Have you ever been to a mega church in SF, LA, or NYC? You know how they all have coffee bars before and after service? Take that image in your head, stick it in Kapa'a, and you've got Aloha Roastery. In the greater scheme of things, they'd probably be a dime a dozen hipster coffee shop in any major metropolis. But here on Kauai, it's hands-down the best coffee shop in terms of overall appeal to tourists and city folk (the best coffee shop in terms of Kauai vibes is Java Kai, of course.) The coffee here is fantastic and their pastries are to die for. The people who work here are kind. They can get quite slammed, as they only staff about 2 people at a time - as I write this, there is probably a back order of 15 drinks and people waiting patiently in the sleekly designed wooden chairs, tables, and countertops (god I love wood design.) So if you can get over the major Christian megachurch vibes, it's a great place to be. (Saying this as a former megachurch goer - not my thing, but the people are nice.) read more

Compared to my last trip to Kauai, the coffee on the island has improved by light years. And leading that change is Aloha Roastery, with their Lihue and Kapa'a locations. Simple, clean aesthetics, and a minimal menu combine with high quality for a fantastic experience. The mac nut kouign amann was particularly spectacular. This coffee shop is so aesthetic and refreshing! Stopped in around 9:30AM on a weekday and there were a few folks working/studying on laptops. There was at least one outlet I noticed but didn't look for others. I got an iced americano black (~$3). It had no bitterness but also didn't have any sweetness. I don't want to say it was too watery either -- just light and balanced. I'm not a frequent coffee-er but have noticed americanos in NY are on the sweet side and LA are on the more bitter side so it was interesting to taste...neither? Just coffee?? Mild? Idk how to describe it but I liked it. The folks I was with got an iced mocha (~$4.50). It was lightly sweet too but kind of too milky and not coffee-tasting enough. The butter croissant (~$3.50) was SO amazingly flaky, light, soft yet still had that little crunch when you take a bite. Overall I'd describe this place as aesthetic, light, and refreshing. If I lived on Kauai I'd study here often :-) read more

I was on the hunt for a good cup of caffeine this morning and stumbled upon this place. Spartan interior (all the seats were taken by hip, studious-looking types) and not overly friendly woman behind the counter, but fast and one of the best pour overs I've had anywhere! The price was reasonable for the rest of the islands. If you are in the mood for a great cup of coffee, consider giving this no-frills roastery a try. read more

stayed at the Royal Sonesta hotel nearby and every morning found myself driving to Aloha Roastery for exceptional coffee. Their pastries are excellent (get there early so you do not miss out), the staff is friendly and the ambience super relaxed.
