Ok the secret's out about this spot. It's AMAZING! Hands down one of my favorite brunch spots in the neighborhood. It's incredibly affordable, every meal is served perfectly every time, the staff are a bunch of sweethearts, and have I said it's incredibly affordable? I get (almost every time) the spinach and feta crepes. Their fresh squeezed orange juice is amazing. And my friend usually gets the country fried steak, which is pretty damn delicious. Blech! The food was not very tasty. Alexander Burger had an "off" taste. I think McDonalds does a better tasting burger for half the price. I had the roast pork sandwich special that comes with soup, mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken/rice soup was extremely starchy with little flavor. The pork was dry with absolutely no seasoning. Such a lovely little spot. The food is good and the service is excellent. Feels very family-like. I went there to check emails and eat some chocolate chip pancakes and when my computer was dying they let me switch tables and got me an extension cord so I could plug it in. When we were up next, hostess gave away table to elderly lady and other lady. Ok, pass on that. Then another open table opens up and a gentleman walks past us and is allowed by hostess to plop down by himself and chat with his friends sitting at table across. So the problem with neighborhood restaurants. They gripe and complain that they want new business and welcome newcomers. I've been in mourning for Augie's, my neighborhood diner, since they closed last month, and searching for a replacement. Pauline's is a little too unpredictable, the Ravenswood is a little too far away, and the Golden Nugget just doesn't cut it. Based on other Yelp reviews, I decided to check out Alexander's. You know the Seinfeld episode where Elaine starts hanging out with Kevin, Gene, and Feldman? That's what it was like walking into Alexander's. Same old Greek guy, but different model, taller and a bit more robust. Two older waitresses -- one his wife and one his sister? Or his daughter? Hard to tell. Much brighter than Augie's, but a similar style if a different vintage -- more 70s/80s than 50s/60s. [Actually, Alexander's looks likes a Baker's Square that has been repurposed into a Greek diner -- check out the sunken ceiling with the typical burgundy paint job.] Nicer counter, but in the wrong place. the whole thing kind of threw me for a loop. Good food and great prices, which you expect from a place like this. Sandwiches, a handful of entrees, and breakfast all day. Signature skillets, including a Ladies Skillet, for you girls who are watching your figures, for 7 bucks. Lovely laminated menus. Fast and friendly service. I had the Reuben sandwich -- because I didn't see the Monte Cristo, which was on another page -- and it was okay. This is not the kind of place you go for a Reuben, and theirs was more like a corned beef and Swiss cheese sandwich. Where's the Russian dressing? But the meat was good and the toast was crisp and the deluxe sandwich comes with fries AND a cup of soup, so how can you lose? If Alexander's was closer to my house, I could see it becoming a go-to spot. But it's a mile and a half away, and for someone without a car, that's too far for a casual drop-in. But I'm sure I'll be back. And after a few more visits, I may knock it up a star. For now, it's on the high side of average. EDIT: I knocked it up a star. But be wary of the vegetables. We took too much time so we got kicked out. For real. I met a friend to catch up after a year of not seeing her and we planned to have coffee and breakfast. We drank coffee for about 30 minutes then ordered skillets. In the 30 minutes it took to order we had 2 people back to back ask us if we were ready to order. When we finally ate, I set aside half my skillet while eating pancakes and two people back to back asked if I wanted a box. Then when I was actually done they cleared my plates and about 30-40 minutes later, what appeared to be the owner or the manager, approached us saying they needed the booth and we had to move to the counter or to leave. Really??? I've worked in the restaurant industry before and the closest I've EVER come to telling a patron that they've overstayed their welcome is to ask them to cash out their checks so I could go home at the end of my shift. The best part about it is that the reason they needed the booth was for the one guy standing at the door. Why not tell him to sit at the counter?? And we still tipped the waitress $7.00 on a $25 tab. Hideous! I just read the Yelp reviews and thought I'd check it out for a late lunch. I walked in and was ignored by 3 different waitresses. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to seat myself or...so I stood there like an idiot. When I asked someone they seemed put out and didn't want me to take up a booth (dining by myself). There were 4 booths available. It wasn't rush hour. I hate counter seating but sat down there anyway to be polite. Again, no other greeting. One waitress was carrying on about how bad her day and job was....aloud...in front of me and other customers but couldn't muster the smile to greet me. I grabbed my own menu, none offered to me. Looked it over and decided to leave. Still no acknowledgement by staff. Sorry I wasted $2.00 to park here, not withstanding the energy it took to step inside this place. Which was dirty and dingy. I grew up in Edgewater / Roger's Park and have been going to Alexander's for years... I remember graduating elementary school and one of my aunts taking me to Alexander's to celebrate over an ice cream sundae. This place is owned, if I recall correctly by a Greek couple, both of which are very friendly. This place serves some surprisingly good food, although I have to say the quality has gone downhill a little bit over the years, that is common with most restaurants and is to be expected. This is basically your usual , north-side, corner diner that serves your typical breakfast dishes (french toast, pancakes, etc) as well as sandwiches and entrees. One of my favorite dishes there is the Monte Cristo sandwich with the powdered sugar on top. The waffles are good here as well. I have never really eaten there, always opting for Sunday breakfast instead. The coffee here is not very good, I know that's a big pet peeve of mine, when coffee is mild or watery. I really like my coffee to be bitter and flavorful. The prices are what you'd expect of a place like this. $6.99 for pancakes with eggs and that sort of deal, which I don't consider to be expensive this day and age. Now one of the best things about this place is the staff, they are freakin, awesome. They are very friendly, older ladies that have been working there since I was a kid and pretty much all of them treat you very well. They DO NOT accept debit or credit cards here, so bring cash! Highly recommend the skillets, especially Alexander's skillet. As someone who loves corned beef hash, potatoes, eggs, and vegetables, this skillet has it all. My only complaint is that they list the potatoes as being hashed browns, when they're clearly home fries, but that doesn't make them any less delicious. I've eaten here in the past & it was ok however, I decided to order the Greek Mousaka at this Greek owned diner. I will NEVER order this again. EVER. Silly me thinking Greeks could make this (usually) delicious dish. What was I thinking??? Can you say potatoes, potatoes & MORE potatoes? I know it's supposed to have potatoes but really? The bechamel sauce was more like cottage cheese in its consistency. The tomato sauce tasted on some bites like spaghetti sauce, other bites like tomato sauce straight out of a can. I was told by one married to a Greek person that it's usually a vegetarian dish. I've had it with ground beef before but the amount of beef in this was so minimal that I wasn't even sure that it was meat. The amount of eggplant pieces equaled MAYBE 3 tbsp. I found this dismal & tasteless aling with the inedible canned corn. If this were my first visit here, I'd be giving this place 1 star but since my other meals here were ok, I give it 2 stars. Just moved in across the street and decided to walk over. The smells wafting into my apartment are always delicious. The diner is small upon entering, and when we went it was very busy. It took about 5 minutes to be greeted by a waitress, but everyone was very friendly. I got the breakfast special for 8.99, which was 3 eggs, 3 bacon strips, hash browns, 2 pancakes, and a small cup of juice and split it with my girlfriend. We were both full and had leftover hash browns. The pancakes were sweet and amazing, and the eggs were fluffy. The only thing is that the bacon was a bit overdone but other than that it was very good food. If it wasn't busy I'm sure the service would have been better. I will most likely return. read more

Everyone loves being badgered every 10 seconds to order on Sunday morning, right? To the point where the lady comes back before you've even opened the menu again? I overheard several tables order while they were sitting down so I can see where this comes from but that doesn't make it any less irritating. The staff was up in our grill on the good side of things as well. Water and coffee stayed topped off consistently and thoroughly. Lexie's might have gone up to 4 stars if the hashed browns were the awesome crispy shredded Waffle House kind and not the sad pile of mush closely related to mashed potatoes kind. Always very good to excellent food, never yet a failure of any kind. In all, a highly recommended city diner. Cozy, clean, well lighted and smells good. Waitresses are friendly, warm and admirably efficient. You're family here, a visiting cousin. The Ka-ya-na is mouth wateringly creamy and delicious- the best I've ever had- and I always order this any time it's on any menu anywhere. Bacon is prepared fresh to order and still spitting grease, not cooked ahead of time and all stiff and dried out. Oatmeal is sided with real cream, raisins and nuts, cinnamon. Chicken ABC soup is particularly appealing. Patty melt is large and properly prepared. Crispy, buttery grilled cheese melts in your mouth as it should and seldom does. Salad greens are fresh and crisp. Notably aromatic, very good diner coffee. A limited amount of free parking is available in a lot in back and during certain hours in The Raven Theatre lot across the street when they're closed. Came here with my boyfriend and a few friends this past Sunday. Never heard of it but my friend recommended it so we went. It wasn't too busy so we got day quickly for a table for 5. The restaurant itself is clean and bright, I likes their decor as well. I ordered the bacon chocolate chip Belgium waffle (which I think was a Sunday special since it was separate from the main menu) and a side of the potatoes. IT WAS DELICIOUS! The food itself was presented very nicely, and everything tasted great. Best waffle I've ever had! The only meh I had was the server. Total hole-in-the-wall diner, but I can appreciate that. They have some really delicious biscuits and gravy...stay away from the meatloaf though. I like that they always give you a piece of fruit with your breakfast. The food...again, stay away from the meatloaf...is always very flavorful and they don't mind giving their dishes a tasty kick. The waitresses have always been really friendly and they have actual conversations with you, as opposed to the "i'm just talking to you because it means more cash for me" waiters that you'll find in other establishments. Wow! This restaurant is wonderful. I recently went back after several years and I was not disappointed. The entire staff is friendly. My coffee cup was alway full and my water glass always had water. Their corned beef hash is fantastic--it was flavorful and was not salty. Nikki is about the best server in town and Eric is very friendly and outgoing. Why oh why does Yelp make us give a star? This might be the worst food I have had ever in the history of my life. For real. I ordered the steak and eggs. Medium. The banana crepes. And a side of corned beef hash. They didn't even attempt to season any of this. And the steak was so well done I may have broken my tooth. The hash browns were even bad...Dry and rubbery. The corned beef hash was black. That's the wrong color for this food. And the crepes were covered in oil and had mushy warm bananas in the middle. Like baby food. No powdered sugar. No seasoning or sugar or salt or pepper on the side even. The only attempt at flavor was burnt. But the best part is when I called grub hub they tried to call the restaurant and the restaurant would not answer the phone. So until they do grub hub will not give me my money back. I tried to give some of this to my dog before throwing it away and even my dog thought it was inedible. They brought me food not even suited for an animal but I have to pay for it? Not if my bank has anything to say about it. Don't waste your time or your money. This place is disgusting and shady. read more
