The work that I got done was very sloppy work. First off she didn't wash my hair right, she left a lot of hair color on my neck after I left. I got home and had to take a shower to wash it off the excess color off my neck, ears and face. Second off she didn't blend the root touch up with my original color, you can clearly see a line from the new color to the old color. I expected great work for the reviews on here but it was a great disappointment, very sloppy work and never going back. read more

I was in the area for work and had nothing to do for the day so I decided to treat myself to a "real" haircut. I say that because I've been super lazy about my hair and usually end up getting a semi bad haircut from a chain salon once every year (if that). Found this place on Yelp and saw the great reviews plus a deal where you pay $37 for $50 worth of a service. Found the place super easy and was greeted as soon as I walked in. Everyone at the front desk was super friendly and they even offered me a drink (I've never been to a fancy salon haha). I was a walk in and they were able to schedule me right away. They set me up to get my hair done by Maggie (Maggy?) and she was awesome! I told her how I wanted my hair cut and she followed up with a few questions to make sure she cut it exactly how I wanted it. I really liked that because getting your hair cut can be a big deal! I was surprised at how fast she cut my hair, but maybe the time just went by quickly because we were taking the whole time haha. She was really friendly and super easy to make conversation with. I was super happy with the end result of my hair! The place is beautiful, a great set up and everyone is so friendly and helpful! I'm a natural red head and I wanted to just get highlights and accentuate my natural color. The first thing I told my colorist was that I DID NOT WANT TO BE BLONDE. My biggest hair fear was getting bleached. She then proceeded to do a full balayage despite me specifically asking not to do a full one because she said she "liked doing it" and then when it was done and looked nothing like the pictures I asked her to fix it and this is when she started adding bleach to my whole head. I now have ugly streaks all throughout my hair. Platinum blonde because she forgot about me for 25 minutes with the bleach on my hair. My natural hair is completely ruined and they tried to charge me for this. I told them no and they insisted they wanted me to come in to fix it but still pay and finally gave up when I continued refusing. Additionally, the chairs are single handedly the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE THINGS EVER. Idk who designed them but horrible choice. My 2 hour appointment ended up being nearly 5 hours and my hair is quite literally ruined now and all they had to say was "goodluck on your hair journey" read more

I was a new customer (or trying to be). I called 23 hours before my appointment to reschedule instead of 24 hours and they would not work with me AT ALL. They insisted on charging me HALF of the total fee of a haircut ($38)! I begged to for them to please work with me and I was completely refused. Beware of this salon. The worst experience of my life! You go, sit, stylist washes your hair, blow dry and says, oh you know what? I can't do justice to what you are asking tonight. Come tomorrow!! Like seriously? Okay so, Alter Ego might have the best of stylists it was apparently the miss communication with the front desk (or that's what I was told)! I made an appointment for full color and cut (even filled their form which basically asks what I want) I was asked to come around 7.15pm. I reached on time, met the stylist and he said, he can't color my hair... I was obviously shocked (as I had appointment for both cut and color) but without wasting time I said, let's get started with the cut. He nicely washed my hair, blow dried it and said he can't even cut! I was like what??$?$?$ Firstly, why did you waste my time? All you could have done was, made a call saying you can't take me in. I would have made my arrangements... Now, end of the day you are telling me, you can't do anything? I was looking forward to this appointment... well, yes I could wait not a big deal. Right? But if it's your special day the next day and you are excited to get a makeover, isn't it a bummer? I don't know if I will visit Alter Ego again. B'coz whatevr happend wasn't professional at all. It could be the internal conflict with the management or whatever! A stylist have the power to make people feel good. I'm so disappointed, left the place with teary eyes! i would give this salon 6 stars if I could! I'm brand new to Durham/Raleigh, recently had a baby and wanted something totally different. I called Alter Ego just to get pricing and Monica answered. she was very informative and friendly. she set my appointment and gave me a general price range so I would know what to expect to pay. the salon is bright, clean and very modern looking. when I arrived, I was greeted warmly by the front desk ladies and checked in right away. I only had to wait a few minutes and Meredith came right over to get me. we talked for 15 minutes or so about what I wanted and my past with hair care. she really made me feel like she wanted to know EVERYTHING I've done to my hair to ensure the best results. after 4 or 5 hours, my hair is 9 inches shorter and has a beautiful burgundy balayage. she absolutely knocked it out of the park! I couldn't be happier with the results. it helps that Meredith is extremely friendly, we talked about life, family, relationships and just about everything else. she is a doll. i ended up paying exactly what i was quoted, not including tip of course. when I left, they even gave me a "thank you" gift with mini sized color safe shampoo and conditioner. After 2 years of miserably failed cuts that left me with no other option but to hide my haircut by pinning my hair up in a schoolteacher bun every day, I finally have my hair back! I wear my hair completely natural - no styling products, no hairdrying, no flat or curling iron - so it's vital that I get a great cut that will style itself. Now, my hair is not the easiest to cut; not only is it about 40% gray (which makes hair far more coarse and wiry), it's also wavy/curly and thicker on top than at the ends. Yelp LOVES this place, and I have to say it was a really beautiful space where I was welcomed and handed a PBR - doesn't get much better than this! Meghann more than delivered. She asked all the right questions: Do I straighten occasionally, which way to I want my hair to fall, how do I want it to frame my face, how long should the layers be, etc. etc. We chatted on and off, with comfortable silences in between, until - voila! - the finished product emerged. We carefully reviewed the different layers and textures and lengths, and after consulting she tweaked a bit here and there. The end result? It was beautiful! I've lived with the cut almost a month now, and I'm still elated. It falls perfectly, my curls just sproing up on their own with almost no scrunching, and it frames my face perfectly. I can already tell it's going to grow out beautifully. Meghann, if you're reading this, thank you a hundred times over! I love that I can wear my hair down now and it looks so great all on its own! Cliff's Notes: My last salon began to suck, so I dumped them and decided to give Alter EGO a shot. I figured, at worst, it'd be a one-night stand, but Dana, my new stylist, took my input and gave me a haircut I'd happily pay three times as much for. I've been going there for four months. Not Cliff's Notes: My last salon ... stopped being consistent, and then, for whatever reason, put me in the trash bin. Whatever stylist I was using would be fine on the first visit, and that was enough for them; subsequent visits would involve me bringing in a picture of what I wanted, and they'd smile, nod, and I'd walk out looking like Steven Jan Vander Ark, the receipt complete with a beefed-up price tag because the librarian thing came about *after* I'd tried to get them to fix what they'd done to me initially. The breakup was much-delayed, but it eventually came. They didn't even notice. Well, good for them. So, after knowing about Alter EGO for years, I was still hesitant. The place screams "edge" and all I wanted was a messy pixie cut. What was I getting myself into? Then, I figured, what the hell. Even though I wanted a conservative or classic haircut, at least they wouldn't let me walk out looking like a 1940s grandmother. Dana gave me the worst haircut of my life last January. I held off on writing a review until today when I finally was able to get a decent hair cut without having an awkward chunk of hair on my left side that was two inches shorter than the rest of my hair! I've been working with stylists throughout the year getting frequent trims and it still looked awkward... 10 months later! My hair reached the top of my breasts and I asked Dana for a trim with a layered cut tapered into the back. She cut my hair exactly into a mullet with the longest layer maybe an inch from my shoulder with this awkward front chunk touching my mid-ear. She completely misunderstood my hair type and thickness and just really messed up my hair. I cried for a week. The only redeeming thing for this salon is I called and said I was unhappy and they set me up with another stylist the next day.... Ashley I think? Really sweet girl and she did the best she could to fix the cut which even she had to admit was completely botched so kudos to her but still I had lost over six inches of hair and had an awkward layer to grow out dutifully. Shame on Dana too for making eye contact with me the second day and not even bothering to apologize that she ruined my hair even though she knew she had done a terrible job and that's why I was back. Put it this way, I'm so happy that I didn't wake up in the middle of the night crying because I cut 6+ inches off of my hair.... yes, this has happened My first visit here didn't blow me away last year. Best experience here! I took a leap of faith trusting yelp reviews when picking my new salon after moving to NC... everyone knows that sometimes they can lead you astray. But thank god I did because this is the best place I've ever gotten my hair done- EVER! I called only one day I advance for my coloring treatment and without a lot of open time on my schedule I was praying that they could get me in on my random day off. With the help of the awesome lady at the front desk over the phone, and with a little bit of shuffling she was able to fit me in the next day with Amanda. I had gone in with the idea of just wanting to go lighter, but not really knowing how. She gave me all the information I needed to know and did exactly what we discussed. I've tried quite a few salons in the Raleigh area and Alter Ego has been by far the best experience yet. The online scheduling process could not be easier and it even allows you to book last minute appointments. The only tricky part of the whole experience was finding my way to the salon-- you have to go up some random metal stairs and open a pretty ominous looking door- -but once I entered, I was instantly greeted by the receptionists, offered a beverage and taken to the waiting area. This salon is huge and beautiful-- open floor plan, warehouse feel, gorgeous natural light streaming in. Everyone was beyond nice. I picked up a copy of the Raleigh Downtowner and was approached by my stylist almost immediately. The time slot I wanted put me with Jennifer who was so lovely and skilled. And even though she (like most of the stylists) has major tattoos and motorcycle boots, she didn't even raise an eyebrow when I showed her my dream 'do picture featuring Kate Middleton. Gotta love that. The hair cut was executed quickly and I absolutely love it. Throughout the cut she gave me advice on how to style and what tools to use-- she seemed genuinely interested in my hair maintenance routine, which was refreshing, especially since she didn't push products at me towards the end of the session. I referred my mother here for a Keratin treatment prior to her wedding after having been to the salon myself and having been impressed with the stylists. The first keratin treatment with Meghann didn't take and after three hours in the chair, 3 days of processing time, my mom was left with soft, frizzy hair that basically looked the same as before the treatment. My mom requested her money back but instead the salon offered to provide a corrective treatment. After a change in formula, reprocessing, 3 more hours in the chair, 3 more days of processing, the result took and my mom had a decent, frizz resistant do. Flash forward, right before my mom's wedding, Meghann did another keratin, which again did not take. Clearly the formula was not recorded and there was no attention to the client outcome. Bottom line, this salon doesn't have expertise in keratin straightening and when I spoke with the front desk they were unable to provide a 101 overview of brands and formula's utilized at the salon. Cool salon but I would recommend going elsewhere for keratin treatments. read more

I am a haircut bargain hunter. No, seriously. I grew up with a single parent and it's one of those areas where I just have a pitifully hard time parting with lots of money for someone to take shampoo and scissors to my head. But I trust all you Yelpers, and I decided to book with Alter Ego when my growing hair started to get a distressingly large number of split ends. It's awesome that you can book online, first of all, because I am a product of my telephone-scorning electronic generation and I don't like making appointments over the phone. In any case, the whole process was super easy and you will even see what stylist you're booked with. I live on Hargett Street, so I had walked by Alter Ego many a time; thus, it wasn't difficult for me to locate. But do note that you have to go into that brick building next to the sign about the Krav Maga to get in. The elevator opens right into the lobby. I was promptly checked in and offered a beverage. I settled in the comfy waiting area to read my Kindle, but scarcely had I opened it when it was already my turn. Jennifer cut my hair. She was very personable and encouraging regarding my ideas about the cut. She had plenty of advice and questions if I was interested in hearing them. On top of that, we got done with my fairly thick hair quite fast. I left feeling like my experience was absolutely worth the price, and that's a unique feeling for me! How many times can I write LOVE before spell check kicks in? This place is amazing. The salon is conveniently located downtown in an older building. Instead of destroying the original layout they left the tall ceilings, large windows and beautiful (original?) wooden floors. Local modern art covers the walls, giving it a fresh urban feel. There is plenty of space between the stations, so you are not right on top of everyone. There are also no accidental bumps causing the scissors to go a little further than expected. The online appointment system is very user friendly. You never forget an appointment with their confirmations and to change an appointment is super simple. Kegan Rushing is my go to and he is absolutely fabulous. An hour in his chair allows you to escape into a world of relaxation and beauty. Not to mention, you can chat with him just like a friend. He does both my hair and my husband's. We always leave happy. He is an artist with his scissors. When he asks me what to do I just say, "Whatever you want." I know I'm in excellent hands! read more

I've slowly been upgrading the hair cuts I get. In my childhood my mom cut my hair so I was trained to be frugal when it came to haircuts. Later in life, I began to go to Great Clips and later transitioned to a men's barbershop. I'm now trying to do something different with my hair (that is, let it grow out) so I decided to step it up a bit and go to professional stylist for some help. From what I read here on Yelp, Alter EGO has a good mix of men and women clients so I didn't think I'd feel out of place. I was not mislead. My first trip to Alter EGO was more like a consultation with a minor trimming which is what I expected. Stephen was the stylist that cut my hair and he made the whole process seemed natural. The appointment was not rushed and I got additional tips on how to style my hair and about how long it will take to get the final hair style that I wanted. My wife armed me with a photo of what I should look like (I think she was only talking about the hair, but I'm not sure) so I showed this to the stylist. He examined the photo and said that it would take some time (and a lot of hair product) but in about 2-3 months I could have some variation of that style. Alter EGO has a large open space with wood floors and a nice waiting area. I was even offered a drink while I waited (I guess this is one of the perks at nicer hair salons). I also got a shampoo and post-haircut rinse (again, another perk that I was not used to). The final result from my initial (minor) haircut was pleasing. It helped me get past some of the awkwardness of having long hair with no style. The only minor thing that bothered me is that when I looked in my hair later in the day, it was a little flat looking and the product and style didn't dry the way I had expected. I think a blow dry would have helped a little. I'll probably be returning in about two months for some additional hair maintenance. read more

Went to Alter Ego today and had a great experience. Julia cut my hair and did a fantastic job. She asked a lot of questions to determine what style I would like. During the cut, she explained what she was going to do and why. Julia told me how to use the different products and pointed out different way I could style my hair and how to do that as well. She is fun, pleasant, polite, and has a positive energy that is perfect for a stylist. I felt very relaxed and completely trusted her ideas about my hair, which looks and feels great! The salon is bright and open. The decor is a great mix of warm wood, distressed leather, some industrial architectural pieces, sleek cabinets and chairs, and very interesting art. I'll definitely be a return client. The prices are comparable to other good salons in the area. My cut was $45 plus tip. read more

I was in Raleigh for a wedding and was excited to try out Alter Ego. They are located directly in Downtown. They have an online booking service which I thought was great. You can book any service, and if you're familiar with the stylists you can ask for a specific stylist. I made an appointment to have my hair cut and styled. I arrived about 15 minutes early for my appointment. The entire ambiance of the place is pretty cool! It looks like a chic New York city loft with high ceilings, cool artwork, and brick walls. You check in at the front desk and they offer you wine, beer, or water. I opted for a glass of wine. The wait was a tad long, but this tends to happen at hair salons and since their was wine for the wait it wasn't a bother. All in all it was a great experience and better than your average hair salon or blow dry bar. They also use a specific line of Oribe products that are tailored to your hair. The Oribe products felt like that really made a difference. The girl did a great job on my hair. I was a little panicked at first because my hair is very frizzy and she didn't use a straighter. But she did such a great job styling and blowdrying my hair that I didn't miss the damaging touch of the straightener. They offer a Yelp check in deal and a separate Yelp offer that can be purchased. I scheduled a consultation with Kegan at Alter Ego because I had heard awesome reviews about him from three of my friends in one week. He made me feel very comfortable about making a big (for me) change--I was going to embrace my curly hair and stop trying to flat-iron it to death! Kegan made me LOVE my hair. I realized all my stylists before him just didn't know how to work with curly hair, much less how to cut it. After the cut, he had scheduled an extra 20 minutes so he could give me a beginner's course on styling curly hair, what kind of products to use (and was not salesy about buying products at the salon, though I totally would have if they hadn't just sold the last bottle), etc. I get all sorts of compliments on my hair, and I've started questioning my friends on whether they *really* love their current stylists or not. Since my last review, I've given Shawna full freedom with my hair. (See my previous review for all of the reasons she is awesome in the first place.) Once summer rolled around, I added some subtle blonde highlights. I was hesitant at first to add highlights (lots of bad experiences in the past), but I got so many compliments, and I really loved the change. Then we added more highlights, and I was nearly blonde! Something I swore I'd never do again, but she really rocked it with my hair and made it look awesome, not tacky and overly unnatural. During all of this, she introduced me to the Beth Minardi line of hair products that kept my hair healthy even while putting it through the stress of lightening. I swear, my hair got healthier even while I was adding all of the color because of Minardi products. Then I wanted my hair to be a bit darker again, so she blended my "natural" color back in, while still having some blonde highlights. Most recently, a few weeks ago, I told her: I am sick of highlights. I want the brown back. After several rounds of coloring and a few rounds of blending, my hair was pretty unevenly colored, and getting it back to one solid, rich, chocolate brown seemed like a challenge. worst haircut i have gotten in NC. I have lived here for going on 3 years and i have yet to find a worthy cut. I wanted to give this place a shot considering the great reviews i have seen about the place, but when i went in there the stylist didnt seem to have a clue what the hell he was doing. He asked me if i normally go for the messy look, i told him to do what he felt would work for me best. He had no method to his cut, just cutting frantically with no direction it seemed. I understand what a messy style is suppose to look like, but i also understand that huge bulges of hair shouldnt be missing in od spots around my hair. I dont know if this black dude was on drugs or something when he cut my hair or what, but i wasnt happy at all.
