Sad to say, many years after my original review, after my hairdresser Makenna left Mark Christopher (and I followed her, until she moved away) I decided to give the salon another try earlier this year. Unfortunately, my previous (very positive) experienced did not hold up. The salon ambience has been stripped... it felt very middle of the road decor-wise, loads of product shelves and no posh salon vibe remaining. I took a chance on a stylist who essentially ruined my hair with color. I've never had such a traumatic color job... the application of the foils and the color was insane - foils scrunched every which way, no rhyme or reason... she was so rough on my head when she removed the foils, that it actually hurt. But it was the result of the color that actually had me in tears. I had to go to another salon to have it fixed, and when i tried to get a refund for it from Mark Christopher they gave me a bit of a runaround for about two months before I finally got refunded. I don't love giving poor public reviews but sadly this place seems to have had a fall from grace from its original top salon status. read more

Boyfriend paid up to $90 for a haircut only to be rushed out in 15 min with botched uneven hair with patches of neck hair unshaven. The stylist didn't use a cape so there was hair all over his shirt when he was done. This place is a scam. There are so many other better businesses in Raleigh. read more

Went twice. Once with a newer stylist, who missed an entire spot of my grey roots when retouching them and left wet dye in my hair. I legitimately left the salon with wet black dye in the bottom half of my hair. When I called and left them a VM they didn't even acknowledge the wet dye comment, just told me to come back for a touch up. Fine, whatever. They have great reviews for some unknown reason so I thought it was a fluke. Went back a second time with a different stylist and my hair was cut unevenly. One side was about an inch longer than the other. Not even worth it to call and complain, I'll just never be back. read more

I have never left a bad review for any business ever. I support local businesses in the Raleigh area whenever possible, but I just can't ignore the way I was treated at this salon. I had a hair appointment on a Tuesday night at 6:30 for a simple balayage and trim. The hairdresser was nice and did a great job on my hair; HOWEVER, within a couple of hours of leaving the salon my nose began to turn bright red and blisters started to form. The next morning I called the salon first thing to tell them I had an apparent chemical burn or was having an allergic reaction to something they used. The person I spoke to on the phone was kind and sympathetic and assured me she would speak to the manager and call me back. About 7 hours later I had not heard back from the salon so I decided to stop by on my way home from work. This is when my opinion forever changed of Mark Christopher salon. Upon entering the salon I spoke to the receptionist (Chris), she had heard my story and told me right off the bat that "we all talked about it and there's just no way that happened here." She then told me she was a make-up artist and that what was happening on my nose looked to her like it was "cystic acne" and that I should consider seeing a dermatologist. I explained to her that the blisters appeared within an hour or so of leaving the salon and she still insisted I had acne or must have used something new on my face, even after my repeated attempts to tell her I have not used anything new on my face (facewash, makeup, lotion, etc). She then went and grabbed a stylist to talk to me. The stylist was definitely nicer and a little less condescending, but kept insisting that there was no way I got the blisters from anything at the salon, that I probably used something new on my face, or that I suddenly became allergic to something I have used for years. No one at the salon was able to provide me any tips on how to treat the blisters. So, the next day, I visited a dermatologist. She told me that I definitely came into contact with an irritant (likely hair dye/bleach that got in my face), and that it was highly unlikely that I am suddenly allergic to something I have used for years, especially since only my nose broke out and not the rest of my face. I was prescribed 2 different medications and I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't scar. I am attaching pictures so everyone can see the severity of the wounds on my face. I have never been so appalled at the customer service of a business as I am with MC salon. They never ever even entertained the idea that the blisters on my face could be a result of a chemical from their salon. They tried to convince me that I somehow did it to myself or that I was just having a weird acne breakout (even though it looks nothing like acne). I will never go back to this salon. read more

Treated myself to my first-ever balayage for my birthday. I came to the salon with a few Pinterest photos for inspiration and Catie walked me through the entire process, color options, expectations, as well as was super attentive to my budget. She helped me pick out the best option for my hair's health and appearance while also fitting within my budget. Terrible hair color and cut $350. I am a blonde, came in to add a few more low lights for with some low lights for dimension and came out completely entire head dark brown, no blonde at all. Cut was equally bad when I expressed concern about the color the stylist just smiled and said it would fade???? The next morning I sent my written concern to the salon but the owner never replied it has been over a week and a half. Have to go to another salon for a color correction and recut. My daughter checked prior to making her appointment to confirm Grace could color her hair (shared a photo of hair prior to visit). She took time off work and drove 45 minutes to her appointment only to learn Grace felt her hair wasn't ready for color. Instead, Grace "offered" to give her a hair mask for $50. My daughter agreed as she had taken time off work and made the drive there! Grace asked if she wanted her haircut. My daughter said, "NO." Grace replied that she would just give her a "dusting." This "dusting" was an additional $68! Her hair looked no different when she left then when she went in, yet I guess it was a trim. When my daughter expressed her disappointment in the services and explained she did not ask for a haircut, no one cared at all. She agreed to the hair mask but not a dusting/trim/cut for $68! She requested some type of compromise yet again, they showed no concern, nor would agree to any refund whatsoever. So, if you don't like the service or your hair after visiting Mark Christopher, too bad for you; they are completely indifferent to your satisfaction with your experience at their salon. Had my hair done by Brandon. We discussed my goals twice before I went to see him the first time, including looking at pics together and going over the exact process that would be required, so there was no confusion over exactly what I wanted and what needed to be done to get me there. I was going for a bright silver balayage with my natural brunette roots for a smooth grow out. When I arrived, I verified the price with him, and it ended up being more than he had originally quoted me, but I didn't complain because I was willing to pay what it took to get the right look. My hair at the start was already balayaged bleach yellow from the last time I had it done; but still, the entire process from start to finish only took him a couple of hours and that didn't feel right knowing we needed to start with an almost white base. He didn't actually take my hair to a bright white, it was just a lighter shade of bleach blonde than when I came in. And he didn't use a permanent bright silver dye like we talked about, he used a demi-permanent dark grey/ash brown gloss. I didn't complain because it was pretty, even if it wasn't what we talked about or what I asked for; that is until I washed it for the first time and all the grey shine gloss washed out leaving me with just dark brown hair, followed by bleached yellow after a few more washes. So I went back to have him correct it. I sent him another picture and tried to go over the process with him again, not really understanding where the disconnect was, but hoping maybe we'd be on the same page this time. Again, the whole process from start to finish only took a couple of hours. Again, he only took it another shade lighter yellow. And again, he used a gloss instead of a more permanent hair dye. When I left the second time, my hair was even worse than the first. It was balayaged my natural brunette at the top like before, but this time it faded into a bleach blonde with PATCHES of silver toward the bottom. It looked awful. My roommate even commented saying how much worse it looked. And after one wash, the small patches of silver gloss completely washed out. I was so upset, I tried contacting him again, but he made it clear he wasn't doing it a third time. The thing that upsets me the most is that because he showed me pics of silvers he'd done before and discussed the process he knew needed to be done at length, I know he is a competent and skilled cosmetologist and knows how to do what I was asking for. It felt like he took advantage of me, did a half-assed job to get me "close enough", and said, "Oh well, you just didn't understand" when I was of course unhappy with the end result and understood perfectly well that he hadn't done the right process to get the correct end result we'd discussed. So now I'm just stuck with bleached yellow hair, and I'm out the money I spent with nothing to show for it. read more

New to Raleigh this is considered a good place?? not once did the stylist asked me the color I wanted I left there looking worse than when I had come in dark drab dull hair after I spent $388! That's before a tip. I called to try to speak with the owner or manager I sent an email to try to speak with someone and nobody has gotten back to me. They are not the quality they espoused to be when they opened and I would recommend against using this salon. I am SO happy with this salon!!! Got my hair cut here last night by Abby who did an amazing job salvaging a haircut I got two months ago someplace else that I hated. This salon is centrally located in Five Points, has tons of parking available, and is gorgeous inside. Everything is super clean and I love their remodel. I'm partial to Oribe products because they are what work for my hair, so this place is paradise for me. Oribe everywhere!!! (They also have R+Co if that's your jam) Also, I love that they don't push product! Like thank you a million! Yes, I invest in Oribe Gold Lust for my hair because I take meds that make my hair look like I'm 90 but I don't want to feel guilted into buying crap like other salons do. This place is so great! Terrible quality and service, it was nothing what I expected. $400 for this and the customer service is worse than what they did to my hair. It took me 2 weeks to contact the manager to see if she could give me a refund or someone professional from the place could do a better job with my hair but no, nothing happened. Yesterday my boyfriend went to the place to talk to the manager and she told him that it was my fault for not saying that I did not like the service and that she could not do anything because the transaction had already been made and next time I have to say something at the moment and not wait later to say something. When in reality that day after seeing what they had done to me in the mirror and discovering that they were going to charge me $400 for this result (which in the original price on the website said it would be $280) the only thing I wanted was to leave the place and cry. Be careful because it's a price scam, they charge you things you didn't even ask for and they don't care about the customers. Hopping on the Brandon fan girl train here. I tested him out a couple months ago for color. He really listened to my needs and nailed it. He also took a few inches off to help get rid of some damage, and although I thought I'd regret it, it looked awesome and was the right choice. So after he passed that test with flying colors, I'm reaching for some lofty hair goals I've always wanted to try. Met with him yesterday, and we created a basic plan to get my hair there over the next few months. We did a transitional color, and I can't get over how fantastic it is. Brandon listened to every thing I said and requested, asked questions when more was needed, and he just GOT me on it. By far the worst experience I have ever encountered in a salon. My experience is not even worthy of 1 star, but in order to post, you must at least give 1 star. I had my hair cut by Robert who is supposed to come with a wealth of experience. I showed him pictures of the bob I wanted and tried to explain what I wanted. He didn't seem to pay too much attention when I was speaking to him and seemed in a hurry. This is all after he made me wait for 35 minutes after my scheduled visit and also after having to reschedule me from the day before. He cut my hair in less than 15 minutes. He spent more time blowdrying it than cutting it. I assumed he would go back in once he dried it, as most stylists do. My haircut is so uneven and poorly done. It was so obvious he didn't spend enough time on the cut. When I pointed out to him that one side was longer and that the layers framing my face were uneven, he became irate and started going off about how he doesn't make mistakes, that he's cut hair in Dubai, and that he had just given me a $300 haircut! Who does this?? A true professional would have taken the time to evaluate the cut and try to correct it rather than screaming at the client about how he doesn't make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. We are all human. I was so frustrated and angry that I just said OK and walked away. When I brought it up to the front desk girl, she called the Manager over, and she offered to fix it, but I declined. The truth is I couldn't get out of there fast enough after how I had just been treated, and just 1.5 years ago, the Manager was a trainee there. I couldn't risk leaving there with my hair looking worse than it already did. The front desk and Manager saw how upset I was leaving there. That said, I would have thought they would have relayed the incident to the owner and that I would get an apology call. I called the salon 2 days later (after they reopened after the wknd) and left a message for the owner with the front desk, and I am still waiting for a callback. It is obvious they do not care what happens in their salon. I will never be back there and will tell anyone who listens what a horrible experience I had there. After CONFIRMING on the phone that I would NOT be required to wear a N95 mask for my hair appointment upon their reopening. After getting to the salon, I was told in the middle of my appointment that I needed to wait outside because I wouldn't wear a mask. Then was told I needed to reschedule EVEN THOUGH I have a health condition that prevents me from wearing a mask. Can you say discrimination and poor customer service? I went to Mark Christopher salon to get a full set of blonde highlights in advance of a wedding I had to attend. I called to discuss pricing and was told based on experience of the stylist, the cost range was $160-$250. I didn't want to skimp on quality, so suggested I would be comfortable at a $200 price point. They booked me with a stylist accordingly. When I went in we reviewed a number of inspiration photos and I emphasized I wanted an all-over bright blonde result (my natural color was light brown after three years of no color treating). After the process was complete, my hair looked absolutely NO different--maybe only slightly lighter near the crown of my head. I thought maybe it was the lighting playing tricks on me so I paid ($280--much higher than the agreed upon price for highlights-only. No cut, style, etc.) and left. After seeing my significant other and friends, no one could tell I had gotten my hair done at all. I had "before" photos and took some additional "afters" in the same lighting. It was identical (so much so that my friend guessed incorrectly which was the before vs after because my hair looked less shiny/more damaged after). I had heard this was a reputable salon, so I gave them a call to explain the issue and ask for a refund (touch-up color wasn't an option before the wedding I was going to and my hair was so damaged from the first treatment, I didn't want it to get worse--I have really fine hair). When I first called, the woman who answered the phone spoke with her manager, Kim, and had me email the inspiration photos and my before and afters to her--I proactively offered to do this because no one could argue with the photos. They said they would reply by EOD, so after hearing nothing for three days, I called back. The woman who answered the phone said she would confirm with Kim that she had gotten my email and placed me on hold. Here it is 41 minutes later as I write this review and I'm still on hold. After reading the other reviews about their customer service, I'm not surprised. I'm leaving a 1 star, not just for the lack of results/poor outcome from my visit, but more-so for their unwillingness to make this situation right. I followed my stylist, Hayley, to this salon. When you walk in, you are welcomed with a friendly staff. They offer you a drink. They recently renovated the space with new floors and and new shampoo stations. If feels very bright and welcoming. The shampoo station now feels more comfortable to rest your head/neck, which is an improvement to the previous ones. There is also a leg rest, which is very comfortable. My favorite part is the had massage while getting the shampoo, it is so relaxing. Hayley always asks what I want to do that day. She listens well, makes suggestions if I am not sure what I want to do that day!! They offer refills on the refreshment (I've gotten water and tea). When the cut is finished, I will either get a blow out or curls. After the styling is complete, I will pay my ticket and schedule ahead for my next appointment. It's very easy. Rescheduling is easy too, but must do in advance. They sometimes will call if they have an earlier opening due to a cancellation. That worked out for me the last visit since it freed up my late afternoon. read more

Grace is one of the best hairstylists I ever had. I trust her and she's always super honest when it comes to keeping the integrity of my hair. I have really fragile hair and am losing some of it due to a health condition and she helped me achieve a goal of having thick beautiful hair with my NBR Extensions. They were also so affordable. Probably the most affordable I've seen when I was doing my research. She does amazing work and by looking at me now, you'd never know I was losing some of my hair. In addition, Grace doesn't treat me like a client she treats me like a friend. I am very OCD and by no means an easy client and she's always so patient with me and answers all of my questions thoroughly. I always look forward to my appointments with her because not only do I look beautiful after she works on me but we have a great time with lots of laughs in the process. I have never met someone who cares about what they do and their clients hair goals and hair health as much as Grace does. I was visiting Raleigh and desperately needed a blowout because I was far away from home. I called a few other salons, but weirdly MCS was the only one that answered. The woman that I spoke with was completely professional, gave me an appointment time almost right then and away I went. I walked in and the salon took my breath away. It is just visually stunning. I like that in a salon. The woman at the desk (I am so sorry I didn't get her name) was just beautifully put together and SO kind. The whole salon was just impressive. Shannon was my stylist and she was bubbly and talkative and REALLY good at her job. We went to the sink and I recognized the expensive smell of Oribe product and was told that's mainly what they use. Let me tell you, this stuff is NOT cheap. It is most assuredly the best product I have ever had in my hair (sorry, Kerastase!) and Shannon used the best of the products on my hair and my hair was just beautiful. I also loved that Shannon was trying to change her hair color and it was so subtle and well done that I knew if I ever needed color that I could trust her to do it. She's just the best. When I called to discuss my reservations with the front desk manager, Tim, I was cut off and told my views were "curved" and not given any space to explain. Worst salon experience ever! I was booked with Adrian, supposedly a level-2 stylist. I went in for a standard layered cut, I explained in detail about what I wanted (needed to add more layers) and assumed this is not too complicated he should get this right since this is a very standardized cut, but of course that's not what happened. I was left with a trimmed down version of what I previously had. I had also asked for short layers to frame my face, but instead he gave me a choppy cut in the front, it did not frame my face nor were they cascading layers, it looked as tho I let a friend with no experience cut my hair. Overall, I ended up with choppy cuts that had no fluidity and looked awful. The worst of all, he kept telling me this what it's supposed to look like- um no.. I have been getting layered cut for years and this is NOT what it should look like, he kept pushing his opinions on me and I was not having it. Instead of working to fix it the way I wanted my haircut, instead he just kept trying to convince me that this was the right look and did nothing to fix it, in hindsight I realize he wasn't qualified to perform the cut. So this whole session was a waste of time. So anyways I went back again because he had offered to fix it for free, but here is the kicker, when I went back a couple days later, I explained what needed to be fixed and he simply said "we were on different pages" (I'm sorry what!? I have never received that response from a hair stylist before, like, ever!) and referred me to a different stylist, for which I had to pay, AGAIN. So essentially my hair was not fixed for free of charge as promised ( note the lack of professionalism and the inability to take accountability by the stylist). So at this point I was convinced that he has no training whatsoever to perform the cut that I had asked for and made excuses when I went back to have it fixed. This person was considered a level 2 stylist, what a joke! The salon should send their "junior" stylists to get more training if they want to call them level -2 stylist and charge that amount from the clients. I demanded a refund for the poor service I was given, the salon gave me a refund. Safe to say I will def not be going back to this salon. Overall my experience here has been nothing but inconvenient and a proper waste of my time. You go to salons expecting professionals to cut your hair not students in training. I'm very dissatisfied with the salon's quality of service. taking hours of time from my day to go back to get my hair fixed again, doesn't scream fun. Oh and paying twice..yeah no thanks. I don't normally review places, but this, I thought people should know. So if any of you have a particular request for cut at this salon, call ahead and ask for what the stylist' expertise is in the said cut and only then book with them. Better yet go someplace else. Great things to a say about MC Salon... Kyle did an awesome job with my cut and color. I had some pretty bad highlights to fix, and he blended them beautifully with balayage. I waited for 2 weeks for my cut, and was psyched about this place. I scheduled my appointment on my lunch break, so I was running a few minutes late. When I got there, 8 minutes after my appointment time, the woman behind the desk checked her computer for my appointment and proceeded to tell me my stylist had left because they had a "15 minute cancellation policy". I told her I did arrive within the 15 minute grace period, and even after the time it took her to look me up and check the back for the stylist it was still under the 15 minute mark. She told me there was nothing she could do because my stylist was gone. He must have left five minutes after my appointment time, and there was no call to confirm I was still coming. I wish I could give a higher rating, but that's hard to do when I didn't have the chance to have my hair cut. Big waste of time, guys. read more

My first visit to Mark Christopher Salon was to get my hair done for Redress Raleigh 2013. Makenna put my hair up in a lovely updo. During my updo, Makenna was friendly and I noticed how lovely the salon was. A very professional, stylish, relaxing environment. They commented that they are big on social media so I started following them on Facebook and Instagram and I signed up for their email list serv. I really enjoyed my experience and had every intention of going back. In the meantime, I kept up with their before and after pictures on their social media and I always tried to win their giveaways. One day, I received an email offering 20% off on a hair color and cut. I always love a good deal so I took advantage of the 20% off and finally made an appointment. I requested Makenna and she did a lovely job!!! I described what it was that I was looking for and she did what I wanted and more. Side note: While I was there for my appointment, I ran into a coworker. We were talking about our company's holiday party coming up that weekend and I mentioned that I was gathering giftcards to give to the employees. One of the owners overheard me and he generously offered to provide 2 $25 giftcards to the salon. How awesome! Another side note: I love how you can book an appointment online. I cannot wait until my next hair appointment with Makenna! I highly recommend her and the salon! read more
