If you want fine dining for an affordable price and amazing view, go to Altius. The staff offer exceptional service and are meticulous and accommodating. The window seats set a great scenery for your dining experience. I would have given this restaurant a 5/5, however I was a bit disappointed by the food. Although the portions are certainly huge and extraordinarily well priced, the taste was above average at best. The braised lamb was not as savory and instead was a bit too creamy and slightly bitter. Likewise, the crab bisque was a bit too salty. The Heron Point Crab Toast was definitely on point, I definitely recommend trying it. Went to celebrate my friend's birthday. This was the perfect place! The Amuse Bouche was amazing. Cream of potato leek that I could have eaten as my entree. Next was truffled cauliflower soup with a steamed lobster tail. Grab this while you can! Dinner was sea bass and salmon. The sea bass was crispy on top and then melted in your mouth. WOW! Altius really was the ultimate dining experience. Last night, a family friend was in town, so of course I wanted to take us somewhere to enjoy the view! I was able to make us a reservation on Monday morning for Monday evening, but the restaurant did fill up even during the week, so I would definitely recommend a reservation! Our waitress, Angie, certainly contributed to the wonderful experience. She was wonderful throughout the entire evening. Starting with a bottle of wine, we paired that with the charcuterie and the warm spinach salad as well as the wedge salad. The charcuterie was excellent and came with may accoutrements that really made it. We were also treated to two lovely amuse bouches, both of which were fabulous and we enjoyed snacking on. For the main course, we both enjoyed the strip steak. It was fabulous and paired with delicious vegetables. Of course, we had to finish off with the cookies and cream dessert and espresso, which was as good as everything else! With the view and the food, I can't recommend Altius enough! read more

Altius has warmed its way into my heart due to the exemplary service for dinner tonight for my 30th birthday, but also because the food is stellar. One of my top favorite meals in Pittsburgh, hands down. We had an early reservation (5:30), you need to book at least a month in artificial you want to eat around 7pm or so, and were seated right away. We received the complimentary Dill Pickle Popcorn as we sat and perused all the options, and immediately knew were in for a tasty tour. First up, the fresh bread. Tonight our selections were house made focaccia, croissant and baguette. We had a combo of all three between the two of us and all were amazing. The appetizers: the girlfriend got the Herron Crab toast and the bread was warm and topped with so much delicious crab pieces. I had the Korean Salmon Poké which was very refreshingly tasty as well. But even before that, we got an Amouse Bouche of Salmon Mouse with chives in a "fancy bugle chip" which blew our minds. After a comfortable pause came out our amazing main courses: Hers was the duck ravioli (which was excellent) and mine the Veal tenderloin which was so tender and complimented excellently by the mushroom, sauce and gnocchi. Then came my birthday surprise vanilla bean crepe brûlée which was very nice. For desert after that we had the chocolate and peanut butter/ caramel decadence known as "The King". Oh and it came with candied bacon. Overall a 5 star meal and service. My only minor complaint is the lights seemed to be fading and getting brighter too fast, like they were on a malfunctioning timer. read more

The view from Altius atop Mt. Washington is simply incredible -- and we got a front window seat overlooking the three rivers and downtown Pittsburgh in its full glory. After a quick nap at the hotel, I was ready for some dinner! And it didn't disappoint. The food was as good as the surroundings. Besides eating (a lot!) of the bread, they brought out some popcorn before our entrees arrived. I'm not sure I've ever seen that at any restaurant (but I'm a fan!). The chicken breast was tasty. They offer dessert for your birthday, which is a nice thing though not all that impressive compared to some other higher-end establishments (just 3 pieces of chocolate, some berries and a scoop of whipped cream). Another quirky feature of the restaurant are the lights that flicker on and off. Altius shares the same power source as the Duquesne Incline, located just outside the restaurant. The incline still operates its original, ornate wooden cable cars dating back to around 1877. For full effect, be sure to ride the incline to get to the restaurant. read more

we have wanted to go here since it opened, but life has kept us away until now. it was don & deb's anniversary, & they wanted to celebrate a little, so they asked us to join them! they know we like to try new places, & spend a little money now & again. they don't go out much. deb made the reservations. when she called me to give me the details, yes, we actually talk to 1 another, & on landlines!, she made a point of telling me there was a dress code. we were both happy to hear that as it's, at least my, pet peeve. we have been out, dressed up, & the the folks next to us are in jeans & tennies. i told her to ask for a table by the window. she did, but was told they don't normally do that, why were we coming. deb told her for their anniversary. well, we'll see what we can do. the day came. it was a picture perfect, literally. we had to wait until 4 before they would let us in. the valet took our car, so we had to stand outside. no biggie, but i had heels on, darn it! lol! we were seated right at the middle window! the decor was nice, but it must be old because the cording on my cushion was ripped. our waitress was wonderful. she was very attentive to our needs. we all ordered some drinks & she got them to us with some popcorn to try. sorry, i don't remember the flavor, but i can say, we all, did not care for it! next, she brought us some bread with 2 spreads. the bread was delish! the tomato spread was the winner for us too! next we got our apps. tom got the oysters, i got a crab toast, & don & deb shared a crab toast. we enjoyed every last bit of them! they were so tasty. my problem was, for $25, i expected a little more than a tablespoon of crabmeat on 2 pieces of bread. it was really good tho! dinner, the boys both got the halibut, deb got the filet, & i went with the special-a 12-oz. ribeye. the guys would have licked their plates clean if they had been at home! lol! deb, who is a small person, & eats like a bird, ate her whole meal! she didn't like her carrots tho. her filet had some maitre d'hotel butter melted over it. i too, got the maitre d'hotel butter on my ribeye. however, it was not melted, it was still hard. the steak looked great. i started to cut into it. there was so much gristle, i ended up leaving about 1/2 of it. had i been alone, maybe i would have tried harder. so disappointing. i liked the carrots, but didn't like the feta tahini dip. i got the chocolate medley. the waitress brought don & deb a couple of brownies with happy anniversary on them. tom just had coffee. my medley was eh, the piece of "cake" tasted stale. for $16, not impressed. don & deb were so touched by the gesture. while we were there, many more people came in, the place was full. we started noticing how they were dressed. apparently, the rule is for just some people. we saw ripped jeans, jog pants, slides. deb was upset by it. i mean, what the heck! we each got a brownie in a bag to take home at the end. the next day, tom gave me the receipt so i could remember everything we got. i looked at it. my gristly steak cost $80! what?! i definitely would have brought home the remains! obviously, i should have asked for the price, but i figured it was around the same price as the other steaks. so, my crab toast $25, my ribeye $80, sauteed mushrooms $5, dessert $16. $126 for me, not including wine & sparkling water. i could go to ALOT of other places for that kind of money. you're paying for the view. read more

I came here with my boyfriend for my Twenty-Second Birthday. The entire experience was an A+!! The location, view, and atmosphere is very beautiful and very upscale. We arrived a bit before our reservation and were able to sit at the bar area and enjoy amazing cocktails, from an awesome bar selection. The bartender was very personable and informative. He helped us choose our drinks and was very sweet and entertaining. The staff was extremely attentive, helpful, and intelligent. Our waiter (I cannot remember his name) was amazing! One of the best that I have had in the city. I had the most amazing salmon with capers and amazing sides. My boyfriend had an amazing lamb dish. They gave us a customized dessert for my Birthday and recommended a bunch of different drinks and food items. We will definitely return!! read more

While the view is extraordinary and the food and wine are superb, I have a very big problem with Altius and thus the 3 star service rating. The server recommended a seafood special (3 shrimp, 2 scallops over crab risotto) which sounded delicious and was, but imagine my surprise when the bill arrived and the entree was $70! Do fine dining restaurants think it's tacky to mention the price? Is it up to the diner to ask before ordering? I clearly would never have ordered it had I known the $ ahead of time. It turned out to be the most expensive item on the menu (along with a $70 filet mignon). I think it's important for the restaurant to mention the price ahead of time, not blindsiding the customer at the end of the night. read more

The only reason I give this place a one star review is because when I called to ask the manager to change my reservation by 45 minutes, he hung up on me! I work at a University and many of my professors/distinguished guests patronize Altius. To refuse to accommodate diners by a small fraction of time is bad enough; but when the Manager (Rob) hangs up on a customer, that is the ultimate ignorance and unprofessionalism. After much consideration, I chose Altius to celebrate my 30th birthday. I have no regrets! I'm born in December, so I know how important valet is. And they have it! I am a also big appreciator of coat check. Which they have! When we first walked in the doors, the hostess greeted us first which is a pleasant difference from usual restaurants. Since we had reservations, the table was ready to go and we were greeted with popcorn and a great view. Of course you have probably already read all about that so I will not focus on that too much. But I can confirm! The view is great! Everyone is very attentive, not just your server. So you are definitely taking care of here. I appreciate that they don't just bring the basket of bread to the table, they have like a 'bread waiter' going around giving you fresh bread as needed. That's not even the least of it, there's so many other examples of how they just are so attentive. Instead of listing them off, I think the important thing is to mention that yes you are taken care of here. The building is very unassuming, but once you go in it is easily the fanciest restaurant I have been to. I have no regrets going here, and if I need to go somewhere special again and I'm in Pittsburgh this is the place. read more

We went to Altius last night. It has been on our go to list for a long time and it was amazing. Our waiter Chris elevated the experience and was top notch. The view of downtown is beautiful and while we weren't at a coveted window seat we had a good obstructed view of the city. We started with cocktails. Their cocktail is small. They can make anything but their crafted cocktails were what we were after. We started with a Sip with a views which is a bourbon based cocktail and it will warm you up on a windy chilly night for sure and the Snowbird which is floral and light. They start you off with craft popcorn which was full ranch and I could taken it all home with me. We started with the amuse bouche which was a truffled leek and potato bisque shooter. It was rich, earthy and the perfect starter. Then we had the meatball appetizer which came with 3 tennis ball sized meatballs filled with cheese and they were seasoned perfect and delicious. We moved on to the dinner course my husband had the duck which he said was perfectly cooked, and I had the tomahawk pork chop it was flavorful and tender. For dessert I had the chocolate bourbon ball Cocktail and the Gianduja Mousse and my husband had the coconut sticky rice and the wake up call. My dessert and drink were hand down the winners of the night. They finish the meal with a cookie bar to take home and it was the best meal I've had in a long time and we will be back!! read more

A stunning city view, delicious food, instagram-worthy plating, attentive service and classy ambience all in one restaurant experience! Even if you don't get a seat right next to the window, the restaurant is like a fish bowl and you still get a fantastic view of the city lights. The service is wonderful, attentive and knowledgeable. The food is tasty, with dessert being my favorite part (disclaimer: I have a sweet tooth). - the appetizers were amazing, from the crab to the tartare to the charcuterie board (definite recommend), and packed flavor in small bites - I will say if I have anything a 4 star about this place, it'd be the entrees. The serving sizes were good. We got the bass and the pork chop, which were both a little over cooked though well seasoned. - the desserts were like artwork and complex with texture variety. The pumpkin and the espresso chai panna cotta were spot on. read more

We ordered the charcuterie board for an app, and for a main meal we ordered a chicken breast plate and lamb chops. The plates are large portions and they offer bread and pop corn continuously throughout the meal. Make sure to leave room for dessert, we had a vanilla cake that was so fluffy and sweet! The food is wonderful, service impeccable, ambience among the best in our city, and everything runs so efficiently and professionally. Tom took very good care of us as we worked our way through the Steak Tartare, Caesar Salad, Tomahawk porkchop, and then the Creme Brule. Delicious. Can't wait until our next dinner there. read more

We had heard good things about this restaurant so we booked a table 6 weeks early to celebrate 2 special birthdays. Requested a window table but was told they couldn't guarantee our request. Only to arrive and find several 4 top tables with 2 people so we were Very disappointed. Our server was very good. Our food was Luke warm and all portions were very small for the price.The martini was 1/2 full and in a small glass and took a very long time to receive all beverages. Altius easily wins across the board in comparison to Vue 412. Just take my word on it - if you really don't believe me you can look for my Vue 412 review. I came here for my girlfriends birthday, and we enjoyed the experience. On the reservation indicate that the occasion is for a bday and they will provide a small vanilla cake bday cake with a happy bday sign made out of white chocolate, which actually tasted really good. For appetizers we had the oysters as well as two drinks - clover club & pim's cup. The drink menu seems to constantly be changing but the drinks looked aesthetic and were well mixed. The real sleeper was the zucchini bread. They go around offering three types of bread to choose from, and I chose the zucchini bread among recommendation which was deliciously made - sweet, warm, and soft. More of a dessert bread but a must try. I ordered the lamb chops while my girlfriend got the alaskan halibut, which was lightly breaded and came with a side of string beans which were so good. The texture was on point and beans were really sweet. Both entrees were extremely tasty, nothing really to complain about for those. Well worth the experience, but I am giving four stars because it wasn't anything too spectacular. Maybe part of the reason is because I tried Eleven the night after, which I personally liked better but in terms of restaurants on Mt Washington this is a solid option. read more

OVERALL: lovely atmosphere and service, but entrees were a bit lackluster. Try to come at a not super busy time to guarantee your window seat. I came here for Valentine's Day weekend right before the kitchen closed at 9pm, and was immediately seated. It was completely full, but I asked if we could switch to a window seat if one opened up, and our waiter was very helpful in moving us to very private corner on the 2nd floor. I came here mostly for the view, so it was a fantastic addition to my evening. We ordered the charcuterie with the foie gras addition, which was a bit pricey but would definitely recommend getting the foie gras with it, even though it's an extra $15-20 (?). The waiter also explained what everything was on the plate, which was nice because there were a ton of different meats/spreads/cheeses. However, I was pretty disappointed with my pork chop. I thought it wasn't very flavorful, and even though the portion was a good size, the meat wasn't tender. Anyway, I'd come here for the experience and charcuterie alone, but I probably wouldn't come back again on my next visit to Pittsburgh. read more
