I was in San Antonio for a conference and stayed at a hotel close to Lowcountry. It was fabulous. This is a dive bar in a 100+ year old house, which gives it a lot of character and a unique feel. The drinks are great and the prices are even better. It is near the River Walk but not on it. I found Lowcountry when searching for bars in San Antonio that sold pickled eggs. FYI, they don't anymore. I stuck up a conversion with Payton the bartender and they have not sold them for some time. Payton was super nice. You can get a bourbon and mini Miller High Life for $6. If you are looking for a laid-back spot with excellent value, Lowcountry is it. read more

Came in on my birthday with my BF just to get away from my family after a birthday lunch. Walked in and immediately felt some cool vibes going on here. I love how quaint and home-y Lowcountry feels. The bar is super cool and dark looking - I love it. There is a variety of craft cocktails you can choose from here so take your pick or default to the house sangria. Back patio is pretty awesome but small so if you have a big party it may be better for you to be inside where you can seat 6-8 people in the room right by the restroom. The front room was spacious yet romantic with the mantel and the pews off against the wall. Cool art! I thought I saw a Daniel Johnston piece but I wasn't 100% sure. Best thing about Lowcountry? The view of the Tower of the Americas from their front patio. Off in the distance can you marvel at a 1968 World Fair structure that is amazingly still standing and operating in San Antonio. Lowcountry - you da best! Also side note - I heard that many traveling bands and local bands come play here at Lowcountry. Just when you thought that the only things to check out in San Antonio are the Alamo and Tex-Mex food on the River Walk, lo and behold a delicious bar serving high-quality concoctions inside a residential-home-converted bar. Returned to Low Country with high expectations as I gave it a 5 star review 3 years ago when we visited. One hit wonder....first visit was awesome second visit was fine. Just fine. This hole-in-the-wall bar is the newest addition to Southtown's coolest speakeasy-type bars. Lowcountry is a tiny converted home, consisting of about three rooms, so things can either be insanely packed, or completely dead. It's hard to find it at a comfortable number of people. But it is a good place to go to hear some live music. The old house gives acoustics unlike any other venue in town. The place is so small, that if you need to squeeze by to go to the restroom, or get another beer, you're going to have to walk through the middle of the band. In fact, if you want to dance, you'll probably be grinding at least one member of the band. The drinks are delicious and imaginative. They've got the regular beers, as well as a few really great craft beers. Beer is cheap, $3 for Lone Star, which goes even cheaper during HH. They offer champagne for $3/glass all day, every day. Not too shabby! The bartenders are great, incredibly friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable about their drinks, and want to make sure that they get it right. The decor is interesting. It seems like they didn't change much since this was an old house off of Durango Street. There's a piece of art with the coordinates 29N 33W, or something to that effect. If you look it up, it's off the coast of S. Carolina. I have no idea what that means. There's a front, and a back patio area, where things get a bit less cramped. This place is not ADA compliant. They have a handicapped elevator in the back, but it seemed inoperable and covered with empty beer cans. Granted, most of those beer cans were mine. I want to start out by saying this bar isn't for everyone. Not everybody is going to like it, it is smaller than most, and if you have a goo band playing it'll be hard to find a seat inside. The patio however is spacious, and the drinks are so, so, good. It is a cocktail bar, though they do offer some bottled beers and wine. They have a cocktail menu that is written daily, so it's always changing. while some might be disappointed to find that a drink they liked one day, isn't on the menu the next, I think it's what makes the bar so great. Variety is the spice of life after all! This really is your friendly neighborhood bar, the bartenders are all quite experienced and are pulled in from bars all over the city. if you frequent the bar scene, and frequent this bar, it will quickly become like cheers, where "everyone will know your name." There is frequently live music playing, either in doors or outside depending on the weather. The ambiance is great, on the patio you can see the Tower of the Americas. The inside perfectly captures a balance between divey and classy, intimate and friendly. Lowcountry is a super chill, secluded, hideaway. Bartender was kind and helpful. I'd never been there before and he seem happy to tell me about their house cocktails. The clientele was, from what I could see, 20s to mid 30s. LGBTQ+ friendly, I'm a cis woman, but it's important to know, if you want to ensure your money goes to good people. My only reason for not give 5 stars is that the outdoor seating is not very comfortable, but it's not that big a deal. Oh, please be smarter than me. If you park across the street, its pay to park. I didnt know that, or see a sign. There was NO machine to pay or someone in a kiosk, so...I'm contesting it. Anyway, find out where and who you're supposed to pay. I am definitely going back, maybe take an Uber next time, avoid parking all together. EDIT-I just want to make perfectly clear, my parking issue has nothing to do with Lowcountry. I had high hopes when I saw this bungalow-turned bar. I like simple places and the words across the front, "Beer Boiled Peanuts Cocktails" sounded enticing, so I went out of the way to try the place. Granted we walked in soon after their opening time (4 PM), but he bartender looked at us as if we were intruding. We asked if we could have boiled peanuts. No, they didn't have any (really? You're advertising 3 things and you don't have one of them?) They did have beers. It was obvious that conversation with the staff was not part of the deal, so we sat and chatted among ourselves while we drank our beers. No real hospitality or smiles, no conversation to be had. The fact that the bar stays open until 2 and is across the street from the Marriott must help them stay in business. They don't seem to appreciate that business however. This place has an opportunity to be friendly and welcoming but they are blowing it. After ordering drinks from a female bar tender (did not get her name) I went back to the bar a few minutes later to ask for a couple of water, I kid you not, I waited patiently for about five minutes while she just BS with her friend, not giving me the time of day. Lowcountry is a tiny hole-in-the-wall bar. Which I would normally love but usually at a bar that seats maybe 12 comfortably, there's an added warmth that comes with it. In my first and last visit, Lowcountry was damn right icy. Met up with a group of 4 as the bar was opening. Walking in I thought, that's it? It really is just two rooms, the seating area which has random chairs and church pew benches and the bar which has no seating. Cozy. If this sounds like an indictment on Lowcounty's size, it's not. I'm a big fan of the odd camaraderie that happens when strangers drink in a close setting. The bar menu is written on the walls and after giving our order to a bartender that looked like he either didn't like us or was just super green at customer service, we took our seat. It was blustery outside (in SA speak, it was windy and 40) so we chose a corner furthest away from the door. A group of women, who I assume were the owners/managers because they weren't there for funsies, kept coming in and out of the bar and never fully closing the door. We must have gotten up at least four times to shut the door after them because like I said, freezing. So a cold reception followed by quickly drinking a hot toddy too heavy on the lemon so we could go some place that was at least 60 degrees inside. With all the other options on S. Alamo, there's nothing here to lure me back. read more
