Whenever we are traveling, finding a Hawaiian restaurant for some loco Moco is high on our list. We were excited to find Aloha Hawaiian BBQ on a recent trip to Ann Arbor. We stopped in around lunchtime and were greeted right away. You place your order at the counter and then they bring it out to you when it's ready. The restaurant itself is pretty drab. So if you are looking for a nice sit down restaurant, this is not it. They seem to do mostly carry out and food delivery service orders. We both ordered the loco Moco and we always remember after we start eating that we need to share. lol Overall the dish was good. We both felt that the hamburger patties could have been seasoned better and the egg less overcooked. The rice was the perfect level of stickiness and the macaroni salad was really good and perfectly creamy. We both thought the macaroni salad was the best part of the dish. We would eat here again, just share the dish next time. read more

Was really excited to try this place. The kalbi portion was good, 2 scoops of rice and 3 strips of Kalbi and side of Mac and cheese. $19 The kalbi was little too bland. Wish it was a bit sweeter and more flavorful. The Mac and cheese was also on the bland side. Also for dining in, the food comes out in a to go box so trying to cut the ribs was little difficult. But overall friendly staff, clean restaurant and food comes out pretty quick read more

Ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and spring rolls through DoorDash. The sauce was the right amount and the chicken was done perfectly. I also ordered a side of white rice to go with it. It was delicious and the chicken just fell apart with my fork. That's when you know it was done perfectly! The service was pretty fast for the DoorDasher to pick it up. The Service was fast and we were served pretty quickly. The food was made to order and the chicken katsu plate was worth it! If you've ever had L&L Hawaiian BBQ, this is very close if not along the same level! We enjoyed the combo plate. A good amount of seating available too! Food was service was quick and it came out hot. We dined in and observed a steady stream of takeout orders. I was in town for a class, and Hawaiian for dinner sounded like just the ticket. Aloha is a small place, it seems like they do a brisk carryout business. They have a lot of different protein options, and I appreciate the combo platters. I got katsu chicken and pork. It comes with rice and mac salad, and sauteed cabbage. Both proteins we're tasty and large portions. The sides were ok, nothing special. Meals are served in clamshell containers and you can get chopsticks or plastic utensils. I also got garlic spam musubi, which was a large double piece portion, the seaweed was slightly soggy and the taste was off. I'd give it a 3.5 if that was an option, but I'll go with 4. read more

I don't know about the Hawaiian fare here but I was unimpressed by the sushi. It was cheap, yes, but you get what you pay for. I got mine to go which was not smart either. First off they got my order wrong. I got three of the same rolls instead of the three different I asked for. The fish was fresh and nice but the rolls were super tiny, mostly veg and bland as heck. I ordered some canned pop to go with. That bag was hot boxed. I mean I have no issue with Marijuana but the smell is far from the best part. Not a happy thing to bring to lunch at work either. The miso soup however was fantastic. Seriously. Saved me on a rainy day with bland ass sushi and my boss side eyeing me over a bag of diet freaking coke. read more

What can I say the food is phenomenal! A nice refresher from the same old same old food. I've tried every meat they have to offer and I just can't get enough! The bbq chicken is so tender and juicy. The katsu is perfected with the sauce! The Hawaiian drinks are a must try. I for one love the macaroni salad. I def recommended getting a combo plate to try as much as possible. There is plenty of parking. The place has tables inside. It's a cute little spot to just go and hang with friends. I really want to try the sushi and ramen next but I well ordering meats over and over and it never gets old! HBBQ is one of my favorite guilty pleasures from my grad school era. BBQ chicken is tasty, filling, and hard to go wrong with. This place is family-run and has a friendly service and no frills. They also offer some Sichuan appetizers, such as 夫妻肺片 and ramen. Their ramen is super basic and uninspiring, but it's still better than most ramen from Japanese restaurants here in Ann Arbor after my last disappointing experience. read more

Got delivery from here and it exceeded expectations! We got the Aloha BBQ mix with BBQ beef, chicken, and kalbi short rib, a Loco Moco, and spam musubi. All the meats in the BBQ mix were fantastic - very tender, savory, sweet, smokey. The loco moco was good, kind of felt like eating a cheeseburger of sorts, maybe could've had more of the brown gravy. The spam musubi was ok, and better with the sweet glaze that came with it. Each of the mains came with rice and macaroni salad. The latter was creamy but not too heavy with a lighter flavor to let the meats shine. Also got a strawberry guava juice to try - good but too sweet for me. Delivery was fast and the food arrived hot. Found the place by accident, but looks like the old Chopsticks Chinese restaurant folded and Aloha took over. I can't tell if the owners changed or not, however interior remains the same as before, nothing changed inside. Glad to see a new restaurant type opening up in Ann Arbor, always open to diversity of food offerings. I stopped by, ordered: - Aloha BBQ Mix - Spam Musubi (2 pcs) Let's start with Musuhi. This item by itself, I would give zero out of 5 stars. It was basically spam on top of rice wrapped with nori. Sadly, the rice was not seasoned, but they could gotten away with that had they added some teriyaki sauce between the rice and the spam, but yeah plain vanilla flavor as it can get unfortunately. Would not recommend unless they make the changes. Aloha BBQ Mix - comes with macaroni salad, two scopes of rice, beef, chicken thighs and one kalbi. Macaroni - no seasoning, very bland. Kalbi - very chewy Sliced Beef - perfectly seasoned and something that I would get again Chicken - decent, while juicy and moist, could use more seasoning Overall, decent new restaurant and look forward to their offerings. In addition to the Hawaiian bbq options, they have udon, ramen, fried seafood and sushi rolls. For now, I give them 3 out of 5, honestly no major "wow" factor after initial first visit. We were excited to try Hawaiian food in AA. The restaurant is located in a strip plaza the chicken was underwhelming and lacking in flavor. The macaroni salad also lacked in flavor. We ordered a grilled sampler plate, the meat was mediocre quality and tough to chew, normally short rib is very tender we were not anxious to continue to eat. We left most of the food. I hope that they will improve on the quality of the food, as I have eaten very good Hawaiian food. I don't know if I would spend thirty dollars to give them a try again. read more

I got super excited when I saw Aloha Hawaiian BBQ was opening in town as my husband and I spent our honeymoon there and I fell in love with the food. I had a hard time choosing what I wanted to order as they had more than a few things I wanted to try on the menu. In the end I got the Aloha BBQ Mix which came with BBQ beef, BBQ chicken, and Kalbi short ribs. A little taste of everything! It came with a side of macaroni salad and rice. Everything was quite good but in the end I think the short ribs may have been my favorite. I'm not sure if I'd order it again, not because I didn't like it but because there are so many things I still want to try like their kalua pork, the loco moco, an order of katsu musubi for lunch. Speaking of smaller lunch prices they do also have "mini meals" on the menu featuring smaller portions and a lower price point. They also have sushi, udon, and ramen. But when I come in I'm definitely going to be going for their Hawaiian offerings. Also, it's not BBQ so I understand it not being offered but I would be ever so happy if once and a while they offered a garlic shrimp special like they serve at the shrimp trucks in Hawaii. I have tried to recreate this wonderful dish so many times at home but haven't nailed it. I feel like the pros at Aloha Hawaiian could make it happen, though! Ordered delivery so it always takes a bit of a hit in freshness. One thing I can say about this place is it seems like a great value for the money. The spam musubi were serviceable, maybe a bit too much rice imo, and usually there is some type of glaze on them, I feel like? I'd order again if I had a spam craving though. Chicken katsu MINI was a huge portion, like I could only eat half and I have a big appetite. It was fine. The only bummer was the macaroni salad. Super bland (just noodles and sauce, no veg mixed in for texture) and it was warm from being in the container with the katsu. Maybe have it packed in a separate little container for delivery? As I'm writing this I'm considering returning a second time! It was so good! I called in my order and even asked for them to customize my musubi order and they did it at no cost. I got one chicken katsu and one spam musubi. Both were very good. It came with sauce but I also got a few different sauces to try. One was a teriyaki sauce and the other two were also brown but I do not know the name. It was all good so I just kept using all the sauces. I got a side of macaroni salad and a house salad as well. For just $2, the house salad was a good portion in my opinion. The macaroni salad was okay. I wish it had more herbs or veggies or something to enhance the flavor. This place is pretty good for what it is. Hawaiian BBQ if it doesn't make you sleepy then it's not legit and this place is legit. I grew up on the west coast eating at a specific chain from Hawaii and this is as close to that chain. But I do have to say sometimes the mac salad can be a hit or miss because sometimes it gets overcooked and soggy to where the flavor is ruined. My husband and I love Hawaii and miss the food there, so we were more than excited to see this restaurant pop up while searching for somewhere to eat in Ann Arbor. Was excited to try something different in this area, a Hawaiian barbecue grill. They drew me in with their BOGO Cali roll deal on Ubereats that I think ended. To be honest, that was the best part of the meal. Meats are Chinese takeout quality. I appreciate the variety you can get here but I wouldn't come back for it. Dry and not much flavor, but affordable and will fill you up. The most disappointing thing was the sides that come with most of the meals, a scoop of plain white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad, both completely flavorless. Really needed some spices. Also, it would be nice if you could substitute a side for, say, mixed vegetables, even for a small up charge. The plates looked as monotonous as they tasted, even a pinch of some green garnish would go a long way here... All in all, wouldn't go back. A good friend of mine used to work for a Hawaiian joint in Lansing a number of years ago and used to make me Loco Moco with mac salad on occasion; due to this, I get cravings, but there's a real lack of Hawaiian joints in MI, so when this popped up, I knew I had to try it. I came after an appointment, a kind of off time, so it wasn't busy and the food was up fast, got it to go as that's my preference these days, but I did take a quick first bite in the car. Honestly, it's just okay. I think the mac salad is made with reg mayo or something....it's just not quite right, bland like someone else said. Rice and eggs were cooked right, with eggs crispy on the edges but still runny, and gravy had a nice taste, but....I feel like the patties weren't quite seasoned right either? Sounds like they just opened and there's lots of other options, but if you were looking at the Loco Moco with mac salad....it needs some work. read more

It's really closer to 3.5 stars but I'll round up. The portions are quite generous which is nice but the chicken katsu combo doesn't actually come with cabbage to keep the chicken crispy, but I had to ask about it as the combos say they are served with rice, Mac salad and cabbage. The spam musubi seemed promising at first but the sweet glaze on the spam is served on the side for dipping rather than brushed onto the spam itself which is how it's actually prepared back in Hawaii, and how I would have preferred it served as well. I enjoyed the chicken katsu although the macaroni salad could use some veg in it. I ate in and service was kind enough to bring my order to me to where I was seated despite there being signage around the restaurant that there's no table service as this is a fast casual restaurant. I was excited to try this place when I saw that they had opened. We ordered grilled salmon with teriyaki sauce, Hawaiian chicken barbecue, and curry chicken. They came with cabbage, rice, and macaroni salad. All three entrees were very bland. You do get a lot of food and it's fairly inexpensive, so that's a plus. My true review would be a 3.5 and to be fair my review could be biased due to my own tendencies in the foods, I like. The inside is set up as a fast casual establishment, walk in order your food grab your own drinks and utensils and the cashier will bring your food in styrofoam containers. First off I love their offerings of different Hawaiian juices. The two we had were great. We ordered two combos to try a little of everything. All their combos come with rice and macaroni salad. I absolutely hate macaroni salad and upon trying theirs still had the same dislike, however, if you like macaroni salad will probably enjoy theirs. I hope they allow you to sub for more rice or something else in the future. The chicken katsu is a 3 out of 5, the sauce that comes with is thicker version than I am used to but ok. The Kalua pork was my biggest disappointment, basically just taste like bbq pulled pork without any bbq sauce. The bbq chicken was good 3 out 5. My favorite was the Kalbi and bbq beef 4 out of 5, the Kalbi is not as flavorful as their Korean counterparts, but pretty solid. Just my opinion, but since they offer sushi, I think they would be better off getting rid of their sushi menu and offering Hawaiian style poke instead. This restaurant is puzzling as it seems to get some things right and others wrong. If you are eating at a Hawaiian restaurant chances are you might have lived in or visited Hawaii a lot and know something about Hawaiian BBQ restaurants, particularly this kind that specialize in 'plate lunch', which is meat, 2 scoops rice, 1 scoop macaroni salad. Very popular in Hawaii. The basic plate lunch is usually a beef (or chicken) teriyaki. Strips of very tender beef (or chicken) in a teriyaki sauce. Not so in this restaurant. It was served as 'BBQ' beef, served as small cuts of dry beef chips with a vague sauce over it. The Hawaii variation of macaroni salad is perhaps one of the things most tasty about a Hawaiian plate lunch and this restaurant falls very short. This macaroni salad is a generic creamy dish like you could get in a grocery store. The spring rolls are also a generic variety of 'frozen then fried' you can get in any Asian take-out place. A last negative - for a small strip mall restaurant where you will spend 40 to 50 dollars for plate lunches for two and soft drink - it isn't a positive thing for the staff to let their pre-school kids run yelling and screaming through the restaurant completely out of control. But this brings us to the puzzling part. They DO get some things right! They have a bbq chicken masubi that is as good as any you can get in Hawaii. The short ribs are plentiful, done right and very tasty. The menu has many other items than I mentioned but am I tempted to come back and sample more? I think not. The expensive price and screaming kids - and they can't make an authentic Hawaiian macaroni salad - doesn't do the trick for me. read more
