My wife, son and I went to Amato's the other day. We ordered a " Whole" cheesesteak sandwich, an order of fries and onion rings. We typically go to their Saratoga Avenue location. But, we were near the Almaden location and were hungry. We always enjoy the food at the Saratoga location, so we decided to give this location a try. The cheesesteak sandwich was very good and filling. The onion rings and fries were also really good. We weren't able to finish all the cheesesteaks, so we had them wrap-up the leftovers to enjoy later. Their service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was busy, but they got our food to us quickly. Please stop making the young Black man work by himself, especially on a Saturday night. I'm sure he's doing the best he can, but the food suffers. I had not been to this location in a long while, but was excited to see them open when I did a drive by recently. I did a quick stop on way home from San Jose on way back to the East Bay. I had ordered a 7 inch Philly Mushrooms and Sweet peppers, another Reg. Philly and Cheese Fries to go. The food was made to order and it was super gooey and just the way I remember them pre pandemic. Been wanting to try this place for awhile now. I absolutely loved the touchpad to order (makes customizing so much easier). The eatery itself is medium sized but plenty of space for a large party or sings dining. I am frequently in that plaza & foot traffic is pretty low. The workers said 1 word to me the entire time I was there (called my name for the order) so do with that what you will. I got a classic Philly, it did leave little to my imagination but the meat was fresh and so were the toppings. Amato's was a major letdown. I have been craving a good Philly Cheesecake and I was excited to go to Amato's. I had Amato's years ago and I remember it being really good. Sadly, what I got not only didn't live up to my expectations, but it was made very poorly. For the cheese, I substituted Provolone cheese. What I got in my sandwich was very little cheese. It was darn near non-existent. The worst part, the meat was cold!!! Maybe I will give the original Saratoga Ave location a try again, but I am definitely not coming back to this Almaden location. read more

San Jose locals swear by this place but anyone who's lived in Philly proper will tell you it doesn't capture the magic of a real cheesesteak. In the strictest sense you are getting shaved beef on a roll with some cheese. But you're still light years away from authentic steak and cheese that east coasters enjoy on the daily. All the components need to be right and it's almost lightning in a bottle. The bread needs to be Amoroso which is a special roll which contains the ingredient amylase. This bread is unique in its ability to absorb juice and flavor and still remain firm on the outside and soft on the inside without being dry and crumbly. The cheese needs to be a combo of cheese sauce and Whiz. All due respect to the workers. Service was great. But if you want something close to the real deal you'll need to head to Jake's in SF. They use Amoroso. Accept no substitutions! read more

Being from the suburbs outside of Philadelphia, I was really excited about trying this place out. However, I was sorely disappointed. The lady at the cash register was surly which kind of added to the Philadelphia experience, I suppose. I ordered the cheesesteak with whiz and my partner and I shared the onion rings. The onion rings were good but the cheesesteak was not what I had expected. The whiz was slapped on top of the meat and not mixed in so some bites had cheese while others didn't. The meat was dry and the bread was cold. I would rather drive into SF Marina for an authentic cheesesteak than to visit this place again. Stopped here for lunch this past week. The staff inside were great. Engaged with the customers and made recommendations. For the meal we ordered the chicken Philly. With mushroom onion bellpepper with wiz. The food comes out hot made to order. It was nice seeing steam coming of a meal. My chicken Philly lacked a bit of flavor and was a bit on the bland side. Amato's continues to impress. The cheese steaks are authentic. The fries are hot and crispy. Ask nicely and they will even run your sandwich next door to The Office, so you can have a beer with your meal. Staff is efficient, but always friendly. Such nice people. My son ordered from the wrong location so I started at the Saratoga Ave store closer to us before coming all the way down here to pick up. And then this location was out of eggs so they'd canceled the #33 Pepper & Egg which was for me and is my fave. Rather than go all the way back to Saratoga Ave where I started (where they had eggs), for another vegetarian option they suggested the Veggie Works. This sandwich isn't on the main menu but is on DoorDash and by request - and then they comped it which they totally didn't have to do because it was our mistake. The Veggie Works had all the fixins from their signature The Works sandwich but without the meat. Was amazing! Problem solved and crisis averted. We have come to Amatos for years and always knew it was a family affair but was pleasantly surprised to see this little cutie working along side her step mom and dad for the day. She took our order perfectly, was very polite and clearly knew what she was doing. I was highly impressed. So Amato's not only has amazing food but they're also nurturing and bringing in the next generation. I was told she's been working the register since she was 5! Everyone who's been here knows their food is the best Philly cheesecake you can get in all of California. So I don't think I need to rave about the food because IFKYK. Picked up a couple of cheesesteaks & onion rings in early July. Hadn't had it a few years so I was looking forward to it. When I first walked in there was one person in line. I waited behind them, once they were done ordering I said I was there to pick up an order. I got nothing from the "more mature" lady behind the counter. No, hello, we're working on your order, nothing. I paid and waited. The cook was no better, both seemed like they hated being there, and that everyone was bothering them. I don't need you to thank me profusely for coming in, but damn. Now to the food... Unfortunately the meat on both sandwiches was very bland. The cheese saved it, but c'mon this is your SPECIALTY. I don't get over here often enough, but everytime I do I'm reminded it's probably the best sandwich joint this side of town. It starts with the bread, and it's always been a tasty roll in the almost two decades I've been coming here. Don't roll your eyes at the prices, because even the Shorty size is more than enough for a big huge meal. It's been probably a decade since I could attempt anything larger. Amato's claims (on their website and in their ads) that they make "THE BEST CHEESE STEAKS IN TH WORLD!" I don't know if that's true - I haven't tried them all. But they certainly make a great cheesesteak, probably the best I've ever had. It's an unpretentious place, a little run down, located in a strip mall, but it draws a big crowd of regulars. Once you try it, you'll understand why. The counter service is personal and friendly. If you have questions about the menu, just ask! And if you're not a cheesesteak aficionado, when they ask "with or without?" - they are talking about fried onions. Everything is made fresh, and the sandwiches are great! Besides lots of cheesesteak variations, they've got a bunch of hoagies, sausage sandwiches, meatball sandwiches and more. The sandwiches are BIG and FILLING, so go for the small.
