We visited Amar very eagerly and left very satisfied. Being that they have only been open for 2 days when we visited, the food and drinks were very thought through and cohesive. Service could be ironed out, but that is expected given the newness of everything
We ordered the ceviche carabiño to start, which was an interesting start given that the fish was not prepared like a traditional ceviche, there were chunks. The menu did not indicate what type of fish was in the dish, but nonetheless, it was tasty. The bright flavors of the included tomato and fruit elevated the fish. The avocado was a nice addition to cut the acidity. Moving on to the mains, we both ordered a taco and a specialty dish. I ordered the tamale with marlin and mole along with the avocado taco (vegetarian). Both were prepared very well and had bright (taco), deep (mole) flavors. I saw no flaws within these dishes. We also ordered the chocolate cake which was very good, and resembled the consistency of a flourless chocolate cake with the fruit sauce (raspberry?) being the highlight of the dish.
Drinks were excellent, we both ordered mezcal forward drinks given the nature of the restaurant, and were pleasantly surprised. We finished the night with a carajillo, which was my personal favorite as it was prepared table side (ask for that).
Overall, Amar is a great concept and I will be coming back after some time to see how they have grown. The menu stated that it was only for a two day period, I assume they are going to be evolving greatly within these next few weeks to see how things go.
My biggest criticism would be where we were seated. There is a small section in the back of the restaurant where the bathrooms are located with 4 two top tables, one of which we were seated at, and a large table (10+) in the very back. Having the tables back here made things very awkward for passerby's needing to go to the bathroom and our server trying to maneuver between others needing to be sat. We saw 3 people being offered the two top next to us and refusing it to sit in the main dining area. This is once again a growing pain I'm sure, but one I hope they fix. read more
