How I label this place: a little 'cheap date' spot with amazing sammiches with a good cause behind it! If you don't know about All Square's mission, check out the video on their website. But on to the goods: on our first visit the wife had the Hawaiian and I had the jerk chicken. Both were really flavorful sandwiches at solid price points. The bread was good (mine could've been a tad crispier, but I also like nearly burnt bacon, so take this with a grain of salt), and the flavor combos on both sammies were balanced really well without any being overwhelming. The special jam with the jerk was very interesting. Overall it was a solid maiden voyage for us a All Square. Staff was super friendly, they have a couple beers on tap and serve wine, too, and the prices were also spot on! The outdoor seating will be great when it's warm. So I have to say that I hate having to give this place one star because the establishment was created for a good cause. This was the reason we went there. I fully believe in supporting local businesses, especially those that positively impact the Community of Color. Well, we arrived around 12:30 and waited only a few minutes to order our food. I got lemonade, fries, and a jalapeno popper grilled cheese. My friend ordered the basil pesto sandwich and a salad. This was the highlight of our experience here. We sat at our table and waited for our food. We'd also asked for water, which finally came after at least six requests for this. I'd also had to ask more than once for my lemonade. My friend's sandwich came out without the salad. So, we asked for a fork. By the way, her number was AFTER mine, so we were both surprised that she got her sandwich before I. More than 30 minutes later, I still had not received my food, and my friend still didn't have a fork. I finally got up to ask what was going on, which was happening with many patrons. One man got very angry because he'd been waiting for some time and his children were hungry. He ended up getting a refund. A girl brought my sandwich to the table while I was in line and I told her that my friend still didn't have a fork. We finally got some water, at this point. My friend's sandwich was ice cold, of course, because she wanted to wait for my food to come before she started eating. We were not impressed by our meal. Needless to say, we were beyond disappointed. I've been to various restaurant opening weekends before and have never experienced anything like this, ever. They had one person running the food to the tables, and this poor man was obviously overwhelmed because patrons kept stopping him to ask for things that someone else should have brought out to us. I will have to think long and hard about returning here. I hope, in the meantime, that they get their act together. It has been years since I was angry in a restaurant. YEARS. For those commenting that I ought to have given greater latitude for the clusterf*ck that I experienced, re-read that I've been to other restaurant openings without these horrible results. While it's alright for you be glad for your friends' and families' businesses, it's unethical for you attempt to skew reality and to invalidate the experiences of others. Should they be fortunate enough for me to return, we'll see if they deserve a review with higher marks. One of the great things about Yelp is that reviews are snapshots in time, where people capture their experiences at the moment. Each star is earned, and businesses have the opportunity to bask and also to improve upon the services that they provide. I take writing reviews seriously, and take no pleasure in giving low marks. What a nice place to get some comfort food on a cold day! Prices are very reasonable, even with add-ons. My wife had the 4 Cheese with fries added (worth $2 extra). It was a very good classic grilled cheese. I had the Jerk Chicken grilled cheese which had great flavors (guava jam!) and a nice spicy kick. I added a cup of Wild Rice Soup that was good to offset the spiciness of the jerk. Also worth the extra $2. Service was good, and as noted by others, the mission is a good one. We stayed at an AirBNB in the area, and our host recommended this place to us. I'm really glad we tried it out. The Jerk was phenomenal. If you're hesitant because you don't LOVE grilled cheese, be aware that this is just a very good jerk chicken sandwich that has cheese on it. I personally don't LOVE grilled cheese, but when I dipped the Four Cheese in their tomato basil soup, I was sold. That's a cosmic pairing that no one can resist, and All Square does a fine version. The kitchen is totally open, and the preparation was quick. Service was friendly and great! They had a booster seat, kids books, and a child's grilled cheese for my friend's daughter. All Square is perfect for a light lunch with friends. Every sandwich on the menu is unique and delicious. There's not one I don't like. I ordered the Basil Pesto and loved it. Don't be afraid of the Apple Brie Pecan. It's not too sweet and the apples give it great flavor. It's all outdoor seating right now. You go in to order and they bring the food out. Went here for dinner one evening and expected "the unexpected". The music inside was SO LOUD as to be distracting, even disturbing. Ordering at the counter went fine, and then we sat ourselves and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited for food to finally be delivered. Perfect little lunch spot that you can feel great about getting! I tried the jalapeño popper and jerk chicken sandwiches - both were DIVINE. I loved the spice of the jerk chicken that was immediately met with the sweet tang of the guava jam. I know, it sounds weird, but trust me...it is GOOD. I rarely give one-star reviews, but this particular visit at this restaurant did not go as well as I had hoped. My friend suggested we meet here for Sunday brunch, as it was new, and it was for a great cause (All Square is a nonprofit fast-casual gourmet grilled cheese restaurant and institute that aims to reduce recidivism by supporting, rather than excluding, individuals with criminal records; encumbered pasts), so I was excited to try it out. When I went to the website, I was caught a bit off guard that the main fare of the restaurant was grilled cheese sandwiches. I was not expecting that, but again, I still wanted to try it and see how I liked it. We arrived at the restaurant around 12:30 p.m. or so. It is located within a storefront on the corner of 40th and Minnehaha. Inside, the restaurant is rather smallish and tight. We got up to the counter and were able to place our order fairly quickly, which we perceived to be a positive sign. My friend ordered a jalapeno popper grilled cheese sandwich, fries, and a glass of lemonade; I ordered the basil pesto sandwich and a salad, and we each asked for a glass of water. Due to the size of the place inside, I was a bit concerned if we would be able to sit inside and navigate around the few tables, but thankfully, we were able to find an empty table and make our way there. We were given numbers and went to the table and waited...and waited...and WAITED. It was about an HOUR before we got our food. Come to find out, there was only ONE server bringing out food, which also made other peoples' orders late. My sandwich was delivered to me before my friend's, though my number was after hers, which we thought was somewhat peculiar. I didn't want to start eating before my friend got her food, so my sandwich got cold while we waited for someone to bring her food. We still had no lemonade, salad, fork, or water. After waiting more, my friend finally had to yell that we wanted water and that she ordered her lemonade. Eventually, her lemonade and one glass of water and my salad were brought out; but still no fork and her food was not brought out. Later, still, my friend got up and proceeded to the front counter to see what was going on. Shortly after she left the table, her food magically appeared, as did my fork and another glass of water. Cold fries, unfortunately. It appeared that they were clearly understaffed, disorganized, and ill-prepared for the hearty crowd that visited that Sunday. One patron was so angered, he asked for a refund, and I would not have been surprised that others probably started to do the same or simply walk out. I don't know that it would be worth it to go back just for grilled cheese and a good cause, though. I would need to be convinced that they have stepped their game up. If I choose to go back, this review will be updated. Nevertheless, I do wish them the best in success, though! read more

I am so thrilled about All Square! It is a creative and effective way to bring together formerly incarcerated people with the surrounding community and break down barriers. As a new restaurant, they are still working out some kinks and doing a great job. I have been here twice, and the second time was already much improved from the first. The food was simple, but good, and the service was incredibly fast. It's definitely a casual environment and geared towards a quicker meal (not a long, fancy dinner experience). There are some mixed reviews here, so I wanted to share my experience. I first went in for a meal this summer and the food was great but it took a really long time to arrive. I respect this restaurant's social justice focus, so I decided to try it again this fall. I'm so glad I did! The people working behind the counter are always so friendly and helpful and make me feel welcome as soon as I step through the door. The food is top-notch and I don't think I've ever waited more than 10 minutes at the very most--usually more like 5 minutes. I really appreciate that they offer delicious vegan options. I have become a huge fan of their vegan version of the Floyd's grilled cheese, with capers, tomatoes, and black olives. It's so good. I see that some older reviews reference long wait times for food, so I thought it was important to say that I think this place has definitely worked out those kinks. I usually go on Saturdays right at lunch when it's fairly busy, and things have been consistently great every time. read more
