I came during the pandemic time. When things reopen. I arrived at the restaurant at 11:20 and placed an order at 11:23 in the parking lot. About seven minutes after I arrived I still did not receive my food which is fine but a number of people started to show up. Makes sense, of course it's lunchtime but I waited in my vehicle for 40 minutes for my sandwiches and as I waited 40 minutes for my food knowing I was the first person in the parking lot. I watched as other people arrived after me receive their food 20 minutes before myself. After a 40 minute wait for sandwiches and the rudeness of watching everybody after me arrive receive their food I will no longer go to this sandwich sub shop. I supported them because they are family owned but the lack of customer service and lack of taking customers in order, it is obvious that they need help. I am incredibly disappointed and I was disappointed at how much these sandwiches cost me for how long I had to sit in my car and wait for them. At the end it was not worth the cost and or the wait. This Place is the Real Deal!! A former girlfriend turned me one to this place about 15 yrs ago. It is one of the few things I remember about her that makes me smile. Their Subs are outstanding.. my personal favorites are the Smoke Stack.or the Grilled Italian Veggie. Subway, Quiznos, Blimpies all fail in comparison to the Algonquin Sub Shop. They may not turnout the sandwiches as fast as the Chain Stores.. but theirs definitely blow them away in the taste Department. I've lived in Algonquin my entire life and have passed the Algonquin Sub Shop thousands of times. I rarely saw more than one or two cars in the lot and I'd always wondered how such a little shack of a place had been open for so long. A few weeks ago, my brother called me saying he was in the mood for a sub and asked if I wanted him to pick one up for me. I said sure - you know what I like, just pick something up. Well...to my surprise, the sandwich I received didn't say Subway or Jimmy John's on the paper wrapping. I was a bit thrown off - not sure where he found a no-name sub shop. I opened it up to find a ridiculously stacked sub. Real chicken breasts? Fresh avocado? Fresh bakery style bread? It was, needless to say, the most amazing sub I've ever tasted. We drove all the way from buffalo grove because of the great reviews and boy am I glad we made the trek. Elaine was the nicest lady I have met in a long time, she gave us a coupon and some of her homemade cakes free! (the brownie is the best chocolate desert I have ever had!) The BEST sub shop on the PLANET! I would franchise this in the city, just so I could eat here everyday. If I'm within 25 minutes of Algonquin I'll drive out of my way just to get the Where's Waldorf sandwich. Apples, brie cheese, sweet peppers, walnuts and spinach. With some secret sauce. Food wise, this place is a 5+. The best sandwiches in the area. Service wise, this place is a 2. Staff is rude. One person in particular who works there ruins the experience every time we go there. Recently, i picked up an order which was called in. One of the sandwiches was completely incorrect. When I called up to discuss, the woman who answered the phone gave me attitude, hanging up on me as I was explaining the situation. I did get my sandwich replaced. However, when i tried to explain what happened to the same person who answered the phone, she picked up the replacement sandwich in a bag from behind the counter and dropped it on the counter. I had brought the incorrect sandwich with me so they could see what was wrong, and it was swiped out of my hand. No apology, no thanks. Nothing. Its a shame a place with such good food has such poor customer service. When you spend $30-50 a week there, its obvious the food is good. How many more times will this continue before I take my business elsewhere. read more

Wow! This place is fantastic. At least all the food is. The bread is delicious and the meats used are thicker cuts than you'd get at like a JJ's or Subway (which is like comparing apples to oranges). The soup and sandwich combo is usually what I get , you get a little over half of a sub and soup. All the soups I've tried there are fantastic and my favorite subs are the Chicken ones #9 and #18. The cheese fries there are delicious as well with perfect dipping cheese, not that watered down crap. The seating area inside is a little unpleasant and you wait usually about 10 min or so for a sub but it is well worth the wait. If I could eat there every day I would. I usually don't like to change things up but I would like to try every sub on the menu. Especially the gyro, I'm a sucker for gyros, and a gyro sub sounds right up my alley. I saw the shop featured on a CLTV program over the weekend so I made it a point to try out, I drove across town specifically to try a sub. I had a #19 Philly sub. I had a few positive takeaways and a few areas of improvement. First off the sub was just ok, a bit bland and lacked flavor. I wouldn't recommend the sub. Another negative, please clean the bugs from the ceiling light.... If I didn't already pay I would have never ordered, gross. Lastly how about some customer service skills.... Saying hello can I help you rather than just staring at me waiting for me to order. On a positive note my sub was hot and served fresh. Love the bread it is served on. I took mine to go and it stayed hot all the way home and they put plenty of napkins in the bag (not just one napkin like subway I hate that place). Plenty of meet served on the sub. My sub was 8 bucks, seems to be the going rate. I'm going to give this place another shot with a different sub when I'm in the area but I'm not driving across town again just to go there. read more

Take it to go kinda dirty and smells like garbage outside. Tasty sub a bit expensive at about $8.50 but worth a try. I would go back. Chili is interesting, if you are a chili buff stay away from it. I can't say that it wasn't good, it was very good. The only problem is the sandwich was so small. It was cut in half and each half was almost 3 inches. Well, that's my last trip for A.S.S. 20 minutes for a philly cheese steak and fries. My order was forgot about and the sandwich was sitting next to the fries while those that ordered after me continued to receive their orders. Even after I asked about my order, the fry cook said it was coming, then served her friend (whom she called by first name) the next batch of fries while I stood there waiting. I had to wait for her to cook yet another batch of fries. By the time I got home (4 minute drive) my philly cheese steak was luke warm at best. Everything I have tried on their menu is just delicious. I do suggest you go with their most famous sandwich. The #1 the one, and the only... The Capone! All I can think of is either the positive reviews were bribes or these reviews are mostly very old from a time when the sub shop had better days. Having gone just last week I was extremely disappointed in the changes in food quality that I experienced and also the condition of the shop. I ordered a turkey and cheese sub sandwich on wheat and a tomato vsoup. Bread was stale and the cheese that was supposed to be melted was soggy and lumpy instead of nicely melted and toasted. The tomato cream soup tasted spoiled. And the restaurant smells like a spoiled milk mop. I went and had lunch there with family that recommended it. They were a bit short handed but were very apologetic so that was forgivable. They were definitely hustling behind the counter to keep up. I split the whole Al Capone and an order of fries with my sis and we were not disappointed. I loved how the meat and cheese was grilled and the bread was toasted, warm and so good! Ive been hereing about this place for years. Finally got to try it and was very disappointed. Took forever to make three subs chili and fries. The chili was like a bowl of ragu pasta sauce.
