Wanted to get my hair braided for vacay and I reached out to a few braiders in my vicinity. Ella was the first stylist to respond to me and was available for the day that I wanted my appointment. On the day of my appointment, she was ready for me on time and made me feel very comfortable. She is also so sweet as well. I initially wanted Fulani braids, but at the last minute I switched to "Boneless" Medium knotless braids, and she was fine with that and did not give me any grief. The overall appt. time was about 4 hours from start to finish. She was faster than I thought it would be which was great. I moved to Pasadena and was nervous about where to find a good braider that didn't charge $500 for knotless braids. I was exploring my new neighborhood and saw this salon, I went in and was greeted by Ella. She does great work and she's efficient, kind and not extremely overpriced like these new braiders. AND SHE WASHES YOUR HAIR YALL. I haven't been to a braider who would wash my hair in about a decade. Given a wash is an extra $25 but that added to the total price is still very affordable and almost half of what I've paid in the past for just braids. I was scheduled with Nia to have a full sew in I had told her that I wanted to leave a certain amount of hair out in the front she said OK and continue to do my braids she sewed the hair and did everything and when it was time to leave my hair, looked a mess she had somebody waiting for her so I know she was rushed so I didn't really make it a big issue and I said ok it's fine. I'll straighten it at home. She said just wear a hat so that I can flatten down. So I was like OK I'm a put my hoodie on because it looks a mess. I get home. I try to fix it. No way could I have fixed it It had a whole bunch of lumps. The hair in the front didn't blend in with the hair. I went back and told her to see if she can add more tracks or to fix it. She said if I would have let her do her job it would have looked right instead of telling her how much hair I want it out. As a professional, I felt like she should've guided me and told me look. It's not gonna blend in. It's not gonna look right. It was 275. I gave her $300. I went back. She took out the hair and I said I was gonna come back so she can redo everything. On top of that she wanted to charge me 125. I never went back. I took out the braids by myself. I wasted money and time for nothing bought the hair for nothing. Not for my short naturally curly hair. I waited a bit to post my review for American Beauties Salon. Honestly, I struggled with whether or not I even should. Then I realized that someone else just may be seeking the information I share. Pros: Salon is clean and it was not full of gossiping hens, neither staff nor clients :) Lake, the owner and my stylist is personable and based on other reviews, quite awesome at weaves, braids, extensions. Cons: This was not the salon I should have selected for a short naturally curly hair cut. I contacted salons that cut my hair type, but I also called Lake because I saw her positive reviews online. I told her that I respected the online reviews re her salon and the type of work she and the other stylists do, but I was hoping that she could "recommend" someone experienced at cutting short naturally curly hair. I assumed that since she was in the industry for a while that she would have great contacts in Pasadena for my specific need. Over the phone Lake assured me that "she" could cut my curly hair. When I sat in her chair we discussed, in detail I must say, the odd shape of my head, as well as the cut shape that I needed, specifically in the mid-back area (it was already cut short). I showed her photos of what I wanted and what I did not want. She agreed!!! Regrettably and unfortunately, Lake did not deliver. This is because she chose to do her own thing and cut, cut, cut, even though I motioned to her that she had cut enough, ESPECIALLY where I had asked her not to cut and she had AGREEEED! I was left with a botched boys hair cut. But still, I could live with it for a while. I asked her to use her trimmer to edge and shape up the hair around my "ears." Turns out, in my opinion, Lake is not adept at using the trimmer, as this made the cut even worse, as if it was even possible. She also cut around the neck and sides, I suppose in an attempt to correct the noticeable uneven mistakes. My daughter attempted to alert me to the horror, but I later learned that I misread her looks and grunts. In the end, I learned a valuable lesson: I was right to search for a stylist that specializes in naturally curly/wavy hair, and yes, don't be cheap; pay the extra cost for a "proper" curly cut. I so wish my old stylist was still around. Thank goodness it's summer and I have a lot of hats! read more

I have struggled to find a salon where the staff are extremely nice and knowledgeable that don't impose their own standards of how I should care for my hair/cut and style it the way they want instead of listening to how I would like to look. Immediately walking into this salon brought a sense of calm and understanding. Lake listened to my troubles with growing out my hair and past experiences with other stylist who either don't call back or shape my hair when all I wanted was a trim. She gracefully explained a variety of things I could try to help lengthen my hair and encouraged me to experiment and see what I believe works for me. She even trimmed my hair exactly as I wanted only taking off the dead ends that were necessary. Having been a customer for over a decade, I knew 1) Lake and her team are highly skilled at creating both natural and synthetic twists and 2) Lake - my stylist - will accommodate last minute requests and walk-ins. I truly wanted to like this hair salon. It's so close to my office so I was excited to find it. I've visited a couple of months ago. I decided to give Lake a call. She was very pleasant, however she mentioned that she would not be in the salon and that I would be contacted by another stylist named Nia. Neil contacted me immediately and scheduled an appointment right away. Upon arriving to the salon, Mia called me and told me that she would be running behind schedule and to return 45 minutes later. This was upsetting seeing as though my appointment time was in about two minutes. I should've cancel my appointment then, but I waited it out. I returned to the salon in 45 minutes to only discover that she was still working on a braided hairstyle. I sat in the waiting area for an additional 50 minutes. I was so upset, but there was no way that I could book another stylist last minute. She washed my hair and then straightened it. After straightening it, I asked that she clip my ends. Instead of trimming my ends, she gave me a short bob cut, which took off about 2 inches unnecessarily. However, the job was done and there was nothing that I could do. She then began in putting the clip in extensions that I brought. She clearly had no experience in this type of style. She then took the extensions out to straighten them first and then gave it a second attempt. Again, she was clearly on the scale because the clip-ins kept sliding out of my hair. After quite some time of her struggling, I told her it was fine and I just wanted to leave. I paid her the full amount which was about $75. She did not even offer a discount for her not being able to install the clip-ins. I left the salon, and by the time I got to my car half of the clip ends we're halfway out anyway. I was so upset, but there was nothing that I could do. I ended up booking another stylist to give me a soul in while my hair grows back. This is unfortunate because I heard so many good things about the owner, Lake. I will not be returning. read more

I had an amazing experience at this hair salon. I was paranoid about going to a hair salon due to the pandemic, however I had the most amazing experience at this shop the shop owner Layke made me feel completely safe. I've been there before and they always give you impeccable service. The stylists are all very nice and professional and they are some of the best at what they do. Upon entering the Salon the shop owner Layke has you stop at the door she then sanatizes your hands, then hands you a pair of gloves to wear, and a mask. Both must be brand new from her shop. If you leave and come back, same routine. After each customer leaves she sanatizes the whole shop literally. Over Kill YES! YES !YES! Thank you Layke of American Beauties now I will only visit your shop because I feel completely safe. I Absolutely love my hair i can't stop smiling. I'd like to write a quick update, I received notification that Lake has contacted yelp to remove the rest of the photos that I originally posted. She also responded to my original review very nastily, insulting me, and told people that I am not experienced in wearing curly hair extensions.( I've been wearing them for over 15 years now off and on, so I am well versed in the quality of hair, types, and textures.) then she deleted her response 2 days later, I got a notification about it. Lucky for her, because people won't see her true attitude. She referred to me as a teenager, and said that "other teenager girls without hair experience would have known how to rock that look." And again blamed me, the client for not being okay with her "70%" satisfaction guaranteed standard. In the original posting I shared a screenshot of the text message that she sent me which states "again I offered to take a look at your hair after it dried completely and if both parties felt that it was not at least 70 percent close to the style with modifications to suite client we can come to some other resolution so its an win win for both parties involved" Which to address that. As a stylist, one should not only aim for 70% satisfaction. Secondly, I already lost because the hair was ruined. It was not the style I asked for regardless of how creative I can be with styling a messed up cut. The hair extensions and style was intended on making my life a little easier at the moment. Its just messed up that this person is not even making this right in a professional way, it's all being swept under the rug. Hopefully no one else is mislead. I would absolutely hate for this to happen to anyone else. read more

I rate this place with across the board with negative stars. I paid $200 for a weave and it's lumpy at the top I specially asked for side bangs and I didn't get that at all! All of my tracks on the top are visible and feel cheated and robbed of my money.
