While the person who answered the phone at All-Star was a bit of a schmuck, Chris, the locksmith who came to my place within four hours (on a holiday weekend, no less), was great, and his assistant, Mike, was polite and quick. I appreciated the time Chris took to explain how the lock system I was getting worked, and he was up-front about what it would cost me - no hidden fees or "gotcha" tactics. WARNING WARNING WARNING: THE WORST EXPERIENCE YOU WILL EVER HAVE!!!!!!!!! I called All Star locks based on a recommendation from Jay (Lockbusters) because they didn't service the Brooklyn area. What started out as quick fast process, turned into the worst experience ever!! After making the appointment to install a multi security lock on my new apartment door, Joey (the man who I believe manages the business) sent out a locksmith (and I use that term very loosely) name Chris to install the lock. After putting the lock on the door Chris "the locksmith" locked us both in the apartment with no way of getting out. Not sure what he did to the door but it no longer opened from the inside. He had to climb out the fire escape, go through the roof and open the door from the outside. I couldn't understand why a professional locksmith had to go through the roof to fix the problem if he was on the inside of the apartment WITH HIS TOOLS. After he opened the door, he attempted to fix the problem only for us to get locked in a 2nd time. I asked him what was the problem and Chris became very defensive saying the problem wasn't his fault (although my door was working fine before he got there). When I asked if he can just put the lock back on that was originally there he demanded I pay him $150 for his labor which is absurd since he was the person who created the problem. When I refused Chris took my entire door apart and stole some of the pieces to my lock to inconvenience me since he didn't get paid for ruining my door. I was stranded in my apartment for 3hrs until another locksmith came to rescue me. I called the company to speak with someone in charge, Chris had already called and told his side of the story so Joey didn't care to help or hear my side of the story. After we spoke I told him I was stuck in my house, he promised to call me back never did and when I called the next day several times he refused to take my calls. I will be taking legal action against them; Chris stole the parts to a $400 lock. PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND USE ANOTHER LOCKSMITH!!!!!! Terrrrrrrrrrible customer service - I went to get a copy of my key, and after they "fixed" the original one, it didn't work. I just wanted an explanation - and the lady at the front desk starts getting angry with me and saying that it wasn't her fault. She said I'm mistaken if I say that the key doesn't work. I went back to my house to try the keys out again, and it still didn't work. I had to go BACK to the store, and the lady refuses to help me and change her attitude - so the manager comes out. He was nicer about it, but he still wasn't as friendly as I'd like. I will most likely never go back again. The key eventually worked - I mainly had a problem with the lady's attitude. She started getting feisty as soon as I asked about my key. For me, the customer service is just as important, if not more. If you're going to have a bad attitude working with me, then I don't want to return, no matter how good your services are. read more

These guys did a great job changing the locks for an apartment. They were prompt (arrived a few minutes late but had called to say so.) They had good advice about what to do and installed the new locks quickly. They keyed as many as they could the same. They even put up with a cranky neighbor with style. You can go to their storefront to get additional keys afterward too. I'm keeping their business card. The only minor negative is that the locks were a little expensive, but I don't know anything about the pricing here. I got the pick-proof locks & they are higher. I called All Star today to fix an iffy bathroom doorknob, a loose deadbolt and a front doorknob that had completely fallen out of the door (real safe, I know!). Joey was prompt, fast, kind enough to explain what he was doing and what needed to be replaced, and just a generally super nice guy. I went to the store to purchase an item I needed to finish a lock installation I was doing myself. The important thing is, in the end I got what I needed and it worked like a charm. However, it wasn't easy to get the cylinder I needed. The women behind the counter fabricated issues I might have with the new piece and acted hesitant to sell me the cylinder in an effort to get me to hire one of the locksmiths. I know they can cost a fortune. I finally had to demand that they just sell it to me and stop discussing fake problems. I'd advise anyone who shops there to know exactly what you need, not ask any questions or start talking to the salespeople. They will just try to upsell you by inventing issues. read more

Joey and his wife are great. Joey (owner) came to my new home to replace all of my locks in the fall. He was quick, efficient and his prices were fair. I have also gone to the storefront to make copies and they have a good little hardware selection. The key event happened several weeks later, when my 2 yr old son was locked in his bedroom mistakenly by an inside lock that was erroneously set in lock mode(fortunately he slept through it). I called Joey on a Saturday night. He sent me a locksmith right away. He even called to check in and make sure he arrived. I do not like writing such negative reviews, but my experience with this locksmith necessitates it. These swindlers set me back quite a bit. I've also confirmed from my super that they pulled the wool over my eyes and took advantage of my being locked out of my apartment alone. I would avoid them all costs. Full details below. I returned to my apartment at 11:45 PM to discover I was locked out--the person with my spare keys was also out of town. I called Allstar because it was the nearest locksmith and the reviews were pretty good. The person on the phone told me it would be $40 plus whatever the technician charged. I agreed. 30 minutes later the so-called "technician" showed up (some guy with a 213 area code--avoid this guy!) He told me he could try to pick the lock, and if that didn't work he'd replace it. He said the fee was $180 either way. I tried to protest but he wouldn't budge. Given how late it was, and that I needed to get into my apartment, I caved. He spent about two minutes picking the lock after which he said it was "too secure" to be picked and I had to have it drilled off. What could I do? After he drilled it off he tried to upsell me with another lock, this time I said no. He proceeded to continue to try and upsell me saying that my door wouldn't be secure for the night and if anything happens in the middle of the night I could call him. I paid as fast as I could to get him out of there. The next day my super confirmed that I had been totally ripped off--the lock was not "too secure." I had to get the lock replaced. I found out there was a spare key seconds before the serviceman was to do $400 worth of lock drilling and replacing (unclear if this included the service and preliminary lock picking fees). Still had to pay $100 ($125 if it wasn't in cash) for service ($45), and preliminary lock picking ($80). The women who run the store are very nice. They have a good supply of general hardware considering that the store is so small. Their prices though are 50% higher than other areas in the neighborhood. I'm impressed. The door in my building wasn't working for anyone and I decided to call All Star. Although it was a Friday evening, they had someone come over pretty quickly. He had me text a picture of the lock in advance and acknowledged that this door may be tough fix. Upon arriving, this description quickly became the reality, but the locksmith attempted to work on the door for the next hour. By the end, he acknowledged that my high security electric door would need the help of a specialist in that area. He even suggested that I contact the manufacturing company. Though I expected to pay him something for his visit although the door was not fixed, he declined, provided advice on having the door fixed and told me to have a good evening. I am very sad to read those negative reviews because I have lived near this store for close to 12 years now. I have shopped in the hardware store numerous times and never had a problem. I understand that the owners wife may have a English/Chinese barrier language problems, but most times she is knowledgeable and able to help with most problems. My son was locked out of the apartment while I was at work and I called and asked Joe to stop over and try to do as little damage as possible to open the door for him. He was there in a jiffy and opened the 2 locks and put them back together for me. He charged me a reasonable price and offered to make several copies at no extra cost so that I had spare keys in case this ever happened again. Now that is customer servive and a friendly neighborhood store. I also buy my terrace garden supplies in the hardware store. This is a review on their "residential lockouts" service only since I never visited the store. A few days ago I locked myself out, and found their number using yelp. An older dude with a beat up truck came to my apartment pretty quickly, opened and fixed the lock. That's where the 2 stars go. What left bad taste in my mouth was that person's communication and attitude. He never mentioned any quote in advance. Then basically asked me to pay. When I asked for his explanation on the quite big charge, he raised his voice and basically threatened to call police on me.
