Terrible and dishonest. They came and replaced our front door lock last week and not even a week later the their new lock broke. People were actually trapped inside the house because the lock would not release from inside! They came and opened the lock but then blamed us and said we broke the lock and wouldn't fix it unless we paid them at least ANOTHER $140. Total scam! read more

We recently contracted M&D to do a multi entrance installation at the Maple Street School in Brooklyn. Because the doors would be opened hundreds of times a week, the hardware had to be top rate that they were. These push bars are so robust that I think they'll last for 20+ years. After the installation we had what we thought was a problem, but ended up being a miscommunication. They had someone on-site with 30 minutes! If you need a locksmith these are the guys you want, they have been around for a long time, their integrity is impeccable, and they take customer service seriously. read more

Their office has contacted me and has asked me to change my review, which I will not because I believe my experience is a valid one, but I will update it. A lady called about an hour after I posted this review to get my side of the story. They told me the pricing was all a misunderstanding and I should have been more proactive about making sure I understood how much the price was. They also assured me my credit card info is safe. They offered partial refund in hopes I would change my review. I told them I don't want a refund but thanked them for caring enough to call. Half an hour later the owner Joseph called and wanted to rectify the situation by giving me a full refund in hopes I would change my review. Again, I turned down the refund and he was upset and went on for about 20 minutes how hard he has worked to build up his business and how much he cares about his customers and he said he'd do anything to make me happy. I told him I wasn't happy with how they weren't transparent or clear about their prices and that their method of collecting payment was shady. He got defensive and told me it was a misunderstanding and that I don't know how lucky I was that they gave me such a great price and that they are trustworthy people. He said no other locksmith company would even care enough to try and make things right. He went on to say how every other locksmith out there would have ripped me off and that there are stories of how locksmiths have broken into people's homes. He even said he'd fire the locksmith that worked on my apt. At this point I'm actually concerned for my own safety and security of my home because they have all my information and it never crossed my mind that a locksmith would ever break into my home. He made it a point to say I don't know anything about his industry so if I take his word for it, I should be afraid. In the end I told him I didn't want the refund and thanked him for calling. About 4 hours later, he texts me asking me to please change my review. I didn't respond. My takeaway from this is that the guy really cares for his business and his customer's satisfaction. And it's nice he went as far as to follow up on my complaint here and offer a full refund. I made the choice to not take it. He was pretty aggressive in trying to persuade me to change my review, which made me uncomfortable though I don't think he meant any harm. I understand small businesses need great reviews, which this place has plenty. But Yelp is first and foremost a place for consumers to know about experiences like this and it's important people's experiences are validated here without being influenced by business owners. So my advice to anyone using ANY locksmith, is to make sure you guys agree on the price when the locksmith shows up regardless of what was agreed on the phone, make sure you know how they take their payments, and best of luck. read more

Our upstairs neighbor hired M&D to rekey their unit, and while they were here we decided to rekey the front door and our unit as well. Joey came out and quickly assessed the locks throughout the unit and told us what we needed. We had the following installed: * Two single-barrel and one double-barrel high security locks on our back doors, matched keys * One new deadbolt, newly installed in a steel door, and one new apartment door lock on our front door, high security, restricted (can't be duplicated without key card), matched keys For all this Joey quoted a package price of just under $2000 including installation. This seems like a fair bit, but all five locks are high security with matched keys, and the important doors are basically un-pickable and cannot be copied. I consider it a good deal for what we got. Joey also threw in four spare keys for free with no questions asked (normally $10 each). Turnaround time was very good -- everything was special ordered and was ready to install within a week and a half. The office staff and Joey were both very responsive. Joey worked quickly and efficiently to finish the job, finishing in about half an hour. Joey also replaced the building front door with a high security restricted lock. The builders of the building had bungled the job and broken the existing lock so Joey found a replacement part within a day and came back the next day to finish the job. If you need a top quality install and prompt service I definitely recommend M&D. read more

This is my first Yelp review, but I have edited this twice. I was offered a complete refund to DELETE my review. I did not accept it because I want to help my fellow Yelpers, but said that I would pay the $100 originally quoted and would EDIT my review. I did edit my review to 3 stars and noted that I appreciated the attempt to make the price fair, but as of today, I have not received the refund. Taking this into account and the fact that Joseph suggested below that my 3 star review did not accurately reflect my experience, I am changing my review back to 1 star. Also in response to Joseph's comment, I did some research on the "Euro Profile" lock he claims is so difficult to open or repair: "The Euro profile is convenient to install and replace" - http://www.lockwiki.com/index.php/Euro_Profile. While this doesn't mention ease of OPENING the lock when the key is stuck, the fact that he was able to open it so quickly undercuts the claim that he provided any unusually complex service. Original review: I wasn't able to get my key to open my sublet apartment today, and so I called M&D based on its excellent Yelp reviews. I was told it would be $25 to come out and a minimum of $75 for repairs. That sounds reasonable. The guy came and told me that with the kind of lock the apartment had, it would be expensive to replace. He said "$250 if we have to break the lock." Then, he squirted wd-40 and was able to open the door. He fiddled with the lock for about 3 minutes, squirted wd-40 on the inside, and got a screwdriver out (though I did not observe him using it). Then, he asked how I would pay. I told him debit card, and he starts writing. $25 for service call, then $95 for "lockouts service." I asked, "Why so much?" and he immediately becomes incredibly rude. "I told you it would be $250. Jeez you try to do something nice for someone and then they get mad." I said, "I will pay it, I just want to know what I am paying for." He said that it would have been $250 and I got lucky. I said, "but all you did was spray wd-40" and he said, "I repaired it." FINE. Then, he adds another $65 for "lock repair." When I question that, he starts talking about how it is the kind of lock the door had, and he takes a picture and sends it to someone at the office. He calls and tells her what kind of lock it is, and she doesn't have any clue. When he tells her the price, she says, "oh that's an excellent price." And he says, "well this lady thinks it was too much." And I can see this is getting nowhere, so I say, "enough, please just go. I paid you." I consider myself a pretty nice person normally. I always roll my eyes at the customer who haggles over a bill. I honestly just was expressing surprise at the charge, and I got immediate attitude. All in all, $201 (25+95+65+tax) for someone to spray some wd-40 in the keyhole and to get treated rudely. He spent more time lecturing me about the price than "repairing" my lock. read more

I reached out to M&D after having some bad experiences with a couple of different locksmiths trying to replace a rare mortise lock set in an old building here in Brooklyn. Not only was I able to text pictures of our broken lock to them, they continued to text me with updates about finding the right parts and what the possible issues were all the way through the process. This was a tough piece to find and they said it may take up to 3 weeks, but after only a few days they were able to find the right parts and install them. Not only that, the locksmith was able to bring 15 copies of the keys to give to everyone in the building. M&D are fast, courteous, communicative and transparent. I needed a locksmith to change a lock on my apartment door. I had no idea who to call so I googled the words 'locksmith brooklyn' and M&D Locksmiths came up first. They had four and half stars so I decided to take the chance. The customer service was excellent and very thorough over the phone. I was told a locksmith would be at my house in just over an hour. When I needed a new front door lock M & D Lock and Keys was able to special order and install a custom high security lock to fit in an unusually shaped lock slot, and re-key my existing basement lock to match the new lock (less keys!). I'm very thankful for their ability to take on jobs that are more complex than your run-of-the-mill lock installation and will use them again. read more

Great service. We got a key copied for our 2003 Honda CR-V. The key has a transponder chip so it needs to be programmed, but they did it in under 10 minutes along with multiple house keys. The price for copying the car key was competitive at $85, and was consistent with what we were quoted on Yelp. read more

Great guys! Based on the reviews, it was easy to choose M&D. I got a quote from them through Yelp which was pretty much in line with other quotes I received. I scheduled them to come in on MLK Day. I was told someone would show up between 3pm and 4pm and I got a call at 3:45pm saying that they were on their way. Came right up and did the work replacing my standard NYC top lock. It was pricey, but really there is no price too high for safety. The reason I had to call them in the first place was because I tried to save money by installing a cheap lock from the local hardware store that broke within a matter of months. Best part about the whole experience was Joey giving me a recipe for hummus after we started talking a bit! Highly recommend! read more

Called on a Saturday night and Joey was here the next day right on scheduled time, not only that, he gave me "heads up" call about 15 minutes before he arrived. He explained the different locks I could have and the prices. He replaced cylinder in bottom lock, and drilled through my metal front door to install a top bolt security lock. Joey did all this in no time at all, cleaned up, was courteous,and professional. He also did a temporary fix on my door so it would close properly until maintenance came...I just thought it was hard to close, but it is falling off the top hinge. I had a stressful day and debated going out drinking after work but made the responsible decision and came home. I'm glad I did because I was locked out of my house. I did a Yelp search and ended up on the phone with M & D. They sent Owen out and he was here within 25 minutes. Unfortunately it was more than picking a lock and involved drilling so the price was on the higher end - but locksmiths in NYC are generally expensive. Owen was professional and I was in my apartment within 5 minutes and he made the lock like new in 5 more. I hope not to be locked out of my apartment again because my bank account can't handle it - but if I am Owen at M & D will be the first person I ring up! About 2 months ago (late in writing my review) I was unable to lock my apartment door from the outside. So I was left unable to leave my apartment. I called and they sent someone over within 2 hours. Someone came by and looked at the locks I had and changed both locks. It took less than an hour and he had everything he needed right there in his truck so there was no needing to come back. He was quick and even let me test all the door from the inside and out a few times to make sure I was happy. I was very happy! read more
