Doner, doner, doner. Be careful. Once you taste it, you're hooked. They put an addictive chemical in it that makes you crave it nightly. It's delicious and cheap. My body requested I eat some vegetables today, so I went to Ali Baba's in search of something fibrous. I felt a little rushed in the cramped, chiming space and quickly decided on the Mediterranean vegetable wrap with a spinach pie. The spinach wrap contained yogurt, hummus, a slab of fried eggplant, fresh parsley, carrot strings and probably some other roughage that remained indiscernible in the sea of yogurt. C'mon! The name alone has to at least get you interested. No? Well try some of the best Mediterranean in Atlanta. Broad street's gem, this is as good as it gets! This is no dine in place. Just enough room to get in, order, and either sit outdoors or find seating next door through the revolving doors to the left of the store. Just don't forget to grab your beverage at the open doors just a few steps away from Ali Baba's. If there's a gripe, and it is minor, is the first couple of times there, you may get called on to provide your order before you even get to look at the menu. The cashier sometimes moves slower than the food prepares, but that's okay. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that anything you order is consistently good and you will enjoy yourself. I had the chicken shish kabobs my last time here with a choice of two sides, so I had to get the hummus, phenomenal, and falafel, also really great. They'll always ask if you want your hummus spicy. AWFUL.... This is NOT worth standing on line for... Being a turkish food lover, this is straight disrespectful. I ordered the Turkish Doner which should have been a ground lamb kebab but was actually given the gyro meat... After having waited on line for almost 15 minutes in a tight spot, I just took it and went back to work. I wish I would have gone some place else, because I ended up throwing the entire styrofoam filled container in the trash after only 2 bites. Being a native NY'er that has eaten at the REAL Ali Baba off of 34th street more times that I should probably admit, I think I am more than qualified to say that this place is TRASH - but that's just my opinion. The best gyro anywhere. We have had gyros in Turkey, and all over the USA but by golly this is the best Gyro. The owner's Dad actually is a chef in Istanbul and has a chain of restaurants there employing 300. So it was no surprise for us that every item on Ali Baba's menu that we tasted here on Broad street; was very palatable, very delicious, perfectly cooked and well seasoned. We tried the Bakalwa for desert. Sinfully delicious. Like all other Bakalwas this one was not dripping or soaked in honey. The amount was just perfect. Honestly, if you haven't eaten Gyro, falafal or for that matter; if you haven't eaten at Ali Baba Cafe you have no idea what true good Turkish food tastes like. I have spent two weeks in Turkey eating at authentic restaurants and even here in Atlanta at Turkish festivals and other so called authentic Turkish and Greek outfits. Can the people who work here stop making me love them more? Probably not. I mean seriously we are at best food friend status. Mondays, some people may go to Moe's for $5 burritos, I come here for $5.25 (with tax!) wraps that probably taste a hell of a lot better. I come here like once a week now, and it's amazing it's not more often. For example, last week they had made a new side, a black eyed pea salad. I was intrigued so I was given a little sample, so I took it to eat with my gyro down in the seating. SO. GOOD. I went back to give my verdict before heading towards my class, and the farewell I get is "see you tomorrow." I stopped myself...somehow. For some reason I have enjoyed the falafel with a bit of hummus and spicy sauce on its own when given to me as a sample more than as a wrap. This could have been the work of the feta they put on it. I don't think there is any indication on the menu that they will put feta cheese on a falafel wrap, so be sure to tell them if you don't want it. I also tried the chicken wrap, which was okay, but all around I definitely love the true blue gyro the most. I also like that they have so many tables designated for their customers only outside. Today was the perfect day to eat outside, and a fellow Ali Baba diner at the table next to mine sure liked to talk. Falafel attempt #2: Nearly starving one afternoon, a group of classmates and I stumbled upon Ali Baba. I immediately noticed the falafel wrap, but I hesitated to order it. (My previous experience with falafel was less than optimal.) I let all of my friends order before me, and afer much internal debate, selected the falafel wrap with tabouli as my side. Okay...I'm still undecided about falafel. My wrap was messy, and I only received a fork with my order. Instead of going back to the place to request a knife, I relentless hacked away at the wrap with the edge of my fork. How frustrating. The tabouli, however, was excellent. The others who ordered it also concurred. When I later searched for ingredients to make my own tabouli, I discovered this interesting tidbit: in October 2009, chefs from Lebanon's state-run culinary school set a Guiness record for the largest ever dish of tabouli. Get that white woman OUT!!! She is rude and condescending, I go to Georgia state and usually go here than the other Mediterranean spot bc it is closer to my school for connivence. The white lady is trifling, first when I went with my friend, my friend had asked for a side of falafels and hummus and the white lady said "I can only give u one." We stood there shocked she explained they only make a certain amount but one is ridiculous for a side. The guy in the back looked annoyed so it seemed like this isn't the first she's done something like this. The next time I went, I decided to give the place another try, the guy behind she was screaming at him in a not so polite way, than she rung me up for 9 dollars. I was like weird okay, but maybe it was tax. I skipped and didn't give a tip bc I was picking it up and going to my next class and it was already more than I anticipated to pay, and she gave me a really weird ugly smile. Kind of like she wanted to say some foul stuff but couldn't. Keep in mind I added humus inside my wrap (that's what she was screaming at the guy for he kept putting in the box and not in the wrap) and no tip. I came one last time (today) and I asked for the guy in the back for hummus in my wrap and he said okay and did it and I said thanks. She than gave me one of those smiles I usually find with racists. And CHARGED ME 46 CENTS FOR THE HUMUS. I than asked why she did that and she said "we tip for humus and I forgot last time." The food is delicious, fast, and the staff is friendly. The falafel wrap is my recommendation, and you can get it on a regular pita (default), a spinach wrap, or a tomato wrap, with mild or hot sauce (don't worry, they'll ask you which sauce before they slather it). Sides range from dolmas to hummus to tabbouleh, all very tasty. I used to head here for a falafel wrap for $3.50 and have it with my own bottle of water. Unfortunately, they raised the price by over a dollar, which I find ridiculous. So long, Ali Baba; I think price is part of customer service, and a 25%+ raise in a year doesn't sit well with me. read more

I feel sort of bad for writing this review after seeing so many high star reviews, but honestly, I wasn't that impressed with Ali Baba. Maybe it was because it was delivered to the office instead of eaten there? I don't know, but every other Friday my office supplies lunch for the office, so last Friday they brought in Ali Baba's. If there's one thing Ali Baba does well, it's size. There was so much food! And so many types: pita, hummus, rice, salad, babaganoush, tatziki, spanakopita, dolma, chicken kabob, gyro meat, falafel, meatballs, fruit salad, baklava and I've probably still missed a few things. Anyway, the portions were huge but the taste wasn't outstanding by any means. It was filling, it was plentiful, but nothing stood out to me as oh-my-gosh-I-need-a-second-helping. It was just okay. I ordered a chicken wrap - it was a cost efficient special that came with a drink and I order a side of lentil soup. The wrap just had too much sauce on it. Taziki sauce and what ever sauce the chicken was in over powered the tasted of any chicken onions and greens included in the wrap. It was so saucy that the wrap was soggy and I really could not enjoy it. I ended up having to eat the wrap with a fork. This is suppose to be a type of street food not a saucy mess. I was not impressed and won't be ordering this item again. The lentil soup tasted pretty good. It has a nice flavor that came with a good amount of pita bread. I owe it all to Ali Baba's to what got me so addicted to gyros and falafels and Mediterranean food in general. It really is as good as it gets, especially for the Downtown/5 Points area. As a GSU student not too long ago, lunch at Ali Babas came several times a month when I could afford it. Not saying that this place is pricey, because it's not. $5 for a huge gyro is quite filling on the stomach. Add $1.25 and you get choice of side and a drink. But I was, still am, penniless. It was a treat every time, however!!! The food itself is exceptional. The lamb meat portions are generous and the falafels are fried to perfection. The ingredients are fresh and prepared daily. The staff are quick with their hands and friendly. It's no surprise the owners know me as a regular, even when I visit the L5P location sometimes! *has a halo of hearts floating over my head* The restaurant space itself is tiny! Definitely no space to sit, but they do offer outside seating on the sidewalk when weather permits and inside, down the stairs of the Healy Building that it's attached to. Besides, they treat every order like it's take-out anyways. If you're a GSU student, they offer discounts, like every other restaurant on Broad Street, but Ali Baba's, hands down, serves the best of them all. I will miss thee. This is the second-best falafel sandwich I've yet encountered (Jerusalem Bakery in Alpharetta will be tough to unseat), but that's saying something because I've eaten a lot of falafal. You might say an awful lot of falafel (go ahead- say it.) The sandwich was large and stuffed with some really fresh, tasty veggies. They had a large selection of sides to go with the combo I ordered, and after waffling on my decision (waffle falafel?) the guy dishing the food gave me two sides instead of just the one. The pasta was good, but the bean salad (chickpeas, red beans, corn, cilantro) was fantastic. I might see if they'll sell me a quart of that to go next time. It's a busy location, or at least the street outside is busy when GSU is in session, but service was pretty much immediate, and the sidewalk tables make for a nice scene when the weather is nice. I am not going to lie. I have a love love relationship with Ali Baba's. As a downtowner, I love the Broad Street lunch choices and for me Ali Baba is the best of the bunch. I adore their hummus, the wraps are great and the prices cannot be beat. I always walk away with way more food than I can handle and I know I will be full and happy for hours. The best part about Ali Baba's though is the staff. They are so friendly and kind and when they learned I was a newbie the first time I went, they let me sample some of the behind the counter offerings. What could be better than that? So good that when I got back to the office and a co-worker asked what I had for lunch today, I told her I just was out of the building and picked up lunch. Wow...I was impressed. There are a lot of Mediterranean eateries here in the Metro area, but for the quality and price - what a great value! I got lunch here this past Tuesday and had their lunch special which included cubed chicken, rice, chick peas, and I opted for hot sauce (which isn't terribly hot, but just the right amount of spiciness) and tzatziki sauce plus 2 sides. I opted for the hummus and then a little bit of of tabbolui, a pita, and one other side (cannot remember which one it was). They let me have smaller portions so I could try more things. And all of this was $7.25 (after tax) and included a fountain soda. Granted...the drawbacks to this place may be that they're only open during the day Monday - Friday and there is only outdoor seating (and street parking only), it's still a great meal if you're in the area. Conveniently located smack dab in the middle of Fairly Poplar, Ali Baba's is the perfect place to grab a quick delicious healthy lunch. You can note by the always present lunch-time line that extends out into the walkway that food is consistently good, fast, and cheap. The staff is always really friendly and accommodating, and when you're surrounded by shitty fast-food joints constantly, it's a breathe of fresh air to have some delectable healthy food choices. Was in Atlanta for a meeting this morning and was walking to catch the train to the airport and decide to find some lunch and just happened to find this place! So glad I walked up the street which I have no idea what the name was but found this tiny hole in the wall place!!! I knew I had found the right place to eat when little old ladies from the Middle East were buying bread from them. I lived in Turkey/north Cyprus for 4 years and this was one of the best doner kabob that I have had since being back in the states. I even had a few Iraq's sitting next to me! I love this place! I'm a regular there as someone who works downtown. They claim to have the best falafel and they really do. I usually get the falafel salad vs. the wrap but you can't go wrong either way. Also, all of their soups are amazing. My favorites are the tomato basil and the mushroom soups. The crab corn chowder is also delicious. M-F from noon-1 pm is the most crowded time, unsurprisingly. There is always a line for Ali Baba's. The prices a so reasonable as well. You can get a complete and drink for less than $10. Can't beat it for lunch. read more

Took a risk on this place since the Greek cafe across the street shut down. Should have stuck with GLC or Aviva for my Mediterranean food. I ordered the chicken gyro and the meat was just bad. Seemed like expired chicken that was slow cooked with tons of spices to try and mask the decay. Nice folks inside and it was quick. Cold sides looked ok so I may give it another shot. Their food IS AMAZING. It's amazing and cheap. Some of the best mediterranean food around. The cooks are super nice and will work with you about sides and extras, etc. but the horrible woman working the cash register is actually horrible and almost always makes me wish I had gone somewhere else. She yells at customers and talks down to them. She is rude to the cooks too. Not bad enough for me to stop eating there because it's so good but omg please tell that cashier to stop being so generally awful. I hate standing in line listening to her berate customers while I wait for my food. I hate that I have to request my 10% discount. What the hell? I've come back to Ali Baba a couple of times to make sure that my tastebuds weren't deceiving me, but the food's just awful. I really don't understand all of these four- and five-star reviews. The falafel wrap was, without a doubt, one of the worst things I've attempted to eat in the past year. Stone-cold, soggy balls of falafel. Rancid-tasting toppings. I took two, maybe three bites, and chucked the rest of my wrap into the trash. My subsequent visits, during which I tried both the lamb and chicken doner kebab wraps, fared slightly better, but not by much. No utter revulsion from me on these visits, but the meats here were still pretty mediocre, the dry and flavorless chicken in particular. If I had to pick something, I'd stick with the lamb doner kebab, but I'd rather just avoid this place altogether. Fortunately, I wasn't out much cash, since the meals here are dirt cheap, despite their including a side of hummus, baba ghanoush, dolmas, tabouli, fruit salad, or pasta salad. It's difficult to find a cheaper meal that's just as filling while you're downtown (Rosa's, maybe?). Still, I won't be back. read more

I'm back in Atlanta for work for a few days and decided to try something new. There's another Mediterranean restaurant that I always walk past but when I checked their menu it seemed like their gyro is a mix of beef and chicken rather than lamb. So I hopped on Yelp and found Ali Baba. It's basically just a walk up counter with no indoor seating and it seems like everything is packaged to go. There were 3 people in front of me but it moved quickly and I was probably in and out in around 5 minutes. When it was my turn to order the guy handed me a sample of falafel which was very good but I already knew I wanted a lamb gyro. He asked if I wanted it spicy, which I've never been asked before when ordering a gyro. I said no and also asked for no onions. I ordered a side of babaganush which comes with pita slices, and they also threw in another side dip. I have no idea what it was, but it was tasty, as was the rest of the meal. I started eating the babaganush and I thought that I didn't even need to order the gyro, I would have been happy just snacking on babaganush all afternoon. Then I eventually tried the gyro and OMG, I loved it. The lamb was amazing - very tender and flavorful. The tzaiki sauce was great too and everything just tasted wonderful together. The portion size is huge too and the whole meal only came to $8.35. This is definitely going to be one of the regular restaurants I visit whenever I'm in Atlanta. read more
