Alfreda makes good pizza, but that's not good enough to elevate above a mediocre, "ok" experience. I visited for happy hour on a Monday at 5 PM. All I knew about Alfreda going in was that it was a pizza place headed by a former fine dining chef and got pretty good reviews. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place was not very busy. While we were there, it ranged from about 6 people to 12 people total, which accounted for maybe 20% of seats.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There were 2 staff handling drinks, orders, and bussing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I did not like the space. The air conditioning wasn't working well (or at all) so the place was hot and humid, only a bit cooler than the outside DC summer weather.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place had very basic, sparse decor and the furniture looked and felt cheap. The banquette seating was extremely uncomfortably.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Sorry, but it felt like the place opened on a shoestring budget. Service was inattentive, even with the restaurant not very busy. For example, I had to ask for more water multiple times. They were not quick or proactive with anything, but they were friendly enough. The happy hour menu is ok but not great. Happy hour is 4-6 PM M-F and includes $8 spritzes and "BOGO Pizza" (then in small print: "Buy any pizza get a plain pizza free"). BOGO pizza is a great headline, but it's misleading; BOGO usually means you get another of the same thing. The spritz menu has 6 options, including two n/a options, but I would like other drink options on special. They are all pretty fruity and sweet, and sometimes you don't want that. We got the Asparagus and Mushroom pie ($27) and a free plain pie (normally $21) and a few spritzes. The pies and drinks were good, but nothing special. The asparagus worked well on the pizza. The crusts were nice and crisp and not too doughy. It was on par with most other decent pizza in DC, which is another way of saying I wouldn't go out of my way to get it here again. As for the rest of the menu, the other pizza options were not particularly interesting or unusual, except for the Potato pie. A word of warning: the website menu is not accurate to reality. I don't see the asparagus pie on it, and it mentions pies like Guanciali & Mango and Steak & Cheese that I didn't see on the real menu. Overall, cannot recommend.

Fresh and real ingredients! That's what I thought of when I tried a pizza from Alfreda. If you're not paying attention, you can walk right by this place because it's very unassuming on the outside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However, the inside is very cute and would make for a nice date night with a partner, friend, or solo.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I can see why people rave about the sourdough crust. That was my favorite part of the pizza. The sauce was fresh and I liked that it wasn't too heavy on the cheese. Also, I could tell they use was quality cheese. I got mushrooms on my pizza, but I don't think they added much distinction of flavor. Next time, I would just get the plain like my friend. The service was great! Everyone was attentive and made sure we had a great experience.

Yum!! We got the Caesar salad - berry yummy with the sourdough breadcrumbs and a hard boiled egg- so interesting. We got the Alfreda pizza which was sooo delicious! For Drinks - we got the dirtiest martini which wasn't quite the dirtiest I've had but it was still good. The star was the sourdough donuts special for dessert - large, warm, cinnamon sugary donuts with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream omg best dessert ive had in a long time!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a cute lovely spot and our servers were nice and attentive[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The staff here is amazing - they are quite kind, but Alfreda seems lost within the restaurant world. It's not a cheap spot, a salad, pizza, and glass of wine will cost you $70 before tip, and the salad and the wine just aren't that good. The pizza is good, but it's not great. It's not like you're getting one of the best pizzas you have ever had in your life. Sure, the dipping sauce is great, but the pizza is just good, and you can't make a pizza place on dipping sauce alone. I was hoping for an experience like Dear Martha when I came here, and if it was like Dear Martha, I would have been pleased with the price tag. [[HIGHLIGHT]]But everything from vibes to wine does not hit, and it's hard to justify your time here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They need to define themselves, perhaps renovate, create better salads, find a niche beyond pretty good pizza and great dipping sauce that makes it worth it coming for this. I just don't see a path to them staying open forever if they remain on this path.

If you're looking for some of the best pizza in DC, Alfreda Pizza deserves a spot at the top of your list. The thin crust is exactly how I like it--crispy, light, and packed with flavor without feeling heavy. The sourdough is made fresh each day and you never leave feeling bloated . The Alfreda pizza is my favorite, but the pepperoni pizza is a close second. You really can't go wrong with either. What keeps us coming back, though, is more than just the food. The chef is incredibly attentive ( he will come out to chat at times) and clearly takes pride in every pizza that comes out of the kitchen. The staff is genuinely warm and welcoming, making every visit feel like you're a regular. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My son absolutely loves going there, which says a lot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's become one of those places we're always happy to return to. If you appreciate great pizza, friendly people, and a restaurant that truly cares about the customer experience, Alfreda Pizza is a must-visit.

I've been here twice now, with timing spaced far apart and the pizza was incredible both times. The Alfreda dipping sauce is also out of this world. But price is definitely tough--as much as I love the pizza, the bill gives me sticker shock each time I go.

Forgot to take an earlier picture until after we ate - Alfreda pizza and plain pizza with mushrooms.

This place was wonderful and a great addition to the DuPont circle scene. They have deals every weekday from 4-6pm with a bogo pizza (not you have to buy one plain and another of your choice and toppings are extra). The pizzas were so good, especially the Alfreda pizza. My friends and I got the plain with mushrooms, though I would choose another topping next time. They don't accept reservations but because we came early, it was easy to find a spot in the restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It did get filled up after a bit on a Friday night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is great and they have blinds if the sunlight may be too much.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, definitely check this place out if you're in the area!

This pizza slaps so hard. Crispy on the bottom everything is perfect. I don't know what else to say.

I always take a risk ordering pizza outside NJ/NY/CT. Fortunately I came here on a holiday weekend so the locals were away and there was no line and lots of empty tables. Ordered the plain and white pies and both were delicious with just the right amount of crunch and cheese to sauce ratio. There's an ample selection of alcohol to down the pizzas. There's only strange occurrence as the waiter kept coming to my table to show the food that other people had ordered before delivering it to their tables. Odd. Not odd enough to prohibit a return!

This place is a banger. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's never super crowded and their bogo deal + happy hour is the best in the city.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] $8 for spritz drinks (many choices) and then buy a pizza, get another free. Can't beat it. This is my third time here in just a few months. Will be a repeat spot. Great location in Adam's Morgan. Staff is super nice. Go here!! Happy hour and bogo is 4-6 Monday through Friday. This pizza SLAPS!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Super cozy and great for a dinner before a night out or fun date night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Forgot to grab pics of the food!

    Half eaten sausage pizza

This was a tough one: the pizza was pretty good, but was it worth $29 for a 12" individual pie? Likewise, while I got takeout and everyone was very friendly, I was stunned to find a 20% service charge tacked on to the bill, which they removed as soon as I asked about it. And the $14 Caesar salad was not bad, but definitely not worthy of so much money for a side salad. Regarding the pizza: I ordered the Alfreda with sausage, and it was very good. Neither great nor New Havem caliber, but a solid pizza. Good crust, quality cheese, a bright tomato sauce, and very tasty sausage. But I ask a rhetorical question again: was it worth $29? IMHO no pizza is. The entire takeout meal set me back nearly $48 including tax. The bottom line is that it was ok but I would not repeat as I felt it was overpriced while nothing truly special.

    Big happy hour spot
    Max L.

This place is pretty great. They've got a great few spritzes, but I think they should offer more for a place that's all about cocktails and wine. They should have more spritzes but the ones they have are good. The pizzas are also pretty good. Maybe a pasta dish or two should be a added. Not a big menu. You can kind of go there once and you've seen everything they've got. But that one time is pretty good. They should trust their chef with more. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's a real opportunity in this area for a nice, but casual Italian spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Look ladies and gentlemen cheaper does not always mean better, but I digress. The food came out surprisingly very fast which to me I had noticed with skepticism as there is a lot of processed type of meats here. The sandwich relies on a lot of bread, and cheese (brisket) with very think slices of meat, so it is like eating a grilled cheese sandwich. The potato salad had big chunks of pickles and even though I know potato salad at restaurants are not going to taste like homemade version a lot of the times, but still the level of attention to detail was missing a bit with chucks in the potato salad. There should be regular fries not just spicy and same with beans. The restaurant caters towards the White and foreign gentrification of the city by ignoring and distancing itself from the Black community of the city. The transient dollar always wins, as Shaw is the most intensively gentrified neighborhood in DC for good reason. I would personally stick with Mission BBQ and maybe Famous Daves chains, if you are not going to be a homemade pit master or cook yourself those ribs for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Sometimes you want to treat yourself from always cooking in the kitchen, but gosh can these places step their game up and stop selling out? What is next we will have raisins and fruit in our potato salad? I came in excited thinking this place was going to be amazing, but there needs to be a bit of improvement with the food quality. The bartender was friendly, personable, and had great energy which is a plus, but the take out experience was worst than mediocre. It is one of those one and done spots. Remember the old TV show Cheers? That's the vibe. Everybody seems to know everybody. You head down those steep, borderline life-threatening stairs into this underground pub and immediately walk into organized chaos in the best way possible. The place was packed. After-work crews, regulars, friend groups, people eating, drinking, laughing, and minding everybody else's business all at the same time. It was LOUD loud. The kind of loud where you have to lean in to hear your friends. At first, it looked like there was absolutely no chance we'd get a seat, but the staff stayed on it and worked hard to make it happen. It took a while because this isn't the type of place where people eat and leave. Folks settle in, order another round, and stay for hours. Speaking of rounds, the bartenders do not believe in weak drinks. The pours were generous and then some. Now let's discuss the real star of the show: THE CHICKEN WINGS. Every table seemed to have an order. Every person walking by seemed to have a basket. Everyone knows you come to Stan's for two things: strong drinks and those famous chicken wings. Oysters were smaller than I thought they'd be but SO FLAVORFUL and just the right amount of brine, and slid beautifully from the shell 10/10 The deviled eggs were given a 10/10, presentation was beautiful and the pickled relish was a well rounded addition We then finished up by sharing the cheasapeake eggs Benedict! Which featured their famous crab cake. The HOLLANDAISE?? literally danced in my mouth. The crab meat was so tender and buttery! Only difference I would've loved if the smoked paprika that was on the deviled eggs to also be featured on the Benedict! Over all it was a very lovely and sense awakening experience 9/10
