Sam Tuttle was hired to do a build out on our metal building to be an Airbnb. In short Sam Tuttle is an con-artist. He mismanaged the funds for the job he was hired to do. He lied about how he spent the funds. He asked for more money when he knew he was going on vacation. Then he asked for the entire amount of the project when his agreement stated "three installments as the project moved forward." He refused to follow our vision. He did things his way and when we asked him for explanations he said he was going to need more money. In a meeting in our home he insulted our guest when they asked him a question. He got into a screaming match at our front door because he didn't want to answer legitimate questions about the concerns we were having. On this same day he walked off the job. Sam said he was a Christian and that he was honest. He was recommended by a close family friend which is why we hired him. There were huge discrepancies about how the money was spent. He told us different amounts on three different occasions which he why we wanted to talk to him. We knew based on the material at the job site and the number of days he worked that there was no way he could have spent all of the first installment. Because Sam walked off the job in anger we asked him for an amount we believed he should return to us. He agreed to this amount in an email and then has refused to pay us. He does not return our emails, he does not return our texts. This is the first time I have ever left a bad review for anyone. In this case, it is the right thing to do. Sam Tuttle is not ethical. He took advantage of me and my 82 year old mother. He lied to us. He mismanaged the funds and walked off the job in anger. I do not suggest you use him for any service. We regret trusting in him and allowing him into our home. Do not use his services. Stay away!!

The quaint white building on 6th street, showcasing yearly "Austin Best Builder" signs with owner and employees who wear black tee shirts that say "Humility & Curiosity & Diligence & Confidence" is simply not at all what we experienced. We recently settled a six-figure lawsuit against Melde Construction, (new owner) Bernie Calcote, its former COO Nic Bell, its former Project Manager Jesse Marsh and several subcontractors. Mr. Calcote and Mr. Bell were never deposed under oath after much legal maneuvering and boxes of evidence and hours of witness testimony are not easily accessed publicly. Therefore, we feel an obligation to warn other potential clients about key facts before possibly hiring Melde construction or any of the people involved. Melde: 1) did not keep the project notebook required by the contract that would facilitate us to see invoices for labor & materials 2) used incorrect building materials 3) did not follow architectural plans 4) charged us for work they never ultimately performed 5) made errors that could have caused catastrophic fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning 6) repeatedly lied by omission about water intrusions in the house while family lived elsewhere If this was simply a situation of a construction project that took too long and went over budget, or if Melde had taken responsibility, we would not be voicing our concerns publicly. Melde blamed the homeowners and refused to be accountable for its actions. Homeowners are still trying to solve Melde's errors, among the most egregious issues: -concealed water damage to original hardwood floors after failing to protect home during at least two storms (fall 2022) -installed incorrect furnace in attic that would have caused fire if activated -charged for an electrical service upgrade that did not occur -installed brick type we did not order, had workman chisel to look weathered instead of ordering weathered brick -placed new HVAC condensers without discussing placement -painted over damage to the ceiling in the garage (garage was not within project scope) -installed doors & handles on the addition that don't match existing doors & handles which are directly adjacent to addition -charged DOUBLE original quote for metal handrails then did not paint with direct to metal acrylic enamel -did not honor warranty for windows, left project with multiple hardware, latches and weather strips missing Before entering into contract with Melde Construction (Bernie Calcote bought business from Leon Melde in July 2016), feel free to contact us for more explanation and details. There are many credible construction companies in Central Texas. We highly recommend considering our feedback before choosing this one.

It was completely rotted out and was a safety hazard. Out of the four contractors I called, Melde was the only one who responded right away. Two of the other companies told me the balcony was beyond the scope of their abilities. As for Melde, I knew they did home renovations, so I wasn't sure if our balcony was a job they'd do. Nick was able to come out within a day or two to give us a quote, and he assured me that they could do high-end renovations, build a dog-house, and everything in between (including the balcony). They were able to start the job the following Monday. They finished on time and under the original estimate. I was very pleased with the work. I'll definitely do business with them again.

I have recommended Marks Builders to many of my family and friends, and they've all had great things to say too.  Read on if you want the whole story! I had a leak in a wall between two bathrooms, above the kitchen.  Just to set the scene, my wife was pregnant and we had a baby due 3 weeks after the start of the construction.  My kitchen had a dropped ceiling and was original to the 1970s house.  Dustin worked with State Farm (my insurance carrier) to bring the adjuster's repair estimate up to a par. He and his team worked with us to order cabinets early (we were getting custom cabinets so they had a long lead time), then they gutted the kitchen and bathroom, raising the ceiling to 8' (reworking the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical lines in the process).  They pulled up all of the tile in the downstairs while we were out of the house (and in the hospital having the baby).  We asked for a few days at home without construction when we came home, to which they agreed. They worked hard to make sure that the house was ready for cabinets when they would be delivered. The cabinets were delivered without issue and installed the same week, with the trim taking longer than any other single step because they wanted it to look just right - and it paid off! The finishing touches make all the difference! The granite crew came in and did their thing. Like all of Dustin's sub-contractors, they were on time, professional, and courteous. They did their work well, quickly, and cleanly. We opted for granite counters and granite backsplashes, with different edge finishes in different places, corners, etc. to work around. They did it all well. Our kitchen looks fantastic, even a year and a half later. Through the whole 2-month process, Dustin's crew was on-site 4-6 days/week, except when we asked for the break. We made a lot of changes midway through, and Dustin didn't nickel and dime on the little things (moving an outlet, changing from a 2 gang to a 4 gang plug, etc). He was happy to work with my attention to detail (which can frustrate most people I know) and he did it with a smile - his attention to detail was similar. His crew was always fun to have around, and I never once worried about them being in the home, whether I was there or not. They worked hard to make sure we felt safe with them in the house at the start of Covid. All said, I strongly recommend Marks Builders. They're honest, smart, hard-working, and fun people who care about the work they produce and their customers' experience.

I've had to threaten to go to court at this point because they are refusing to refund $6,000 for a job that was never performed and because of their complete lack of communication and very POOR customer service. After two weeks of waiting on a refund, I was told that I'm emotional, angry, upset, etc. Both Robert and his wife Stephanie have said these things to me verbally over the phone. Then I was told I am the problem. Would you not be upset if someone was holding $6K of your money and refusing to give it back and just giving excuses? Basically, I call and get name called and when I respond in like, I'm the "emotional" one. They said deposits are not refundable in general... Nowhere in the contract or the few emails I have was I ever told that I this money was non-refundable. I would not have signed the contract had I known this. In my experience, you pay a contractor at completion or the money is refundable. Also, I was never told or given a timeline for my job so it is the reason I reached out frequently (with no response from them) and ultimately decided I did not want to work with this company anymore. Here's my detailed experience: I requested an estimate 3 months ago. No one reached out to after this appointment. I had to reach out to them ~3-4 weeks later for the estimate. After requesting two things removed, I paid it. Then I reached out several times via calling and emailing to see when my job would be scheduled for. My emails were completely ignored. When I called I was always told by Stephanie that Robert would give me a call back and he never did. It went like this for months. Finally, I left a message stating that I needed to know when I was on the schedule or that I wanted my money back so I could hire someone else. Stephanie called back and said potentially 5/17 and that Robert someone else would call to confirm. On 5/10 I still had no confirmation that they would be there the following week and I had an urgent family situation come up. I decided it wasn't worth the headache anymore to keep trying to deal with this so I called and requested my money back. That's when their true colors really started to show. Stephanie and Robert told me how they are family people and their intentions are to do best by their customers and they wanted to make this right. Ha. Ha. Ha. Jokes on me because I really believed them at first. I again waited a week, didn't hear back. Called and talked to Robert finally who said he has to "chase" down my money and would update me by the end of the week. ONCE AGAIN, he did not call my by the end of the week, so I called him late afternoon on Saturday, left a voicemail and texted. He said I could call anytime. So I call back this morning, he was upset that I had called and texted late Saturday, yet he's the one who said I could call anytime....... He told me "you are angry" and it's making you "forget things". I asked for proof in writing where it states the timeline for my job and that the deposit was non-refundable. He told me, "I never put timelines in writing because I don't want to be held to it." THERE IT IS!!!! So Robert and Stephanie don't want to be held accountable to do the work in a timely manner, but they want to hold me accountable for the money. I finally had to say if I do not have my money back by the end of the week, I'm filing a lawsuit in small claims court. I do not want to do this at all. It's just another headache to go through. But I will not stand by and let someone steal $6,000 from me.

In my initial outreach, I explicitly stated that this was a virtual consultation and outlined the scope in detail. Ryan responded that he could handle the work and was interested. We confirmed logistics multiple times, including the evening before and again the morning of the appointment. My client rearranged her schedule, and I rearranged mine to coordinate a live virtual walkthrough at the property. Ryan did not arrive at the agreed-upon time. After the scheduled time passed, I called -- no answer. I sent a message asking him to confirm arrival -- no response. Two and a half hours later, he sent a message stating he had been "warned to stay away from these types of jobs" and apologized. There was no prior indication of hesitation, concern, or limitation in scope. If he was unwilling or uncomfortable with the nature of the job, that should have been communicated before confirming and causing both myself and my client to restructure our day. Reliability and communication are non-negotiable in client-facing industries. Unfortunately, this experience demonstrated neither. I cannot recommend based on this interaction. ***Update*** *Ryan attempted to dodge accountability by replying on Thumbtack that he was not given a clear scope. My microwave oven range hood is not satisfactory and the smoke alarm goes off all the time because I cooked a lot and generated a lot of smoke. I then decided to hire them for the job. They came in at 7:30 A.M. in the morning to beat the summer heat. It requires piping and extension exhaust vent directly to outside top siding. I got frustrated and started a project on Yelp, TX 5J handyman responded very fast to my inquiry and came on the same day to give me estimate. Then gave me a very honest diagnosis for a short term fix and long term fix. I went with the short term for now and they came back the second day to fix it now the drain doesn't leak anymore. Daniel is very fast response to my inquiry over the text; and they did a good job fixing it at a decent price. Highly recommend for others to use them.
