I understand that businesses have had unreal pressures and challenges since the pandemic and with the current state of the economy, and that people are stressed. However, I cannot in good conscious recommend Alterations Express in East Liberty. I dropped off a skirt about 5 months ago and was told, "you have 6 months to pick it up". When I came to pick it up the first time, 5 months later, the person working behind the desk called for the next person in line (me) and when I walked up to the counter, they looked past me and checked with the man behind me that I didn't just cut them. The whole vibe was very jarring after that and the person working the counter wouldn't make eye contact with me or address me. Then, when they handed me back my skirt the bottom wasn't hemmed or finished. We had communicated that I wanted it tapered, and if we didn't liked how that looked on its own, we would shorten it. The folks working there insisted I wanted the hem left undone, which isn't true. I tried on my skirt, hem undone, and waited for 20 minute for them to come back and work with me to see if we wanted to hem it or not. After checking with them when I was going to be seen, and met with rude and snide remarks about them being busy, I decided to leave and asked them to fix the hem and be done with it. I had to make another trip back for my skirt at this point, which was super inconvenient. When I went back, a different person working there made really snide comments like "oh you're finally coming to pick this up? The skirt practically lives here now", and she was overall really snappy with me. Again, I get that places are understaffed and stressed but don't take it out on your customers. Don't blame your customers for miscommunication about the clothing you're supposed to fix. I won't be returning and hope to find somewhere with more staffing in place and better customer service. read more

Joyce, who identified herself only by first name ad the manager of the East Liberty location, may be a fantastic seamstress but her managerial and customer service skills are quite questionable. Upon entering the store today, there was already a line of 7 people and I made the 8th. There was a single cashier with plenty of chatter coming from the back. I stood and patiently waited. Finally, it was my turn. I approached the counter and told Joyce there were 3 items that I needed worked on. I explained there was a leather vest that needed patches sewn on, a ripped dress and a bridesmaid dress that needed full alterations. She immediately tried to usher me to the side room. I spoke up and asked her why cant the other issues be addressed prior. She told me they like to do everything at once. Knowing that the other two items did not require a try on before repair, this made zero sense to me. But I followed directions. Once the bridesmaid dress was on, I flipped the light. The once very busy cashier came inside. She informed me that the East Liberty location is too busy to handle the type of alteration I needed and advised me to go to Warrendale. Never mind the fact that the Warrendale location is quite far in comparison, this was not listed on the website and had Joyce simply asked what type of alteration was needed it could have been avoided altogether. I get dressed and now there is 9 people in line and Joyce is m.i.a. As Im standing in line, another woman exits the dressing rooms and stands at the other counter. I exit the line assuming I was in the wrong spot. As I approach, I clarify with Joyce that if we were already in the room that we could just stand right there. She proceeded to tell me no and that I would need to go back to the end of the line. I then reminded her, that is the reason why I asked, before she even sent me back there if my other issues could be handled. She got snippy with no accountability in her failure to properly manage long lines while under pressure. I got my wedding dress, my daughters dress and two bridesmaid dresses completed here with no issues. But today was a terrible experience! Joyce may be an amazing seamstress but she needs retrained on managerial procedures and customer service. Or, it may be time for her to "hang it up." read more

Not only did I have to stand for over an hour in line like it's the DMV to get in the room to be measured by the tailor, but then after all of that and telling three people there specifically that I wanted a cuff put into my expensive new dress pants, they still just did a regular hem with no cuff and cut too much material off so now I can't even get a cuff put in by a better alterations place. This is going back a few years but I can't see how any establishment that did such fantastic work on my Navy uniform drop down to 1-3 stars, sounds to me like a few cases of sour grapes. Back to my story: Its 2015, my favorite ship I served on, USS IOWA BB-61, our Veterans Association is holding a reunion on the Queen Mary out in Long Beach and a lot of the guys are going to "attempt" to wear their uniforms including myself. Getting into my original CPO uniform was a non starter as I'd picked up a few pounds.....so my Son & I paid a visit to the uniform resale stores in the Norfolk area while on business. I found a Brooks Bros. jacket for $25 and a pair of pants for $7.50...what luck. I'm the type that goes "all in" when it comes to my uniforms so I special ordered a gold thread and silver bullion Chief Electricians Mate rating badge at $58 and a set of six(6) gold thread "hashmarks" for my sleeve. additionally, I had to order a new white button down shirt as my original had yellowed with age (uniform last worn in Nov.1999) and this one arrived with epaulettes (new style, not mine)......Where to go ?.....Alterations Express yell my wife and Daughter....so out to you we go (from Bloomfield). I couldn't've been more pleased, you stood me on a platform and went to work.....shirt measured & marked; pants marked for hemming and "seat tailoring"; jacket measured, marked for alteration to include the removal of two Midshipmen stripes and the addition of my hashmarks & rating badge precisely to Navy specs. An older seamstress called some of the younger ladies over and explained as she showed them my "gold & silver how this was to be done, why, and the meaning of each of those badges......every one of those ladies thanked me for my service and started to fire questions at me wanting to know everything from "what's it like at sea" to "would you ever do it again".....I would gladly. All your work was spot on perfect...the sleeves, epaulette removal, pants hem, and the jacket work was/is absolutely superb.....couldn't've been done better if it was done on the Naval Base in their tailor shop......hashmarks perfect, rating badge perfect and not at all tarnished by the cleaning process. Long story, not so short but pertinent. I have another reunion coming up next month, this time a Norwegian Cruise Line trip on the Harmony of the Seas out of Galveston, TX. My uniform still fits perfectly, all it needs is a little "freshening up" in the dry cleaner and I'll be seeing you folks next week to get 'er done. I only wish I had some photos to add. She was so rude. Didn't know how to deal with customers. When they made a mistake for the first time, the older lady with short hair came out and apologized and explained the situation so nicely. Overpriced. Poor quality. Terrible customer service. DO NOT GO HERE! I had the worst experience here. They ruined my formal dress and returned the gown from dry cleaning covered in new stains from their sloppy work TWICE. I had to make 4 separate trips to the store for a singular item because they kept making mistakes. The manager, Rainbow, refused to speak with me at first. And when she finally did, she was completely unapologetic and unhelpful. She offered no refund or discount, despite the fact that she left me without a bridesmaids dress 2 days before the wedding. Rainbow was unprofessional and rude. She is unfit to manage a business or interact with the public. I will never return to this business and I would strongly discourage anyone else from wasting their time or money. I went here for years and the quality has only gone down. I went to the East Liberty location to get my pants hemmed. A very simple alteration. When I received them the hem on the pant was uneven, causing the one leg of the pant to be longer than the other. I returned to the location and explained my complaint. The manager of this location told me that it was not their problem and claimed that my body is most likely lopsided. For consistent mistakes, non-apologies and horrible customer service come here. SEVERAL incidents with this store, and they NEVER APOLOGIZE! - SEWED AN OPEN PIN INTO MY JACKET. Brought a jacket in to get hemmed and received it back, only to find a PIN actually sewed into and buried inside the stitching that stabbed me. I brought it back to the store and they were able to take it out-- and gave NO apology - HEMMED ONE LEG OF THE PANT AND FORGOT TO DO OTHER LEG. Brought a pair of pants in and got them hemmed. The following week when I took them out to wear them, I found that they did one leg only!! Again no apology was offered to me at the store. - LOST PAIR OF PANTS, THEN FOUND, THEN FORGOT TO DO THE WORK. SEVERAL UNKEPT PROMISES TO CALL. I brought another pair of pants to get hemmed. Went back in a few days to pick it up. They said they couldn't find my pants. They said they would call me that day to follow up. She never called. Then following week I went back again. They looked harder and found my pants. They hadn't completed the simple hem job. They said to come back and they would call me when they were ready. Again, no phone call. I went back after another few days to pick up the pants. It was finally done and they GAVE NO APOLOGY! - Finally I complained about the experience I've had with this store, since I had been pretty patient about their terrible service. Stay away! Save your time, frustration and money! We went to have a purchased tux fit/and altered for my son's first prom! They were able to fit us in on the spot, but older lady (Joyce) was rude and condescending. She was annoyed and made comments because we brought Dad and daughter along for support and excitement for my son! We are a close loving supportive family and this is a good thing...well not here! Keep in mind the two support people stood outside of fitting room door, so not in her way!!! I ask Joyce to move button on jacket to give him more room, she said she couldn't. Then, she offered to use the seam in back of jacket to open for more room, so she opened it up...now keep in mind this was a new tux purchased with tags on from JCPenney. She put a hole in back of tux!!!! After opening she said she couldn't do anything to extend the jacket. So, we assumed she would close the hole she made....but no! She told us to come pay, yet when we followed her out to pay she waited on 5 people before us. Then, she told use if we wanted hole she made closed it would cost $10.00 or more!!! Finally, other customers told her to ring us out...and that it wasn't fair we had been waiting!!! When she rang us out she made more comments about us being there as a family! Keep in mind it was only Mom n Dad and sister...not a ton of people!!!! When we contacted the manager (Carrie)she apologized and said she would make it right! So, we expected that to happen! We wanted to give them a chance to make it right. When we go back to pick up tux, the pants are missing, they say, at first, "oh you took them with you" which we didn't they were to be hemmed! No, we show receipt that says they are to hem pants! Then, they eventually found them after an hour, but that was such a waste of time, and scary as prom is this Saturday! The tux shirt was to be pressed, it came back with two stains on the front! (again these were all new items in plastic and with tags from JCPenney prior to Alterations Express!). She offered to clean shirt, but now a third trip back to pick it up, and told us she didn't know if the stain would come out or not! Lesson learned....they don't respect the customer or value them!!! Their apologies were not sincere and they offered s 10% coupon for inconvenience which is offered daily on their site when u sign up for email...so wow...way to go above and beyond for the customer! NOT! Myself, my son, my daughter, my husband (who is a business professional) and my self who is also a business professional will never go back. We need dry cleaning and alterations on a regular basis! Now, everyone we tell at/or around the prom event won't go there either! Tailor/Alteration Services: 5 stars Customer Service: 5 stars I came in this morning with a formal long dress that I needed to get hemmed for an event at 8pm in the evening. I had called many other tailors beforehand and they were unwilling to see me. Here, at Alterations Express - East Liberty, I was seen right away! My dress was a little bit difficult because there was a train and I am incredibly short. I was worried about me tripping over the dress and the dress dragging, which would be terrible since my dress is white, but we found a solution. The tailors there suggested a bustle, where I could still keep the beautiful train but I could tie the train up when I wanted to move easily and dance. I loved this idea and was even more excited when they said it would be completed in 4 hours. I came back, tried on the dress, and loved every bit of it! The attention to detail was amazing! The dress fit like a glove! They asked me to walk and see how the train fell and showed me the bustle and how to tie it. They even offered to change the color of the bustle strings if I didn't like it. The customer service here is beyond incredible and I am so appreciative of the kind and warm staff. Before I left, they bagged my dress for free and I believe steamed the dress as well! My dress was good to go and I cannot wait to show it off at my formal event! I would recommend this place if you want fast yet detail-oriented work done with friendly staff. I would definitely come back again! read more

I've had dresses hemmed and many a pant waists taken in at Alterations Express. The staff have always been attentive to my needs and willing to spend the time to understand what I want in the alteration. The quality of work here is very high, making Alterations Express a great value for the cost. On your first visit, make sure to pick up a loyalty card - after 5 visits, you get a free pant hem or $8 off an alteration. You should also sign up for their VIP list (can be done on their website) and they'll send you coupons via email! Bonus: I've come to Alterations Express about 5 times over the course of a year and a half and **they know my name when I walk in the door.** THAT is customer service that deserves recognition. read more

This place is garbage. I dropped a $300 jumpsuit off for my rehearsal dinner to get a simple hem. I got it back and the hem stitching was embarrassingly awful- completely wavy (an inch to half inch difference) on both legs. I brought it back and even the shop keeper even said "it looks like trash". Simultaneously, a friend had the same issue with her jumpsuit and also had a top lost. Alterations Express provides very reasonably priced, good quality alterations. I've been to a few other alteration places in the Squirrel Hill/Shadyside area and all have been more expensive and did not provide significantly better quality. They also *literally* provide express alterations and can typically have your items ready in two days. I've had to wait at other alteration places for a minimum of two weeks and have paid more. I have had no bad experiences with Alterations Express and have been able to use a coupon (one mailed and one received for signing up for their waitlist) the last two times I had items altered here. read more

I have been returning to Alterations Express for my tailoring and dry-cleaning needs and would like to revise my review as a result of consistently receiving great service from them (and looking quite sartorial too!) I can only comment on dry cleaning and tailoring dress pants or blazer sleeves, and I incredibly happy with the quality of both. The individuals assisting me have been professional, patient, and knowledgeable about helping me decide how best to tailor. They were easily able to save two of my favorite jackets that had broken/jammed zippers. It took them no more than ten minutes, and the price was minimal (less than $10). I had been anticipating needing to drop them off and to spend at least $30, so I was incredibly surprised and impressed. The staff was great and super friendly. Hi today I visited because I found something I need for a trip was torn Snd needed about 15 sewing machine stitches to fix it. I needed it for tomorrow. They advertise same day alterations and even say they will hem pants while I wait. The lady at the desk said I have to ask the manager. Well she haughtily told her no I'd have to wait till the 14th today is the seventh. I am 69 no sewing machine and the material was too thick for hand sewing. As I looked round waiting for the manager I noticed they now do dry cleaning. I thought this would be a good place for my husband to get his done and he has a lot. I very quickly kicked that out of my mind. I guess I was really surprised. I'm so used to helping people my whole life as a social worker and just friend that all I could think was how unhappy that manager must be in life and what a bad business decision. We have 6 dress shirts a week and suits to clean on a regular basis. Now I am stuck. I'm hoping I can find someone else but you can't believe what they advertise read more

This is a damn lie!!! I'm trying to figure out why it is called express when they took almost 3 weeks to fix my dress. When I called they didn't even start it and then couldn't locate it! Told me they would call back... didn't! What started as a positive experience, went quickly downhill when I went to pick up my dress. I went to alterations express to have a gown hemmed for a black tie event. The lady who pinned my dress was friendly and even grabbed help to pin the train (she said she was inexperienced with how to pin the front hem to flow into the train). We chatted about leaving the train and just hemming the front so I wouldn't trip. She pinned the front so I wouldn't step on the dress (it was quite long) and pinned the sides to ease into the train. The back of the dress/train wasn't pinned at all. When I went to pick up my dress, I was devastated to learn that they had completely cut off the train of my gown. This is an Anthropologie gown, is not inexpensive to replace, and I am devastated that they ruined my gown. To add insult to injury: the dress was hemmed with a too tight machine thread which left a harsh line visible from the outside of the garment. Unfortunately, their fix was to hand sew the hem at the same quality I could have achieved myself. Every time I brought up my ruined gown with no train, all I received was "yes we can't fix it I'm sorry". I reached out on their website for a replacement and never heard back. DO NOT take important items here unless you're 100% ok with them being ruined. read more

I am deeply disappointed in this company. It supposedly prides itself on providing the best service to its clients, but as of lately it has unbelievably failed at doing so. I brought in some shirts to be laundered and they were done wrong and shrunk or "contracted" into a size that they were not at the time of original purchase(shirts were worn one time). I was instructed that the products would be replaced if they can't be fixed. The shirts were then put through a process that did not bring them back to their original size, and from there I produced the original receipts for all shirts and was instructed that they would be taking the shirts from me and that they would be replaced and someone would reach out. A few days later I get a call because the owner is stuck on the fact that he fixed them when I'm showing them that they didn't. They now do not want to replace my items but instead want me to wait another month for an investigation over the shirts. This company has lost all of my trust and has treated me unfairly solely for the purpose of not wanting to pay me for shirts they messed up. read more

Unfortunately, I had a not-so-great experience with Alterations Express. I took 4 shirts there to be tailored, and they pinned up 2 on me at the store as model shirts to do tailor the other 2 after. The two that they had actually pinned on me in person were fine, but the 2 they had based on the models were pretty screwed up, and the arms were so tight that I couldn't bend my arms. I'd like to think its from my muscles massively growing after a trip or two to the gym - but lets face it, that's not true. On the plus side, they stood behind their work and refunded me the cost of alterations on the 2 botched shirts, as well as the original cost I had paid to purchase them. I got a check sent in the mail within a few weeks. Sadly, they were on sale at the time of purchase and I couldn't get them at the same price again. Oh well, it was worth a gamble. So, if you're not *super* attached to the clothing you're having altered, it may be worth a shot. The prices are fair and the staff was very friendly when I went in. But, if its a one-of-a-kind irreplaceable item, it may be worth spending a bit more somewhere else. read more
