Came here for dinner based on a recommendation. If you come here, you are here for the pizza pies. They also offer gluten-free pizza options. The regular pizzas use a sourdough base and, instead of a thick tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes. We loved it and will be coming again. The location is nice and has a casual and quiet vibe. It does have a bar, but I don't think you are coming here just for the drinks, although they have some nice cocktails. The service was reasonable. I got this delivered from DoorDash. The wings were exceptionally crispy! I highly recommend. They didn't put the sauce on them but in a separate container. The buffalo sauce wasn't an orange- red but a red more like tomato hot sauce. The wings were great themselves and w dressing. The meatball ricotta pizza was a 10/10. Highly recommend. Then I got the Alfreda special pizza and had sausage added. Alfreda makes good pizza, but that's not good enough to elevate above a mediocre, "ok" experience. I visited for happy hour on a Monday at 5 PM. All I knew about Alfreda going in was that it was a pizza place headed by a former fine dining chef and got pretty good reviews. The place was not very busy. While we were there, it ranged from about 6 people to 12 people total, which accounted for maybe 20% of seats. There were 2 staff handling drinks, orders, and bussing. I did not like the space. The air conditioning wasn't working well (or at all) so the place was hot and humid, only a bit cooler than the outside DC summer weather. The place had very basic, sparse decor and the furniture looked and felt cheap. The banquette seating was extremely uncomfortably. Sorry, but it felt like the place opened on a shoestring budget. Service was inattentive, even with the restaurant not very busy. For example, I had to ask for more water multiple times. They were not quick or proactive with anything, but they were friendly enough. The happy hour menu is ok but not great. Happy hour is 4-6 PM M-F and includes $8 spritzes and "BOGO Pizza" (then in small print: "Buy any pizza get a plain pizza free"). BOGO pizza is a great headline, but it's misleading; BOGO usually means you get another of the same thing. The spritz menu has 6 options, including two n/a options, but I would like other drink options on special. They are all pretty fruity and sweet, and sometimes you don't want that. We got the Asparagus and Mushroom pie ($27) and a free plain pie (normally $21) and a few spritzes. The pies and drinks were good, but nothing special. The asparagus worked well on the pizza. The crusts were nice and crisp and not too doughy. It was on par with most other decent pizza in DC, which is another way of saying I wouldn't go out of my way to get it here again. As for the rest of the menu, the other pizza options were not particularly interesting or unusual, except for the Potato pie. A word of warning: the website menu is not accurate to reality. I don't see the asparagus pie on it, and it mentions pies like Guanciali & Mango and Steak & Cheese that I didn't see on the real menu. Overall, cannot recommend. read more

Had a group get there right at opening on Sunday. There wasn't any lines and were able to get in without issue. The ambiance is a cool vibe that I would describe as somewhere between chill and upscale. The food was amazing. We ended up getting 3 different pies ( Alfreda, potato, and meatball with ricotta). All 3 pies were amazing. They were slightly charred on the undercarriage which really adds to their flavor. We also had an amazing Caesar salad and the cheese garlic bread; only downside was that it came with 2 instead of more. Definitely check this place out if you are in the DC area. Fresh and real ingredients! That's what I thought of when I tried a pizza from Alfreda. If you're not paying attention, you can walk right by this place because it's very unassuming on the outside. However, the inside is very cute and would make for a nice date night with a partner, friend, or solo. I can see why people rave about the sourdough crust. That was my favorite part of the pizza. The sauce was fresh and I liked that it wasn't too heavy on the cheese. Also, I could tell they use was quality cheese. I got mushrooms on my pizza, but I don't think they added much distinction of flavor. Next time, I would just get the plain like my friend. The service was great! The staff here is amazing - they are quite kind, but Alfreda seems lost within the restaurant world. It's not a cheap spot, a salad, pizza, and glass of wine will cost you $70 before tip, and the salad and the wine just aren't that good. The pizza is good, but it's not great. It's not like you're getting one of the best pizzas you have ever had in your life. Sure, the dipping sauce is great, but the pizza is just good, and you can't make a pizza place on dipping sauce alone. I was hoping for an experience like Dear Martha when I came here, and if it was like Dear Martha, I would have been pleased with the price tag. But everything from vibes to wine does not hit, and it's hard to justify your time here. They need to define themselves, perhaps renovate, create better salads, find a niche beyond pretty good pizza and great dipping sauce that makes it worth it coming for this. Met my friend, Joy, at Alfreda for dinner. What a great suggestion. Alfreda is conveniently located near Dupont Circle in historic northwest Washington, DC. So easy to reach via the red line on WMATA. Chef Russell started our early dinner with complimentary bowls of the most delicious soup. Not on the menu yet, but it will be a delightful addition soon. Shared a Caesar salad, which is one of my husband's favorites. Loved the addition of the sourdough breadcrumbs and the Grana Padano. So good. The sourdough pizza crust was amazing. The Alfreda pizzas were addictively delicious. Crushed tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, aged mozzarella, Romano, wild oregano and cracked black pepper. Added wild mushrooms. Amazing. Since we were there during happy hour, we took advantage of their drink specials. $8 Spritz and BOGO pizzas from 4-6 Monday to Thursdays. The Lychee Spritz was a delightful mocktail. Lychee, lemon and club soda. Finished the meal with Sourdough Bread Pudding. Bread pudding on a decadently delicious caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The sweetest ending to a perfect meal. Interesting to also learn about more about how Chef Russell started his restaurant, his home pizza oven, and his delicious sourdough crust. From Lung King Heen in Hong Kong to Alfreda with many stops along the way, Chef Russell has had a very interesting culinary journey across the globe. Thanks to Chef Russell for a great dinner. The thin crust is exactly how I like it--crispy, light, and packed with flavor without feeling heavy. The sourdough is made fresh each day and you never leave feeling bloated . The Alfreda pizza is my favorite, but the pepperoni pizza is a close second. You really can't go wrong with either. What keeps us coming back, though, is more than just the food. The chef is incredibly attentive ( he will come out to chat at times) and clearly takes pride in every pizza that comes out of the kitchen. The staff is genuinely warm and welcoming, making every visit feel like you're a regular. My son absolutely loves going there, which says a lot. This place was wonderful and a great addition to the DuPont circle scene. They have deals every weekday from 4-6pm with a bogo pizza (not you have to buy one plain and another of your choice and toppings are extra). The pizzas were so good, especially the Alfreda pizza. My friends and I got the plain with mushrooms, though I would choose another topping next time. They don't accept reservations but because we came early, it was easy to find a spot in the restaurant. It did get filled up after a bit on a Friday night. The ambiance is great and they have blinds if the sunlight may be too much. We ordered the Alfreda which was tomato based sauce with mozzarella we added an additional spicy sausage topping for $4. We also got the Plain with added wild mushrooms for $4. The dough was crispy and holds the toppings nicely. The texture was quite nice. The tomato sauce however was a bit tart and light bodied than I prefer but it's a personal preference. I always take a risk ordering pizza outside NJ/NY/CT. Fortunately I came here on a holiday weekend so the locals were away and there was no line and lots of empty tables. Pretty cool spot to grab pizza. Came here with a group of 6 and it took us like 15 mins to get seated, even with a reservation (it was a Saturday night). My wife and I ordered the fig, and sausage and onion. Both were crispy, and not overtly sauced. The sausage and onion had a hint of heat, and was light. The fig one was sweet but needed some balsamic sauce to bring out the taste more. It was a lil pricey, especially with 20% added automatically for the tip. This place is pretty great. They've got a great few spritzes, but I think they should offer more for a place that's all about cocktails and wine. They should have more spritzes but the ones they have are good. The pizzas are also pretty good. Maybe a pasta dish or two should be a added. Not a big menu. You can kind of go there once and you've seen everything they've got. But that one time is pretty good. They should trust their chef with more. I'll give credit where it's due. The pizza was delicious. Perfect crust, plenty of toppings. The service was fine. Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. The chopped salad was so salty it could have doubled as an electrolyte supplement, and the bill left a worse taste in my mouth than the salad did. One 12" pizza, a chopped salad, and three drinks (beer, wine, and Coke) somehow came to over $100, thanks in part to a 20% "gratuity" automatically added after tax. I have very mixed emotions about Alfreda. On the one hand, the pizza was very good. The crust was crispy and burned just a little - exactly the way I like it. The tomato sauce was robust, sweet and forward. It was a great bite every time. So my review for Alfreda's pizza is very good. However, there were many mis-steps and problems in the restaurant and I just cannot forgive them. One - the restaurant smelled like vomit. There is no other way to describe it. The minute the door opened, I smelled vomit. Maybe it was some of the cheese but I really doubt it. I would have left immediately but - it was really cold outside and, this is a neighborhood place, so I really wanted it to be good - maybe a place I would frequent. But the vomit smell was very strong. My spouse smelled it too. The service was not up to par. They were not verbal or talkative. They would walk away from us in the middle of our conversation. We asked for hot pepper flakes and, later, for cheese, and each time they walked away and NEVER brought these items to our table. But, finally, Alfreda is very expensive for being a casual pizza place. We had 2 pizzas (each 12 inch), personal pizzas as they described them. We shared a Caesar Salad. And we did NOT drink - only water. But our bill came to over $101.00. Yes, that's right, over $101.00. Now, I don't normally balk at price but I thought this was too much. Of course, part of that was the obligatory tip of 20% already included which I do not really like. Here, given that the service was lacking, I was irritated by the automatic 20% tip. But, bottom line, I think $101 for 2 personal pizzas and a salad is simply too much to pay. And did I mention the restaurant smelled like vomit??? We found this place on TikTok. Very close to our house in our neighborhood and wanted to check it out. The service was very good, the server was kind and very nice. We started out with the chopped salad, at a price of $18. This salad has no protein, and it's $18 and the size is mediocre. The salad was delicious but it was missing fresh parmesan cheese and should be $12, reasoning why the 4 stars. The pizzas were 10/10. The cook on the pizza was perfect for us and both of them were delicious! Definitely want to come back to try another pizza. It was a tad warm inside as well, but it was very cute and nice inside. The Dupont Circle brick-lined space exceeded my expectations for charm, but I was surprised it wasn't fuller on a Saturday night. I saw the option to order chickpeas and took it; I always wish that there were more bean-based options at restaurants, and the chickpea dish here was a nice mix of herbs and spice and a needed dose of fiber next to a pizza. I ordered their slightly fancier pizza with oregano and special cheeses, and got some pickled hot peppers on it. This turned out to be a great combination, and the crust worked well for mopping up some chickpeas. The crust wasn't quite as sour as I'd expected; the finely shredded Romano was probably the sharpest flavor in the mix. I was also a bit surprised that there weren't more non-alcoholic beverage options. This was okay by me though as the price for a pie and an appetizer was already high with an included service charge of 20%. Having said that, I would have tipped reasonably well anyway. Wanted to have a cute girls night out dinner with one of my friends and Alfreda was the perfect place for it! The restaurant has a nice red brick aesthetic on the inside and nice mood set with the candles. Not many tables and they don't take reservations so very intimate feel. The lychee and passion fruit spritzes were the stars of the show. We both added vodka to ours because the drinks originally were non-alcoholic. SO GOOD and strong! They also have really good happy hour deals so will be back for those. The Caesar salad was a really nice starter tossed in breadcrumbs for a nice crunch. The staff was so sweet and the spritzers were great..... but let me tell you about their watermelon basil spritzer....it was so well balanced and yummy that I came back today to get another and decided to try their pizza as well.
