Salmon

We honestly thought they were closed. Monday night at 6pm and we were the only table for our entire meal. I didn't even try the check in deal because our server couldn't even split the calamari amongst both of us. The bread was cold which I prefer warmed. The calamari was average at best considering it was chewy and cooked unevenly. Some bites were pretty fishy for calamari. The swordfish was decent but covered in oil. The veggies were a little under cooked as well. The server was friendly but it was just kind of awkward since we were literally the only guests there.

Allgauer's is located inside the Chicago/Northbrook Hilton which sits along the banks of the Des Plaines River. It's not a particularly attractive river or river view, but it nicer than a parking lot view. It was the chosen location for a family brunch the day after the wedding of my wife's cousin. THE MEAL Although the restaurant and building have a dated 70's sort of feel, the buffet is very impressive in both selection, cleanliness and presentation. There are four main areas: The first featured an ice sculpture centerpiece surrounded by crab legs, peel & eat shrimp and oysters (on ice) on one side and about 15 different cold salads on the other. Also in this section was a prime rib carving station, a seafood medley pot, a Charcuterie table, sliced meats in gravy, dried fruits as well as mashed potatoes and a steamed vegetable mix. The next area included lots of jams/jellies, breads (such as bagels, toast, croissants & danishes) and a custom omelette station where you place all of your ingredients other than eggs and cheese in a bowl and hand it to the omelette chef. I've not seen that before, but thought it was brilliant because it allows you to control your desired portions as well as ingredients. Across from the omelettes is a large array of goodies from deviled eggs, to bacon & sausage to asparagus to chips & guacamole. By far the most impressive of the items was the whole salmon presentation. Just on the other side of a partition was the final buffet area filled with desserts. Here you will find a number of bite sized tasty treats along with a chocolate fountain complete with marshmallows, fresh strawberries and rice krispies treats. THE SERVICE I'm not sure if it was standard or if it was included just for our brunch group, but we had bottomless mimosas served the entire meal. The servers are nicely dressed and make you feel like you are a guest on some fancy old cruise ship, like the Titanic! LOL FINAL THOUGHTS While the presentation was truly impressive and the food was fantastically fresh and of high quality, the flavor of most items were just okay. It's not a place I would crave to return for another meal, but it was a delightful gathering place for family in a well-lit & spacious setting. I can definitely see why it was the chosen venue for a family brunch. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay the bill! Based on the cost I overheard for our group, this buffet would probably classify as not worth the money in my book. 2019/91

Had a fun company lunch at this "riverfront" restaurant. It's attached to a hotel, might be hard to find if you are here just for the restaurant. We had the buffet company event, but it's usually $13 for the buffet lunch. The place is kind of dated, but nice and clean. You have a nice view of the trees and a canal, but the riverfront advertisement is very misleading. The salads are not the freshest, a couple yellow leafs and a few rotten ones. The mixed salads are slightly better, the oriental chicken one was my favorite out of the bunch. The calamari salad was like rubber, definitely not the best ingredients. There is stuffed chicken and beef slices. They are both ok, nothing special but not bad. The mushroom soup was full of cream and butter, can't taste anything else. The service was good. Had a present time but can't say I'd come here if it wasn't free.

Red Wine Braised Pot Roast

I stayed at the Hilton just to have a weekend get away and didn't want to go out to eat so I decided to go down the the restaurant, can I just say delicious! I got the red wine braised pot roast which was so good and filling, I also had shrimp bisque which was really good as well. I will have to for there for dinner one evening.

Very overpriced but delicious thanksgiving meal. It could have been more reasonably priced.

The sashimi seemed to get taken - and refilled - really fast. It seemed like most people were willing to wait for the crab legs to come out. We were not disappointed. My husband loved this place because he said all his needs had been met there. The reason I took one star off is because I'd like to encourage the people who prepare the dim sum to aim a little higher. The har gow and siu mai were quite small, and what I think was supposed to be xiao long bao (soup dumplings) were tiny and without soup.

A server named Anny (or something close to that) was incredibly rude, dismissive, and openly condescending from the start. We asked a simple question about what drinks were included, and instead of answering like a normal server, she responded with "Drinks are drinks." That kind of attitude is unacceptable in any customer-facing job. It was lazy, disrespectful, and unnecessarily insulting. Only after I directly called out her response did she finally explain the drink options, and even then she did it with obvious irritation, like we were bothering her by asking a basic question. It got even worse when I went to the front desk to complain. Rather than apologizing or trying to fix the situation, she immediately became defensive and claimed, "I told you, you just didn't hear me." That was simply false. She did not properly explain anything until after I challenged her rude behavior. Then, instead of letting the issue go, she came back to our table looking angry and resentful, and gave us a completely insincere explanation. The worst part was her final comment: "You can say whatever you want. You already said it anyway." Then she walked away impatiently. That response alone tells you everything you need to know about her professionalism. This was not a misunderstanding. This was not "bad communication." This was a server with a nasty attitude who clearly does not know how to treat paying customers with basic respect. I've had normal service here before from other staff, so this stood out even more. One employee like this is enough to ruin the entire experience and make customers not want to come back. Management should take this seriously. Staff like this do real damage to a business.

There's a small parking lot in the back but that was full so we parked on the street. We were immediately seated and drink orders were taken as well as soup (which is included). Drinks are added separately and not inclusive of the $34 per person. I had the borscht and that was tasty and comforting. My brother in law didn't waste any time and he immediately got his first plate going. My sister and I took our time to enjoy the soup. I then started with the appetizers and tried the different salads. It was cool to see they had aspic since that's not something you see often either. When I eventually made my way to the warm food, I was overwhelmed by all the choices. I tried to take one of everything but even then it was too much so I didn't get to try it all. The meats that I did try were super tender and juicy. They definitely know what they're doing with the meats! The dessert area had so many different options. There was cake, flan and cheesecakes. So many to choose from! I think I just love Polish food in general because of the comfort food aspect. The proteins are usually simmered in gravy and you get to pair it with potatoes cooked in all sort of ways! My sister was adventurous and just started putting random stuff on her plate that I've never seen before. She found the meat spread and that was surprisingly good too. If you're ever in the area, try to go before the dinner rush. It's a great space and is deserving of the title "Largest Polish buffet in Chicagoland".

Lunch and dinner prices appear to be the same (over $30) for adults but even though the waitress asked how old our kids were, she charged us less, so win on that! I had a bit of dumpling and some sausage and rice, but was getting over a headache, so this was not a gorging meal for me. Very nice waitress and we didn't feel rushed or crowded even though they were busy.

Killerrad restaurant at Ravinia Festival…read more They have a menu that changes daily and an enormous buffet. The last time I was there, some standout dishes included a corn risotto, a couscous salad, and for dessert, peanut butter and jelly shots. And loading up on the cheese and lavosh station is totally understandable... It's amazing. A few complaints: The night we were there, the quality of the fruit wasn't so great, the bread pudding couldn't be severed with the serving utensils provided, and they had a crab-yellow watermelon salad that was pretty bland and watery. But: my very picky younger brother had about six plates of mussels-- and if he leaves a restaurant happy, it's often miraculous. So many vegetarian options, and so convenient when picnicking gets too cumbersome. And the menu is available online, so you can be absolutely sure there will be something that appeals to you: http://www.ravinia.org/Mirabelle_menu.aspx (There will be.)
