You know I want to like this place, I really do. Love local places like this but I've gone here 3 different times and gotten 3 different sandwiches and I gotta say they just don't taste that great. It seems like the ingredients are pretty good quality, turano bread ...eh, it's ok not great bread but I can look past that if tastes good. Unfortunately it's just kind of boring sandwiches. I think they need to come up with some more interesting stuff, personally. A lot of people like the boring stuff though and it seems to be working for them but this place would knock it out of the park if they could get some more interesting sauces and sandwich ideas. Bubs subs, when they were around, baked their own bread and made their own sauces and came up with some really interesting sandwiches like their fire bird. I got the Al Capone it was very good. I've lived here for a few months and have been waiting to get time to go here. The meat is great the sandwich was plentiful. My daughter recommended this place. I can't believe I slept on this place for so long. I drive by a couple times a week, but it was always late after they closed. Today I happened to drive by at a reasonable time with no dinner plans so I dropped in. Had the special (chicken cappi) and split pea soup. Both were great. The sandwich was flavorful with fresh ingredients on nice soft bread, but not so over-stuffed it was hard to eat. The soup was fresh-tasting and not too salty like a lot of split pea can be. Service was fast and friendly, and the dining room has great hole-in-the-wall neighborhood charm. And I saw they have cherry coke in the fountain, too! Oh man, I will be back. read more

Sandwiches are good. Service depends on when you go bc I always order the fries well done but they skipped that part of the order because the fries were so soggy it was wild. Algonquin Sub Shop is more of an institution than just your run-of-the-mill sub shop. It's been around for ages and I remember coming here when I was back in college. Its menu is inventive, they use fresh ingredients, and there is some charm. However, the wait time can be really long. I waited about 25 minutes for two sandwiches, some fries, and a soup. My husband's sandwich, (#25), the Texas Chili Rub, was flavorful and filling. My sandwich, (#15) tuna, was just meh. The bread was great, but the tuna was somewhat bland and had nothing pickled or salted on it, making it tasteless. However, the tomatoes and greens on top were ripe and delicious. The cream of chicken and rice soup didn't feel like it was salted or something. It was pretty bland. Maybe it was an off day. read more

My wife and I have lived in Algonquin for three years with our family of 7 but have not had the experience that is the sun shop. Today we ordered ahead via mobile order and picked up a large fry and the Al Capone sandwich. The order said it would only take ten minutes and they hit it right on the nose! The staff were friendly and engaging and very on top of orders as over twenty orders were being prepared during their lunch rush. This unassuming shop is easily passable when driving through Algonquin, but I cannot recommend it enough. The sandwich, which is their take on the traditional Italian, is the BEST Italian sub I've had in quite some time. What is crazier is the fact that their fries are even better! Whatever they season them with is the key. We'll be coming back time and time again. Only negative is their hours of operation. Little standalone sub shop with the best darn sub we have ever enjoyed - #9 The California Grilled Chicken seared in honey and garlic, with Sun Dried Tomato and melted Cheddar. Warm, gooey and absolutely delicious. We also enjoyed the #3 with high quality roast beef and some horseradish sauce (we would have liked more sauce). The small fries were hot and were a huge portion. The potato salad was awesome - mashed red skin potatoes flavored to perfection. Little hole in the wall with friendly counter service. Husband drove from Elgin to Algonquin to get lunch. We've always wanted to try this place and he was willing to go get lunch yesterday. I had the Al Capone. It was good but honestly a little weird with mayo, lettuce and cold cuts on a hot sandwich. My husband had the "Here's the beef "sandwich, which she said it was very good, but probably wouldn't drive back to Algonquin just for the sandwich. Had the loaded baked potato soup which was really good, I probably would've liked it a little bit creamier, but overall had a very good flavor. But all it took was a crook and a sandwich named after him. There is nothing quite like the Capone, but I do enjoy venturing away from the #1 to sample the wide variety offered. One mainstay to every order, however, is the fries. Always just right, and always more than enough. These subs have character, and though they may be a step up in price compared to sandwich chains, it's only because what you're getting here exists on a completely different tier. Don't let this deter you from all the delicious sandwiches waiting for you inside! They do get VERY busy. The wait time is sometimes pretty long. I'd recommend calling ahead with your order. There have been times where they shut off delivery temporarily due to demand. Everything is fresh on premises. The bread is phenomenal and holds up to the heft of all those freshly sliced meats and cheeses. My typical go-to is the "#1 Al Capone". It is piled high with Salami, Pepperoni, Mortadella, Capicola, Provolone, and Black Olive. The sandwiches are piled high, no skimping here! I could barely finish my sandwich, easily two meals there. I have yet to try their soups or hot food offerings. However, I am confident the rest of the food is as amazing as the sandwiches. Drove past this shop countless times while going through Algonquin and finally got the chance to try it out! We absolutely love the yellow color of the building, it's so cute and makes the restaurant really easy to find. Came pretty close to closing hours so ordered our food to go, only took about 10-15 minutes for all 4 of our sandwiches to be made! The lady taking our orders at the front was so kind and told us interesting stories, made us feel welcome. We ordered two of the Al Capone sandwiches, an Italian beef, and a Philly Cheese Steak. All of them were gone minutes upon opening the wrapper. Two in our party ordered the big size of the sub but the other two ordered the smaller size and they still filled us up pretty darn good! This place is the best! It is a quaint and cute little yellow sub shop in Algonquin. If you want a fresh sub, you've come to the right place. Their bread is homemade and they have a wide variety of sub options. Usually takes around 5-10 mins, I recommend ordering ahead of time especially during busier hours. Today I had the "Gobbler" which was fantastic. Your basic turkey sandwich STACKED with turkey, and we also tried their seasoned fries & cheese this time which were also delicious. I used to feel this was a five star shop. I'm taking my ratings down to two stars. Why? First the prices. It now costs you $17 to get half a sub, fries and a small drink. And the small drink is not like a small from anywhere else. It's like an 8 ounce cup. Second the fries a salted and seasoned so heavily that you just can't eat them. I mean it is terrible. This place used to have the best fries. Not anymore. They are inedible. And this has happened to me twice now. Last time I was here it was the same way. I told them today if I spend $17 on food that it should be edible. I threw most of the fries away. I told them something must have changed with what they do as it's been terrible the last two times. Then one of the cooks told me to be nicer and not call anyone an idiot. I never used that term in my complaint. I said the food was inedible not that someone was an idiot. It's really sad as John when he was alive would never have said that to someone. I'm really not sure anymore when or if I will come back. So actually making this one star. They lost me as a customer. When I went back in from their patio to leave, I found the cook who claimed I called another guy an idiot and told him I said the "food was not edible" not that I called someone an idiot. He basically blew me off. Terrible service. The right answer would have been, "I am sorry. Let us make you some new fries." Nope they were unwilling to listen to a customer complaint.
