Cobblers.... aren't just delicious hot fruit-filled desserts! A "cobbler" is actually a person or shop that fixes, alters, or even creates shoes and boots! Let's face it, cobblers are getting harder and harder to find; especially in this day and age of fast, disposable fashion. However, that's what Al's Redlands Boot & Shoe Shop is. They are located smack in the middle of Downtown Redlands. A long, thin building that hugs the side of neighboring Shop Suey along Redlands Blvd. They are also located next to Parliament Chocolate and a few doors down from The Tartan. Since the building is quite small width-wise, it can feel a little claustrophobic inside as they pack a lot into the space they have. I'll be very honest here. My wife and I haven't used this shop in a good while. We've had mixed experiences here. I'll try to be as far as can be. So my wife used to use a similar place in Highland/San Bernardino that was in the same plaza at the Regency Cinema on Sterling. They were there for a long time but went out of business around 10 years or so ago. Being that we're often in Redlands to do our shopping and whatnot; we were very aware of this place and thought to give it a try. My wife has diabetic foot issues and sometimes has to have her shoes altered in order to accommodate her. Mostly this consists of bringing down the heels of some of her favorite shoes so they are of a more reasonable size so she's more stable on her feet (due to her neuropathy). This is a fairly common ask of places like this. To be fair, the first two or three times we've taken shoes here, the wifey loved the results and was very happy. After that is when their weirdness began. The following 4 pairs of shoes we brought shoes here to be altered, we noticed when we brought them home and inspected them it appeared as of nothing had been done to them at all. No alterations. No height adjustments. Nothing. Perplexed, we brought them back in to ask the employees about them. The employee that does most of the work on shoes took a brief look at them and then assured us that he remembered the shoes and that he indeed did the work we asked. We then insisted that no he didn't, and measured them in front of him to show they were still the same size as when brought them in, and not the heel size we requested. He begrudgingly took them back and said he'd "try again" with them. Okay first off... if he's "trying again", why did we pay him the first time to begin with?! 'splain this to me?! Anyway, a few days later we came to pick them up again after they called to say they were ready, aaaaaaannnnnnnnd no they weren't. This time it appeared as if they had sanded down the heel approx 1/4" and glued some kind of protective rubber pad on the tip of the heel. HUH?!?! We asked that the heels on all 4 pairs be taken town like 1.5". This looked like the employee had just made a cursory effort to make it look like SOMETHING was done to them, hoping we'd be okay with this. What made it worse is that they wanted to CHARGE US AGAIN for this additional work they (didn't) do!! I think not! Fortunately, we inspected the work there in the shop this time when we picked them up and refused to pay this time as the work wasn't done. We even questioned why we paid the first time since the work was never done that time either. To this, we got a blank stare. That was the last time we've frequented here. I will grant that it was a number of years ago, but after reading some of the other reviews; it seems like it's a mixed bag when coming here. This review reflects our experiences here when we used to regularly use them. We might try using them again in the near future to see if they've become more honest. With all politeness and respect, I urge everyone patronizing this business to make sure to check their work to make sure it meets your expectations and quality requirements before taking it home; and certainly before paying for it. Well, it finally happened: my "go to" dress shoes were embarrassing. I came to this shoe repair store and had them replace the heels and shine the shoes as well. The shoes look like new again! Brought a pair of Visvims in for a outsole re-glue. Was charged $8 which was much cheaper than I had prepared to pay, so was pleasantly surprised there. Picked up later that week. For proper adhesion it's regular to sand things down before gluing, but when sanding down the midsole to re-glue the outsole a large bit of it was sanded away that wasn't part of where the outsole was attached and along the sides of the midsoles there were scratches all over from the sander. Along with all of that, the toe area was barely even attached upon getting them back. Was unsatisfied and craftsmanship seemed to be poor, but was happy to have my shoes be wearable again. Until I wore them twice and the outsole began coming unglued again. I am not rough with my shoes, these were just standard wears to walk to my classes. Will never be going back read more

Left shoes pre-Covid and when we came back to pick them up, after it was clear to go, worker said she couldn't find them. Then she said it was over 30 days and I said then what do you do with shoes over 30 and she said nothing. She said they should be here but they're not. Very irresponsible. read more

Hired this guy to put a spit shine on my uniform boots, when I picked my boots up, they looked worse than when I brought them in. I asked the guy where the spot shine was, he said "Right there"! Ok, so, that jerk didn't even give me my money back or offer to re-do them. I don't know what that clown thinks a spit shine is, but this wasn't even in close. Don't waste your money, that guy is a joke! It looks like he polished my boots with a Hershey bar and a 25 cent comb. Yeah pal, you took me for 8 bucks, that's the last 8 bucks out of me you'll ever get, not to mention that your name is mud at my department. read more

I rarely leave reviews but I feel the need to share a positive review. On a couple different occasions I have gone to college shoe repair a couple blocks away and the owner won't even price the repair, says he can't or it would be too expensive so I have come here. Most recently, I tried to come here first but they were closed for 2 weeks for vacation (they are a small family owned business) so I tried the other place again, same story, told me a simple zipper would cost almost as much as a new pair. So I went back to Al's when they reopened, not only did he fix it but only charged $8. The most I ever paid was $30 for a very expensive set of cowboy my friend couldn't get fixed in her small town. These folks are honest, do excellent work, don't overcharge, and have great service especially for as small a shop it is. I would absolutely recommend their services to anyone! read more

I can't say enough about the great experience I had. The lady at the counter was warm and friendly. I brought a sandal in and didn't have the buckle my dog chewed off. She went in the back and brought one out that matched the other two that were on the sandal beautifully. They had it done in 1.5 hours and only charged me $10. I went to this shop in hopes of getting a small metal hoop replaced on my purse. The lady behind the counter was very rude and told me to ship it back to the manufacturer for repair...I tried to ask if she knew what the piece was called so I could fix it myself. She just shook her head and was done with the conversation...I was just looking for a simple repair on my handbag, no need to ship it back and pay all this extra money...I ended up doing some research and bought the piece from Amazon. Had a pair of Danner work boots resoled for $90.00. Sole already worn down to slick didn't even last a month. First time having my boots resoled so maybe this is the best you can get. I find that hard to believe so I will try somebody else. Would purchase a new set of Danner's but they have been back ordered for 4 months. read more

I called in a couple of hours before dropping by and was told my boots could get fixed by the following day. I was super excited, because they're my favorite pair and I haven't been able to wear them in a year. I didn't know who to trust with them. I show up, find no parking nearby. I parked across the street at the mall and walk across. I walk into the shop, which by the way goes by a different name than Al's, and wait a couple of minutes. The guy, Al maybe, comes out and takes my babies. They're bagged and my info is obtained, that's when I find out I have to wait two days. Bummer! When I picked them up I paid a bit over $10. I was really hoping they were fully fixed, but they had only received a new heel and a face lift (they were super shiny). He did a good job on it, but I left somewhat disappointed since I really wanted a new sole too. Maybe he'll amaze me next time. Yes, he deserves a next time. Zipper broke off the (damaged) thread on one of my favorite boots this week, took it in on Tuesday and just picked it up today! Working good and was only $10.00 for the repair! They replaced the thread and got the zipper working. Only street parking, though... but it's Redlands, so that means driving around the block a few times until a spot finally opens up. I hate this place. I left 6 pairs of shoes to be cleaned, polished and paws added to the outer sole for slip protection. The only thing they did were the paws. Looked exactly how they did when I dropped them off. The only reason this place gets customers is because it's been around for years, because it damn sure ain't the quality or service. read more

I took a pair of boots , Im very clean and carful with everything . I visit this place with my boots in a box . They put the new sole but they damage the rest of my boots , I cried on my boots and they denied the damage so I ending loosing what I paid and the boots . I went in at around 3 to get my dress shoe's heel repaired because it was falling off and the store owner told me it would be done by the end of the day. I came in at around 5 to check up and it was done! It also only cost $5 and he polished the shoes and got rid of all of my really major scuffs on the shoe! It's just as new again! I had a great experience here! I highly recommend it and I will definitely be back since I wear down my shoes a lot. read more

In a day and age where major corporations flood the streets with their chains, Redland's Boot and Shoe repair is a breath of fresh air that offers the old time mom and pop style business. The owner and his wife greet everyone with a smile and honest work. It's rare to find a shoe cobbler these days with the talent and cheap prices. You can tell the owners put their heart and soul into their business that they have owned for years. They are an iconic piece of history in a historical section of downtown redlands. Where else can you go these days to save your favorite heels, re-sole your worn out work boots, fix a zipper on your overpriced Gucci(probably fake Gucci for most) and refresh your favorite kicks? Re-heeled my boots which quickly wore out. They didn't bother cleaning them nor polishing them. $65, I think they charged me. No "thank you's", no friendliness, no extra mile. Got my boots Re-heeled in Santa Fe now for 35.00 where they clean and polish them too. Agh, the IE!!!!! read more

Cheap low quality work. The materials they use are bargain basement. My new soles lasted several months, perhaps the least amount of time I've seen. (The heels also started to fall l off.)The cobbler I used this time commented on the low quality of the materials from just a glance. No cheaper than a shop that uses good materials either. Avoid. DO NOT TAKE YOUR SHOES HERE!! They "could not find" a pair of my favorite boots when I lost my claim ticket. I don't know how you could forget a pair of boots literally falling off the soles brought in with rubberbands wrapped around the feet. I am VERY unhappy and have been given nothing but the run-around every time (6x) I have followed up. Give me an hour and I'll go through your tiny shop and find them.
