This place is a little gem with an extensive menu. There is something for everyone. My husband got the Al Capone, I had the Here's the Beef and my son had the Phili Cheese Steak. We also ordered a side of the potato salad. Let's start with the bread. I have a love affair with bread. This bread is so fresh, you can smell it when you walk in. It's soft and the crust is light, but still has a bit of that crunch when you bite into it. The horseradish sauce on my beef sandwich was just enough to add flavor, but not overpower the sandwich. The condiments were all crisp and fresh. They did not skimp on the meat in our sandwiches. My husband enjoyed his so much he barely spoke as he ate it. The potato salad was really flavorful. It is a small serving, but is less than a buck and a half and worth every penny. The sandwich portions are plentiful compared to the prices. For over 15 years, this local guy has slugged it out against the giant sandwich chains, and by all accounts is winning....big time. On a mid Sunday afternoon, this place was jammed. With a long list of pre-customized sandwiches of all types, quality proteins, fresh-baked breads, and fresh vegetables make all the difference in the world. Salads, 1/2 pound fresh sirloin burgers, Red Hot Chicagodogs, and house-made soups round out the menu. Dirty brand chips, created by the late Ron Zapp in Grammercy, Louisiana are available, and beverages are by Coca-Cola. This place is a little spendier, and a little slower than the chains, but the wait and the dosh are worth with. The wait is made more pleasant by the demeanor and attractiveness of the woman behind the counter. I tried their best seller, the Al Capone, which is capacola, salami, pepperoni, mortadella, provolone and black olives. Most sandwiches are dressed with mayo, mustard, tomato, onion, pickle, lettuce, oregano and balsamic dressing. Upgrade to a multi-grain roll for 45 cents. The sandwich is easily in the top five of this type of roll that I have eaten anywhere in the world, anywhere. The burgers are outstanding. Big beefy flavor, with a little smoke undertone, and a slight char. Soft rolls. At 8 ounces, it's a monster, and at $6.49, it's a steal. Shoestring fries are crispy, salty, and delicious, with or without Chicago's favorite cheese sauce. Support local business. It's small, cute, homey and the menu is over whelming! This sub shop has been around for awhile now, and I just recently discovered it. They have several different veggie subs and all of them are amazing! My friends and I go there all the time, and we have never been disappointed. Subs, wraps, burgers, salads, soups, fries...the list goes on and on. One small downside all subs are $6-7. But, they are well worth it. Update: I went here today (4/5/10) and I think I have to say their subs are better than, dare I say it, Hero's Subs. I never thought I would say that. I think it's their bread that helped make my decision, plus the ingredients are so fresh. Start out with one of their fantastic soups and move on to one of their awesome sandwiches. I head of Algonquin Sub Shop so long ago,but never thought I'd visit...why are you so far???? So glad I stopped on the way home for take out because everyone needs to try one of their subs at least once. I opted for the Al Capone. Basically their Italian sub with Capacola, Salami, Pepperoni, Mortadella, Provolone and olives. I had them add the lettuce, onion, pickles, tomato and balsamic dressing. First, this place is nothing to look at..it's a shack, a divey shack. Second, it seemed to take forever to make my sandwich. This aint no conveyer belt/Subway station for sure. But all those little negatives flew away with the first bite I took. Oh wow. Now THIS is a sandwich. It held up wonderfully all the way back to Chicago. The bread is super fresh. Chewy in a good way. And the meat and extras--totally neatly stacked between and the bread and a great meat to bread ratio as well! This is a heart sandwich. Worth the wait in a divey shack for sure. I've always said that the measure of a good meal is that none of it, including the crumbs, remain when the meal ends. Over the last few years, our teens have eaten at this establishment many time and today, my wife and I took the plunge. We had decided on the Phily Cheesesteak sub but changed our minds at the counter and went with the Hermann Munster sub, large cheese fries and fountain soda. All I can say is Bravo! This place has a real hole in the wall vibe. It's off of Route 31 next to the food and liquor store and what seems to be a heady shop. The sub shop has a rustic cabin like decor with amicable seating. I don't stray far from their number one sandwich which is the Al Capone, but many of my friends have tried their other sandwiches and they have all had a great time. They give out a generous amount of fries and they spice it with some herby salt similar to what steak and shake has. Their berry teas are very delicious too; sweet but not too sweet and enough to still call it a tea! WAS suppose to be "garlic chicken", but no garlic taste at all! bread hard, no coupons accepted, no senior discounts and prices are outrageous!!! As a senior, I guess I'm expecting too much. Every time I order from here the sandwich comes out with some mystery ingredients on it that are not listed on the menu. Sometimes the sandwich comes out completely different than what I ordered. What I just witnessed was sadly against health code. Lady ordered no salt frys she got the frys they had salt. Instead of tossing the basket of frys that went to the customer they were put into the bin and then refried to get the salt off. Once the customer has the food and gives it back it has to be remade. I hope they change the oil in the fryers because now it's contaminated and actually will break down faster. And thankfully I was picking up a door dash order now I know to tell people not to eat here nor will I be eating here. read more

I don't know why this place doesn't have like 27 stars. It is FAMOUS in the neighborhood and for good reason. I just moved nearby recently and we have gone at least 10 times. Their menu is vast and full of delicious and unique sandwiches made to order. Their tuna salad is a knockout but the Al Capone is the most popular. Great for kids, lunch breaks, families, and take out. Ample seating inside and out with parking in front and back of the shop. Servers are super nice and you can tell they love working there. Only downside is that they close at 8pm! I wish they were open later. Sometimes there is a crowd (because its great) so make sure you have time going at peak hours and do wait because its worth your time. Specials of the day are also killer. I had one of the best Cuban sandwiches ever as a daily special. I could go on and on but I won't; just go already. read more
