Authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in Honolulu, Hawaii... I first saw the Surfer's Wife booth at the Kailua Farmer's Market one Sunday morning. I was in a rush, so I didn't stop by. However, I did take a photo because the word, "Fawaffle" - on the banner - caught my interest! Plus, the name of the business, Surfer's Wife, is catchy! This past Saturday morning at the Kaka'ako Farmer's Market (enter from Auahi Street, near Ward Avenue), I was so happy to see the Fawaffle sign again! I took some time to ask a few questions... Yonatan, the enthusiastic, patient, and knowledgeable owner, is from Israel. The beautiful, tasty dishes are prepared in a commercial kitchen and brought to Honolulu and kept in coolers until purchased. The displays are very educational and easy to understand. I got the 8-pack of green (traditional flavor) Fawaffles. They're frozen, packed in ziplock bags, and are easy to heat up at home in a toaster oven for a slight crisp. They are healthier than falafel because Fawaffles aren't deep fried. I also got the 3 for $15 deal - Israeli Picked Slaw, Fresh Hummus, and Dolmas. The slaw was crunchy and nicely tart... I couldn't stop eating it! The fresh Hummus paired well with some multigrain chips that i had at home. The dolmas are like dimsum dumplings - wrapped in grape leaves and stuffed with tasty herbed rice! Overall, this meal was excellent! It was better than the food i ate when I went to The Holy Land in 2011! Haha! Come get some delicious Middle Eastern cuisine at a reasonable price!

I love their hummus and crackers. The owner (Yonatan) is always so friendly and very knowledgeable about his products.

5.0 stars Shaloha Pita is an absolute must-visit if you are…read morein Honolulu! We stayed for five days and ended up eating here three separate times--it is that good. Every single dish tastes incredibly fresh and clean. The hummus is remarkably smooth, and the pita is a game-changer. It is impossibly soft, almost like a cross between a classic, pillowy pita and a Hawaiian roll. If you go, do not skip the Shaloha Plate. The portions are huge--one plate easily fed me, my husband, and our toddler. To show you how much we fell in love with this spot: on our final day, we placed an order to take with us on the way to the airport. When delivery was running behind, we couldn't bear the thought of missing out, so we made a detour to pick it up ourselves before catching our flight. Having traveled to Israel and eaten at many fantastic local spots there, I can honestly say this is some of the best Israeli food I've ever had. Do not miss it!

Limited parking in the parking lot, but there's also some street parking. Friendly staff. My order was made quickly, little wait time. This is an order and go kind of place. No seating. Got the Shaloha plate this time, which is my favorite on the menu. It comes with everything. It literally weighs like 2 pounds. This plate can be shared by 2 ppl. If I eat it by myself I can make 3-4 meals out of it. The veggies are fresh every time. The plate is packed with flavor.

I am so glad that we finally visited Yamas; it is located in the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center in…read moreKailua with lots of free parking. The restaurant is super clean and spacious, and they play some awesome classic rock music. You order and pay at the counter and they will bring you the food; the lady at the counter was extremely friendly and very efficient. You need to bus your own table when you're done, just place the used dishes, glasses and utensils in the labeled plastic tubs, not a big deal at all. Now, the food is the star. We order baba ganoush with pita, super gyro with zucchini fries, and a soup and salad combo. The baba ganoush was so delicious, and the pita was warm and soft. The super gyro has so much yummy meat in it that the pita can hardly hold them, and the zucchini fries were crispy and not oily. It also comes with a couple really good tzatziki sauces. My wife really enjoyed the avgolemono (lemon and chicken) soup and greek salad. She was so pleased with the combo that she had to order an extra takeout combo for her friend to try. On top of all that, we finished our great meal with a baklava sundae; two fresh crispy baklava pastries with a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with cinnamon and honey. This desert is a must order. The restaurant is mixed in with a lot of other restaurants and shops in a large strip mall, so it maybe easy to miss. The prices are really reasonable and the portions are good. If you like Mediterranean food; this is the place. You will love it.

Extremely Disappointing and Unwelcoming Experience: i would leave a zero but there's no choice for…read morethat. My wife and I stopped at Yama's Mediterranean Inspired Cuisine in Kailua because we wanted to try their food. Unfortunately, we never got the opportunity. I entered with my service dog, and the woman behind the cash register immediately gave us an unmistakable look of disgust. She then asked what service my dog performed and proceeded to suggest that many people have "fake" service dogs. I found the manner in which these questions were asked to be deeply disrespectful and humiliating. I even offered to show her documentation regarding my service dog and explained that he is recognized through Hawaii's animal-quarantine process. She told me that there was no such registration system. Based on my experience, I believe that statement was incorrect. At that point, my wife and I simply said that it was clear we were not welcome and decided to leave. We never received any food, and Yama's lost the opportunity to earn our business. What makes this experience particularly disappointing for me is that I am a U.S. Air Force veteran who served 28 years of faithful and honorable military service. I even had my veteran ball cap on. I have spent much of my life serving and supporting others, and I believe everyone deserves to be treated with basic dignity and respect. There is a proper way to address legitimate questions about service animals. There is also a proper way to treat customers. In our case, we experienced neither. I sincerely hope the management of Yama's takes this incident seriously and ensures that future customers--particularly veterans and people who rely on service animals--are treated with the courtesy, dignity, and respect they deserve. We came to try the food. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome and judged. Based on this experience, we will not be returning ever.
