I'd been struggling with lower back issues for a few years. I'd had an MRI and done 6 months of physical therapy. Nothing seemed to be helping. Doctors just shrugged their shoulders. A coworker told me about rolfing and how it had helped his back. He's a very non-new-agey kind of guy and someone that was as skeptical as I would be about 'alternative' treatments. But I really didn't know where else to turn. I was ready to try something else. When you're desperate, you feel like an easy target. I figured I would try 1 session... maybe 3, TOPS. What could the harm be? In the grand scheme, it's a little bit of money for feeling better. Ok! I don't know why bodywork of this type is under "beauty and spas" and not "health and medical", but deep bodywork is what we're talking about here. Allison currently works out of Plum Blossom, and they're fine (like a mini boutique of stuff you have probably already seen at Whole Foods). But this review is for Allison, and her Rolfing skillz. Yes, Rolfing. There's a bunch of schools of bodywork, and Rolfing is another one of them. Wiki says the following about Rolfing: "Rolfing is a system of soft tissue manipulation, with the objective of realigning the body structurally and harmonizing its fundamental movement patterns in relation to gravity (see Structural Integration). Though the service mark Rolfing belongs to The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration, the term Rolfing is generally used to apply to a range of systems based on the teachings of Dr. Ida Pauline Rolf. Practitioners of Rolfing believe it to enhance vitality and well-being, and claim that after sessions, many clients stand up straighter, gain in height, and that soft-tissue bodily asymmetries tend to disappear. Rolfing is in some ways similar to deep tissue massage (see especially Myofascial Release), however, practitioners stress that Rolfing's attention to the balance of the body in gravity sets the practice apart." Let's concentrate on the deep tissue part. If you like deep tissue work, you will dig Allison. She has been doing this for years and knows her stuff. If you want a gentle mamby-pamby touchy-feelie this isn't for you. If something feels all knotty in you, she pretty much knows how to unknot it. Are you going to stand straighter or gain in height? I was looking for a good Rolfer, as a suggestion from my massage therapist, and found Allison on yelp. I'm so glad I did! I have had 9 out of 10 sessions with her and I can honestly say I've seen a huge difference. My main issue was chronic hip and low back pain on my left side. Massage and chiropractic work only helped for a few days at a time whereas Allison's work gives me relief for weeks at a time and is still improving all the time. After finding great benefit from my own Rolfing sessions with Allison I brought my 13 year old daughter to see her for some help with occasional discomfort from an old injury to her sacrum.
