Oh where would I be without Kymmie and Pammie.. I have followed them everywhere and I'm so glad they were able to open up their own cute, charming, pretty quirky spot. I love the ambiance of blackbyrd...It's a cute shop tucked into a large mix residential/commercial home on Fair Oaks, thankfully by more reasonable parking in South Pas... So location check. It's been a long time since I have been loyal to a hair person, but this relationship has been going strong. I love all the colors, and the highlights that my hair has been with Kymmie as well as the up do's and special occasion hair. Each time she does as she pleases because that's what I ask for and I love it! We have been together for almost 5 years and for me that's a long time. I look forward to the next 5. Pam does the cuts and my daughter will not go to anyone else other than her. There are several things to consider when choosing the perfect salon. First, is the stylist a master of their craft? Pamela, who happens to be the owner of blackbyrd, certainly is. She's been cutting my hair for several years now, and she always manages to do an impeccable job. She is great at listening to my requests, examining pictures of what I want, and then creating that 'do in a way that works for my hair, face, and overall look. She's a perfectionist when it comes to cutting hair, which I love--fine tuning at the end. She's easy to talk to and also gives a darn good head massage during your shampoo. I've recommended many friends, and they've done nothing but sing her praises. Lucky for me, my colorist, Cristen, is now at blackbyrd as well. I like to brighten up my blond, and Cristen is fantastic at natural looking highlights. She's equally adept at my requests for "this color blond" (holding out a picture of Sienna Miller) as she is at, "I don't know...brighter? More platinum than honey?" While there may be other talented stylists/colorists in LA, the thing that sets blackbyrd apart is the setting. Each detail is unique and well thought out: from the tin wall at the washing station, to the French tunes playing on the antique record console, to the vintage handkerchiefs to dry your hands in the restroom. Charming salon located inside a bungalow ... is neat and clean and well decorated. It's not cluttered like many other places and doesn't feel like a museum piece, either. Run by two women,it's private and calming. Great jazz soundtrack when I was there... Pam is a skilled stylist who got right down to business. I wanted a short cut with some heaviness in the front. Looks very French...She delivered. I received several compliments on my chic new look within a few hours after leaving the salon. Cuts are $95 . I think color starts at $120, but check.Kymmie is the colorist. The salon uses Davines, a high end Italian line that smells great and is very gentle. After moving from NYC last summer I had tried to hold out and stay loyal to my NY stylist of 5 years, but after meeting Pamela I knew she'd take care of me. Pamela is very thoughtful about her work and is a great communicator so you're confident that she knows exactly what you want or offers great suggestions on ways to mix things up. I have thin/fine long hair and somehow she finds a way to layer my hair so that it miraculously has volume! I let my hair air dry most days because the cut is that good. I can just spray some sea spray to bring out the layers and I'm done. My sister has natural big curls and very thick hair and Pamela has also made her hair low maintenance and fabulous! On top of her amazing skills, she is also one of the nicest and warmest people I know. I so look forward to catching up with her from the chair and always leave feeling more beautiful inside and out because of her. To top it all off, Blackbyrd is one of the most beautiful spaces I've ever been in. The decor makes you feel like you've strolled into a gorgeous old parlor that contains lovely music and fantastic company. I believe most (if not all) of the products used are natural and/or vegan and leave my hair smelling and looking great. I've slowly transitioned to Pamela's suggestions of shampoo, conditioner and prep products and my hair has never been healthier. This is the salon I've been searching for and I can't imagine why I would ever go anywhere else. Pam has been cutting my parents and younger brothers hair for YEARS and recently my mom suggested I go and check out her new salon. The salon is GORGEOUS. The attention to detail here is just so far beyond what I would ever expect to find in a salon. It's almost like you get to take a vacation from real life for a few hours and just enjoy being in a beautiful and well thought out environment. Beyond the interior though, the service is just impeccable. Pam does such a great job with my hair. I love that she cuts it so that it's easy for me to maintain on my own. I also love that my hair looks amazing for DAYS after she styles it. Black Byrd is the best salon I've ever been to. The vibe and aesthetic of the salon is 1930s chic: vintage with jazz playing and fresh smelling flowers. It's so relaxing to be in there. Honestly I want to do a photo or video shoot in there! In addition to an adorable interior, Pamela gives amazing haircuts. She's sweet and nice, and she really listens to what I have to say. I have curly hair. For some reason, hair dressers like to blow out my hair straight and the cut, well it's for blowing out. I never blow dry my hair though. I love my curl. Pamela loves my curl too. She loves my hair, and she cuts it giving attention to each little swirl and its desires. I have a hard time finding the right hair dresser. Then I stay with them until they move, leave the business, I move. I've even driven thirty miles to my old hair dresser's house for a year. She'd had to leave hair dressing; it'd wrecked her back and her wrists and fingers, but she had a handful of clients she still saw. I walked in off the street the first time Pamela cut my hair, before she opened her own salon. I was looking for a new hair dresser. I got lucky, and she's right across the street now. Pamela has great style sensibilities. You can see it in the salon she's built. It's warm and inviting, the lighting, the fresh flowers, the furnishings that have been well used. The place reflects her personality, warm and inviting. I feel beautiful even in process and well cared for. We always have fun. She's not afraid to go super short when I ask, and it looks fabulous and feminine. Or provide awesome cuts for growing out. She cuts my teenage son's hair too. He's blonde, and every cut shows. HOLLY is a masterful stylist. She has cut my hair four times, and each cut has grown out well and looked good throughout the growing-in process. I have fine, short hair with lots of cowlicks and weirdness, and Holly navigates it all with no problem. The salon itself is classy and comfortable, and each client gets an individual pot of tea or a French press of coffee served on beautiful vintage china. Holly's expertise keeps me happily driving all the way from Long Beach to Pasadena on a regular basis without complaint.
