The technician spent a couple of hours diagnosing the issue and was thorough and communicative. The technician on site was not 100% conversant in English but it was important to him that I understood the problem and he did an admirable job explaining it. Then Alex called me to explain it again and his explanation was consistent with the technician's. He emailed me a detailed description of the problem along with a proposed solution and clear pricing. I paid the $200 diagnostic fee via Zelle. Unfortunately, my boiler needed several new parts in order to be safe to operate (news to me as I had just had a maintenance visit from another provider 3 month prior). The technician was emphatic that I not run the system until the problem was corrected. I understand that the team drove out of state to retrieve the necessary parts for me so that my family would not be without heat overnight. They returned the same day and installed the parts. Again, I paid the sizable but reasonable repair cost via Zelle. The team was careful to explain to me that this safety/pressure problem was not the reason for the noisy pipes! So, they fixed the dangerous issue but still needed to do a valve replacement. They came the next day to replace the valve and found that a more involved job would be necessary because of the age and condition of the radiator battery in my bedroom. But, they explained that they could not do the extensive work in the cold weather because of a risk to the pipes and a possibility that we would be without heat for an extended period of time. They replaced what they could and said they would do a more complete job in the spring when the weather is warmer. So, my pipes are still noisy and I spent a lot of money but at least my boiler is safe to operate. Assuming that they are able to complete the repair job in the spring at a reasonable cost and with the same timeliness that I have experienced so far, I will be happy to continue working with them. It is refreshing to deal with a repair company that handles client communication in such a professional manner. Everyone was careful about wet shoes and mess and all of that, which was also welcome.

Ben solved some very thorny problems with my boiler. I have a 325 MBH Burnham 2009 steam boiler in…read moremy brownstone that was failing to start up especially after it had been down for a while. I mistakenly thought it was a worn out thermocouple and tried to replace it since I saw it done last time the problem arose. Unfortunately I was doped up on Benedryl to treat a bad head cold and caused a major short circuit of the controls while attempting the work. Having no idea of the extent of the damage and how to repair it and having bad luck with my previous contractor, I submitted inquiries to several contractor referral sites. Ben is on Yelp & Thumbtack and responded to me quickly. It was the weekend and the house was getting cold so I thought I should try him. He was very methodical and thorough in his work. It took several days while he was testing and replacing wires and testing the controls. While prepared to replace all the controls, he found that he only had to replace the 12 volt transformer and low water cutoff. He drained and cleaned out the boiler prior to installing the new cutoff. Apparently the boiler had been failing to start due to sediment from the dirty water on the water level probe of the low water cut off. He advised me how to periodically clean out the boiler to prevent the problem from recurring. Contrary advice I got from my prior company led to this problem. Unlike me he knew exactly what he was doing. His solutions followed an expert step by step diagnosis which lead to finding what needed to be replaced and not replacing more than was necessary and then checking all controls to make sure the boiler is operating properly and safely. He was also a pleasure to work with: friendly and respectful. I learned three major lessons from this experience: 1. Don't assume that the solution to a problem will be the same solution next time the same problem arises. The main original problem was not a worn out thermocouple but rather dirty water. Correlation is not causation. 2. A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing and never try to do possibly hazardous work when you are not clear headed no matter how smart or brave you think you are, and 3. Always call Ben if you have another problem with the boiler even if it is just replacing a thermocouple! Thanks again Ben
