Chops or Steak & Eggs

Good food overall. The raspberry jam was amazing. The country fried steak was chewy and flavorless. I am ok with that because I prefer adding salt rather than salty but it was very chewy. Gravy and biscuits were good.

Chorizo scramble special with a side of the best Biscuits in town.

Update for 2026: I keep coming back - by myself, with friends - and I usually have a very pleasant experience. I love sitting at the bar and doing research / writing while I'm eating. They take really good care of their patrons. I've only had one not so great experience with my food in the years I've frequented this place. I like the country charm and the different seating options (bar, small booth, bigger booth, outside) depending on my mood and group size. What I have to highlight most is the staff. They have a very consistent base of staff who are very friendly, attentive, and it almost feels like I'm being hosted by a big family in their home. People check in frequently to see if I need anything and I hear them being so sweet to other guests as well, in particular the kids. There's a reason I keep coming back. Keep up the great work, team!

I was a little worried when I pulled up behind the restaurant for the parking lot that is theirs and saw it was small but there were 2 spots left. We entered the back entrance by the patio and walked up to the front to meet the hostess. She told me they were clearing a table for us and it would just be a few minutes. It really was just a few minutes. I was impressed how little the wait time was for a party of 4 on a holiday being it was Labor Day. 3 of us ordered the chile verde breakfast omelette with flour tortillas as our "bread". The omelette was good, the country potatoes were okay and the beans were good. The tortillas were hard so not enjoyable. My adult son ordered a ham and cheese omelette with biscuits as his side of bread. The biscuits were HUGE! The biscuits really were the stand out to me for his meal. I couldn't get over how big they were. He didn't end up eating them there so not sure what he thought of them. He took them to go. Service was outstanding. Our waitress was attentive and other staff that were refilling drinks were also great. I feel like the price was pretty decent. For 4 adults and only one ordering a coffee, our check came out to $84. I would definitely come back again.

Big John's

Been on a Biscuits & Gravy tear recently, and continued this long and arduous process in Ventura at Allison's Country Cafe. Went with the "Big John's" which featured Chicken Fried Steak, which was, honestly, not that good. However, it did come with a side of biscuits which I ended up pairing with butta' and jam instead of the gravy, and glad I did. Overall, it hit the spot, and of note, is the first country breakfast I haven't finished in one sitting (although I never get leftovers to go, because that is embarrassing)...

Travel day Breakfast/Brunch! Ordered the Big John's which is Country Fried Steak with 3 over medium eggs and Home-fries, gravy & biscuits! My son Ordered the Curt's Hash Corned beef Hash home fries 3 Eggs and Biscuit. My wife ordered the Chili & Beans omelet with home-fries and a biscuit. We all ordered a coffee. Carissa our server and all the staff did a great job! One of the Best Breakfast in Ventura Ca.

The food was delicious, we had a few hiccups with our server getting drinks confused then never bringing my friend her drink. The parking SUCKS. and tables were a bit dirty. the biscuits were a little cold, the potatoes had a lot of onion. And the omelettes were okay. Maybe we'll give It another try some time..

Visited this cool little place on Sunday 3/30/25. Up in the Ventura area visiting family and decided to have a late breakfast here. Service was outstanding! We never had to ask for anything (just the way I like it)! Foods a little pricey BUT they aren't stingy with their portions AND everything we ordered was DELICIOUS! The servings are generous so you can certainly share!! My husband had the build your own omelette and said it was delicious. My sister enjoyed her Chile verde omelette, and my mom ordered Jeff's Favorite. Most of the meals come with toast or biscuits! I highly recommend the biscuits. They are ginormous! So light fluffy and downright delicious! Side note I had one last biscuit and just warmed it this morning (2 days later) and it was still fresh! The homemade jelly it came with so yummy! I was going to order deluxe biscuits and gravy until our server suggested the hangover cure! It comes with bacon and sausage crumbles, crispy hash browns and eggs on top! These WERE THE BEST biscuits and gravy I have ever had!!!! I'm thinking of an excuse just to go back ASAP for more biscuits and gravy! I would give Allison's more than 5 stars if I could!!!

I had an amazing chile verde breakfast. Their biscuits and homemade jam are the best. Too much for just one meal.

Ask the Community - Allison's Country Cafe

Did they change owners, the energy and everything about the restaurant is different than prior? We stopped in and grabbed biscuits but it just didn't have the same home town feel.

Yes, a woman by the name of Sally Ramos acquired the business many years ago. It's been a downhill slide ever since.

Can you please let me know if you serve gluten-free pancakes, waffles, or French toast?

They have gluten free French toast

I had the Italian Sub and it was as good as any I've had elsewhere. There was no waiting to be served, although I did arrive well past the lunch business. I was able to upgrade the sandwich into a "meal" with a soft drink and bag of chips, for a total cost of $10.99! None of the chain sandwich shops could have matched that price for the sandwich alone. It's a simple place with great sandwiches and excellent prices. If that's good enough for you, by all means visit.

I had actually bookmarked Mastro's years ago and forgot all about it. This is a very no frills space located right on the corner - no inside seating but a couple round tables outside. Plenty of available street parking. There only appeared to be one woman working - she was a bit slow to greet me initially but had her back turned and I think may not have noticed I was there. She was happy to answer my questions and accommodating when making my sandwich. I opted for the italian sub but didn't want something very bread heavy so got the rye bread instead. While the rye bread was tasty, it was just Orowheat, which was disappointing to see all the breads were just sandwich bread you'd get in the store rather than home made or made by someone local. The sandwich itself had cheddar, provolone, bologna, salami, and capitola ham - all of which was very fresh. However, the amount of meat/cheese felt a bit minimal, especially when looking back at previous photos. For the very reasonable price though, l understand why maybe they cut down the amount of meat/cheese vs raise prices. Maybe add an option for double meat/cheese for an extra fee? It comes traditionally with mayo, mustard, italian dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion, peppercini but I just got lettuce, mayo, and italian dressing. Avocado was an optional add on for a reasonable $1 but because I had avocado at home I just added it at home. The sandwich itself was very tasty and enjoyable - I wish though instead of mayo and italian dressing they had used olive oil, vinegar, and oregano, which is more traditional and healthier. They also had potato salad and macaroni salad for only $2 - I got half and half and while they were both fine, nothing necessarily stood out about them. It was a nice little add on if you don't want chips. Speaking of chips, they had a very large selection of chips and bottle drinks. This wouldn't necessarily be my first stop if I am feeling very hungry, given that the sandwich felt pretty small (although I imagine on the sub roll it wouldve been a lot more filling). However, I will definitely be back if I am craving an inexpensive deli sandwich - it is hard to find lunch anywhere for under $10 and I appreciate that they keep the prices affordable. Seeing as they have been around for what appears to be 10+ years, I imagine they know their demographic and cater to that.

This is a hidden international gem of a restaurant, which may take you a little time to wait if you aren't ordering ahead, but it's worth it! There is a variety of food offerings and to-go beverages, sure to satisfy almost anyone's palate. I've dined here a few times and my favorite sandwich is the Rachel** - packed with sauerkraut (gut-friendly probiotics!) & well-seasoned turkey. So delicious. And it came with a tasty side salad. You can also choose fries as a side or tater tots, for an up charge - both satisfying options, IMO! Dining vibe is low-key and spacious for small groups and the restaurant is kept very clean, with festive touches. I'd recommend going 'old fashioned', skipping the order ahead/apps or delivery and mindfully enjoying a meal to close out 2025 - it's the perfect spot to do it and support small business. Pro-Tip: Don't skip dessert! I've tried the cream horn, but also eyeing both the German Chocolate and Tres Leches cake, which were recommended by some fellow diners on my last visit. **On a throwback note, to me "The Rachel" is a chic & trendy haircut from the 1990s, but here we are in the 2020s, and it's a delicious sandwich - haha! Both are classics to me :)

I went to Five Points Meat Market to purchase approximately 11-12 bone-in short ribs. The total came to about 8.5 pounds, costing over $140. I have purchased meat from Five Points Meat Market in the past and previously received satisfactory cuts, so I did not thoroughly inspect the short ribs at the time of purchase. When I prepared the ribs on Christmas Day, I discovered that the majority of the cuts were almost entirely fat. I trimmed away as much fat as possible, but even after trimming, the ribs remained excessively fatty. Out of the entire order, I was only able to salvage about six ribs with a reasonable amount of meat, and even those still contained significant fat. Three of the ribs were unusable and had to be discarded due to the lack of meat. Because it was Christmas Day and grocery stores were closing as I was preparing dinner, I had no choice but to cook the ribs anyway. Despite removing most of the visible fat, a couple of my family members experienced mild stomach discomfort due to how fatty the meat was. While I understand that short ribs naturally contain fat and this is a dish my family prepares often, I have never received such poor-quality short ribs before. There were leftovers, but no one wanted to eat them. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience, especially given the price. In hindsight, I should have purchased the short ribs from Sprouts, where the cuts appeared to be significantly meatier, less fatty, and 100% grass-fed at a lower cost.
