On Sawmill between Bethel and Henderson.

I love Aldi. I love its quarter popping cart, bumper car crowded aisles, no bells and whistles displays, inexpensive off-label foods, sit down cashier who are lightening quick, no annoying music, no thrills small grocery self. I'm grateful to have found this corky, eccentric German owned store when I first came to town in 1994. Back then, the only store around was on Cleveland Avenue. My roommate drove a friend and I there and we wowed at the cheep prices of generic brands. But since then things have changed for the chain--for the better. The chain has an interesting history. Founded in 1913 by the matriarch of the Albrecht family in Germany the chain really took off in 1948 when her two sons took command. The core idea of the business was developed then, in the post WWII area, when the German economy was in the dumps. They implemented the cost cutting measures that makes them the projected by 2024 third largest grocery store in the United States. That strategy was so successful that by the 1960s they changed their name by combining the first two letters of Albrecht and Diskont ( discount) to form the name Aldi. But soon after the brothers got into a fight and split the company into two: Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud. The Aldi here in the US is Aldi Sud. Aldi Nord is also in the United States under the name of Traders Joes. Currently the chain is undergoing great growth investing $1.9 million in remodeling. The Upper Arlington store has already been remodeled and looking good in its plot just off Sawmill between Bethel and Henderson Rd. If you never had been it is a unique experience you need a quarter to get a cart. Yep that's right, 25cents. You get it back when you bring the cart back--its a ploy to insure you bring back the cart so they don't have to waste money hiring someone to do it. You'll also need to bring a bag, or buy one there, for they don't bag your stuff. The stores are small, average about 16,400sqft. Making your way through their four aisle can be chaotic. They play no music. They have no known brand. But it worth it. The result of all this cost cutting is low prices in brands only sold at Aldi. Here are the deals I get here weekly: 24 pack of water $1.79-$2.29 ( water cost $1 a bottle at gad stations!) Protein bars 10g $1.79 12-pack eggs $ .89-$.49! Bagels-- $1.99 Produce very cheep. So are meets, milk, and dairy. The off brands can often be better than the known brands. The staff here is very fast, courtious, and cool. It can get really crowded. On Saturday morning a group of UA regular gather at door before opening. It is just a cool store.

First time at this location. Store was well stocked and checkout was efficient. Great prices on produce! Interesting items on the shelf!

Just discovered Aldi recently and this one has a great selection. It took awhile to figure out their layout, but it gets easier the more you go. I supplement my regular grocery store trip with aldi with items like: sprout bread, chicken salad, their brand greek salad dressing, their version of lactaid milk, their brand multi brand cheerios, etc... Be on the lookout for specials like chia latte mix and gelato, they are delicous!! ** Make sure you bring a quarter so you can get a cart and your own bags - or you can use boxes they provide or buy bags. **

CHA-CHING. The sound of $$. Savings. Oh and lets give a check mark for very good stuff. Uh huh, that would be Aldi, as in the same family as Trader Joes. Yep, you have to pay 25¢ for a cart, products are private labels, CASH or DEBIT CARD only, and you bag your own groceries (like schnell!), but it all adds up to value shopping for some real quality items. They have you when you come in the door: chocolates, alcohol and snacks prominently displayed. You will find common grocery selections as well as specialty items, all for less than most other stores. In general, I am not a fan of their fresh produce or meats. But, there are exceptions like lemons, kielbasa sausage and the bomb thick sliced applewood bacon!! The limited offers items and freezer selections are really good. Almond milk @ $2.25, 2.25 lbs mixed nuts @11.50, etc.. They even have a small home goods section. You will be surprised at what you will find here whether planning a party or preparing a family meal. Keep in mind, all Aldi stores are not the same. Just like TJ, you will like some better than others. This one has recently been remodeled and looks all bright and new. The one on Silver Dr. is closer to my home and more familiar, but nothing fancy. There are many around so go ahead and stop in. You'll find one you like.

I first learned of Aldi's grocery store when I was in High School. My mother, who was working at a German school in Cincinnati, was told about this wonderfully inexpensive, German originated, grocery with good quality food. My mom is always seeking the next super deal. So, she started 'testing' the foods at Aldi. We were the test market. Seeing absolutely no difference in quality, we ended up making the switch completely. It was a pretty sweet deal for me, when I went to college. I would make my random weekend trips and come back to Columbus with a car full of make your own pizza kits, mac 'n cheese, cans of tuna, beans, fruit, pasta, crackers, mustard, honey, the list could seriously go on and on. But it was all under $100! Crazy! When I eventually started buying all of my own groceries, I started missing the value of Aldi's. I knew of one out by my Little's house (I was a Big Sister), but the neighborhood wasn't the greatest. Then I moved to Hilliard, and within a year, an Aldi's went up!...Then another near Dublin, AND they started having Sunday hours. Couldn't get any easier. Except that I moved to Grandview. Such is life. I like to have some cash on me if I think I might be in the area of Aldi's-they don't take credit cards, but they do accept debit. It's so easy to stop in a grab whatever my arms can carry, checkout and be on my way. Or, as an alternative, you can 'rent' a cart for a quarter and really dig in deep. If you fill your cart full, be ready for the check-out express. You will load your groceries, and have to be ready to nearly catch the items at the end. There is no little food waiting space. The item gets scanned and is tossed directly into your cart. Then you better have your cash ready, because people are waiting on you! Roll your cart to the side, box/bag your food, return your cart to the corral, stick the little metal key into your cart and retrieve your quarter. Whew! Yeah, it's a far cry from The Fresh Market. But check out your receipt! Well worth it!

It is immaculately clean and the products are laid out with much care.
