (which is actually fried noodles if you translated it literally in Mandarin), sweet & sour chicken, and crab meat Rangoon. Paying $12 for a quart of Chicken and Broccoli is a joke, especially when I can go across the street to the Chinese Buffet and get the same thing in a to go box for less than $9 and fill it just as full plus get a drink included. This used to be a good restaurant but something has changed, not for the better. I've bought their sub gum wonton soup for years, i've now gotten two orders where all the wontons have turned to mush. The steamed dumplings, which are usually very good, were frozen grocery store dumplings and tasteless. Also the shrimp in the fried rice were rotten, spitting out rotten. Like all fast food, I think it's the most delicious bite I have ever tasted and start to eat it really quickly. The fried rice was really fluffy and soft, but I'm not sure if those little glowing red and dull brown cubes were pork because it tasted enflamed and incandescent. The sauce was tangy, but became too sharp in that it overdressed the vegetables and the rice. By the end of the meal, they were swimming in a soup of sauce. Maybe it just did not agree with me, but it seems to be a favorite because nearly all the tables were full and the prices are cheap. read more

I'm usually not a fan of Chinese food from strip malls. Dragon changed my mind. Hotel desk recommended Dragon. It is pretty much a take-out place. There are a few very bare bones tables. It is cash only which stumped the guy picking up an order in front of me. Ordered the General Tso. For less than $7 it included a bunch of chicken, pork fried rice and an eggroll. Chicken was moist with great sauce. The thick sauce, not the watery type. Rice was a little drier than I normally prefer but when mixed with a little of the Tso sauce, it was divine. Pork pieces were a decent size and nicely cooked. Eggroll was a golden color, not greasy at all and had great veg. read more
