The Cheesesteak Sandwich (Shorty) with provolone & mushrooms
Lyn N.

Quick service. Classic cheesesteak, I substituted with provolone cheese. Grilled onions and mushrooms are a must. It was delicious. Standard cheesesteak location with various badges from different departments of authority. I'm curious if people that visit contributed their patches.

I tried to call to place an order but I guess they were busy so I wound up ordering online. There is plenty of parking, didn't have any issues finding a spot. My order was ready by the time I got there, quick service. My boyfriend and I split a half-size the works. You get a lot of food for what you pay. The amount of meat we got was super generous. Unfortunately, I think they either neglected to or underseasoned the meat. It was pretty bland, needed some salt. The bread was good, cheese good all the other toppings were good. Might give them another chance, maybe they were having a rough day.

The menu has changed from the last time I visit this place. It seems that they're trying to minimize the amount of items there since most of the items that were removed from the menu were not much ordered by customers. Or it could be that they're trying to cut costs. Nothing has really changed so far. I find that the fries are better than the cheesesteaks in my opinions since they're freshly cut with some extra crispiness. Doesn't really mean that the cheesesteaks are bad. I'm still shocked that not only that small fries are like regular fries but the smallest size of the cheesesteaks, which is shorty, is like a regular size. Pretty much the atmosphere is the same except that they added a kiosk for us to order online. I still say that this is one of the cheesesteak restaurants in the Bay Area.

Amato's is San Jose's omage to Philly... Just a solid old school Cheesesteake. Even the venue looks like an old school diner. Ever since I discovered Amato's, it's been my go to for a typical / traditional Philly Cheesesteak sando. Not the nicest of venues; it's got that old school Blue Collar diner vibe going on...simple chairs and tables with a good amount of bar seats, nothing fancy. Parking isn't and issue, there are a good amount of spots in the plaza. If you've never been here, drive slowly it's very easy to pass. Can't say I've ever been disappointed here. Everything is on par with Pat and Geno's (creators of the Philly Cheesesteak Sandos) in Philly. Actually Amato's might even be better...they don't use the fake cheese...lol. A few sandos I devoured over the years... #CheeseSteakSando: ~ 2. CHEESE STEAK SANDWICH - 4.5/5 ~ 7. PEPPER CHEESE STEAK - 4.5/5 ~ 10. THE WORKS - 5/5 (Shorty) ~ 19. CHICKEN WORKS - 4.5/5 ~ 28. SAUSAGE, PEPPER & ONIONS - 4.5/5 (Shorty) ...and yes that FOOD INFLATION is real. Prices have crept up over the years like all other places. SMH! Still worth it...

So I have a total "Buyers Remorse" relationship to Amato's. Don't get me wrong, the cheesesteaks are fantastic. So good in fact that it is way way too easy to overindulge and eat more than your system can handle hence the 30 minute later regret lol. Plus a good cheesesteak is like adamantium, you need to keep it warm and moving. Once it gets cold its game over IMHO. Heck as I have aged, even their smallest size, a 'shorty", is easily 1.5 meals in and of itself. Chicken California: Yes i went foophy under the mistaken notion the chicken would be a lighter way to go than the traditional CS. Nope. It was however glorious. The interplay between the chicken and cheese, the bacon doing what bacon does, and then the fresh toppings helping but failing to cut the over the top richness. Each bite of that gooey cheesy savor mixture was awesome. Awesome local place for those hankering for a taste of Philly. It is comparable or exceeds some of the best the city of brotherly love has to offer, and all without transiting through that miserable airport they have there.

TL/DR at bottom Staff was nice, place is definitely a diner/hole in the wall vibe but don't let that scare you away from the food. Chicken was very juicy, even though ordered parm got this by mistake and it was worth it. Sandwiches were good, but felt like missing sauce and not sure if it was the bread that made it feel that way. While works had peppers, they werent hot or too sweet so maybe need to ask for more. Definitely added some BBQ and Ranch to help and when we did that, Sandwich was fantastic. Fries are delicious and only needed a little salt and pepper which was at table. TL/DR - Sandwich needed sauce, make sure to order Sweet/Hot peppers

I got the cheesesteak hoagie which was really good but felt like there were too many veggies. It was a really big sandwich and I only had half. I tried the works and it definitely better as it was well balanced. Next time I will be getting the cheesesteak for a well balanced sandwich. The fries were decent fries, very hot when they came out. The service was awesome! The helped us wrap our sandwiches after we ate half of them.

What happened? We've been loyal customer for YEARS. We went in on 2/14/26 and the food was drastically different. The bread was not the same. Starting with the bread. It was not their regular sub bread. Tasted a bit stale, did not taste fresh and it was chewy. The onion rings (wish we took a picture) were burnt to a crisp and skinny. They were black. They were not their regular golden thick onion rings. The crinkle fries def tasted frozen and also super crunchy... not good. The filling of my sub was plain too, no seasoning. Im so disappointed. I don't know what happened but something was off. I hate to do this but it should be flagged so they can get it back to what is used to be :/

Great place!!! Had myself a cheese steak hoagie that was delicious. Super clean flavor that you can individually taste. I got the 7" and it was pretty filling.

The Works (shorty) was decent overall. The fries were freshly made, and the customer service was pleasant. There was ample parking and plenty of indoor seating available.

Cheese not melted only enough to blend with the meat.. biting into a cold sandwich is crazy AF

On the regular this place hits the spot,I recommend not going after 8:30 or else you'll get a super cold Philicheese sandwich,I was so disappointed first time ever getting a cold sub frm this place.. I work 10min away and it's always steaming hot but not today idk they probably wasn't having it knowing I was the last customer of the day.. when I say cold I meen cold.. u can tell by the cheese if it's super hot too the way it melts.. this cheese was set and not melting

After checking out their yelp page I saw they had food as well so the plan was set to go for lunch. There's a small but empty enough parking lot along with street parking. I walked over around lunch time and there was one person ahead of me. I ordered a steak torta which seemed promising. The lady who took my order twisted my arm into getting a licuado (milkshake). While waiting for my food, I went next door for a drink and chips. My food was ready in less than 10 minutes and the line had grew by that time. The torta was really tasty and fresh, all the ingredients hit the notes needed. The bread stood out in good and bad ways. The flavor was above average but it crumbled quite a bit. There was enough inside to hold up to the thick bread so I cant complain. My biggest gripe is there wasn't any salsa on the side and I didnt see any in the store. Maybe I just didnt ask? But if there is some available, this place could be a hit out the park. There was also a slight taste of tuna in my sandwich. They may have used the same spatula for the mayo as the tuna perhaps, im not sure. I didn't get sick or anything so I won't complain too much, just mentioning it. Salsa woulda covered it and elevated it but this is just my take. The licuado was standard mexican childhood approved. 7 bones for the drink and my total was like 19 bucks. Thats very fair because the torta is filling enough for barely 11 dollars, great value.
