Cuisine: 7 Service: 8 Decor: 6 Value: 8 Overall: 8 The anticipation for this Burmese restaurant was very high because I kept missing them and coming to this NJ area on days they are closed. So finally when I got to try their food, I was glad it wasn't a letdown. Burmese Tea Leaf Salad (8/10) - Always been a fan of this dish ever since I first tasted it. Years later, I loved the versions I had in Myanmar too. Their version is less acidic and pungent, but still delicious. Mohinga (7/10) - This national dish of Burma is very interesting because the flavors are unusual. I liked this item but it may have gotten a bit too mushy during the drive home. Seejet Noodles (7/10) - Good flavor, but I'm not sure if duck enhances this dish. Noodles were great. Pork Curry (8/10) - Maybe my favorite dish. The meat was tender but with a bite, while the curry had a lot of depth. Coconut Chicken Soup (6.5/10) - Didn't love this dish, but it wasn't bad. The sweetness may not have been my cup of tea. Shrimp Curry (7.5/10) - another good curry dish, but this one felt a bit oily. The shrimps were cooked well. I would note that their Balachaung is worth buying. You can add it to anything and it will enhance the flavor. The owners were so nice that they included a complimentary box of it because I bought so much food. Glad I finally had a chance to eat their food. I will stop by whenever in town.
This place is amazing - family dinner and super intimate. the owner was extremely kind and ensured my first time trying burmese food would be great. he gave us some free spicy chips that had a nice little kick and plenty of flavor. i took them home and love munching on them. when ordering we asked what his favorites were as well as how each dish was prepared. he happily recommended us plenty of options and since we liked spicy he supplied us with some fantastic spicy side sauce. it was reminiscent of Sriracha to me but tasted better, a tad bitter sweeter in my opinion. we ended up getting the tea leaf salad which was amazing. it isn't a traditional fresh salad necessarily and had a lot more nuts but the flavors paired great together. we got the bait noodles which were stir fryed with a sweet sausage, an egg, and seafood. these noodles were fantastic - extremely flavorful and all the toppings were cooked to perfection. it was a pretty large portion so i had leftovers. the noddles had a great stir fryed flavor to them and the bean sprouts added a perfect crunch. this paired with the spicy sauce was a match made in heaven. i also paired all thai with their milk tea, he warned me that it was strong but i prefer my tea super strong. it was reminiscent to a hong kong milk tea but less sweet, overall super happy i got the tea and loved it. lastly they gave us a coconut jelly for dessert, the texture wasn't jello like but instead snappy which i really enjoyed. flavor wise tasted just like coconut milk and was a great ending. overall the service food and ambiance of this family run restaurant was great. i will 100% be returning to try out more of the menu!
When I see a restaurant with only 5 star reviews, it often makes me raise an eyebrow. It's either all hype or genuinely an amazing restaurant. After trying Amayar Kitchen, I can safely say this family run establishment deserves every single 5 star review it has. This was actually my first time having Burmese cuisine, and I was super excited as I love south East Asian flavors, so I knew this was gonna hit. But omg, these Bait stir fried noodles were SO GOOD! Think pad thai noodles, less sweet and more of a savory chow mein vibe, but unique in its own way. All the toppings mixed into the noodles were super fresh and high quality. Shrimp was plump and bouncy, the sausage had a wonderful sweet flavor that complemented the savory noodles, and the egg was scrambled PERFECTLY. Still thinking about the incredibly umami wok fried flavor and this massive portion, definitely great to share or make 2 meals out of! Alongside the noodles, tried the tea leaf salad and a hot tea with cream. The hot tea reminded me a lot of HK style milk tea, with a strong black tea flavor and not as sweet, which honestly I prefer! The thing that makes this restaurant stand out is certainly the service. The owner, Sato, personally introduced himself and explained the menu thoroughly. It honestly felt more like walking into an old friends home for dinner than a restaraunt , in the best way. He really makes it a point to connect with everyone who tries his food, even giving us a bag of his homemade chips to thank us for coming in! Overall, the food quality was superb, extremely reasonably priced for the portion size, and paired with the amazingly personal service made this an unforgettable dinner experience. I will note the dining room is quite small and informal, but it was perfect for a weeknight date! Genuinely cannot wait to come back the next time I am in this area!! Would highly recommend!
Great Burmese food. Every dish ordered was good. Tried the mohinga, the nanjee noodle salad and the tea leaf salad. I have never had Burmese food before and I was impressed by how good it was and what I have been missing out on. Highly recommended!!
I've never had Burmese food before, but when someone described the cuisine as a "marriage of Indian, Thai, and Chinese flavors", I knew I had to give this amalgamation of my favorite foods a try. Enter Amayar Kitchen. As far as I can tell, this is the only place you can get Burmese food outside of the city, and it's authentic to boot. In fact, when we informed our server we were first timers to Burmese cuisine, she walked us through some recommendations with comments like, "This one is my dad's specialty," or "My grandmother simmers this stew for hours." We were endeared to the fact that the menu featured family recipes and quickly discovered Amayar is a family-run affair, with different members of the family chipping in different parts of the restaurant. That kind of love seeps into everything here. The space is homey and somehow feels more like a family's dining room than a restaurant. When the owner/dad found out we were newcomers, he asked us if we were okay with spice (which we were), and kindly offered us a complimentary bag of their Sato chips. It's his own brand of house-made kettle-fried chips, topped with a spice blend that left a pleasant tingle of heat in the mouth. We tried a few dishes and enjoyed everything heartily. At our server's recommendation, we tried the mohinga, or noodles served in a slow-cooked, catfish-based stew. Our curry was filled with giant chunks of tender meat and potatoes, and my only regret was that I didn't elect to pony up the extra dollar or two for coconut rice, which I'm sure would have been a fantastic complement. The surprising star of our meal was the palata appetizer - fried flatbread topped with the most fragrant beef mixture. We ended up dunking that flatbread in the liquid depths of all our entrees, with our complimentary Sato chips as a crunchy topping to every other bite. By the end of our meal, we were not only well fed but felt like we'd gained a few extra friends in the Amayar family. So suffice it to say, service is simply excellent. Come hungry and expect to be treated like family.
There are truly no words that can fully capture how special this place is--but I will try. This Burmese restaurant is, without exaggeration, addictive. Every single dish is crafted with so much care, flavor, and passion that it becomes impossible not to come back again and again. The taste is something I honestly cannot even begin to describe--you just have to experience it. Sato, the owner, is one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met. He goes above and beyond for every single customer, and it shows in everything he does. You can feel his passion for cooking in every bite. He is always smiling, always welcoming, and truly puts his heart into his food. The dish in the photo is called "Aja's Special," and it says everything you need to know. My husband couldn't even wait for me to take the picture--his fork was already going in for a taste. That's how irresistible it is. This is not just a restaurant--it's an experience. A warm, welcoming place where incredible food meets an incredible person behind it. Just a warning: you will get addicted. Without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants in New Jersey.
First time trying Burmese food ! Everything was amazing ! Friendly staff & service , the place is decorated with burmese artwork. We had the potato samosa, shan noodle and the chicken & potato curry. We will back to try other food ! Thank you :)
I would like to try a bunch of different items from the menu so on my second visit I went for something different. This time I got an order of potato samosa and the coconut chicken noodle soup. I thought I'd be getting one big Samosa however it was a handful of mini phyllo dough potato bites with a spicy dipping sauce which were really good however they got a bit soggy because of the packaging. The coconut soup from the noodles was outrageously good. In fact it was so good that I had a bit leftover and saved it to use in another dish because I couldn't bear to throw it away. It was a plentiful portion with all the different flavors and textures you would hope for. Can't wait to keep making my way through the menu and finding the next amazing dish. Aside from the food, the staff is incredibly kind.
This was my first time trying Burmese food and I was really interested in trying something new. We walked inside the restaurant and were seated instantly. The service was very helpful and recommended many popular dishes for us to try. We took our server's advice and ordered the coconut chicken soup, the beef curry, and the palata with chicken and potato. I was very excited to try the palata, which came out first, as I LOVE Malaysian food and this reminded me of a Malasian curry dosa. The palata was good, but I thought the bread was very greasy, and the curry was less thick and flavorful than the Malasian curry I typically love. Next came the beef curry, which was very delicious. The curry had a unique spice blend and was incredibly flavorful. The beef was cooked perfectly and was fall-apart tender. The coconut chicken soup may have been my least favorite item. I think this is because I was comparing it to Malaysian laksa in my head, which i find to be much more flavorful and full of veggies. I found myself looking for sauces or a lime to squeeze into the soup to give it a bit more of a kick. I also wasn't a huge fan of the cracker inside the soup, as it wasn't as crispy as I expected it to be. Overall the food was very fresh and very good, but I think I expected a little more of a punch in the flavor/spice department.
Burmese food has been in my bookmarks for quite some time now and I finally got to get a taste! I called my order in for pick-up and was told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. I ordered the Lunch Special ($13): Bait Noodles dish and fried tofu appetizer. I also added in the Burmese Iced Milk Tea ($4). Lunch specials are available Tuesday-Friday from 11am-3pm. The restaurant is fairly small with only 4-5 tables for dine-in and it's easy to miss when you're driving by. It shares a parking lot with other businesses. When I walked in, I was greeted by Sato, the owner, and his kind employees. He was so sweet and even gave me a bag of complimentary Sato chips (original Ruffle chips with chili flakes and other spices). I really, really wanted to give them 5 stars, but the food just didn't hit home. -Bait Noodles (fried flat noodles with assorted seafood and sausage): The noodles were oily and didn't have much flavor unless I added a ton of chili sauce, which they only gave me a small amount of. The seafood (shrimp and calamari) was fresh, though. My favorite part was the sweet sausage. -Fried Tofu: I expected it to be a lot crispier. It tasted okay. I wouldn't order this again. -Burmese Iced Tea with Milk: I would have enjoyed this more if it was sweeter. It tastes like a classic black milk tea, but with a much stronger tea taste. Would I give them a second shot? Yes... I need to explore more dishes. The menu isn't too extensive and focuses mainly on noodles and curries (both of which I'm a fan of), so there MUST be something I'll love...Most entrees are $14-$16, which is a steal.
Let me just say, I will ABSOLUTELY NOT be the person who puts a blemish on Amayar Kitchen's 5 star rating because I have nothing but praise for this gem of a Burmese restaurant. I first heard about Amayar when Yelp came out with some variation of their top restaurants list a few years back and Amayar was somewhere close or at the top of that list. From my experience, they might as well have been the top dog there. I won't beat around the bush with my thoughts because everything about our experience was absolutely FANTASTIC and it checked every box in the book when it came to the expectations we had. Even though we had never tried Burmese food, the whole restaurant and the food just felt and tasted authenticate because of the uniqueness of it all. We dropped in for lunch on a scorcher of a Friday afternoon around 12:15pm and there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant so we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves, especially midway through when they left. The menu was relatively simple - Appetizers, Noodles, Curries, Side Dishes, Drinks, Desserts and Lunch Specials, which was only served on Tuesday-Friday 11am-3pm. Since we had ZERO experience eating Burmese food, we did our homework ahead of time on Yelp and pretty much ordered what we thought were some of the more popular items based on previous reviews: BURMESE TEA LEAF SALAD (aka Lahpet Thoke) - I never really get excited about a salad appetizer (I mean who does?), but my goodness, this small dish was one reallllly great way to start our meal here. This combination of traditional Burmese pickled tea leaves with fried garlic, beans, sesame seeds, cabbage and tomatoes was extraordinary. To the common Burmese person, this might have been just your everyday salad, but this here is a MUST ORDER. I can't really describe the taste of the beautiful simplicity of this salad - you just have to try it for yourself. BAIT NOODLES (FRIED FLAT NOODLES WITH ASSORTED SEAFOOD AND SAUSAGE) AND POTATO SAMOSA LUNCH SPECIAL - Excellent noodles. If I had to relate it to a dish I've had before, it sort of reminded me of Pad Thai...BUT BETTER! There was some squid, shrimp, Chinese sausage and egg mixed in and, once again, so delicious. COCONUT CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP AND SPRING ROLLS LUNCH SPECIAL - Some of the best creamy coconut curry I've ever had. For full transparency, I actually did not mean to order this dish, but due to a miscommunication I lucked into enjoying this ridiculously flavorful curry chicken noodle soup. First of all, there was a lot of noodles in the order so you'll be plenty full before you begin to slurp down all of the curry (which I did). There was also some cilantro, onions mixed in to add to the flavor, but, seriously, did it really need it? Yes, I had this on a 95 degree day, but 'm sure it'd be extremely refreshing in the heart of the winter. BURMESE ICED TEA WITH MILK FALUDA - I'll comment on both of these simultaneously because they were probably the only 2 downers of the day and we should have known it wasn't in our wheelhouse of things we like. Unfortunately, both were a bit too sweet for our liking. Not to say it's not for others, but neither drink/dessert was our cup of tea (literally). The Faluda was actually a dessert, but it can be enjoyed as a drink too. As for service, they were very, very warming and welcoming. Our waiter was checking on us and engaging with us constantly. The service by him couldn't have been any better. Although the restaurant is not huge and seems fairly quiet most of the time (I pass by it frequently), don't be fooled by the lack of buzz because this is one heck of a restaurant. They don't have 5 stars on Yelp for nothing, right????? Let's just say they backed up the positive reviews they've gotten in the past in every single way possible. Will be visiting again real, real soon.
First time trying Burmese food. Ordered the seejet noodles (duck), beef curry with coconut rice, and palata with chicken. If you have never had it, the flavors are similar to Thai and Indian. We ordered this meal for delivery. The beef curry and palata with chicken were my favorites, which were rich in flavor and comforting. The duck noodles were mild and less flavorful than the other dishes, but I enjoyed the textures. Portion sizes were generous.
I've been wanting to check out this spot for a while because there aren't a whole lot (if any) Burmese restaurants I know of in the area. I've only had it a handful of times but love trying new foods. Hubby and I came in for lunch around 1:30 on a Saturday. There were probably only one or two other tables there at the time. We started out with Sato chips, which are chips with their chili seasoning. I have a feeling they're just store bought chips tossed with seasoning, which didn't really feel worth it for $4. Next up, we had the tea leaf salad, which was good. Though, it's not for everybody because it has a very nutty taste. For my main, I went with the Bait Noodles (stir-fried flat noodles with seafood and sausage). This was really good, especially with the chili sauce they gave us. It had the wok hei, and the squid was surprisingly tender, and not chewy. It reminded me of char kway teow. Hubby had the beef curry, which he enjoyed. I liked the curry but the beef was too dry for me. Next time, I'll be back to try the mohinga and the kyae oh noodle soup!
Reviews are largely positive. People highlight the fresh, flavorful food, exceptional service, and a warm, homey atmosphere. Portions are generous and prices reasonable.

Delicious and authentic Burmese food! One of my friends tried this spot and insisted we all give it a try as well - and it definitely exceeded expectations. I got the bait noodle as the entree, and we shared the tofu salad and chicken potato palata. While the bait noodle and the tofu salad were so delicious, the standout dish was the chicken potato palata. It was absolutely astounding - the flatbread was so fresh and the chicken potato curry was just so flavorful. All in all, it's a great Burmese spot near Hackensack! read more

I am beyond happy to learn that a Burmese restaurant opened up in my area within 15 mins away by car, the ONLY Burmese restaurant in the surrounding NJ counties. Ok, so I may have discovered this gem 9 months late after their grand opening last year in December '20. Nonetheless, I placed an order over the phone and arrived promptly for pickup within 30min. It did take longer before the food was ready since they were busy with dine in customers, and other take outs. There is a small parking lot to the side of the restaurant. The restaurant is super clean and still looks brand new upon entry so you know they keep their place spotless. There is a bottle of hand sanitizer on every table. Social distancing decals are clearly indicated on the floor too! Plus, there are beautiful traditional artwork on display throughout the restaurant. We were greeted by every staff upon entering. The family running restaurant is well staffed with 2-3 cooks in the kitchen, and three waitresses, and one gentleman (owner) who is extremely friendly. He welcomed us with a bag of homemade potato chips coated with crushed red pepper flakes and aromatic Burmese tea leaves. Delicious! I want to buy a few bags next time! Their menu contains a generous selection of authentic Burmese appetizers, entrees, beverages, and desserts. I was definitely in for a special treat! We ordered food for 4 people to allow my hubby and I two meals :) the staff thought we ordered for 4 people . Everything was packed in sustainable packaging, with minimal plastic. Bonus- plastic cups are biodegradable, which I love!! My personal highly recommended dishes: 1. Mohinga-fish soup (yes there are shredded pieces of real fish to create a thick broth) with thin rice noodle. Delicious crispy garlic, cilantro, chickpea fritters, one wedge of lime, and hard boiled eggs. 2. Coconut chicken noodle soup (Ohn No Khauk Swe)- the English name gives it away- Tasty and creamy coconut broth with chicken chunks. Comes with thin rice noodles, thinly slice red onions, one wedge of lime, chickpea fritters, hard boiled egg, and cilantros. 3. Beef curry- 6 large chunks of perfectly braised beef in thick sauce, and comes with a side of toasted coconut rice. You can also ask for regular rice. 4. Faluda- if you enjoy Halo Halo (Filipino cold crushed ice desert with beans, jelly, small tapioca, flan, fruits, and a scoop of ube ice cream), then you will definitely be a fan of faluda. This dessert is milk base with small tapioca, jelly, rose syrup, beans, a piece of cake, and vanilla ice cream. We can't wait until our next visit to try out other dishes!! I highly recommend this place. read more

First time trying Burmese food and I had a great experience. It felt like eating a home cooked meal. I ordered the beef curry for pickup and when I got there I had a small convo with (i think) the owner. He ended up giving me these chips that were spicy because I told him I like spicy and they were so yum. The curry comes with a side of rice and egg rolls (there were other options). Loved the egg rolls and the beef was cooked so well. Everything was really great. The service was good too the person at the front doing the orders was very kind. read more
Being that one of my partner's sons-in-law is of Burmese descent, it was decided that this would be a great place for dinner serving Burmese cuisine. Having been here numerous times, I introduced the owner, Aung to everyone. We started out with various appetizers vegetable fritters, potato samosas and chicken satay. These were accompanied with their own sauce and had a nice kick. For entrees, we ordered NanJee Noodle Salad (Thick white noodles two with chicken and one without) and SeeJet Noodles (Roast duck with garlicky noodles). Hands down this is an authentic Burmese cuisine full of rich flavors and textures. Everything was delicious and it didn't disappoint. Will definitely come back to try other new dishes. read more

Very unique and although similar to Thai it has a number of unique elements. The Tea Leaf salad is one of their specialties and it is truly unlike any salad I have had. I liked it but many others rave about it. I also had some of the Sato chips. Not ordinary chips but has a unique oil flavor and LOTS of dried chilies, this is only for those that like spice. I did not try it but apparently their tofu is made with no soy and only chickpeas (this is the traditional Burmese way). Will have to come back and try it. read more

My wife and I pass down Pasaic Avenue about 4 times a week, and just recently we noticed a new restaurant popped up, and a Burmese restaurant at that. Well we love to try different and exotic foods so we decided to stop by while we were hanging out with my cousin. I will discuss our first visit and then our second afterwards. It looks pretty small from the outside but this is a deception, it's actually quite big inside, like Dr. Who's TARDIS lol.. It has a quietly nice Burmese decore and a parking lot. Upon our first visit we were greeted by Sato, owner and chef, he is a very jovial fellow and funny. Sato offered us hot green tea. For appetizers we decided on the Plata and Beef Potato Cutlet. For her Main my wife decided on Seejet Noodles, my cousin chose Kyae Oh Noodles (with only pork meatballs) and I opted for Curry Shrimp with coconut rice. My wife's duck was succulent and soft, my cousin loved his pork ball Noodles and my Curry shrimp was tasty with a fantastic sauce, the coconut rice was Superb! On our second trip here only my wife and I decided to come, my cousin is from Manhattan so he stayed in NYC. This time around we met Sato's wife Lynn and Andre a young man who's assisting. Lynn is very nice, Andre is helpful. This time we went straight for the entrees. My wife ordered The Kyae Oh Noodles that my cousin chose but with everything that came with it, no omissions. I decided upon Fish Fillet Curry with coconut rice and Balachaung on the side, I grabbed me a Burmese Iced tea with Milk to go. This place doesn't disappoint! The service was exceptional, the meals were outstanding, full of flavor. This is definitely our top spot to eat! read more

Ordered takeout from this new place with the intention of trying everything. Both in part bc of all the previous positive reviews and bc of Burmese food is new to me. What I ordered: Pallata w/ beef (you can order it with chicken, beef or peas)* star of meal Morhinga Soup See Jet Noodles * star of meal Khyae Oh Noodle soup *star of meal Mixed Veggie Curry Burmese Dessert Sampler (2nd options as they were out of banana leaf sticky rice) What I thought of everything: Blown away with the freshness, the flavor, fairness of portions. The staff was friendly and appreciative. The dishes were reminiscent of flavors you would find in Indian(curry),Vietnamese(Khyae Oh) and Thai(Morhinga) Khyae Oh could remind some of a lite Phô The noodles of all dishes, just cooked perfectly, a sign of freshness. Not clumped together or mushy/dry And if you are taking out, do yourself a favor and grab a bag of their Sato chips for your ride home, just to hold you over till you can get home. A crunchy subtly spicy treat. I was happy I did. I recommend my starred dishes and whatever else that may interest you. I will be back and not just to try the banana leaf sticky rice read more

Exceptionally flavorful, savory and authentic Burmese food! Not kidding, our jaws dropped so many times at how well-made each dish was, included with their own defined flavor profiles, and the interplay between certain sauces and dishes, is just so refreshing. One day in January, me and partner heard about a new Burmese restaurant in the area -- which you'd be lucky to even find any in the whole New Jersey or New York state area. Quietly holding hopes, we drove down to Amayar Kitchen for a quick taste. Flash forward one month and several repeat visits later? Man, we just can't stop. At this point, we've worked through the entirety of the menu (desserts, noodles, curries, sides, drinks -- yep, my tastebuds mastered it all). Yes, it's that good. Yes, you should try it. And if you're new to Burmese cuisine, try to work through their menu a bit -- the variety of flavors might surprise you. Pros: * Noodle, rice, dessert, appetizer portions are great * Lunch special sets far exceed beyond its own value * Desserts are deliciously house made, ingredients for each dish in fantastic quality * Staff and service is friendly, earnest, and eager, and feel present with their customers * Parking is also available (in the parking lot directly left of the restaurant building) * Interior decor feels modern and clean, with hints of decor and artwork on display (couldn't stop ogling my first time) * Even the restroom and backroom look clean and well maintained * COVID guidelines nicely kept in mind All around, we love the attention to detail and obvious care to the business. Cons: * None * I can't pick a favorite? Okay, fine fine, I'll try. What are my favorite dishes? "...." "............." ..... I'll just let my photos from Jan-Feb speak for itself... (go look!). But the legendary tier of food for me, in the sense of "re-ordered so many times the waitresses knows what we'll get" has been: shrimp curry (yum!), beef curry (yum!), Burmese tea leaf salad (it's so good), SeeJet & NanJee & Mohinga AND Kyae Oh Noodles, beef palata, banana leaf sticky rice, faluda, coconut drink. It's all worth trying out. More interestingly, we learned Amayar Kitchen opened in the middle of COVID pandemic, in probably the worst and trying times to do so, maybe just a long shot by a long shot. Our first thought was "okay, who would do that?? And how?!" But when main chef (also owners) came out to greet us... we started to understand their food and cooking come from. Inspired by dreams, fueled with passion, skill, and appreciation for all types of food -- and I think other regulars who go here, they see that too. Keep it up!! And as it happens, now that I'm finished writing this? I'll be well on my way to Amayar Kitchen. read more

I always enjoy my experience here! Not only is the staff lovely (the father and daughter duo are so friendly), the ambience is clean and comfortable. Every dish I've tried is amazing and unique. I particularly love the duck noodles and the tea leaf salad. The noodles are chewy and flavorful, while the salad is fresh and has a nice twist to it. Lunch specials were a good portion size for the price, flavorful, and an excellent amount of our protein choices in the dishes. We hoped for more spice, but that's the cuisine, not the restaurant's fault. Major negative, however, is that they are cash only. Until they start taking credit cards, I'm not likely to make as many purchases there. (They offer the less-professional payment option of Venmo, but I'm not going to set up an account for just one restaurant.) read more

In our party of four, there are two vegetarians (dairy and eggs ok, but not fish or meat). Do you have any vegetarian entrees?
Yes, there are a couple of vegetarian dishes. I also think that since they seem very accommodating, they might be able to prepare something that does not normally appear on…
