This used to be my favorite diner until recently. The past couple visits have been beyond disappointing. There's been a completely different staff so i don't know if there is new ownership or management or what happened. The quality of the food and the service have declined. The last 2 visits they just forgot our order. 8 parties arrived after us, some 10 minutes later or more, all had their orders. This happened twice in a row. When I asked the waitress about it she went to talk to the cook and came back and told us it would be up soon but it was another 10 minutes, Clearly they hadn't started but just lost track. Neither my or my wife's order were quite right but at that point i was too hungry to send it back. They used to have good biscuits but now they serve what looks like stale dinner rolls cut in half and tastes dry and bland as a biscuit. I'm done with this place sadly. read more

Asked for a menu n was given to me in a rude manner. Some lady got mad because I asked if I can place my order with her and rolled her eyes saying "I can put your order in whatever" and when the food came out ,it wasn't even Handed to me it was bagged n put to the side. It was my first time coming here. The servers were very kind and the atmosphere was that of a diner. And I mean that as a compliment. I love diners. Finding authentic diner experiences are not as easy to come by as they used to be. I ordered a Gypsy skillet and absolutely loved it. Alexander's is an amazing local diner! They serve all day breakfast that's affordable and more importantly filling and delicious. I get the veggie skillet - and it comes with pancakes. My wife gets the 2/2/2 which is just the right amount of food. As far as breakfasts go, I've had much better for the same price. I ordered the Ladies Skillet and was very disappointed by the food I received. There were only a few pieces of chicken in the meal and the eggs were also lacking. For $13 I would expect more. Ordered from Alexander's again. They always deliver on the taste, quality and speed of service every time I order. This is diner food but a step above most diners. The potatoes are cooked just right, the eggs are never overcooked and I love their fresh squeezed orange juice. great little hole in the wall place for breakfast. I had the breakfast sandwich and it was very tasty. My friend had the chicken fried steak- he always get it and it was filled with flavor and super juicy!! Cooked perfectly. OH & THE BREAKFAST POTATOES .... AHHHMAZINGGG. Genuinely confused as to why this place has so many stars. I was in Edgewater today with my roommate looking for a little brunch to soak up our hangover. We were going to Sauce and Bread Kitchen until we realized they didn't have many options. Walked up the street to Alexander's because the reviews seemed like the place was amazing. Maybe it's the OCD in me but the restaurant isn't clean. It's a diner style place but this place has a special kind of grunge. Our silverware was dirty (luckily I carry plasticware) which is a real turn off. I could also see into the kitchen and the practices didn't seem to clean. I tricked through however and ordered a steak skillet. The food came in about 15. First thing I notice was sliced American cheese under my eggs. Really? Ugh! The food itself was...idk. Could've been better. Steak was a little tough. I just think I'm hard to please but at the same time...come on. It's like a dirtier, less tasty version of Waffle House. read more

When we lived in Chicago, we would regularly visit this great diner. Fantastic for breakfast, they're also good for lunch or dinner. But breakfast is what we go for and we're never disappointed. This place has a breakfast item called a Skillet. It's served in a plate with a handle and is a brown ceramic. But what's in it is the real reward. There are a variety of choices available. We chose a ladies skillet and the veggie one and they were incredible. Basically, it's a bottom layer of fried potatoes and a mix of items like veggies, chicken and other stuff. On top are 2 eggs served whatever style you like. You also get a side of toast or pancakes. If you visit this place, this is the breakfast to get! read more

We really like this spot for breakfast. It's quaint and dineresque which we like. There is a counter too. Very nice wait staff. Always helpful. Theresa is a waitress who goes out of her way to converse and to build relationships when you are a return customer. $10.50 - three eggs, toast or two pancakes, juice, potatoes and meat choice served with coffee. Great value. I have also had the hash and omelets. My wife likes good diner coffee. You get it here. I'm a brewed iced tea guy - fountain not brewed here, so just note. We went out on a quest this morning for a new breakfast place to try and I feel as though is harder to find small diner breakfast places that don't do all of the fancy stuff that makes breakfast food not really feel like breakfast anymore. I had tickets to a show at The Raven Theatre and was looking for a place to grab a quick meal before the play started. I knew this place was directly across the street so it was a perfect choice. The patty melt was recommended so I went with it and it was delicious. While I didn't think our server was that great, the manager did stop by our table a couple times throughout our meal to see how we were doing and asked if we were going to the play. I think they probably get a fair amount of business prior to shows at the theatre. I'd go back before a show again. read more

Unfortunately, I wish i could say, go to Alexander's for lunch and dinner too! But...alas, I must say-- don't. I had the broiled perch and mac and cheese. Perch was overcooked and fishy, and the mac and cheese was overcooked and needed tons of salt to be edible. My partner had the gyro plate, which didn't have enough meat at all. All in all, after paying $20 for lunch, I left so unsatisfied! I really wanted to come here for all my future meals! If all my future meals are eggs and pancakes, then maybe-- but otherwise I guess Alexander's is just a breakfast place for me. read more

We were going here bi-weekly for several months last year and into 2018. The prices WERE good, the food WAS good and the to-go containers/silverware WAS clean. Unfortunately, over the course of our last few visits we discovered the following: 1. The to-go containers and plasticware began to stink of clorox or some sort of cleaner. It leeched through the plastic wrapping and made the utensils stink and impacted the food if it was left in the containers too long or we tried to use the plasticware. We had to switch out to regular plates and silverware at home. (We were trying to avoid cleaning time by ordering here...) 2. The hashbrowns were impossible to get right. Regular hash browns came almost raw. If we asked for extra crispy hashbrowns, the over-easy eggs came well done. 2b. A Denver Omelette by definition should have cheese in it. Here you pay extra for cheese. On top of that, the cheese is just slices of american "cheese product" and its $2 for 2 slices thrown on at the end (so it doesn't melt into the omelette at all). 3. After the new year, the amount of hashbrowns we got with the meal was reduced drastically. 4. After the new year, the price of everything increased by a dollar or two. The prices are now what you would expect to pay for good quality new-american dining, not for quick small diner food. The website was not updated for this, so the costs surprised us when we came in to pick up our orders the last time. It's too bad, this place is 2 blocks from home and an easy walk. A great go-to diner in Edgewater. And an awesome excuse to meet my friends up on the North side more often. Loved the benedict & Greek skillet on our most recent visit. The coffee (and flavored creamer!!) is exactly what a Monday morning calls for. The portions are generous and the prices seem fair/normal for the Chicago diner world. They have a housemade hot sauce that I really loved, too! And these awesome diner stools that remind me of the 50's. This diner on the corner of Clark and Granville has fantastic breakfast skillets. If you are hungry, you will be filled. The service is kind and attentive. The prices are fair, though maybe the slightly touch higher than I would expect from a diner. The decor is dated, but clean and comfortable. Pro tip: Look for the hanging portraits of Jesus and scary Jesus. The coffee cups are too small--more like tea cups--but the attentive staff comes by frequently to refill. I have come for breakfast 3 times and the patronage has varied from 2-3 tables filled to 2-3 tables empty. I never waited for a seat. I recommend the Alexander skillet. Expect a clean, non-pretentious diner with good service and hot food. $30ish for two including gratuity. read more

Wow...I had a great experience on a Sunday afternoon. As mentioned, you could drive right by this place and not notice it because it's small and the sign isn't huge (even though it's bright yellow.) But the food, service, and price are great; it's one of the better diners in that area. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, and it did not disappoint. I used to love going here after work, but now they close every day at 4. I'm not a happy camper. But otherwise it's standard greasy Greek diner food that's on the cheap side. The spinach and feta omelet, egg salad sandwich, and navy bean soup we're my favorites. Their pancakes are good too. Its not healthy food, but I am partial to old school diners. Only other negative is that they were constantly cleaning and it often had a strong chemical smell while I was dining. I used to love to come here. I felt comfortable sitting alone enjoying the conversations around me. However, something has changed. I'm there with my usual big smile and was ignored three times. And I would see men sitting beside me or near me who came in after being served at approximately the same time. I don't know if the server thinks women don't tip as well or if they just have a bias against a single women dining alone but it was very uncomfortable. The food was good but I'll never go there again. If you're a single male or in a group, I witnessed excellent service. But single female diners, look elsewhere. read more
