At approximately 7:40 PM, I visited the establishment to grab a meal, but I witnessed a staff member working at the food station coughing repeatedly directly over the open food displays. While doing so, she was wiping down the counter and continuing her tasks without turning away, wearing a mask, or taking any precautions. Seeing a staff member cough directly onto the food is completely unacceptable and a major health violation. Needless to say, I left immediately without ordering. I am sharing this in the hope that management will take this seriously. Employees showing signs of illness should not be working with food, and basic hygiene protocols must be enforced to protect your customers. You order and pay at the counter and they will bring you the food; the lady at the counter was extremely friendly and very efficient. You need to bus your own table when you're done, just place the used dishes, glasses and utensils in the labeled plastic tubs, not a big deal at all. Now, the food is the star. We order baba ganoush with pita, super gyro with zucchini fries, and a soup and salad combo. The baba ganoush was so delicious, and the pita was warm and soft. The super gyro has so much yummy meat in it that the pita can hardly hold them, and the zucchini fries were crispy and not oily. It also comes with a couple really good tzatziki sauces. My wife really enjoyed the avgolemono (lemon and chicken) soup and greek salad. She was so pleased with the combo that she had to order an extra takeout combo for her friend to try. My wife and I stopped at Yama's Mediterranean Inspired Cuisine in Kailua because we wanted to try their food. Unfortunately, we never got the opportunity. I entered with my service dog, and the woman behind the cash register immediately gave us an unmistakable look of disgust. She then asked what service my dog performed and proceeded to suggest that many people have "fake" service dogs. I found the manner in which these questions were asked to be deeply disrespectful and humiliating. I even offered to show her documentation regarding my service dog and explained that he is recognized through Hawaii's animal-quarantine process. She told me that there was no such registration system. Based on my experience, I believe that statement was incorrect. At that point, my wife and I simply said that it was clear we were not welcome and decided to leave. We never received any food, and Yama's lost the opportunity to earn our business. What makes this experience particularly disappointing for me is that I am a U.S. Air Force veteran who served 28 years of faithful and honorable military service. I even had my veteran ball cap on. I have spent much of my life serving and supporting others, and I believe everyone deserves to be treated with basic dignity and respect. There is a proper way to address legitimate questions about service animals. There is also a proper way to treat customers. In our case, we experienced neither. I sincerely hope the management of Yama's takes this incident seriously and ensures that future customers--particularly veterans and people who rely on service animals--are treated with the courtesy, dignity, and respect they deserve. We came to try the food. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome and judged. Based on this experience, we will not be returning ever.
