A not-so hidden gem in Mt Vernon. You know it's good when you order two nights in a row. My first order consisted of the spicy shrimp roll, shrimp shumai, and super California roll. The spicy shrimp roll was my absolute favorite. I enjoyed the rest of the meal but I probably wouldn't get the shumai again because it has a slightly sweet taste that I couldn't get around. I did, however, like the dipping sauce that accompanied it. I loved the sushi so much I ordered from here again the next night. I didn't want to get the exact same thing so I went with my favorite spicy shrimp roll and salmon nigiri. Nothing too exciting but it was fresh, delicious, and delivered in a reasonable time. This will definitely be my go-to sushi spot. read more

One of the gentleman at the bar made me and my boyfriend a drink each and it was hair in both drinks. It was disgusting. They did not even accommodate for this issue, just acted like nothing happened. It was TWO different drinks with hair in them. We left shortly after this. read more

It was very good! Management was great, vibe was nice and Raj made the food very good! Would highly recommend!

So let's talk about this... I been meaning to go here for years. I heard nothing but GREAT things about this place. I was here on Friday during Artscape after dark. It was ALLLLLLL the way LIVE! HOWEVER the customer service here was still on point. I don't know what type of training they had before hand but I salute all of the employees here that night. They were fast and had the best attitudes. I'll be honest I probably would have quit that night... But the bartenders here was phenomenal! I had a bucket... Not sure what was in there but all I needed was One! One and Done! I had some honey old bay wings and they were so good. I think Aloha Sushi is going to be my new late night hang out spot! read more

Cute local spot. They have a very long sushi menu so you'll def find something you like if you're a connoisseur. I tried a few different rolls but my fave is typically spicy salmon. I also had their shrimp teriyaki poke bowl as well which was really good. Didn't get to try any of their cocktails because the bartender wasn't around but I would come back again and test the waters. The decor wasn't too memorable so if you're drawn to that, don't get your hopes up. If you're downtown Baltimore and craving sushi, it's worth a shot. - Rating: 6/10 read more

I've been here twice and both times the bf and I just ended up at their downstairs bar versus the nice sushi bar upstairs. Both times we decided we were just going to have a few and then go eat somewhere. Both times we ended up enjoying the cheap drinks a little too much and ended up having a blast at their dingy, dark underground bar. I loved this bar. First, the bartenders all seem mad cool. Maybe it was the whiskey ginger ale mix with the Natty Boh on the side, but the bartenders all seemed friendly and eager to pour strong drinks. I would love to say that the food is awesome but we never ate here. However, I can say that judging from the HH menu of both drinks AND food, I imagine you can't go wrong spending your hard earned dough here. read more

A decent spot if you're feeling Asian food, but indecisive on which: chinese, Japanese or korean? Aloha sushi burrito 4/5 - nicely wrapped and compact with salmon, imitation crab and masago. Solid choice if you want a quick bite. Only qualm is I wish there was more Soondubu 3/5 - unfortunately left a lot to be desired. All the ingredients of a traditional bowl were there (tofu, kimchee, etc.) but flavor was really poorly lacking. Not enough salt or spicy kick. Wait staff 5/5 - shout out to our waiter who handled a part of 8 after the monument lighting rush read more

Damn good sushi. I know. Not super helpful but kinda! I've gotten sick before from bad sushi so I'm always leery of trying new spots. Aloha sushi was fantastic in portion size, flavor, and menu choice. And I didn't upchuck after eating their food, so all I know is they have damn good sushi. read more

the sushi was great, and I love relaxed atmosphere. the reason that this review isn't five stars is that one of the servers stood over me the entire time I was signing my check. it was incredibly uncomfortable. be aware that an 18% tip is already calculated into your total. I was not informed of this when the check was provided. But, the dining experience, before the check, was great! read more

This place used to be my goto spot for sushi and now...i don't know what it's going for. They only offer a limited sushi menu and it's not everyday. The quality of the sushi is definitely not the same as before and they are more focused on being a bar than its food. Have to sadly find a new sushi spot. read more

Aloha Sushi has been my favorite sushi restaurant for years. I stop going for serval months because they had a racist staff. I recently resumed dining here over the last few months. I'm big on customer service and if I don't receive the proper service I will stop dinning at your establishment. The food is always fresh and delicious. I haven't had any issue since resume my dinning experience here. I love the following items: lasagna, miso soup, shrimp yaki soba and the spicy crab roll. I recommend dining at this spot especially if your a sushi lover! Food is good, prices are reasonable and portion sizes are great! read more

This is one of those times where you're eating the sushi and simultaneously thinking "i hope i don't get sick from this". Everything had a faintly sour taste to it, so I didn't eat the entire meal. Definitely wouldn't go back. Edit - I definitely didn't get food poisoning from the food but after eating at Aloha, I felt queasy and a bit nauseous for several hours after. 0/10, would absolutely not return. read more

Two of my friends and I decided to visit Aloha at around 9:00 on a Thursday night. I've been going to Aloha for years now and prior to yesterday had never been disappointed with their service or quality of food. I called prior to coming in to make sure they were still able to make sushi orders and the two people I spoke with on the phone both let me know it was okay to come in. I got there at about 9:30, and we didn't get greeted until about 9:50. I understand it could have been busy though, so I looked past that. However, the service was not only SLOW, but our server was extremely rude. A roll nobody even ordered was added to my bill after we specified that we didn't order it, my friend asked a question regarding allergies about one of the rolls and the server said he'd "ask about it" but he put the order in without ever doing that, and he thought it'd be a good idea to wait until EVERY other order came out to tell me they couldn't make the roll i ordered about 30+ minutes prior. I'm a server myself so I understand the stress he could have potentially been under, but he went about said "stress" in the worst way. Plus after the first 20 minutes of us being there we were the only table sitting upstairs I'll make sure to never come back past 5 pm. read more

I ordered the fried calamari. They serve it as a raw dough and uncooked and said that's how they make it and it's nonrefundable. It's dangerous to eat and awful. Loved the food, drinks, and chill atmosphere here. The Spicy Salmon Poke had a variation of delicious flavors that complimented each other. This dish brought spiciness, sweetness, and just the right amount of acidity to a bowl of fluffy rice. Keep in mind the Salmon Poke bowl uses raw salmon. I would definitely order this dish again. It was delicious and went well with the peach mojito, which was strong but still tasted great! The Chicken Ramen was also flavorful and an enjoyable traditional dish. The spring rolls were some of the best I've ever had! The ingredients were fresh inside, cooked to perfection, and not overly greasy. I will most definitely be returning here. I noticed they had many regulars that came rolling in as well. read more

I'll just make this review an anecdote. Me and my friend got 8 pieces of nigiri and four tasty rolls (shrimp+avocado, avocado, fried tuna, yellowtail). We ate so much fish our stomachs started swimming. The bill was $20. My review: Full belly, full wallet. read more

Update: I have to amend my review. Aloha can be great if youre lucky enough for everything to be done right the first time. If you have any issues, they will not be resolved. Got the tuna poke tonight and half the tuna had tough, inedible tendon running through it. Pointed this out to the water and he said, "uhh I dont think there's anything I can do about that." Sir, there is something you can do. The chef can remake it. Solid sushi, tasted fresh, and the nagiri was delicious and proportioned very well. I was impressed! The complimentary miso soup was a nice touch. If you're trying to choose between Aloha and XS, hands down go Aloha. Only reason for 4 stars v 5 is that I asked the sushi chef if he could cut our rolls into 8 pieces instead of 6 and was told, "no." I just find that the bites are really big when the rolls are cut into 6 pieces. I have never been to a sushi restaurant that could not meet this request. Overall the experience was great. I will definitely be coming back! read more

I used to pass this place. A lot. Laughed because it was named Aloha Sushi and it wasn't in Hawaii. That for me was a deal breaker from the jump. But I walked in and... Cool place. Nice atmosphere. Cool chicks tending bar. Decent specials. The sushi is yummers. We ordered the red snapper nigiri sushi roll and spicy tuna and both were great. Also got the miso soup. And on separate occasions tried the calamari, chicken and fries. I know and love sushi and for them to be named "Aloha Sushi" and not be in Hawaii, well, to say the least, I was skeptical (as aforementioned). But I have been there several times now, nothing but good vibes, decent specials, yummy food and cool people. I like it. I'll go back. Don't pass it like I did. Check it out. You might be surprised by it's unassuming nature and laid back atmosphere. In a good way, of course :) read more

While everybody breaks their pockets & wallets on fancy decorative sushi rolls, Aloha is definitely the place to be to get your moneys worth. I literally purchased at least 2 basic rolls, a specialty roll, & topped it off w/a bottle of Asahi...All under $40. Definitely got my moneys worth. And let's not forget the downstairs bar area where the happy hour and a couple of long islands can set you straight for the rest of the night. read more

I happened upon this hidden treasure during a horrendous snow storm/ blizzard we had in 2010. It was the weekend I moved into my current location. The snow was so bad that I moved into my spot the DAY before it began snowing (this is after I moved my moving day up after all the warnings that it was gonna be bad one) and I was not able to move my car for 10 days (trees fell, 6 ft. snow drifts, I couldn't even open my back door - I couldn't see out the door due to the snow). Businesses were closed and basically, MD, DC and VA shut down due to this storm. That said, after I began unpacking, I was slowly getting cabin fever (CALGON, TAKE ME AWAAAAY!!!). I HAD TO get out of the house. I threw on my boots, scarf, hat & parka and headed outside. All public transportation was 'limited' due to the weather so I walked downtown. After getting my sanity back and taking in the nice crisp winter air I decided I would walk back to my place (a very long walk - especially in 4-6 ft. of snow) - but hey, what else do I have to do ... so I began my walk ... which I realized was a COMPLETE ascension. The entire walk was on a steady incline (OMG! ARE YOU SEIOUS w/ this mess?!?!? DAYUM!!!) As I get closer to my 'hood, I notice that the spot that I used to frequent (Henry & Jeff's, which closed down eons ago), sprouted a new moniker. It was now a place called 'Aloha Sushi'. The name, I wasn't a fan of - It just sounded WAY TOO cheesy. I mean - how is a Hawaiian Japanese fusion sounding restaurant w/ neon lighting even going to be CLOSE to palatable? I was however, hot, tired and sweaty from this walk. AND ... it was the ONLY place open during this crappy weather. I figured I could go in and cool down and get some water or tea ... then begin my trek again. I step inside and my trepidation is quickly quelled. There are two areas. 1) a main dining room upstairs and 2) a bar / karaoke room, downstairs. I head upstairs and was quickly greeted and shown a seat. I look over a sizable menu w/ many options and after skimming and asking appropriate questions, I settle on some seaweed salad, couple normal sushi rolls and something that sounded interesting to me - 'Seafood Sushi Lasagna'.... Say whaaaaaaaat?!?!? Oh yeah, I'mma try me some-o-this! While waiting, I' am brought some tea, a small house salad w/ this AMAZING ginger dressing - OMG! I wish I could bottle that stuff!), and a cup of scrumptious MISO soup. PAY DIRT!! I am one happy camper right now... Oh - did I mention - that was all FREE!!! Yep - u read right! Soup, salad and green tea - all FREE!!! DOPENESS!!! Out comes my meal and my experience only got better from there. The sushi rolls were awesome and this 'seafood sushi lasagna' (I chose the salmon version) was ... in a word ... AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I think a tear actually ran down my cheek ... (I tend to do that when food is above par). Essentially, it's a standard sushi roll (either salmon, tuna, shrimp or scallop) and that is bottom layer. Then they put this orange creamy sauce on top, drizzled w/ a little bit of roe. Then a layer of your selected fish, cubed and spread on top. A little more sauce then it's thrown in the broiler for a minute and served to you. (you can get the sriracha sauce on top as well. I'm personally not a fan of all that fire messing up my taste experience but hey, you might be so GO FOR IT!!!). This oowey gooey savory treat is the REASON I was MEANT to stop in this spot. To this day, when I go there. I ALWAYS get the 'lasagna' and whatever else. So, if you enjoy messy, sloppy food (aye, I'm a NY'er - I love messy food) and enjoy sushi - this is a MUST DO!! Needles to say, my walk back through the rest of the snow was a cake-walk now that my gullet was full and my behind was feelin nice off the sake ... UPDATE: I stopped by 'Aloha Sushi' last week and had my regular ... BUT they no longer have the free green tea, salad and miso. They were losing money and with this CRAZY economy, had to charge for it ... but at $1 a pop, it's still a great deal! Trust me - that miso & that salad dressing is NO JOKE!! I don't know why, but they also go by the name 'Aloha Tokyo'. Confusing but true. Just a lil FYI for you ... read more

After getting takeout from Aloha before, I decided to come in and sit down for some sushi and drinks with friends. Our service was pretty awful. We didn't order much at all, but it took forever and one of our drinks got forgotten. The drinks themselves were heavy pours, but were not the well crafted cocktails they advertise to be, and certainly not worth a hefty $14 (a price that they won't show on the menu). By the time we got the drinks, they handed us the check and rushed us out the door. read more

My boyfriend and I found out about Aloha Sushi through www.restaurant.com last summer and decided to try it out. The certificate was good for $25 off of a $40 tab, excluding alcohol and gratuity. Aloha Sushi is in the Mount Vernon area and there isn't much to the building or the decor, but the service was great. Our waitress seated us by the window and we ordered a massive amount of sushi. It all came out on a huge plate and we couldn't even finish it all. Using the certificate, our bill came to $30 and we added a generous tip on top of that because the food and service was so good. Unfortunately, Aloha Sushi is no longer participating in the coupons with restaurant.com, but it is still a great place to eat. There are a lot of sushi places to eat in Baltimore and I can't say that this is the best, but it's pretty good. read more

Aloha sushi is a good sushi spot close to University of Baltimore in Mid-town/Belvedere. They are reasonably priced for dinner- $2.50-$6.00 for basic rolls (cucumber roll, spicy tuna roll, etc.- comes with 6 pieces per roll) and speciality rolls range from $10-$15 (comes with 8 pieces per roll). Aloha is also on Spotluck, so you can get anywhere from 10-20% off (depending on the spin). In terms of the rolls, the white and green monsters are my favorite. The rolls were made fresh in a sushi bar in the center of the restaurant. Eveything was great, however, I wasn't a huge fan of the Super Maryland roll, it was baked and had a little too much filler. Other than that, the service was great, there is a full bar downstairs, and a liquor store next door. Definitely worth a try! read more

I've been coming to Aloha Sushi for about 4 months. I love their poki bowls and the atmosphere. Unfortunately, Friday was total BS. We waited for an entire hour for chicken teriyaki and stuffed shrimp. We had every right to be upset, but the manager (I'm guessing she was a manager, she refunded me my money) was rude, inconsiderate, and had the audacity to have an attitude with us when we asked for our money back. Oh, and she was smacking gum while she was talking to me and my boyfriend. Her exact quote was "well we'll give their food to someone who wants it." I swear it took every cell in my body not to cuss her out. Zack (the guy with the long black hair) was working his ass off. He's the only reason why I'm giving the place one star. read more

This is a nice spot for lunch if you are in the Mount Vernon area. I've come a couple of times now and have really enjoyed myself. I've come for lunch between 11 and 12 and they're usually only one or two other customers. The decor inside is also really nice with plenty of sunlight and tables. The lunch deals are great! They have bento box lunches that were amazing. They come with miso soup, tempura shrimp and veggies, steamed veggies, a dumpling, steamed, rice, California rolls and your choice of meat I recommend getting the bbq beef! It was tender and cooked perfectly with just enough sauce. I also tried some of their sushi and while they were on the smaller side, they were still fresh and tasty. The service here is excellent. The food came out quickly and our waitress was very attentive to our needs. She checked on us several times to see if we needed water or anything else. The only thing that bugs me is when Asian restaurants offer the cheap, disposable wooden chopsticks that give you splinters. I wish they would offer plastic or metal ones. read more
