Call me old school or what, but I absolutely love this place. It's not just the food, it's that small diner feel where I come in and I am asked immediately what I want and how my day is going. Now you're not going to get a five course meal here, but you're going to be taken care of by a man with great hospitality and a love for what he does. Breakfast is always good and the lunch specials are always fresh.

Al Bernier Holding One Of His Famous Meat Pies!!!
    John F.

Al's Place in Woonsocket serves up Tourtière, a French-Canadian style of meat pie, in a tiny one-room diner, with a few red stools lining the counter. Roland Gagne sits at one of those stools, remembering Christmas dinners from his childhood. Al's Place sells about 500 meat pies between Thanksgiving and New Year's, all made from scratch by owner and head chef Al Bernier. To keep up with the holiday rush, Bernier stocks the pies by the dozen in a freezer at the back of the diner. How famous is his father-in-law's meat pie? Well, Cote says people come from Maine, New Hampshire and even Florida to get them. "They move from Woonsocket down south to Florida, and when they come and visit, they actually take a cooler and take back 9, 10 pies," said Cote. "They want their friends to try it out in Florida, so they travel." The meat pie traveled to Woonsocket with French-Canadians, who sought jobs in the city's textile mills starting around the mid-1860s. Many of them came from the province of Quebec, explains Anne Conway, who runs the Museum of Work and Culture in Woonsocket.

Found this gem by luck, searching for the best French meat pies in Woonsocket RI. I was traveling to visit my mom in the rehabilitation nursing home and wanted to surprise her with one. She hasn't had one since her parents were alive in the 80's. (The food at nursing homes is horrible) I purchased 2 of these personal size meat pies for 3.00 each. What a deal! They were very friendly when I walked in and helpful. They gave me instructions on how to heat them in the oven. I brought them home heated for 1 hour and fed my very picky elderly father. I was wrapping up my moms to take to her. My dad absolutely loved it. I then surprised my mom with hers and she was so overjoyed and happy she could eat good flavorful food finally. She has hasn't had a appetite since her injury and she devoured the entire thing! The owner told me I would be back and he is right! Thank you for putting a smile on my beloved moms face!

We entered through the back door since we saw others had and it was opened to allow fresh air in. All the booths hugging the wall were taken so we seated at the middle tables (but also offered the bar area). Their menu isn't too big, which made my decision easier and they had plates that have a little bit of everything which I loved. My mom had the MO which came with two eggs, home fries, toast, and four bacon and I ended up going with the little lady which included one egg, one sausage, one bacon, home fries (beans or fruit are other options), and I chose grilled English muffin as my bread. I was a bit worried it wouldn't be enough food but it was more than enough. The eggs was cooked perfectly. The bacon was crispy. The sausage was flavorful and tender. The potatoes were unique and one of the best I've ever had. They were short sticks that could've been lightly fried or maybe grilled, I wasn't sure. But the flavor and consistency/texture were amazing. The French toast was really good, thick and eggy. A sprinkle of cinnamon would've been perfect. I will be coming here more often. Prices are really good and the staff is very kind and attentive.

Lots of seating and I like the music that they play. You can definitely tell that this is a Latin inspired restaurant. Our waiter came over and he was pleasant as well. He was also the bartender but did well making sure all of his tables were taken care of along with the bar. I ordered a Coke and the crab cake Benedict. The significant other had the tea and chilaquiles. I really enjoyed my benefit. The chipotle hollandaise was slightly spicy but not overwhelming. Eggs were poached well, the crab cake was tasty, and the home fries were nice and crispy. No real complaints there! The chilaquiles were smaller than I thought they'd be but the significant other said he liked them. So, why 4 stars? I've been here before and while it's good some dishes don't blow me away. But I definitely keep coming back.

Missy's came up as being affordable, with good reviews and pictures, and it was open. You cannot miss the building since it is a bright highlight blue color. There is a well-sized parking lot. When we arrived, there were a couple of people there, but we were still seated at the booth by the window that we were eyeing. Our waitress gave us some menus, and immediately, I was drawn to the plate with home fries, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, and French toast (or pancakes). It was only about $11 and brings a little bit of everything. After about 10-15 minutes, our food was brought out. I was a bit underwhelmed by the French toast. It looked like regular toast, so I thought they maybe misunderstood that I wanted grilled English muffin for my bread. But turns out, their French toast does not have as much batter as l am used to. I do like that it is sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, but it is a but dry - the syrup makes it better. I requested my eggs scrambled and with cheese and the cheese was perfectly melted. The bacon was crispy, with the right thickness. I had read that their sausages are good, and indeed they are - juicy, a tad spicy, and flavorful. The English muffin was crispy and buttery. The potatoes were soft and tasty. The back of the paper placemats have puzzles and activities, which we only realized before leaving. The inside made us feel like we were at someone's home, so it made us feel more comfortable.

When trying out a new restaurant, we have little to no expectations but we go with an empty stomach & open mind. I had to look up Manville in Google maps - it's half way between Cumberland & Woonsocket. The restaurant is an unassuming storefront on a mostly residential street. We walked in & were greeted warmly. The restaurant was hopping on a late Saturday morning, so we took the two open seats at the counter. Your Mother's Favorite is truly a family affair. Dad is in the kitchen with an uncle & a son, mom is running the front of house with another son & some other relatives. We learned that this restaurant is an offshoot of their Sunnyside on the Street food truck. They offered any 1/2 lb brisket/chuck blend burger on a brioche bun for the RI Food Fights coupons. Upon recommendation of the son who was serving us at the counter, I went with their best seller: The Mother In Law - caramelized onions, Gruyere cheese, house made sauce. It was SOOOO good! The burger was perfectly cooked with a ton of delicious caramelized onions & ooey gooey melted cheese holding it all together. Hubby opted for The Hot Mom - pepper jack cheese, red onion & house-made mango habanero sauce. He will order anything that will give his taste buds a kick... & this definitely kicked! For me, the sauce was too hot. For hubby, it was definitely HOT but he couldn't get enough! I've never seen a man eat a burger that fast! LOL Hubby was so excited about the mango habanero sauce that the dad/owner came out of the kitchen to discuss creating it. He also provided us with a small container to bring home to enjoy & shared the recipe. I was in the mood for something a little sweet & ordered one slice of the French toast. It was delicious. They also do a deep fried French toast which is something I will order the next time. We got into a nice conversation with the table next to the counter. The couple were fans of the family's original food truck & are repeat customers of Your Mother's Favorite. They were also fans of RI Food Fights - especially the January #LordOfTheWings. We concur! We ogled the other delicious breakfast dishes being delivered to customers. Hubby wants to try both the Huevos Rancheros & the Biscuits with Gravy. Their pancakes are supposed to be out of this world but I will be hard pressed not to order The Mother In Law again! Even though it was very busy, the family made time to chat with us & answer questions about the restaurant & menu. We loved everything about Your Mother's Favorite & can't wait for a return visit!
