My family ordered food for pickup on Christmas Day, and we would not order here again. It was easily the worst Chinese food we have ever had. The entrees were mostly inedible, the chicken had a slimy consistency that made one person in our family gag. I didn't believe them until I tried it myself, almost as if the chicken had been reheated in sauce without frying first. The Mongolian beef had 4 tiny slices of beef, we laughed looking at the entire onion used to replace the meat. Our rangoons had zero filling, not even lack of seafood but almost like they had exploded in the fryer. If it had been any other day, we would have asked for a refund, but it was Christmas Day and we are traveling without the time/ energy to fix this. It was so bad that we ordered pizza and tossed more than half of the food. The hot and sour soup was outstanding, spicy and full of crunchy veggies and tofu. Every other item in our order was inedible. My three stars reflect the excellent service I received while placing and picking up the order, the soup was also very good. We went for lunch on a work day and were the only ones the entire time. Homely inside. The menu could use some work, greasy and very looong. I originally ordered the General Tso chicken off the lunch menu but immediately noticed that it tasted "off" - way too sour to be flavorful. The waiter allowed us to select a different item on the menu - Mongolian chicken (much better). He later informed us that the chef previously forgot the sugar! Authentic Chinese food restaurant. This is one of 2 larger Chinese restaurants in Bloomingtoon. We decided to have chinese food for lunch but wanted to try something new and we found this. It was empty when we arrived. The restaurant is not big but seems clean. The menu is quite comprehensive with choices or meat and veggies diishes. It serves non sipcy and also sichuan dishes. We ordered Dry hotpot, fish with sour veggie doup, pork with garlic sauce, and pork belly with garlic. It is interesting that they ran out of many veggie for the dry hotpot. The food was ready quickly, and they were yummy except the pork belly. The best was the fish soup. The dry hotpot was good, but it is similar to what we had at other malatang restaurants. After reading reviews and looking at photos online, I was a little shocked when we walked into this restaurant. It definitely seemed like it was going to be nicer than it was. The dining room needs updated and cleaned. However, our service was excellent and I loved the Black Pepper chicken. My husband didn't care for the heavily sauced chicken and said it tasted like it was a freezer entree. Which was weird because mine seemed so fresh. Hubby and I had the opportunity to try Red Chinese last night. We ate at the restaurant since we were staying nearby - although the dining room needs to be updated - the food is spot on. The appetizers of crab rangoon and pork eggs rolls arrived quick, hot and had unbelievable flavor. Main courses of cashew chicken and beef lo mein were amazing as well. as a 99 year old crippled gramma, i love this awesome place! the food is gooood and i eat it to feed my addiction of spicy food. i go here everyday, and the service was wonderful to me. the owner's child is a very friendly indidual, and is very amusing. he resembles a baby hippo, very cute. this place is keeping me going, after my many recent surgeries, and getting hit by a car. this place beats mcdonalds anyday. come here and get served food that will knock you off your wheelchair!! only bad thing is that owner will not let me park my wheelchair in the parking lot. all around awesome place. i don't understand why people put bad reviews. these young whippersnappers need to be taught a lesson. also please tell me how to put caps lock off. read more

Had not been to Red in several months. Dropped by tonight for dinner. Spring Break at IU and Red was dead. It was just us plus the staff of four. One lady was asleep at a table with headphones on. Another guy was asleep at another table. Weird ambiance. They have new menus since the last time we were there. They have photos of the food and some of the pages were sort of stuck together. Not a good impression. We ordered American Chinese food. Kung Pao chicken. General Tso's chicken and hot and sour soup. Huge portions, but if if doesn't taste good, size does not matter. The soup was hot but in no way was it sour. It was actually sort of bland. The Kung Pao was nothing special. The General Tso's was the best dish on the table. Very good authentic Chinese food. Had dinner with my parents at Red a while ago. It's a little more upscale than your typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese place, with prices to reflect that, but I thought it was worth it...the portion sizes are massive! The eggplant in garlic sauce was very flavorful and well-textured, and enough for two meals to boot. Probably the second best I have had. My dad also enjoyed his spicy fish soup, which came in a MASSIVE bowl. Although more basic than the authentic Chinese options, my mom's orange chicken was pretty tasty too. We got takeout here for the first time last night. The scallion pancakes had a few flecks of scallion and were sodden with oil. The spicy ribs were so dry and had so little meat they were basically inedible. Kung Pao Chicken was bland with hard chunks of chicken, and the garlic eggplant, while well-spiced, had been cooked to the point of mush. We picked at it, and the leftovers went into the garbage. Everything tasted and looked as though it had been sitting around for a while, reheated, or just plain "old," and we both felt queasy after eating. Upon picking up the order, hubs noticed that the dining room was nearly empty and didn't look very clean. I would give this place no stars. read more

Nothing felt authentic and appears to be mass produced with not much love put into it. Price was comparable to other restaurants. The final issue is that we were asked to move to another table to make room for another party. I felt this was tacky but understood because the restaurant is pretty small. However it didn't land well with me. Felt as if we were taking too long to enjoy our $60 meal. You ask people to move in the middle of eating. Just unheard of in my opinion. This used to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Btown. Unfortunately, I realized their standards dropped significantly during the one year I was away. Their famous "chicken in chili oil" came out half Luke-warm and half frozen. Their other dishes tasted identical to each other and the meats were clearly not fresh. I tried the chicken Lo-mein and homemade wonton soup. The noodles of the Lo-mein were really nice, had a nice bite to them. But one cannot fail to acknowledge the tenderness of the chicken. Overall, it maybe lacks a bit more taste. The portion is easily enough for two, or to take half of it home. The wonton soup was really comforting. Good broth, nothing special, but the wontons were very delicate and tasty. Would order it again! It was clear they have a booming carryout & delivery business as the phones were ringing off the hook already! One of the Best Sichuan cuisines in Bloomington amongst the stiffest competition in the state of Indiana. At this point in time, Bloomington boasts 15 restaurants that have authentic chinese menus, which is equal or potentially more than the rest of the state of Indiana all together (Indy metro area has 8 all together which is generous as a few are very limited). The portions are large, food is well spiced, reasonable prices, large but not overwhemingly massive menu, clean interior, lively atmosphere are main reasons I enjoy this place. The quality of the meat (chicken, lamb, pork, prawns (have not had beef)) are all good. My go to dishes at this restaurant are as followed; 1. chongqing chili chicken: a diced fried popcorn style, bone in or out, with dry red chilis also diced in stir fried with peppercorn. 2. Spicy prawns: large succulent prawns served in the same style as the previous dish. 3. Sichuan cold noodle appetizer: cold lo mein noodles in a spicy sour sauce. 4. Dan dan noodle: chinese street food snack with lo mein noodles covered in ground pork stir fried in spicy sauce, served hot..filling and cheap. 5. I live a short walk away from Red and order it for takeout often. The orange chicken is my go-to. It comes with broccoli and rice. I can usually get two servings out of it, and it's just as good the next day. There are actual orange slices in it! Soooo flavorful. I never really eat in the restaurant, simply because it's not necessarily aesthetically pleasing, and the set up is a little weird since it's a fairly small business. Nice people, but made the wrong dish, remade it, that happens, i was okay with that. I got home, and had to return because they forgot the fried rice. I was even very forgiving about that. He reassured me everything was in the bag and specifically said that soy sauce was in the bag, I got home again--no soy sauce...I am too frustrated to go back again...and my family was eating some of their food, so I made a plate. I had to listen to my child cry because they use soy sauce for their egg rolls...of course theynwould not eat it... We won't go back mostly because after I began eating, all of the meat in both dishes was very dry and over-cooked. Apparently, it is cooked in advance, and being the end of the evening before they closed, I got the meat that would be thrown away maybe? Not happy at all. Very, very disappointed.
