I have had some of the best BBQ in the country in Memphis and Detroit, and I did not come in with my nose up thinking that I should hold DC BBQ to this standard, but gosh we were so disappointed here and I ended up having indigestion issues from the spicy beans. The food was very overpriced for the portion sizes (it was laughable what I ended up getting for what I had paid) and is it just me or are others getting tired of immigrant staff members who have not and or refuse to command the English language working in the front having communication hurdles and obstacles with you over a basic order, this issue is happening with more Black owned businesses as well as others. Look ladies and gentlemen cheaper does not always mean better, but I digress. The food came out surprisingly very fast which to me I had noticed with skepticism as there is a lot of processed type of meats here. The sandwich relies on a lot of bread, and cheese (brisket) with very think slices of meat, so it is like eating a grilled cheese sandwich. The potato salad had big chunks of pickles and even though I know potato salad at restaurants are not going to taste like homemade version a lot of the times, but still the level of attention to detail was missing a bit with chucks in the potato salad. There should be regular fries not just spicy and same with beans. The restaurant caters towards the White and foreign gentrification of the city by ignoring and distancing itself from the Black community of the city. The transient dollar always wins, as Shaw is the most intensively gentrified neighborhood in DC for good reason. I would personally stick with Mission BBQ and maybe Famous Daves chains, if you are not going to be a homemade pit master or cook yourself those ribs for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Sometimes you want to treat yourself from always cooking in the kitchen, but gosh can these places step their game up and stop selling out? What is next we will have raisins and fruit in our potato salad? I came in excited thinking this place was going to be amazing, but there needs to be a bit of improvement with the food quality. We did dine in, it's a smaller space with no frills but with food and drinks that tasty you truly don't need much else. You order near the front and wait for them to bring your order out. Hungry after church, we decided to stop here for lunch. We came to DC to study at a coffee shop but needed to grab food prior. We had been anticipating coming to this place since we haven't been disappointed by DC BBQ so as a group of 5 we ordered the DC City Showstopper with Coleslaw, Hushpuppies, Smoky Brisket Chili (+Fried Brussel Sprouts and Spiced Fries) and little did we know the owner himself took our order. He seemed so happy that we ordered something to get a real taste and feel of the place he's been creating. He had such positive notes on our order and made sure that it was personally delivered by him with all the condiments to our hearts content. He let us know that the BBQ sauce is made in house (which you would be surprised and disappointed how many BBQ spots do not do that nowadays) which was vibrant, sweet, smokey, and tangy! Perfect to pair with the pork and chicken items we ordered, my only ask is that we got more or a container for the table because it was so yum! The brisket had a beautiful dark bark from the smoking, pink interior, soft, fall apart, and tender from the fat left on. It was also great the next day. Rib tips were great for those who need an introductory course in rib eating. One of our friends recently transitioned from a vegetarian diet so we really wanted to make it a point to visit and introduce bone-in eating. The rib tips had a good amount of meat and the smokey flavor of the rub came through! Everyone enjoyed the wings, which were large, juicy, fully coated and so unexpected coming from a BBQ place, but so worth the reorder!! Sides were also perfect as they can be. Hushpuppies had bits of corn kernels which I like to see, they were also perfectly fried and crisp. Fries were similar to a sweet-bbq rub, admittedly we thought they would be spicy so maybe change the name to "seasoned" rather than "Spiced," the texture was great. Fried Brussel Sprouts were so large and delicious, the leaves of the brussel sprout fan out as they fry in oil so it feels like a cruciferous based chip that gets the same treatment of the Spiced Fries, if you're indecisive, choose the Brussels, it paired so well with the natural flavor of the sprout. Coleslaw was simple but cooling to the palette. Chili was so flavorful stewing and developing a deep flavor from all the brisket! It would be great over something else like the fries or a starch like potato or Mac & Cheese as its own order. I love it when a restaurant does House Pickles because its such a bright and acidic way to elevate the meaty flavors you have that dominate the plate. Also shout out to the cilantro aioli, you wouldn't expect it, but it was such a nice change out of the sauces you would normally expect out of a BBQ spot. Its almost zesty and cooling so its great to add to fries or any of your meat. Overall, we can tell that this menu was carefully crafted with flavors that compliment and let the BBQ shine and do its thing. Sides might be eaten with the meal but they are also stand alone good, so you can tell there was a lot of quality check and thought behind what you see on a menu, even if its similar to other menus. I encourage you to notice these subtleties in BBQ joints because that's why it matters to open up their own with their distinct craft of BBQ. If you're looking for good brisket in DC, DC Smokehouse is the spot. I almost always order the brisket sandwich, and it never misses. The brisket is flavorful, tender, and clearly the star of the menu. That's really what you come here for, and they do it right. Where things fall a bit short for me is the sides. The mac and cheese isn't anything special, and while the hush puppies are okay, you don't get many of them, which makes it hard to justify the cost.
