M&D is the only locksmith business that I trust -- and I've used many different businesses around Brooklyn, to help with unlocking rooms I've been locked out of, installing new locks and securing front doors. When I called, I was in a state of panic. The lovely woman who answered the phone assured me she'd help resolve my situation. She was so kind and helpful from the very start. Joey the locksmith, with M&D, arrived in fewer than 30 minutes! And he introduced himself, asked about the lock, and got to work right away. He was able to fix my door really fast, and charged me a fair price which I was more than happy to pay for his time and efficient work. I told Joey I'd write him a 5-star review if he could make a copy of my Mul-T-Lock key that works. I'm a man of my word. Joey is M&D's master key technician, or at least that's what Leah, the girl who answered the phone, told me. When I came into the shop, he was mildly braggadocious ('I am the only one who can make this key') but mostly charming. He refused a tip and instead insisted I write him a good review. He did me a massive favor by making this key, one of the few shops in the area who even considered it. Leah was polite and very friendly. They only charged me $20 and it was fast. A while back, the door to our building malfunctioned and one of our neighbors, an elderly woman, couldn't get out. In a panic, she called M&D. They sold her on a very pricey system that was way more than we needed, and before anyone knew anything about it, the unit was installed. Not only was it expensive, but keys are $20 apiece! Between the new lock and the price of making enough keys for everyone in the building (an eight-unit coop), our bill was $1,000. When I called the company to complain about overselling our neighbor during an emergency, the man insisted that it was a top-notch lock and that our neighbor fully understood what she was agreeing to (which she did but she also just wanted the door to work). Sure, it works fine, but it doesn't sound like going with a less-expensive option was ever discussed. Not only are keys $20 apiece, but only THEY can make them. My days of being able to go around the corner to my local locksmith and get new keys ground for a few dollars are over. But, I needed some new keys so yesterday I schlepped to M&D's store on Empire, only to find that it was locked because the guy was out on a call. I called the company and a woman said that they offer pick up and dropoff service for new keys -- for $25 each way. Sure, I want to pay $50 on top of the already-ridiculous $20. Expensive AND inconvenient. Oh, and while I was standing in front of the store, another man showed up and, exasperated, said that they had been closed the last time he'd stopped by too. No hours are posted on their doors. They do fine work, but be careful about upselling and how pricey/easy it is or isn't going to be to get new locks made down the road. read more

All I can say Joey is you are truly my hero. What a relief it is to actually call a business for them to provide a service and for that service to be exactly what I asked for. I cannot even begin to tell you how frustrated I was that I was not able to get into my mailbox. I could not find the keys to save my life and I could only imagine my mailbox filling with magazines, bills - ahem, I mean important documents and me not being able to access them. At 7 PM tonight, I finally decided to give up and give in and call a locksmith to replace my mailbox lock. As usual, Yelp did not fail me. I had to make one phone call and the woman on the other end quoted me a reasonable price and gave me a time that the technician would appear at my doorstep. Lo and behold, Joey materialized 10 minutes after he called and said he would be there in 10 minutes. Within seconds he had the mailbox open and within another few minutes he had a new lock in place and I had a key in hand. Usually, paying would be an issue as companies start with "We can only accept cash or we only take cashiers checks or we need you to put up your firstborn child as collateral. " In this company's case, they were more than happy to take personal check and I was even allowed to put the tip on the check. This seriously has to be the best day of my life. He even offered me a receipt. A legitimate real receipt. If ever anyone needs a locksmith in the area or anywhere in New York City really, I can't recommend these guys highly enough. read more

M&D Locks is quick, reliable and courteous. My husband called on a Sunday morning to see if anyone was available to switch out a front door lock for us. Joey was at our apartment in 2 hours which is pretty incredible given how hard it is to schedule anything these days in NYC. He switched out our wonky doorknob with a brand new one. The work was done in less than 15 minutes with minimal banging and noise (we live in a coop building, so this was very important to us). Joey even took the old doorknob and disposed of it for us. The price was very fair given our research, however I will say that the price they quote you on the phone "does not include tax", which they will waive if you write a review of some sort. I was nervous as a have a very nice 1890 solid wood door that needed a deadbolt installed. Precision was key. He was an artist! Everything looks and works perfectly! Happily, none of the issues came to fruition but I loved how aware he was of my attention to detail, respected and matched that attention to his own. Excellent service! I had a different locksmith break my lock trying to get me back into my apartment but then try to charge me $500 to fix it. I called M&D at 10am and they scheduled me for a 1pm appointment the same day. Traffic all over the city was absolutely terrible that day, so the technician didn't get to me until 4pm, but the company was extremely nice about it and called me hourly to update me with the time, making sure I was able to wait. They got the job done in 5 minutes once here and the price was extremely reasonable for both the lock and the service call! 10 out of 10 would use again! Only a four star because of the wait, but I know that's not totally their fault. Excellent service and quick help; I highly recommend! read more

Terrible experience unfortunately - they're quick and convenient at first but their work doesn't really last. Started using them two years ago for everything from full lock changes to changing cylinders but it's become clear that they do not really stand behind their work without finding some way or another for you to continue to pay when things go wrong. The locking mechanism from a very expensive lock they sold me and installed just randomly broke off one day and no one explained to me why and I was out of $70 for "servicing" to fix it because it had been 22 months since installation. The same indoor lock I was told would last for years to come. Even their one year warranty on service comes with an if-you-don't-tamper-with-it disclaimer that they ultimately determine. Beware of having them change cylinders, etc. that are not full locks that THEY provide. They will make recommendatioms to you that they know will not last. Then they take no responsibility when something goes wrong and will simply find something random to blame it on and you'll ultimately find yourself out of more money to fix it. Every time. One of their technicians (who thankfully is no longer with the company) did such shoddy work that we were locked in from the inside! Once the main tech came later to fix it, he blamed "someone else" for doing poor work until I informed him that it was actually their tech who did the job (as also proven by their own records). He'd installed mismatched lock pieces without saying anything to anyone and the lock ultimately malfunctioned. But I was the one who found myself out of another $200+ at the end of the day when M&D failed to take responsibility for the job they themselves described as "unprofessional"... Was really looking forward to having them as my go-to lock guys for years to come but disappointingly won't be able to do so going forward. They're ok for quick fixes but definitely not built to last! read more

Called M&D locks because I was having a problem with a 100 year old lock on my townhouse in Brooklyn. The lock would no longer lock. After calling a few other places being told the doors would have to be replaced (100 year old iron doors) because the lock is not repairable or replaceable (no lock exists that would fit in the original iron door).
