The cafe is in a prime location, so you can't help but notice it when driving on Carrollton Avenue. I was first introduced to Alma Cafe at NOWFE's Grand Tasting a few years ago. The oysters I had that day were unforgettable. I was excited to finally dine in the restaurant. The restaurant is welcoming and well-appointed. The staff is ok. Delicious!!! I see what the rave is about. The food and the service is fenomenal. And a delicious Michelada to boot! (Best in Town). Went there for brunch either a party of 11! They were so caring and acomodating! We pretty much ordered the whole brunch menu. The portions are quite large so none of us could finish a portion so I recommend sharing. Love coming here! It's a great spot to take your friends from out of town for brunch/lunch-- my friends/family are always impressed. Plus, there are tons of food & drink options so everyone's guaranteed to find something they would like. (The Bloody Mary's are really good.) My favorite item on the menu is the Platno Maduro (This is a fried sweet plantain with refried beans, homemade cream, and queso fresco on top.) IT IS SOOO good and actually a very authentic dish. Not something common that we eat in the states. You definitely have to try it. I also loveeee the chilaquiles and the espresso is good quality. my mom really likes the Louisiana crab toast. Eaten here a few times...mostly at the old location. Just dined at the new location last week and it is not the same restaurant. Level of quality has tanked! Even simple items were difficult to complete to previous levels. Pancakes burned, micro greens vs cilantro in the huevos rancheros. Talked to the manager and he acknowledged that this is no where near the James Beard level of quality. Stated that they didn't have the same staff come to the new location. Waiter was struggling and needed more training. Not sure if owner is aware of the issues. I seriously hope it gets back to its glory from less than a year ago!!! Friends and I decided to check the new location for Alma since they had oyster specials for Happy Hour! The location is easily accessible in Mid City in the corner of S Carrollton and Bienville. It's newly opened and totally renovated inside. I'm not a fan of the chairs they had. Not great for those who are plus size. The chargrilled oysters were okay but not all that. We also had a side of truffle fries, Anafre Hondureno, a Burger and the special Fried Fish of the day. The truffle fries lacked salt and flavor. The refined beans were great; however we were asked if we wanted more chips and didn't realize we would be charged $5 for a small bowl of them. We did really enjoy the burger and the fish although I felt they were overpriced. Their Happy Hour menu was very small. Our server Jose' made our night as did the Rum punch! I'll give them a semi pass since this was maybe their first weekend open. This isn't their first restaurant though so you'd think they'd be smoother than most. The new inside is nice. Definitely more aesthetically pleasing than a Mr. Ed's. I ordered a coffee drink to start since they don't have their liquor license yet. It didn't come out until after the food even though it was put in well before we decided on what we wanted to eat. I ordered the chilaquiles. For 18 bucks I thought they would be amazing. Great service, plenty of nice eating, and it's accessible to handicapped persons too. The Burgos rancheros was absolutely excellent! The flavors were fresh and exciting and the tortilla underneath was crispy and tasty! My eggs were scrambled perfect per my request. And the decor is so pleasant and pretty. I understand that the restaurant opened this week and want to give them some grace, but it honestly wasn't a good experience at all. We walked in and were seated immediately and our coffee order was taken after we confirmed they were still waiting for their liquor license. A few minutes later our food order was taken. Our huevos rancheros and chilaquiles arrived about 10 minutes later and our coffees arrived when we were halfway done with our entrees along with the check. It seemed a little odd to bring the check with our coffees when we were only halfway done eating. The food itself was underwhelming, the corn tortilla was so hard it was impossible to cut through and hard to chew and the beans were pretty flavorless unless you hit a tiny spot of salsa. The restaurant renovation is beautiful as well as the food presentation, but the service and food were lacking for a $50 breakfast. read more

I think the service needs some work. And I am a little disappointed that they removed all of the chicken sandwiches except one. But food is good as always. And I am glad is closer to home so I can go. I do like the original location better, but this is probably better for business. The ambiance is nice is pretty big and open space. So I happened to see the place on instagram decided to go and it did not disappoint. The place is small and intimate. Service was good. We had the Bistec Encebollado, the steak was flavorful although it could've been more tender for my liking, but everything else was great on the plate. We also had the plantain taco not sure that's what it's called but they were delicious . Also tried the beef Pupusas they had a great savory flavor. The food was amazing, my husband had the huevos ranchero with Sunnyside up eggs which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had the Corn Beef Hash . From the beginning the energy was off. We walk in and no hi hello welcome in. Just silence. It was giving closed. Then it turned around because Joseph was so nice, and the first two dishes were amazing. We had the coliflor and sambos. Crumbs on the table. We ordered a wine, and then Jarret the manager came out. His energy from the start was off. One of those energies you want to forget. that's probably why the restaurant was dead as hell on a Friday night. We move past Jarret's energy and we're thinking wow the first two dishes we had were great! Let's try something else. Then we got the bisteca. It wasn't exactly what we were expecting in Latin influenced steak. the rice and beans seemed reheated. It honestly didn't seem right. They didn't even give us a steak knife, and mind you the steak rubbery as hell. So we asked for a steak knife and Jarret said "oh I don't even think we have those" Huh? So yall serving whole unsliced steak, that's grey and rubbery without steak knives anywhere? So after I fought wars to cut a little piece off with a dinner knife. We decided we didn't like it. We didn't eat any of it really. So when Jarret finally comes back with a steak knife I ask Jarret "hey like it wasn't really what we were expecting it's rubbery, luke warm and grey the rice tastes funny it's just not great could we get it taken off the bill?" He just stares in silence. So I fill the silence and say "maybe we could do half off or something like that." Jarret's attitude is terrible. After a very long pause he goes "well what's wrong with it?" So I reiterated. He goes in the most flat tone, "that's how it's supposed to come out and there's nothing wrong with the dish". So I can see why this location is so lowly rated. Friends and I went there around 7 pm on a Tues night. Since our favorite places are closed on Tues, one of them suggested this new Alma's. I've loved the Bywater location so agreed, even though I warned them the reviews were bad. They said some people just like to complain, so they said they wanted to try it out. Firstly, they did a good job renovating the old Mr Ed's. Service was also good. Our server was pleasant and immediately greeted us, telling us about all their specials in details. None of them sounded appealing so I just ordered their burger. The rest of the table ordered the oysters and duck plate. Food came out and we dug in. My friends had small plates so i didnt sample theirs. However, they both tried, and we were all underwhelmed. Fries were not crispy. It was drenched in truffle oil and parmesan. Was missing the actual truffle slices like in the main location. Burger was super greasy with the onion spread, aioli, bacon and buttered buns. Patty itself had no taste of actual fire elements (grilled or pan fried). Was it cooked in the microwave? It tasted all one-note (soggy salty grease) that the fries just added much of the same. To make matters worse, immediate food poisoning when I got home. Nope! PS: they decided to convert their former men's and women's bathrooms to unisex ones so the one on the right has a urinal as soon as you walk in. Went today while visiting family in NOLA. We were excited to go to Alma and have some "good and bad" to share with the Yelp community. The hostess who greeted us was great and the aesthetic was beautiful upon our arrival. Our serve was prompt and we received our food promptly. There were three in our party and we ordered the following: chilaquiles, breakfast tacos and an omelet along with a Diet Coke, brown sugar espresso. The food was very beautiful but lacked seasoning as others have mentioned. The chilaquiles were our favorite of the three. Others have mentioned being "nickeled and dimed" and that was our experience as well. We asked our server for extra salsa (small plastic condiment cup" and it was a line item on the bill for $3.50!!! Literally not more than 1.5 tablespoon of salsa. The Diet Coke was $5 which doesn't seem comparable to other restaurants in NOLA. While our experience was pleasant it wasn't over the top to compensate for the nickel and dimiing. read more

It's their second weekend open in mid-city, parades were canceled today, and everyone had the same idea. We are all here! No worries though the staff is friendly, the owner is hosting today and the chatter says folx are enjoying the food and ambiance. The place is suitably packed with seats at the bar becoming premium. Wait staff are moving swiftly and adeptly through the room attending to patrons. The menu includes an extensive beverage list including mocktails, juices, and spirits. Food items vary from traditional American breakfast with a Honduran twist to flavorful classics like arroz con pollo. The bar has hooks underneath for things to hang which is such a plus, thinking about customers they get a star just for having them. There is patio seating but the rain keeps everyone inside. I'm the patio will be a favorite this spring and summer evenings. My husband says the coffee is perfect, it only needs a bit of sugar. Apparently that's how you know coffee is good when you don't have to add things to it. I'll take his word for it, I'm not a coffee drinker. I did however indulge in the Watermelon Agua Fresca and it was refreshing. It will definitely be a favorite this summer. I had the lox on toast and the grilled chicken salad both were very good. I made very happy plates. My husband had the veggies omelette and a bowl of red beans and rice. The omelette disappeared almost instantly and I barely managed a picture. By the time he made it to the bowl he was on a much steadier pace. This location can fill many expectations with good food and ample beverage options it can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner for the family, friends, casual dining, or solid relationships. The happy hour drink prices were good. The Rum punch was great. Some of the prices were crazy. A piece of fish with head and bones was $58 served with rice and beans. The appetizer has a fancy name but was just bean dip. The waiter who was awesome, friendly and friendly entertaining asked if we needed more than the 10 chips it came with. We said yes, $5. I stopped in to grab some take out. It was my first time there. I was looking forward to giving it a try. I ordered 2 small plates, the plantain dish and the meat pie dish. They were ok. I would be willing to give other food items a try but apparently from the owner down to employees are thieves. I received an email of my receipt later on that evening. And someone helped themselves to an extra $20 tip. I called immediately when the email came through and no answer. I did go back to the store to speak with the manager. He honestly did not seem surprised by this. But he did apologize and said he would return the money to my acct. I will never patronize this establishment ever again. read more

I ordered takeout. when I arrived to pick it up they said, sorry, we don't have that dish now, we refunded you. no notification so I wasted my time driving there . a day later, I saw on my credit card that they had not refunded me. I contacted the manager and he said it would take a day to go through. still no refund so I have had to file a dispute with my credit card. this comes after an in person visit when I noticed they charged 20 percent gratuity for our party of 4, without any mention of this unusual practice. such a shame to squander so much potential! read more

I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately did not have a good experience. I stopped in for dinner on a Thursday evening. I thought this was a Honduran restaurant and was disappointed to find barely any Honduran food choices on the menu. Where were the tacos Hondureñas, bistec encebollado, or a baleada... at least? All I saw were oysters, beetroot, duck, amongst other non recognizable items. We were really looking for authentic Honduran food. I ended up ordering a burger that was described on the menu to be a double party smash burger, but instead, it was one thick patty that tasted like it had been previously frozen. It was over cooked on the outside, almost raw on the inside. The bread was soggy and it was drowning in onions. Again, I really wanted to like this place and hope they can actually bring real authentic Honduran food to mid city as advertised. read more

New location, light, clean and open. It was a slow night and the service was quick. The dinner menu isn't online but we were expecting something similar to the variety on their lunch menu. We were very wrong. Extremely limited dinner menu and pricey for the quantity. $20 for 6 oysters and $28 for a burger is a little much - even for New Orleans. The biggest surprise was the extra charges on the bill - on top of the 10% New Orleans taxes they tacked on their exhibition tax and another fee of 3% titled PF Services which I'm assuming is a credit card processing fee. Keep in mind this fee was added before I gave them payment so apparently everyone is paying a credit card fee - even if paying cash. A nice little bonus for the restaurant charging an extra 3% to every customer - especially when the average credit card processing fee is 1.4 to 2.5 (slightly higher for American Express). It's one thing to overcharge for your food but don't sneak in extra fees. If you can't afford your business do something else. read more

I love Alma's FULL STOP! But the location on Carrollton needs some work. First and foremost the internet service is crappy and you can't connect to their WiFi because it's for business purposes only. I ordered the Alma's breakfast and added chicken. Because the chicken took longer to cook everything else on the plate was just sitting. As a result the chicken was piping hot but the rest of the items were cold. I hate when people send food back so I just ate it. Also I ordered a cortado and although I know it is essentially a shot of espresso I felt the cup size at the Carrollton location was smaller than the original location. I walked in and the room was chaotic obviously they were overwhelmed. I'm in the business so I empathize but the table set up is cramped and left little room to go to the bar. Found my way to the bar only to find seats so small an airplane seat seemed like a luxury. After sitting for a few minutes I deemed it to uncomfortable to continue.
